Spin Polarization: A New Frontier in Efficient Photocatalysis for Environmental Purification and Energy Conversion

As a promising strategy to improve photocatalytic efficiency, spin polarization has attracted enormous attention in recent years, which could be involved in various steps of photoreaction. The Pauli repulsion principle and the spin selection rule dictate that the behavior of two electrons in a spatial eigenstate is based on their spin states, and this fact opens up a new avenue for manipulating photocatalytic efficiency. In this review, recent advances in modulating the photocatalytic activity with spin polarization are systematically summarized. Fundamental insights into the influence of spin-polarization effects on photon absorption, carrier separation, and migration, and the behaviors of reaction-related substances from the photon uptake to reactant desorption are highlighted and discussed in detail, and various photocatalytic applications for environmental purification and energy conversion are presented. This review is expected to deliver a timely overview of the recent developments in spin-polarization-modulated photocatalysis for environmental purification and energy conversion in terms of their practical applications.

Target-Driven Z-Scheme Heterojunction Formation for ppb H2S Detection from Exhaled Breath at Room Temperature

As a biomarker of periodontitis, sensitive and timely monitoring of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in exhaled breath at room temperature (RT) is important for the early intervention of oral diseases. However, the required high operation temperature to achieve high sensitivity is still a technical challenge for directly monitoring exhaled breath. In this study, by integrating metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) into self-aligned TiO2 nanotube arrays (NTs), a chemiresistor gas sensor with outstanding sensitivity and selectivity was constructed for the detection of H2S at RT. The precise regulation of a Co(III)-based MOF CoBDC-NH2 (BDC-NH2 = 2-aminoterephthalic acid) not only induced more active surface for the preconcentration of the target gas but also caused a buildup of Z-scheme heterojunctions in the H2S atmosphere that induced an ultrahigh sensitivity at RT via 365 nm light-emitting diode irradiation. The response and recovery times decreased to ∼50 and ∼28%, respectively, when this system was exposed to UV light. The sensing chips based on the as-prepared TiO2/CoBDC-NH2 NTs exhibited the highest-ranking H2S sensing performance, i.e., a limit of detection of 1.3 ppb and excellent selectivity even to 100 times high concentration of interference gases, owing to the synergistic chemical environment provided by NH2-functionalized Co-MOFs and abundant photogenerated electrons provided by Z-scheme heterojunctions. This sensing chip was also used in a practical application for the timely monitoring of halitosis from direct exhaled breath. This study provides a reliable and sensitive design for clinically aiding the timely detection of H2S in a complex oral environment.

The Role of the Ferroelectric Polarization in the Enhancement of the Photocatalytic Response of Copper-Doped Graphene Oxide-TiO2 Nanotubes through the Addition of Strontium

To evaluate the potential role of in situ formed Sr-Ti-O species as a ferroelectric component able to enhance the photocatalytic properties of an adjacent TiO₂ semiconductor, Cu-doped/graphene oxide (GO)/TiO₂ nanotubes (TiNTs) composites (with 0.5 wt % Cu and 1.0 wt % GO) have been synthesized while progressive amounts of strontium (up to 1.0 wt %) were incorporated at the surface of the composite through incipient wetness impregnation followed by post-thermal treatment at 400 °C. The different resulting photocatalytic systems were then first deeply characterized by means of N₂ adsorption-desorption measurements, X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-vis diffuse reflectance (UV-vis DR), Raman and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopies, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) (with energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy and Z-mapping). In a second step, optimization of the kinetic response of the Sr-containing composites was performed for the formic acid photodegradation under UV irradiation. The Sr-containing Cu/GO/TiNT composites were then fully characterized by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) for their dielectric properties showing clearly the implication of polarization induced by the Sr addition onto the stabilization of photogenerated charges. Finally, a perfect correlation between the photocatalytic kinetic evaluation and dielectric properties undoubtedly emphasizes the role of ferroelectric polarization as a very valuable approach to enhance the photocatalytic properties in an adjacent semiconductor.

Recognition of Water-Induced Double-Edged Sword Effects in Photocatalytic Selective Oxidation of Toluene on Titanium Dioxide Clusters with Density Functional Theory Calculations

Recently, water promotion effects in the selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde have been experimentally recognized and identified. However, the effects of water on the photocatalytic selective oxidation of toluene into benzaldehyde remain elusive. In this work, the Ti₃O₉H₆ clusters in different solvents (water and toluene solvent) are used to study the water-induced effects in photocatalytic oxidation reactions in kinetics and thermodynamics using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. In addition, the influences of the OH groups on catalysts (Ti-OH bonds) from photocatalytic water splitting are also considered. The results clearly demonstrate the water-induced double-edged sword effects in the photocatalytic selective oxidation of toluene. We expect that our work can not only shed light on the mechanisms of photocatalytic selective oxidation of toluene into benzaldehyde and other activation reactions of sp³ C-H bonds but also design and modulate highly efficient photocatalysts.

Zeolitic intralayer microchannels of magadiite, a natural layered silicate, to boost green organic synthesis

Despite the considerable attention given to the applications of magadiite in previous research, the properties of this natural layered silicate have remained mysterious due to the lack of crystal structure information. On the other hand, no one has doubted the intercalation capability between the layers. Here we succeed in determining the structure of magadiite using X-ray pair distribution functions and synchrotron powder diffractometry. We discover unexpected zeolitic microchannels within the layers. We describe efficient synthesis of 100% pure benzoic acid from toluene by using magadiite as an additive in a TiO2 photocatalytic system oxidizing toluene. Based on the uncovered structure of magadiite, we clarify the mechanism of this unique photocatalytic system: the microchannels of magadiite not only separate/accommodate the desired partially oxidized product formed on TiO2 but also prevent the accumulation of the overoxidized products on the TiO2 surface that deactivates the photocatalytic activity.
