Abstract
This paper describes photoelectrochemical dehydrogenative cyclization of 2-arylbenzoic acid and 2-arylbenzamide in a PEC cell consisting of a mesoporous WO3 photoanode and Pt cathode. The cyclization reaction is effectively driven by this PEC system at room temperature with blue LED irradiation under external oxidant- and metal-free conditions, delivering a series of benzolactones and benzolactams in up to 95% isolated yields. Meanwhile, hydrogen is released as the only byproduct of this process.

Abstract
We demonstrated a rapid and facile approach for the synthesis of various 3,1-benzoxazin-4-ones via a gold-catalyzed heteroannulation of readily available nonprotected anthranilic acids and simple aryl alkynes. Our preliminary mechanistic investigation indicated that the double incorporation of alkynes into anthranilic acids occurs through the formation of bisenamine intermediates.

Abstract
A novel method for electrochemical lactonization via C(sp3)-H functionalization was developed. This metal- and oxidant-free strategy enabled the efficient synthesis of various lactones. Gram-scale reaction and derivatization of the lactone product demonstrated the synthetic utility of this methodology. Mechanistic studies using control experiments and CV curves elucidated the proposed intramolecular HAT and the oxidative cyclization pathway. An unusual Shono-type oxidation was realized through this electrochemical approach, proceeding without a traditional nucleophilic addition process.

Abstract
A 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene-promoted cascade double-annulation of ortho-alkynyl quinone methide (in situ generated from modular propargylamine) for constructing of 2-aryl-4-hydroxybenzo[c]chromen-6-ones is developed. This synthetic strategy offers remarkable operational simplicity as it allows the use of benchtop-grade solvents without the need for predrying measures and inert atmosphere protection. Additionally, it demonstrates good functional group compatibility. The photophysical properties of these compounds were also examined, revealing bright fluorescence with high quantum yields.

Abstract
A catalyst-free aza-Michael addition/C(sp3)-O bond formation tandem reaction of substituted amino ferrocenes with quinone esters was developed, which provided a green and efficient strategy for the construction of a C(sp3)-O bond from C(sp3)-H, and a series of N-ferrocene-substituted benzodihydrooxazoles were smoothly produced in moderate to excellent yields (up to >99% yield). The mechanism experiments showed that quinone esters performed as both substrate and oxidant. The salient features of this transformation include good functional group tolerance, broad substrate scope and mild conditions.

Abstract
The term "C-H functionalisation" incorporates C-H activation followed by its transformation. In a single line, this can be defined as the conversion of carbon-hydrogen bonds into carbon-carbon or carbon-heteroatom bonds. The catalytic functionalisation of C-H bonds using transition metals has emerged as an atom-economical technique to engender new bonds without activated precursors which can be considered as a major drawback while attempting large-scale synthesis. Replacing the transition-metal-catalysed approach with a metal-free strategy significantly offers an alternative route that is not only inexpensive but also environmentally benign to functionalize C-H bonds. Recently metal free synthetic approaches have been flourishing to functionalize C-H bonds, motivated by the search for greener, cost-effective, and non-toxic catalysts. In this review, we will highlight the comprehensive and up-to-date discussion on recent examples of ground-breaking research on green and sustainable metal-free C-H bond functionalisation.

Abstract
Hypervalent aryliodoumiums are intensively investigated as arylating agents. They are excellent surrogates to aryl halides, and moreover they exhibit better reactivity, which allows the corresponding arylation reactions to be performed under mild conditions. In the past decades, acyclic aryliodoniums are widely explored as arylation agents. However, the unmet need for acyclic aryliodoniums is the improvement of their notoriously low reaction economy because the coproduced aryl iodides during the arylation are often wasted. Cyclic aryliodoniums have their intrinsic advantage in terms of reaction economy, and they have started to receive considerable attention due to their valuable synthetic applications to initiate cascade reactions, which can enable the construction of complex structures, including polycycles with potential pharmaceutical and functional properties. Here, we are summarizing the recent advances made in the research field of cyclic aryliodoniums, including the nascent design of aryliodonium species and their synthetic applications. First, the general preparation of typical diphenyl iodoniums is described, followed by the construction of heterocyclic iodoniums and monoaryl iodoniums. Then, the initiated arylations coupled with subsequent domino reactions are summarized to construct polycycles. Meanwhile, the advances in cyclic aryliodoniums for building biaryls including axial atropisomers are discussed in a systematic manner. Finally, a very recent advance of cyclic aryliodoniums employed as halogen-bonding organocatalysts is described.

Abstract
Selective C‒H functionalization in a pool of proximal C‒H bonds, predictably altering their innate reactivity is a daunting challenge. We disclose here, an expedient synthesis of privileged seven-membered lactones, dibenzo[c,e]oxepin-5(7H)-one through a highly chemoselective benzylic C(sp3)‒H activation. Remarkably, the formation of widely explored six-membered lactone via C(sp2)‒H activation is suppressed under the present conditions. The reaction proceeds smoothly on use of inexpensive metallic copper catalyst and di-tert-butyl peroxide (DTBP). Owing to the hazards of stoichiometric DTBP, further, we have developed a sustainable metallic copper/rose bengal dual catalytic system coupled with molecular oxygen replacing DTBP. A 1,5-aryl migration through Smiles rearrangement was realized from the corresponding diaryl ether substrates instead of expected eight-membered lactones. The present methodology is scalable, applied to the total synthesis of cytotoxic and neuroprotective natural product alterlactone. The catalyst is recyclable and the reaction can be performed in a copper bottle without any added catalyst. Abstract
Abstract
The application of hypervalent iodine species generated in situ in organic transformations has emerged as a useful and powerful tool in organic synthesis, allowing for the construction of a series of bond formats via oxidative coupling. Among these transformations, the catalytic aryl iodide can be oxidized to hypervalent iodine species, which then undergoes oxidative reaction with the substrates and the aryl iodine regenerated again once the first cyclic cycle of the reaction is completed. This review aims to systematically summarize and discuss the main progress in the application of in situ-generated hypervalent iodine species, providing references and highlights for synthetic chemists who might be interested in this field of hypervalent iodine chemistry.

Abstract
Herein we described an access to biaryl lactones from ortho-aryl benzoic acids via intramolecular O-H/C-H oxidative coupling with the commonly used cerium ammonium nitrate (CAN) as the one-electron oxidant under a thermal condition. The radical interrupting experiment suggested a radical process, while the kinetic isotope effect (KIE) showed that the C-H cleavage likely was not involved in the rate-determining step. Competitive reactions, especially the strikingly different ρ values of Hammett equations, indicated that the reaction rate was more sensitive to the electronic properties on the aryl moiety rather than the carboxylic moiety, which corresponded to the first single electron transfer (SET) step. In addition, the quite negative ρ values (-4.7) of the aryl moiety unveiled the remarkable electrophilic nature of the second intramolecular radical addition process, which was also consistent with product yields and regioselectivity. Moreover, control experiments disclosed that the single electron in the third step was also transferred to CeIV instead of molecular oxygen. Besides, the possible role of co-solvents trifluoroethanol (TFE) and its influences on the CeIV species were discussed. This work elucidated the possible mechanism by proposing the step that had more effects on the total reaction rate and the species that was responsible for the last single electron transfer.

A novel catalyst-free radical oxidative C-H annulation reaction of arylamines with α-keto acids toward benzoxazin-2-ones synthesis under mild conditions was developed. This hypervalent iodine(III)-promoted process eliminated the use of a metal catalyst or additive with high levels of functional group tolerance. Hypervalent iodine(III) was both an oxidant and a radical initiator for this reaction. The synthetic utility of this method was confirmed by the synthesis of the natural product cephalandole A.

Abstract
A DBU-mediated cascade strategy of propargylamines with dimethyl 3-oxoglutarate for constructing a functionalized benzo[c]chromen-6-one core has been achieved. This cascade process presumably involves a sequence of 1,4-conjugate addition, followed by lactonization, alkyne-allene isomerization, enol-keto tautomerization, 6π-electrocyclization, and aromatization. This protocol features mild reaction conditions, simple operation, rich structural diversity, and good functional group tolerance. A photophysical survey reveals that the benzo[c]chromen-6-one products exhibit fluorescence properties and show potential for exploring fluorescent material applications.

Abstract
Bis-N-heterocycle-stabilized λ3-iodanes (BNHIs) based on azoles are introduced as novel structural motifs in hypervalent iodine chemistry. A performance test in a variety of benchmark reactions including sulfoxidations and phenol dearomatizations revealed a bis-N-bound pyrazole substituted BNHI as the most reactive derivative. Its solid-state structure was characterized via X-ray analysis implying strong intramolecular interactions between the pyrazole nitrogen atoms and the hypervalent iodine centre.

Abstract
2-Fluoro-5-(trifluoromethyl)aniline was found to be a suitable monodentate transient directing group (MonoTDG) to enable Ru(II)-catalyzed intermolecular direct ortho-C(sp2)-H imidation of benzaldehydes. N-Tosyloxyphthalimide was used as an alternative azide-free amidation reagent to achieve high efficiency and good functional group tolerance. Moreover, the reaction could be enlarged to gram scale, and the amidated product could be readily converted into useful quinazoline and fused isoindolinone scaffolds by one-step derivatization.

Abstract
We found that in situ generated cerium(IV) carboxylate generated by mixing the precursor Ce(OtBu)4 with the corresponding carboxylic acids served as efficient photocatalysts for the direct formation of carboxyl radicals from carboxylic acids under blue light-emitting diodes (blue LEDs) irradiation and air, resulting in catalytic decarboxylative oxygenation of aliphatic carboxylic acids to give C-O bond-forming products such as aldehydes and ketones. Control experiments revealed that hexanuclear Ce(IV) carboxylate clusters initially formed in the reaction mixture and the ligand-to-metal charge transfer nature of the Ce(IV) carboxylate clusters was responsible for the high catalytic performance to transform the carboxylate ligands to the carboxyl radical. In addition, the Ce(IV) carboxylate cluster catalyzed direct lactonization of 2-isopropylbenzoic acid to produce the corresponding peroxy lactone and γ-lactone via intramolecular 1,5-hydrogen atom transfer (1,5-HAT).

Abstract
In recent years, the research area of direct C-H bond functionalizations was growing exponentially not only due to the ubiquity of inert C-H bonds in diverse organic compounds, including bioactive natural and nonnatural products, but also due to its impact on the discovery of pharmaceutical candidates and the total synthesis of intricate natural products. On the other hand, more recently, the field of photoredox catalysis has become an indispensable and unparalleled research topic in modern synthetic organic chemistry for the constructions of challenging bonds, having the foremost scope in academia, pharmacy, and industry. Therefore, the development of green, simpler, and effective methodologies to accomplish direct C-H bond functionalization is well overdue and highly desirable to the scientific community. In this review, we mainly highlight the impact on, and the utility of, photoredox catalysts in inert ortho and para C-H bond functionalizations. Although a surge of research papers, including reviews, demonstrating C-H functionalizations have been published in this vital area of research, to our best knowledge, this is the first review that focuses on ortho and para C-H functionalizations by photoredox catalysis to provide atom- and step-economic organic transformations. We are certain that this review will act as a promoter to highlight the application of photoredox catalysts for the functionalization of inert bonds in the domain of synthetic organic chemistry.

Abstract
A direct decarboxylative strategy for the generation of aza-o-quinone methides (aza-o-QMs) by N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) catalysis has been discovered and explored. This process requires no stoichiometric additives in contrast with current approaches. Aza-o-QMs react with trifluoromethyl ketones through a formal [4+2] manifold to access highly enantioenriched dihydrobenzoxazin-4-one products, which can be converted to dihydroquinolones through an interesting stereoretentive aza-Petasis-Ferrier rearrangement sequence. Complementary dispersion-corrected density functional theory (DFT) studies provided an accurate prediction of the reaction enantioselectivity and lend further insight to the origins of stereocontrol. Additionally, a computed potential energy surface around the major transition structure suggests a concerted asynchronous mechanism for the formal annulation.

Abstract
A controllable palladium-catalyzed intramolecular C-H activation of N-alkyl- N-arylanthranilic acids has been developed. The methodology allows selective synthesis of 1,2-dihydro-(4 H)-3,1-benzoxazin-4-ones and carbazoles from the same starting materials and palladium catalyst. The selectivity is controlled by the oxidant. Silver oxide promotes C(sp3)-H activation/C-O cyclization to provide 1,2-dihydro-(4 H)-3,1-benzoxazin-4-ones, while copper acetate contributes to C(sp2)-H activation/decarboxylative arylation to afford carbazoles. This protocol is demonstrated by its wide substrate scope and good functional group tolerance.

Abstract
An anodic oxidation/cyclization of 2-arylbenzoic acids for the synthesis of dibenzopyranones has been developed. The reaction proceeds at room temperature with no oxidant or electrolyte required and exhibits a high atom economy with H2 being the only byproduct. A series of dibenzopyranones was obtained in good to excellent yields. Urolithins A, B, and C are formally synthesized by adopting this method as a key step to demonstrate its synthetic utility.

Abstract
This work reports tert-butyl nitrite (TBN) as a multitask reagent for (1) the controlled synthesis of N-nitrosoamide from N-alkyl amides, (2) hydrolysis of N-methoxyamides to carboxylic acids, (3) metal- and oxidant-free benzocoumarin synthesis from ortho-aryl-N-methoxyamides via N-H, C-N, and C-H bond activation, and (4) isocoumarin synthesis using Ru(II)/PEG as a recyclable catalytic system via ortho-C-H activation and TBN as an oxygen source. The sequential functional group interconversion of amide to acid has also been examined using IR spectroscopic analysis. Additionally, this methodology is highly advantageous due to short reaction time, gram scale synthesis, and broad substrate scope.
