Abstract
An expanded carbaporphyrinoid analogue, octaphyrin(2,1,1,1,2,1,1,1), containing two rigid diphenylacetylene moieties is reported. In contrast to traditional pyrrolic macrocycles where flexible conformers coexist in dynamic equilibrium, this macrocycle exists as two separable, conformationally stable stereoisomers, denoted as 1A and 1B. The conformational effect of both conformers, as well as their protonated forms, were thoroughly studied using NMR spectroscopy, UV/Vis, and single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. Importantly, heating conformer 1B leads to its irreversible conversion to 1A, whereas in its protonated form, 1A ⋅ 2MSA undergoes irreversible transformation to 1B ⋅ 2MSA at lower temperatures. These temperature-dependent features establish a foundation for developing new accumulated heat sensors, as demonstrated by the use of the present octaphyrins as a customized thermochromic indicator in steam sterilization. The present study thus underscores how the conformational rigidity of these new polypyrrolic macrocycles imparts properties that are distinct from historically flexible expanded porphyrinoids.

Abstract
Exploration of expanded porphyrins with unprecedented reactivities has remained important. Here [22]pentaphyrins(2.0.1.1.0) were synthesized as a constitutional isomer of sapphyrin by acid-catalyzed cyclization of 1,14-dibromo-5,10-diaryltripyrrin with 1,2-di(pyrro-2-ly)ethenes. These pentaphyrins display roughly planar structures and varying aromaticities depending upon the vinylene structures. The 19,20-ditolyl pentaphyrin gave an N-fused product and an unprecedented pyrrole-rearranged product, depending upon the oxidation conditions. Remarkably, upon the metalation with CuCl, the N-fused product and the pyrrole-rearranged product afforded an inner β-β coupled face-to-face CuII complex dimer and an outer β-β coupled lateral CuII complex dimer, respectively, in fairly good yields. Further, [22]pentaphyrin(2.0.1.1.0) fused with a NiII porphyrin was effectively dimerized upon oxidation with MnO2 to give a 16-16' directly linked dl-dimer.

Abstract
A one-step electrodeposition-assisted self-assembly technique has been developed for preparation of ZnTCPP@MOF films with three-dimensional mesoporous structure in a three-electrode system. The internal structure of the ZnTCPP@MOF films was tuned by adjusting the electrochemical deposition voltage, deposition time, and the concentration of ZnTCPP at room temperature. The ZnTCPP@MOF films under different deposition conditions were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The prepared ZnTCPP@MOF films exhibited excellent fluorescence properties, in which ZnTCPP molecules were encapsulated inside the MOF as fluorescent signal probes and structure-directing agents, which affected the electrochemical response of the ZnTCPP@MOF films. The sensing platform based on ZnTCPP@MOF film was used to detect microcystin with a wide determination range (1.0 × 10-12 mol/L ~ 1.0 × 10-5 mol/L), low determination limit (3.8 × 10-13 mol/L), and high sensitivity. More importantly, the strategy is simple, low-cost, green, and environmentally friendly, and it provides a new strategy for the direct use of MOFs films as signaling components.

Abstract
Expanded porphyrins represent emerging structures in realizing topological chirality; however, their inherent flexibility has hampered the effective chiral resolution. Herein, we rationally designed a decaphyrin 9, which could be separated into its enantiomers in the free-base form. The enantiomers showed noteworthy chiroptical properties, e.g., the intense circular dichroism response in the visible spectrum, and high absorption dissymmetry factors (gabs) of 0.036 at 618 nm. Theoretical analyses further explained the origin of the high gabs value.

Abstract
The meso-unsubstituted expanded porphyrinoid 3, incorporating two carbazole moieties, acts as an effective ligand for Co(ii) and permits the isolation and X-ray diffraction-based characterization of a 6 : 3 metal-to-ligand metallocage complex that converts spontaneously to the constituent 2 : 1 metal-to-ligand metalloring species in chloroform solution. The discrete metalloring is formed directly when the Co(ii) complex is crystallized from supersaturated solutions, whereas crystallization from more dilute solutions favors the metallocage. Studies with two other test cations, Pd(ii) and Zn(ii), revealed exclusive formation of the monomeric metalloring complexes with no evidence of higher order species being formed. Structural, electrochemical and UV-vis-NIR absorption spectral studies provide support for the conclusion that the Pd(ii) complex is less distorted and more effectively conjugated than its Co(ii) and Zn(ii) congeners, an inference further supported by TD-DFT calculations. The findings reported here underscore how expanded porphyrins can support coordination modes, including bimetallic complexes and self-assembled cage structures, that are not necessarily easy to access using more traditional ligand systems. Carbazole containing expanded carbaporphyrinoid ligand supports the formation of 2 : 1 metal-to-ligand complexes with Pd, Co, and Zn. Solid-state studies also revealed formation of a 6 : 3 metal-to-ligand metallocage in the case of Co complexation.![]()

Abstract
Recently, Baird (anti)aromaticity has been referred to as a description of excited-state (anti)aromaticity. With the term of Baird's rule, recent studies have intensively verified that the Hückel aromatic [4n + 2]π (or antiaromatic [4n]π) molecules in the ground state are reversed to give Baird aromatic [4n]π (or Baird antiaromatic [4n + 2]π) molecules in the excited states. Since the Hückel (anti)aromaticity has great influence on the molecular properties and reaction mechanisms, the Baird (anti)aromaticity has been expected to act as a dominant factor in governing excited-state properties and processes, which has attracted intensive scientific investigations for the verification of the concept of reversed aromaticity in the excited states. In this scientific endeavor, porphyrinoids have recently played leading roles in the demonstration of the aromaticity reversal in the excited states and its conceptual development. The distinct structural and electronic nature of porphyhrinoids depending on their (anti)aromaticity allow the direct observation of excited-state aromaticity reversal, Baird's rule. The explicit experimental demonstration with porphyrinoids has contributed greatly to its conceptual development and application in novel functional organic materials. Based on the significant role of porphyrinoids in the field of excited-state aromaticity, this review provides an overview of the experimental verification of the reversal concept of excited-state aromaticity by porphyrinoids and the recent progress on its conceptual application in novel functional molecules.

Abstract
Derived from a Pd-catalyzed oxidative C-H/C-H coupling reaction, two giant imidazole-based [60]tetradecaphyrins adopting stable figure-eight geometry together with one [30]heptaphyrin are obtained by [5 + 2] MacDonald condensations in one pot. The directional imidazole is believed to play a vital role for the diverse cyclization and conformation stabilization.

Abstract
On-surface synthesis is emerging as a highly rational bottom-up methodology for the synthesis of molecular structures that are unattainable or complex to obtain by wet chemistry. Here, oligomers of meta-polyaniline, a known ferromagnetic polymer, were synthesized from para-aminophenol building-blocks via an unexpected and highly specific on-surface formal 1,4 Michael-type addition at the meta position, driven by the reduction of the aminophenol molecule. We rationalize this dehydrogenation and coupling reaction mechanism with a combination of in situ scanning tunneling and non-contact atomic force microscopies, high-resolution synchrotron-based X-ray photoemission spectroscopy and first-principles calculations. This study demonstrates the capability of surfaces to selectively modify local molecular conditions to redirect well-established synthetic routes, such as Michael coupling, towards the rational synthesis of new covalent nanostructures.

Synthesis, Structure, and Magnetic Properties of Linear Trinuclear CuII and NiII Complexes of Porphyrin Analogues Embedded with Binaphthol Units. Symmetry (Basel) 2020. Abstract
A porphyrin analogue embedded with (S)-1,1′-bi-2-naphthol units was synthesized without reducing optical purity of the original binaphthol unit. This new macrocyclic ligand provides the hexaanionic N4O4 coordination environment that enables a linear array of three metal ions. That is, it provides the square planar O4 donor set for the central metal site and the distorted square planar N2O2 donor set for the terminal metal sites. In fact, a CuII3 complex with a Cu(1)–Cu(2) distance of 2.910 Å, a Cu(1)–Cu(2)–Cu(1′) angle of 174.7°, and a very planar Cu2O2 diamond core was obtained. The variable-temperature 1H-NMR study of the CuII3 complex showed increasing paramagnetic shifts for the naphthyl protons as temperature increased, which suggests strong antiferromagnetic coupling of CuII ions. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility indicated antiferromagnetic coupling both for the CuII3 complex (J = −434 cm−1) and for the NiII3 complex (J = −49 cm−1). The linear (L)M(µ-OR)2M(µ-OR)2M(L) core in a rigid macrocycle cavity made of aromatic components provides robust metal complexes that undergo reversible ligation at the apical sites of the central metal.

Localized
orbital coupled cluster theory has recently emerged as
a nonempirical alternative to DFT for large systems. Intuitively,
one might expect such methods to perform less well for highly delocalized
systems. In the present work, we apply both canonical CCSD(T) approximations
and a variety of localized approximations to a set of flexible expanded
porphyrins—macrocycles that can switch between Hückel,
figure-eight, and Möbius topologies under external stimuli.
Both minima and isomerization transition states are considered. We
find that Möbius(-like) structures have much stronger static
correlation character than the remaining structures, and that this
causes significant errors in DLPNO-CCSD(T) and even DLPNO-CCSD(T1) approaches, unless TightPNO cutoffs are employed. If sub-kcal
mol–1 accuracy with respect to canonical relative
energies is required even for Möbius-type systems (or other
systems plagued by strong static correlation), then Nagy and Kallay’s
LNO-CCSD(T) method with “tight” settings is the suitable
localized approach. We propose the present POLYPYR21 data set as a
benchmark for localized orbital methods or, more broadly, for the
ability of lower-level methods to handle energetics with strongly
varying degrees of static correlation.

Abstract
Highly twisted structures of expanded porphyrin provide a prominent basis to unravel the relationship between aromaticity and chirality. Here we report the synthesis of bis-Ge(IV) complexes of [38]octaphyrin that display rigid figure-eight structures. Two bis-Ge(IV) [38]octaphyrin isomers with respect to the stereochemistry of the axial hydroxy groups on the germanium ions were obtained and found to be aromatic. Upon oxidation with MnO2 , these [38]octaphyrin complexes were converted to a single syn-type isomer of [36]octaphyrin with retained figure-eight conformation. The enantiomers have been successfully separated by HPLC equipped with a chiral stationary phase. While aromatic [38]octaphyrin Ge(IV) complexes showed quite large molar circular dichroism of up to Δϵ=1500 M-1 cm-1 with a dissymmetry factor gabs of 0.035, weakly antiaromatic [36]octaphyrin Ge(IV) complexes underscored moderate values; Δϵ=540 M-1 cm-1 with gabs of 0.023. Thus, the figure-eight octaphyrin scaffold has been proved to be an attractive platform for novel chiroptical materials with tunable aromaticity.

Abstract
A novel bis-palladium(II) complex of doubly N-confused octaphyrin (Pd[Formula: see text]-2) adopting a Möbius-twisted topological structure was synthesized and characterized. Due to the effective 36[Formula: see text]-electronic delocalization over the Möbius-twisted octaphyrin scaffold, characteristic Soret and Q-like absorption features were observed in the near-infrared (NIR) region. However, the complex Pd[Formula: see text]-2 exhibited weak aromatic character attributed to the distinct cross-conjugated resonance contribution as inferred from the 1H NMR chemical shifts as well as theoretical assessments ([Formula: see text] nucleus-independent chemical shift (NICS)). Since the bis-palladium(II) complexation of doubly N-confused octaphyrin 2 imparted significant conformational stability, topologically chiral enantiomers of Pd[Formula: see text]-2 were successfully separated as ([Formula: see text]- and ([Formula: see text]-twisted forms. The resulting isomers revealed relatively large circular dichroism (CD) responses with an absorption anisotropy factor of [Formula: see text] [Formula: see text] 0.009 in the NIR region ([Formula: see text] 823 nm). In addition, the cyclic voltammogram of Pd[Formula: see text]-2 revealed redox-rich properties due to its large [Formula: see text]-conjugated system.

Abstract
Vinylene-bridged hexaphyrin(2.1.2.1.2.1) was synthesized from dipyrrolyl diphenylethenes by acid-catalyzed condensation reactions. Freebase hexaphyrin(2.1.2.1.2.1) forms a distorted structure with non-aromatic characteristics. The aromaticity and molecular configuration of non-planar hexaphyrin(2.1.2.1.2.1) can be controlled by insertion of metal ions. Freebase and zinc complexes show a distorted structure without macrocyclic aromaticity, whereas copper complexes show a figure-of-eight structure with macrocyclic aromaticity. It is the first example of aromaticity conversion of a distorted expanded porphyrin involving vinylene bridges.

A new rectangular-shaped carbadecaphyrin was successfully synthesized by introducing a terphenylene unit ( m- m- m) in the macrocyclic core. The terphenylene moiety offers an open framework with multiple binding pockets to stabilize two Rh(I) ions in the core. The photophysical and structural studies reveal the non-aromatic character of the ligand and its bis-Rh(I) complex.

Abstract
A fully conjugated three-dimensional (3D) expanded carbaporphyrin (2) was prepared in a one-pot procedure that involves a [2+4] condensation reaction between a dibenzo[ g, p]chrysene-bearing tetrapyrrole precursor (1) and pentafluorobenzaldehyde, followed by oxidation. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that 2 possesses a cage-like structure consisting of four dipyrromethenes and two bridging dibenzo[ g, p]chrysene units. As prepared, 2 is nonaromatic as inferred from UV-vis-NIR and 1H NMR spectroscopy and a near-zero (-1.75) nucleus-independent chemical shift (NICS) value. In contrast, after protonation with trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), the cage gains global aromatic character as inferred from the large negative NICS value (-11.63) and diatropic ring current observed in the anisotropy of the induced current density (ACID) plot, as well as the ca. 8-fold increase in the excited state lifetime. In addition, the size of the cavity increases to ca. 143 Å3 upon protonation as deduced from a single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. To our knowledge, this is the largest carbaporphyrin prepared to date and the first with a fully conjugated 3D cage structure whose size and electronic features may be tuned through protonation.

Abstract
The concept of chemical topology has generated considerable interest among chemists and one of the state-of-the-art topics is Möbius topology in cyclic π-conjugated molecules. In this regard, expanded porphyrins have been extensively studied because of their facile topological interconversions and attractive optoelectronic properties. A typical example involves [28]hexaphyrins: they show topological conversion between planar Hückel and twisted Möbius topologies owing to their flexible structure. With this in mind, we designed a [28]hexaphyrin where one dimethine pyrrole unit was replaced with dithieno[3,4-b:3',4'-d]thiophene (β-DTT), aiming at a reversible switching between macrocyclic and cross-conjugated π-systems by a change in molecular topologies. Considering that the β-DTT unit can offer both macrocyclic and cross-conjugated π-circuits, we envisioned that a combination of the topological interconversion of [28]hexaphyrin with the two π-circuits of the β-DTT unit would enable a reversible switching between macrocyclic and cross-conjugated π-circuits on Möbius and Hückel topologies, respectively, by a simple conformational change. Unexpectedly, the hexaphyrin revealed a unique, unprecedented π-system switching between a Möbius cross-conjugated π-system and a Hückel antiaromatic π-system, which was fully supported by both experimental and theoretical investigations. Meanwhile, the [28]hexaphyrin was also found to be redox interconvertible with the corresponding [26]hexaphyrin with a Hückel cross-conjugated π-system. These results demonstrate that the β-DTT unit is a new effective motif to realize π-system switching by changing molecular and π-system topologies. Importantly, external stimuli, i.e., solvent, as well as oxidation/reduction can be used to trigger the topological changes in expanded porphyrins with the help of the β-DTT unit.

Abstract
An unstable conjugated homoporphyrin was successfully stabilized by introducing meso-aryl substitutents. It was evident from the moderate diatropic ring current found by NMR analysis that the newly formed 20π conjugated free base and its protonated form exhibited Möbius aromatic character. Furthermore, complexation as a ligand with an RhI ion afforded a unique binding mode and retained the Möbius aromaticity. Overall, these compounds are the smallest Möbius aromatic molecules, as confirmed by spectral and crystal-structure analysis and supported by theoretical studies.

Abstract
Siamese-twin porphyrin is a pyrazole-containing expanded porphyrin incorporating two porphyrin-like binding pockets. The macrocycle, however, does not possess an aromatic π system but rather two separated conjugation pathways that are isolated by the pyrazole junctions. Mono- and bimetallic complexes of the Siamese-twin porphyrin are known. This work addresses in detail the electronic consequences that monometalation (with PdII) has on the electronic properties of the nonmetalated binding pocket by studying the solid-state structure, acid/base, and electrochemical properties of the monopalladium twin-porphyrin complex. Specifically, metalation leads to a switch of the protonation sites of the free-base pocket. The unusual location of the protons at adjacent pyrrolic nitrogen atoms was revealed using X-ray diffraction and 1D/2D NMR spectroscopy. The one-electron oxidation and reduction events are both ligand-centered, as derived by spectroelectrochemical and electron paramagnetic resonance measurements, but are located on different halves of the molecule. Single-electron oxidation (-0.32 V vs Fc/Fc+) generated an organic radical centered on the metal-coordinating side of the ligand, while single-electron reduction (-1.59 V vs Fc/Fc+) led to the formation of an organic radical on the free-base side of the macrocycle. Density functional theory calculations corroborated the redox chemistry observed. The possibility of selectively preparing the monometallic complexes carrying two distinct redox sites-a metal-containing oxidation site and a metal-free reduction site-further expands the potential of Siamese-twin porphyrins to serve as an adjustable platform for multielectron redox processes in chemical catalysis or molecular electronics applications.

Abstract
The use of cyclic polyene perimeter-model approaches, such as Gouterman's four-orbital model and Michl's perimeter model, to analyze trends in the electronic structures and optical properties of expanded, contracted, and isomeric porphyrins is described with an emphasis on the use of magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectroscopy to validate the results of TD-DFT calculations. Trends in the electronic structures and optical properties of isomeric porphyrins are examined by comparing the properties of porphycenes, corrphycenes, hemiporphycenes, isoporphycenes, N-confused and neoconfused porphyrins, and norroles, whereas those of ring-contracted porphyrins are examined by comparing the properties of subporphyrins, triphyrins, and vacataporphyrins. The ring-expanded compounds that are examined include cyclo[n]pyrroles, [22]pentaphyrins(1.1.1.1.1), sapphyrins, smaragdyrins, isosmaragdyrins, orangarins, ozaphyrins, [26]hexaphyrins(1.1.1.1.1.1), rubyrins, rosarins, amethyrins, isoamethyrins, bronzaphyrins, and doubly N-confused hexaphyrins.

Abstract
This review underscores the conformational flexibility of porphyrinoids, a unique class of functional molecules, starting from the smallest triphyrins(1.1.1) via [18]porphyrins(1.1.1.1) and concluding with a variety of expanded porphyrinoids and heteroporphyrinoids, including the enormous [96]tetracosaphyrin(1.0.1.0.1.0.1.0.1.0.1.0.1.0.1.0.1.0.1.0.1.0.1.0). The specific flexibility of porphyrinoids has been documented as instrumental in the designing or redesigning of macrocyclic frames, particularly in the search for adjustable platforms for coordination or organometallic chemistry, anion binding, or mechanistic switches in molecular devices. A structural prearrangement to coordinate one or more metal ions has been outlined. The coverage of the topic focuses on representative examples of geometry or conformational rearrangements for each selected class of the numerous porphyrinoids accordingly categorized by the number of built-in carbo- or heterocycles.

Abstract
A rectangular 5,20-di(4-pyridyl) [26]hexaphyrin was reduced with NaBH4 to give the corresponding twisted Möbius aromatic [28]hexaphyrin. Subsequent double N-methylation gave a dicationic 5,20-di(N-methyl-4-pyridinium) [28]hexaphyrin, which was converted to a doubly zwitterionic and Hückel antiaromatic [28]hexaphyrin upon deprotonation with sodium methoxide.
