Abstract
Toluene is one of the simplest mono-substituted benzene derivatives and an important precursor to form polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and soot. However, there is a lack of critical understanding of the formation mechanisms of the toluene molecule. In this work, we explore high-temperature reactions of propargyl radical addition to 1,3-butadiene in a tubular flow microreactor. We obtain experimental evidence for the distinct formations of three C7H8 isomers consisting of toluene, 1,3,5-cycloheptatriene, and 5-methylene-1,3-cyclohexadiene discriminated by synchrotron VUV photoionization efficiency curves. Toluene is identified as the dominant product, which shows strong contrast with the calculated results of the system. By performing theoretical calculations and kinetic simulations, we found that 5-methylene-1,3-cyclohexadiene is a key product of the primary reaction, and toluene formation is enhanced by unavoidable secondary reactions, such as unimolecular isomerization and/or H-assisted isomerization reactions in the SiC microreactor. The current work provides competitive pathways for the enhanced formation of toluene, and may further help disentangle the toluene-promoted molecular growth mechanism of PAHs in combustion environments.

Abstract
Exploiting a chemical microreactor in combination with an isomer-selective product identification through fragment-free photoionization utilizing tunable vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) light in tandem with the detection of the ionized molecules by a high resolution reflection time-of-flight mass spectrometer (Re-TOF-MS), the present investigation reveals molecular mass growth processes to four distinct polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons carrying two six- and one five-membered ring (C13H10): 3H-cyclopenta[a]naphthalene, 1H-cyclopenta[b]naphthalene, 1H-cyclopenta[a]naphthalene, and fluorene in the gas phase. Temperatures of 973 and 1023 K simulating conditions in combustion settings along with circumstellar envelopes of carbon-rich stars and planetary nebulae. These reactions highlight the importance of methyl-substituted aromatic reactants (biphenyl, naphthalene) which can be converted to the methylene (-CH2˙) motive by hydrogen abstraction or photolysis. Upon reaction with acetylene, methylene-substituted aromatics carrying a hydrogen atom at the ortho position of the ring can be then converted to cyclopentadiene-annulated aromatics thus providing a versatile pathway to five-membered ring aromatics at elevated temperatures.

Abstract
The bimolecular gas-phase reactions of the D1-ethynyl radical (C2D; X2Σ+) with propylene (C3H6; X1A') and partially substituted D3-3,3,3-propylene (C2H3CD3; X1A') were studied under single collision conditions utilizing the crossed molecular beams technique. Combining our laboratory data with electronic structure and statistical calculations, the D1-ethynyl radical is found to add without barrier to the C1 and C2 carbons of the propylene reactant, resulting in doublet C5H6D intermediate(s) with lifetime(s) longer than their rotational period(s). These intermediates undergo isomerization and unimolecular decomposition via atomic hydrogen loss through tight exit transition states forming predominantly cis/trans-3-penten-1-yne ((HCC)CH═CH(CH3)) and, to a minor amount, 3-methyl-3-buten-1-yne ((HCC)C(CH3)═CH2) via overall exoergic reactions. Although the title reaction does not lead to the cyclopentadiene molecule (c-C5H6, X1A1), high-temperature environments can convert the identified acyclic C5H6 isomers through hydrogen atom assisted isomerization to cyclopentadiene (c-C5H6, X1A1). Since both the ethynyl radical and propylene reactants have been observed in cold interstellar environments such as TMC-1 and the reaction is exoergic and all barriers lie below the energy of the separated reactants, these C5H6 product isomers are predicted to form in those low-temperature regions.

Abstract
The regions of the C13H11 potential energy surface (PES) related to the unimolecular isomerization and decomposition of the 1-methylbiphenylyl radical and accessed by the 1-/2-methylnaphthyl + C2H2 reactions have been explored by ab initio G3(MP2,CC)//B3LYP/6-311G(d,p) calculations. The kinetics of these reactions relevant to the growth of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) under high-temperature conditions in circumstellar envelopes and in combustion flames has been studied employing the RRKM-Master Equation approach. The unimolecular reaction of 1-methylbiphenylyl proceeding via a five-membered ring closure followed by H elimination is predicted to be very fast, on a submicrosecond scale above 1000 K and to result in the formation of an embedded five-membered ring in the 9H-fluorene product. The 1-/2-methylnaphthyl + C2H2 reaction mechanism involves acetylene addition to the radical on the methylene group followed by a six- or five-membered ring closure and aromatization via an H atom loss. Despite of the complexity of the C13H11 PES, these straightforward pathways are dominant in the high-temperature regime (above ∼1000 K), with the prevailing products being phenalene, with a significant contribution of 1H-cyclopenta(a)naphthalene, for 1-methylnaphthyl + C2H2, and 1H-cyclopenta(b)naphthalene and 3H-cyclopenta(a)naphthalene, for 2-methylnaphthyl + C2H2. The methylnaphthyl reactions with acetylene represent a clean source of the three-ring PAHs, but they are relatively slow owing to the high entrance barriers of ∼10 kcal/mol, with the rate constants of about an order of magnitude lower as compared to those for naphthyl + allene and σ-aryl + C2H2. The 1-methylnaphthyl + C2H2 and 2-methylnaphthyl + C2H2 reactions represent prototypes for PAH growth by an extra six- and five-membered ring on a zigzag edge or a corner of PAH and the generated modified Arrhenius expressions are recommended for kinetic modeling of PAH expansion by the mechanism of acetylene addition to methylaryl radicals.

Abstract
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are fundamental molecular building blocks of fullerenes and carbonaceous nanostructures in the interstellar medium and in combustion systems. However, an understanding of the formation of aromatic molecules carrying five-membered rings-the essential building block of nonplanar PAHs-is still in its infancy. Exploiting crossed molecular beam experiments augmented by electronic structure calculations and astrochemical modeling, we reveal an unusual pathway leading to the formation of indene (C9H8)-the prototype aromatic molecule with a five-membered ring-via a barrierless bimolecular reaction involving the simplest organic radical-methylidyne (CH)-and styrene (C6H5C2H3) through the hitherto elusive methylidyne addition-cyclization-aromatization (MACA) mechanism. Through extensive structural reorganization of the carbon backbone, the incorporation of a five-membered ring may eventually lead to three-dimensional PAHs such as corannulene (C20H10) along with fullerenes (C60, C70), thus offering a new concept on the low-temperature chemistry of carbon in our galaxy.
