Disrupting the Hofmeister bias in salt liquid-liquid extraction with an arylethynyl bisurea anion receptor

Host-mediated liquid-liquid extraction is a convenient method for the separation of inorganic salts. However, selective extraction of an anion, regardless of its hydrophilicity or lipophilicity as qualitatively described by its place in the Hofmeister series, remains challenging. Herein we report the complete disruption of the Hofmeister-based ordering of anions in host-mediated extraction by a rigidified tweezer-type receptor possessing remarkably strong anion-binding affinity under the conditions examined. Experiments introduce a convenient new method for determination of anion binding using phosphorus inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to measure extraction of tetra-n-butylphosphonium (TBP+) salts from water into nitrobenzene, specifically examining the disrupting effect of the added arylethynyl bisurea anion receptor. In the absence of the receptor, the salt partitioning follows the expected Hofmeister-type ordering favoring the larger, less hydrated anions; the analysis yields the value -24 kJ mol-1 for the standard Gibbs energy of partitioning of TBP+ cation from water into nitrobenzene at 25 °C. Selectivity is markedly changed by the addition of receptor to the nitrobenzene and is concentration dependent, giving rise to three selectivity regimes. We then used SXLSQI liquid-liquid equilibrium analysis software developed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory to fit host-mediated extraction equilibria for TBP+ salts of Cl-, Br-, I-, and NO3- to the distribution data. While the reverse-Hofmeister 1 : 1 binding of the anions by the receptor effectively cancels the Hofmeister selectivity of the TBPX partitioning into nitrobenzene, formation of unexpected 2 : 1 receptor : anion complexes favoring Cl- and Br- dominates the selectivity at elevated receptor concentrations, producing the unusual order Br- > Cl- > NO3- > I- in anion distribution wherein a middle member of the series is selected and the most lipophilic anion is disfavored. Density functional theory calculations confirmed the likelihood of forming 2 : 1 complexes, where Cl- and Br- are encapsulated by two receptors adopting energetically competitive single or double helix structures. The calculations explain the rare non-Hofmeister preference for Br-. This example shows that anion receptors can be used to control the selectivity and efficiency of salt extraction regardless of the position of the anion in the Hofmeister series.

Material Design Strategies for Recovery of Critical Resources from Water

Population growth, urbanization, and decarbonization efforts are collectively straining the supply of limited resources that are necessary to produce batteries, electronics, chemicals, fertilizers, and other important products. Securing the supply chains of these critical resources via the development of separation technologies for their recovery represents a major global challenge to ensure stability and security. Surface water, groundwater, and wastewater are emerging as potential new sources to bolster these supply chains. Recently, a variety of material-based technologies have been developed and employed for separations and resource recovery in water. Judicious selection and design of these materials to tune their properties for targeting specific solutes is central to realizing the potential of water as a source for critical resources. Here, the materials that are developed for membranes, sorbents, catalysts, electrodes, and interfacial solar steam generators that demonstrate promise for applications in critical resource recovery are reviewed. In addition, a critical perspective is offered on the grand challenges and key research directions that need to be addressed to improve their practical viability.

Chemically Driven Rotatory Molecular Machines

Molecular machines are at the frontier of biology and chemistry. The ability to control molecular motion and emulating the movement of biological systems are major steps towards the development of responsive and adaptive materials. Amazing progress has been seen for the design of molecular machines including light-induced unidirectional rotation of overcrowded alkenes. However, the feasibility of inducing unidirectional rotation about a single bond as a result of chemical conversion has been a challenging task. In this Review, an overview of approaches towards the design, synthesis, and dynamic properties of different classes of atropisomers which can undergo controlled switching or rotation under the influence of a chemical stimulus is presented. They are categorized as molecular switches, rotors, motors, and autonomous motors according to their type of response. Furthermore, we provide a future perspective and challenges focusing on building sophisticated molecular machines.

Unveiling anion-induced folding in tripodal imidazolium receptors by ion-mobility mass spectrometry

The anion-induced folding of tripodal imidazolium receptors has been investigated by NMR spectroscopy, electrospray ionization ion mobility mass spectrometry and DFT calculations. Such folding can be switched by anion release upon collision induced dissociation.

Bumpy Roads Lead to Beautiful Places: The Twists and Turns in Developing a New Class of PN-Heterocycles

The Haley and Johnson labs at the University of Oregon have been collaborating since 2006, combining skillsets in synthetic organic, physical organic, and supramolecular chemistries. This joint project has produced many examples of host molecules that bind anionic guests and give chemical, photophysical, and/or electrical responses. Many of these receptors utilize two-armed arylethynyl backbones that have a variety of hydrogen- or halogen-bonding functional groups appended. However, in attempts to produce a bisamide-containing host using a peptide-coupling protocol with P(OPh)3 present, we isolated something unexpected – a heterocycle containing neighboring P and N atoms. This ‘failed’ reaction turned into a surprisingly robust synthesis of phosphaquinolinones, an unusual class of PN-heterocycles. This Account article tells the rollercoaster story of these heterocycles in our lab. It will highlight our key works to this field, including a suite of fundamental studies of both the original PN-naphthalene moiety, as well as a variety of structural modifications to the arene backbone. It will also discuss the major step forward the project took when we developed a phosphaquinolinone-containing receptor molecule capable of binding HSO4 – selectively, reversibly, and with recyclability. With these findings, the project has gone from hospice care to making a full, robust recovery.

Solvent-Dependent Linear Free-Energy Relationship in a Flexible Host-Guest System

Supramolecular chemistry provides an effective strategy for the molecular recognition of diverse molecules. Significant efforts to design synthetic hosts have enabled the successful binding of many types of guests; however, less is known about how host-guest environments influence binding. Herein, we present a comprehensive study in which we measure the host-guest binding of a bis(arylethynyl phenylurea) host with a chloride guest in eight solvents spanning ET(30) values ranging from nonpolar (40.7 kcal mol-1) to polar (47.4 kcal mol-1). Polar solvents show significantly weaker binding in comparison to nonpolar solvents, and the bulk solvent polarity parameter, ET(30), shows a linear free-energy relationship with respect to the free energy of binding in the host-guest complex. These studies provide a better understanding of how host-guest binding in flexible receptors is governed by their environments and highlight the importance of host reorganization contributions in the free energy of binding. In addition, these studies highlight that preorganization may not be as important as previously thought for weak binding in which enthalpic contributions are smaller versus in polar solvents where solvent effects are magnified.

Helical Anion Foldamers in Solution

Using anions to induce molecular structure is a rapidly growing area of dynamic and switchable supramolecular chemistry. The emphasis of this review is on helical anion foldamers in solution, and many of the beautiful complexes described herein are accentuated by their crystal structures. Anion foldamers are defined as single- or multistrand complexes-often helical-that incorporate one or more anions. The review begins by discussing foldamer structure and nomenclature and follows with discourse on the anions which are employed. Recent advances in functional foldamers that bind a single anion are examined, including: induced chirality, stimuli-responsive dynamics, fluorescence changes, organocatalysis, anion transport, and halogen bonding. The review then inspects multianion foldamers, and this section is organized by the number of strands within the foldamer-from single- to triple-strand foldamers. Finally, the review is punctuated by recent hydrogen- and halogen-bonding triple-strand anion foldamers.

Temperature Controls Guest Uptake and Release from Zn4L4 Tetrahedra

We report the preparation of triazatruxene-faced tetrahedral cage 1, which exhibits two diastereomeric configurations (T1 and T2) that differ in the handedness of the ligand faces relative to that of the octahedrally coordinated metal centers. At lower temperatures, T1 is favored, whereas T2 predominates at higher temperatures. Host–guest studies show that T1 binds small aliphatic guests, whereas T2 binds larger aromatic molecules, with these changes in binding preference resulting from differences in cavity size and degree of enclosure. Thus, by a change in temperature the cage system can be triggered to eject one bound guest and take up another.

The road to aryl CHanion binding was paved with good intentions: fundamental studies, host design, and historical perspectives in CH hydrogen bonding

Throughout the design and development of supramolecular receptors for anion binding, many different non-covalent anion-binding motifs have been employed. One motif seen in many host-guest systems is the sometimes weaker, 'non-traditional' aryl CH hydrogen bond. From June Sutor's discovery of the interaction and its subsequent dismissal by the field in the 1960s to today's use of the aryl CH hydrogen bond in synthetic anion receptors, the path our lab took to begin studying this interaction has been influenced by many other researchers in the field. This feature article highlights the history and properties of the CH hydrogen bond, with a particular focus on aryl CH hydrogen bonds in anion recognition. We highlight select recent developments in the field of anion receptors utilizing aryl CH hydrogen bonds, with an emphasis on how this has influenced the evolution of our approach in designing fundamental studies on CH hydrogen bonding and exploiting this interaction in efforts aimed toward preferential anion binding.

Cyclic Anion-Responsive π-Electronic Molecules That Overcome Energy Losses Induced by Conformation Changes

Preorganized structures suitable for anion binding were prepared by introducing dipyrrolyldiketone BF₂ complexes as acyclic anion-responsive π-electronic molecules into macrocycles. Pyrrole-inverted conformations, which typically present low stability in the case of acyclic derivatives, were obtained by covalent linkages through ring-closing olefin metathesis, exhibiting extremely high affinity for different anions.

Harnessing solid-state packing for selective detection of chloride in a macrocyclic anionophore

We report the synthesis of an inherently fluorescent macrocyclic receptor for chloride. The use of a disulphide tether provides for an excellent yield in the macrocyclization step. This compound binds chloride in the solution and solid state, and while unstable over time in aqueous solution, shows a selective response toward chloride over other anions in the solid state due to intermolecular interactions between fluorophore backbones. Surprisingly, the optoelectronic response to anions differs in solution and the films, with a distinct colorimetric response observed only in the film.

Conformationally flexible arylethynyl bis-urea receptors bind disparate oxoanions with similar, high affinities

Despite competing trends and computational predictions to the contrary, three bis-urea receptors bind disparate oxoanions (ClO₄⁻, HSO₄⁻, H₂PO₄⁻) with equal affinities in a non-polar solvent; in a more polar solvent the trend in association constants for one receptor matches that of the pK_b of the guest, as expected for H-bond donating hosts.

Anion Recognition Strategies Based on Combined Noncovalent Interactions

This review highlights the most significant examples of an emerging field in the design of highly selective anion receptors. To date, there has been remarkable progress in the binding and sensing of anions. This has been driven in part by the discovery of ways to construct effective anion binding receptors using the dominant N-H functional groups and neutral and cationic C-H hydrogen bond donors, as well as underexplored strong directional noncovalent interactions such as halogen-bonding and anion-π interactions. In this review, we will describe a new and promising strategy for constructing anion binding receptors with distinct advantages arising from their elaborate design, incorporating multiple binding sites able to interact cooperatively with anions through these different kinds of noncovalent interactions. Comparisons with control species or solely hydrogen-bonding analogues reveal unique characteristics in terms of strength, selectivity, and interaction geometry, representing important advances in the rising field of supramolecular chemistry.

Subcomponent Exchange Transforms an FeII4L4 Cage from High- to Low-Spin, Switching Guest Release in a Two-Cage System

Subcomponent exchange transformed new high-spin Fe^II₄L₄ cage 1 into previously-reported low-spin Fe^II₄L₄ cage 2: 2-formyl-6-methylpyridine was ejected in favor of the less sterically hindered 2-formylpyridine, with concomitant high- to low-spin transition of the cage’s Fe^II centers. High-spin 1 also reacted more readily with electron-rich anilines than 2, enabling the design of a system consisting of two cages that could release their guests in response to combinations of different stimuli. The addition of p-anisidine to a mixture of high-spin 1 and previously-reported low-spin Fe^II₄L₆ cage 3 resulted in the destruction of 1 and the release of its guest. However, initial addition of 2-formylpyridine to an identical mixture of 1 and 3 resulted in the transformation of 1 into 2; added p-anisidine then reacted preferentially with 3 releasing its guest. The addition of 2-formylpyridine thus modulated the system’s behavior, fundamentally altering its response to the subsequent signal p-anisidine.

Do CH-Anion and Anion-π Interactions Alter the Mechanism of 2:1 Host-Guest Complexation in Arylethynyl Monourea Anion Receptors?

Selective tuning of arylethynyl urea scaffolds for anionic guests requires an understanding of preferred binding motifs of the host-guest interaction. To investigate the binding preference of receptors without a pre-organized binding pocket, two electron-deficient phenylacetylene receptors with a single urea moiety have been prepared and were found to bind halides as 2:1 host-guest complexes that feature key CH-anion or anion-π interactions. These supporting interactions also appear to influence the mechanism of the 2:1 binding event.

Computational and Experimental Evidence of Emergent Equilibrium Isotope Effects in Anion Receptor Complexes

The measurement of a deuterium equilibrium isotope effect (EIE) for the aryl CH···Cl^– interaction of anion receptor 1H/1D is reported. Computations corroborate the results of solution measurements for a small, normal EIE in the full complex (K_a^H/K_a^D = 1.019 ± 0.010). Interestingly, isotope effects involving fragments of the anion receptor (urea, aryl ring, etc.) are predicted to produce an inverse effect. This points to an unusual and subtle structural organization effect of the anion receptor complex that changes the nature of the combined interactions to a normal isotope effect. The reversal of EIE values suggests that overall architecture of the anion receptor can dramatically impact the nature of bonding in these complexes.

A Synthetic Supramolecular Receptor for the Hydrosulfide Anion

Hydrogen sulfide (H2 S) has emerged as a crucial biomolecule in physiology and cellular signaling. Key challenges associated with developing new chemical tools for understanding the biological roles of H2 S include developing platforms that enable reversible binding of this important biomolecule. The first synthetic small molecule receptor for the hydrosulfide anion, HS(-) , using only reversible, hydrogen-bonding interactions in a series of bis(ethynylaniline) derivatives, is reported. Binding constants of up to 90 300±8700 m(-1) were obtained in MeCN. The fundamental science of reversible sulfide binding, in this case featuring a key CH⋅⋅⋅S hydrogen bond, will expand the possibility for discovery of sulfide protein targets and molecular recognition agents.

Solution and structural binding studies of phosphate with thiophene-based azamacrocycles

Two thiophene-based monocyclic receptors L1 and L2 have been studied for phosphate binding in solutions (D2O and DMSO-d6 ) by 1H NMR and 31P NMR titrations, and in the solid state by single crystal X-ray analysis. Results from 1H NMR titrations suggest that the ligands bind phosphate anions in a 1:2 binding mode in DMSO-d6 , with the binding constants of 5.25 and 4.20 (in log K), respectively. The binding of phosphate to L1 and L2 was further supported by 31P NMR in D2O at pH = 5.2. The crystal structure of the phosphate complex of L1 reveals unambiguous proof for the formation of a ditopic complex via multiple hydrogen bonds from NH···O and CH···O interactions.

Anion-directed self-assembly of a 2,6-bis(2-anilinoethynyl)pyridine bis(amide) scaffold

Bis(sulfonamide) receptors based on the 2,6-bis(2-anilinoethynyl)pyridine scaffold form persistent dimers with water and halides in solution and in the solid-state. The structurally related bis(amide) receptor derived from 3,5-dinitrobenzoyl chloride is a dimer in the solid-state with two HCl molecules directing the self-assembly. The 2+2 dimer, with a twisted "S"-shaped backbone, is held together by six hydrogen bonds. Dissolution of the (H2⁺·Cl^- )₂ adduct in CHCl₃ results, however, in a monomeric structure. DOSY and ¹H NMR experiments were used to identify the dominance of monomer in solution for both 2 and H2⁺·Cl^- . The 'OFF-ON' fluorescence response of 2, 6-bis(2-anilinoethynyl)pyridine is retained with amide arms.

Substituent Effects in CH Hydrogen Bond Interactions: Linear Free Energy Relationships and Influence of Anions

Aryl CH hydrogen bonds (HBs) are now commonly recognized as important factors in a number of fields, including molecular biology, stereoselective catalysis, and anion supramolecular chemistry. As the utility of CH HBs has grown, so to has the need to understand the structure-activity relationship for tuning both their strength and selectivity. Although there has been significant computational effort in this area, an experimental study of the substituent effects on CH HBs has not been previously undertaken. Herein we disclose a systematic study of a single CH HB by using traditional urea donors as directing groups in a supramolecular binding cavity. Experimentally determined association constants are examined by a combination of computational (electrostatic potential) and empirical (σm and σp) values for substituent effects. The dominance of electrostatic parameters, as observed in a computational DFT study, is consistent with current CH HB theory; however, a novel anion dependence of the substituent effects is revealed in solution.

"Off-on" aggregation-based fluorescent sensor for the detection of chloride in water

Receptors selective for anions in aqueous media are a crucial component in the detection of anions for biological and environmental applications. Recent sensor designs have taken advantage of systems known to aggregate in solution, eliciting a fluorescent response. Herein, we demonstrate a chloride-selective fluorescent response of receptor 1(+), based on our well-established class of 2,6-bis(2-anilinoethynyl)pyridine bisureas. The fluorescence intensity ratio of 1(+)·Cl(->) aggregates in water is four times larger than the next most fluorescent anion complex, 1(+)·ClO4(->). In addition, (1)H NMR spectroscopic titrations demonstrate 1(+) binds chloride more strongly than other biologically relevant anions in solutions of both DMSO-d6 and 50/50 DMSO-d6/MeCN-d3.

Solid-State Examination of Conformationally Diverse Sulfonamide Receptors Based on Bis(2-anilinoethynyl)pyridine, -Bipyridine, and -Thiophene

Utilizing an induced-fit model and taking advantage of rotatable acetylenic C(sp)-C(sp²) bonds, we disclose the synthesis and solid-state structures of a series of conformationally diverse bis-sulfonamide arylethynyl receptors using either pyridine, 2,2'-bipyridine, or thiophene as the core aryl group. Whereas the bipyridine and thiophene structures do not appear to bind guests in the solid state, the pyridine receptors form 2 + 2 dimers with water molecules, two halides, or one of each, depending on the protonation state of the pyridine nitrogen atom. Isolation of a related bis-sulfonimide derivative demonstrates the importance of the sulfonamide N-H hydrogen bonds in dimer formation. The pyridine receptors form monomeric structures with larger guests such as BF₄^- or HSO₄^-, where the sulfonamide arms rotate to the side opposite the pyridine N atom.

Ion and molecular recognition using aryl-ethynyl scaffolding

The aryl-ethynyl linkage has been extensively employed in the construction of hosts for a variety of guests. Uses range from ion detection (e.g., of metal cations in the environment or industrial waste and of anions prevalent in nature), to molecular mimics for biological systems, and to applications targeting future safety issues (such as CO2 capture and indicators for the manufacture of chemical weapons). This Focus Review examines the utilization of the aryl-ethynyl linkage in engineering host molecules for a variety of different guests, and how the alkyne unit plays an integral part as both a rigid scaffolding section in host geometry design as well as a linker to allow conjugative communication between discrete π-electron systems.

Redox-dependent self-sorting toggles a rotary nanoswitch

Conformation-determined through-bond versus through-space electronic communication in mixed-valence systems with a cross-conjugated urea bridge

Bis-triarylamine 2 and cyclometalated diruthenium 6(PF6)2 with a linear trans,trans-urea bridge have been prepared, together with the bis-triarylamine 3 and cyclometalated diruthenium 8(PF6)2 with a folded cis,cis-N,N-dimethylurea bridge. The linear or folded conformations of these molecules are supported by single-crystal X-ray structures of 2, 3, and other related compounds. These compounds display two consecutive anodic redox waves (N(·+/0) or Ru(III/II) processes) with a potential separation of 110-170 mV. This suggests that an efficient electronic coupling is present between two redox termini through the cross-conjugated urea bridge. The degree of electronic coupling has been investigated by using spectroelectrochemical measurements. Distinct intervalence charge-transfer (IVCT) transitions have been observed for mixed-valent (MV) compounds with a linear conformation. The IVCT transitions can also be identified for the folded MV compounds, albeit with a much weaker intensity. DFT results support that the electronic communication occurs by a through-bond and through-space pathway for the linear and folded compounds, respectively. The IVCT transitions of the MV compounds have been reproduced by TDDFT calculations. For the purpose of comparison, a bistriarylamine and a diruthenium complex with an imidazolidin-2-one bridge and a urea-containing mono-triarylamine and monoruthenium complex have been synthesized and studied.

Intramolecular N-H···Cl hydrogen bonds in the outer coordination sphere of a bipyridyl bisurea-based ligand stabilize a tetrahedral FeLCl2 complex

A bipyridyl-based anion receptor is utilized as a ligand in a tetrahedral FeCl2 complex and demonstrates secondary coordination sphere influence through intramolecular hydrogen bonding to the chloride ligands as evidenced by X-ray crystallography.
