Abstract
The presence of an aromatic additive has been seen to enhance, often significantly, the enantioselectivity and yield in asymmetric organocatalysis. Considering their success across a dizzying range of organocatalysts and organic transformations, it would seem unlikely that a common principle exists for their functioning. However, the current investigations with DFT suggest a general principle: the phenolic additive sandwiches itself, through hydrogen bonding and π⋅⋅⋅π stacking, between the organocatalyst coordinated electrophile and nucleophile. This is seen for a wide range of experimentally reported systems. That such complex formation leads to enhanced stereoselectivity is then demonstrated for two cases: the cinchona alkaloid complex (BzCPD), catalysing thiocyanation (2-naphthol additive employed), as well as for L-pipecolicacid catalysing the asymmetric nitroaldol reaction with a range of nitro-substituted phenol additives. These findings, indicating that dual catalysis takes place when phenolic additives are employed, are likely to have a significant impact on the field of asymmetric organocatalysis.

Abstract
The chemical synthesis of molecules with closely packed atoms having their bond coordination saturated is a challenge to synthetic chemists, especially when three-dimensional control is required. The organocatalyzed asymmetric synthesis of acyclic alkenylated, alkynylated and heteroarylated quaternary carbon stereocenters via 1,4-conjugate addition is here catalyzed by 3,3´-bisperfluorotoluyl-BINOL. The highly useful products (31 examples) are produced in up to 99% yield and 97:3 er using enediketone substrates and potassium trifluoroorganoborate nucleophiles. In addition, mechanistic experiments show that the (Z)-isomer is the reactive form, ketone rotation at the site of bond formation is needed for enantioselectivity, and quaternary carbon formation is favored over tertiary. Density functional theory-based calculations show that reactivity and selectivity depend on a key n→π* donation by the unbound ketone's oxygen lone pair to the boronate-coordinated ketone in a 5-exo-trig cyclic ouroboros transition state. Transformations of the conjugate addition products to key quaternary carbon-bearing synthetic building blocks proceed in good yield.

Abstract
The skeletal ring expansion of heteroarenes through carbene insertion is gaining popularity in synthetic chemistry. Efficient strategies for heterocyclic ring expansion to access heterocycles containing a fluoroalkyl quaternary carbon center through fluoroalkyl carbene insertion are highly desirable because of their broad applications in medicinal chemistry. Herein, we report a general strategy for the dearomative one-carbon insertion of azoles using fluoroalkyl N-triftosylhydrazones as fluoroalkyl carbene precursors, resulting in ring-expanded heterocycles in excellent yields with good functional-group compatibility. The broad generality of this methodology in the late-stage diversification of pharmaceutically interesting bioactive molecules and versatile transformations of the products has been demonstrated.

Abstract
An array of chiral [1,2,4]triazino[5,4-a]isoquinoline derivatives were obtained in excellent yields (up to 98%) and with excellent enantioselectivities (up to 99% ee) via a new highly asymmetric (3 + 3) cycloaddition reaction of diazo compounds and isoquinolinium methylides, with a bifunctional chiral phase-transfer catalyst (PTC). Density functional theory calculations show that PTC has a bridge role in the deprotonation/protonation process. The obtained products were transformed into densely functionalized polycyclic heterocompounds with multiple stereocenters.

Abstract
AbstractA series of (trifluoromethyl)cyclopropanes (TFCPs) tolerating a broad range of functional groups, known as tert-butyl bioisosteres, have been obtained from the cyclization reaction between nitromethane and 5-[β-(trifluoromethyl)styryl]isoxazoles in 70–94% yields and 75:25 to 90:10 dr. This method offers practical access to this cyclopropyl moiety of pharmacological interest, employing an inorganic base under phase-transfer conditions.

Abstract
An enantioselective (92-99% ee) Michael/aldol cascade reaction between 4,4,4-trifluoroacetoacetates and α,β-unsaturated enones was established in the presence of cinchona alkaloid-based primary amines. Various β-CF3-cyclohexanones were constructed in high yields (81-99%) as a couple of separable diastereomers. This tandem reaction was sensitive to acidic co-catalysts, with a Michael/aldol condensation process favorably occurring to generate β-CF3-cyclohexenones (42-69% yield, 84-96% ee) in the presence of trifluoroacetic acid.

Abstract
A cross-dehydrogenative coupling strategy for enantioselective access to acyclic CF3-substituted all-carbon quaternary stereocenters has been established. By using catalytic DDQ with MnO2 as an inexpensive terminal oxidant, asymmetric cross coupling of racemic δ-CF3-substituted phenols with indoles proceeded smoothly, providing CF3-bearing all-carbon quaternary stereocenters with excellent chemo- and enantioselectivities. The generality of the strategy is further demonstrated by efficient construction of all-carbon quaternary stereocenters bearing other polyfluoroalkyl and perfluoroalkyl groups such as CF2Cl, C2F5, and C3F7. A cross-dehydrogenative coupling (CDC) strategy for enantioselective access to acyclic CF3-substituted all-carbon quaternary stereocenters has been established.![]()

Abstract
The five-membered, nitrogen-containing pyrroline ring is a privileged structure. This ring is present in many bioactive compounds from natural sources. Pyrrolines-the dihydro derivatives of pyrroles-have three structural isomer classes, depending on the location of the double bond: 1-pyrrolines (3,4-dihydro-2H-pyrroles), 2-pyrrolines (2,3-dihydro-1H-pyrroles) and 3-pyrrolines (2,5-dihydro-1H-pyrroles). This review aims to describe the latest advances for the synthesis of pyrrolines by transition metal-catalyzed cyclizations. Only reactions in which the pyrroline ring is formed by metal promotion are described. Transformations of the pyrroline ring in other heterocycles, and the structural manipulations of the pyrroline itself are not discussed. The review is organized into three parts, each covering the metal-mediated synthesis of the three pyrroline isomers. Each part is subdivided according to the metal involved, and concludes with a brief description of notable biological activities within the class.

Abstract
A palladium-catalyzed C(sp3 )-C(sp2 ) Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling of aryl boronic acids and α-(trifluoromethyl)benzyl tosylates is reported. A readily available, air-stable palladium catalyst was employed to access a wide range of functionalized 1,1-diaryl-2,2,2-trifluoroethanes. Enantioenriched α-(trifluoromethyl)benzyl tosylates were found to undergo cross-coupling to give the corresponding enantioenriched cross-coupled products with an overall inversion in configuration. The crucial role of the CF3 group in promoting this transformation is demonstrated by comparison with non-fluorinated derivatives.

Abstract
Using an iridium catalyst modified by PhanePhos, CF3-allenes react with methanol to form branched products of hydrohydroxymethylation as single regioisomers with excellent levels of enantiomeric enrichment. This hydrogen autotransfer process enables catalytic enantioselective formation of acyclic CF3-bearing all-carbon quaternary stereocenters in the absence of stoichiometric metals or byproducts.
