Abstract
Nitrogen-containing heterocycles possessing N-alkenyl substituents are an important structural motif. However, the synthetic methods reported thus far cannot selectively synthesize the Z stereoisomer on the basis of the stereochemistry of the substituted alkenes. Herein, we report the stereoconvergent coupling of heterocycles and alkenyl halides consisting of a mixture of E/Z stereoisomers, which selectively afforded the thermodynamically less stable Z-coupling product. Mechanistic studies suggest that a nickel photoredox catalyst facilitates the formation of N-centered heteroarene radicals.

Abstract
The catalytic acceptorless dehydrogenation (ADH) of saturated N-heterocycles has recently gained considerable attention as a promising strategy for hydrogen release from liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs). Recently, a simple tBuOK base-promoted ADH of N-heterocycles was developed by Yu et al. (Adv. Synth. Catal. 2019, 361, 3958). However, it is still open as to how the tBuOK plays a catalytic role in the ADH process. Herein, our density functional study reveals that the tBuOK catalyzes the ADH of 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline (THQ) through a quasi-metal-ligand bifunctional catalytic channel or a base-catalyzed pathway with close energy barriers. The hydride transfer in the first dehydrogenation process is determined to be the rate determining step, and the second dehydrogenation can proceed directly from 34DHQ regulated by the tBuOK. In addition, the computational results show that the cooperation of a suitable alkali metal ion with the tBuO- group is so critical that the tBuOLi and the isolated tBuO- are both inferior to tBuOK as a dehydrogenation catalyst.

Abstract
Aryl sulfides are common and ubiquitous motifs in natural products and pharmaceuticals. Presented herein is the first example of the synthesis of diaryl sulfide derivatives via dehydroaromatization under simple basic conditions. Dehydroaromatization reactions between indolines or cyclohexanones with aryl thiols are performed in an environmentally benign manner by the use of air (molecular oxygen) as the oxidant, with producing water as the only byproduct. The methodology provides a simple and practical route to diaryl sulfides with wide functional groups in good to excellent yields. Preliminary mechanistic studies suggest that a radical process is involved in the transformation.

Abstract
A new and metal-free three-component method for the synthesis of 2,4-disubstituted quinolines via the reactions of anilines, α-keto acids and alkyl lactates is reported. The reactions proceed in the presence of p-toluene sulfonic acid (p-TSA) and tert-butyl peroxybenzoate (TBPB) to provide diverse quinoline products via the construction of new CC double, C-C single and CN double bonds without producing any organic mass-based side product. Notably, the anti-inflammatory activity of the quinolines has been investigated by measuring their ability to inhibit NO release by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induced RAW264.7 cells, leading to the identification of 4i, 4t and 4x as potent anti-inflammatory compounds in vitro.

Abstract
Quinoline is a versatile heterocycle that is part of numerous natural products and countless drugs. During the last decades, this scaffold also became widely used as ligand in organometallic catalysis. Therefore, access to functionalized quinolines is of great importance and continuous efforts have been made to develop efficient and regioselective synthetic methods. In this regard, C-H functionalization through transition metal catalysis, which is nowadays the Graal of organic green chemistry, represents the most attractive strategy. We aim herein at providing a comprehensive review of methods that allow site-selective metal-catalyzed C-H functionalization of quinolines, or their quinoline N-oxides counterparts, with a specific focus on their scope and limitations, as well as mechanistic aspects if that accounts for the selectivity.

Abstract
Catalytic dehydrogenation (CD) via visible-light photoredox catalysis provides an efficient route for the synthesis of aromatic compounds. However, access to N-aryl amines, which are widely utilized synthetic moieties, via visible-light-induced CD remains a significant challenge, because of the difficulty in controlling the reactivity of amines under photocatalytic conditions. Here, the visible-light-induced photocatalytic synthesis of N-aryl amines was achieved by the CD of allylic amines. The unusual strategy using C6F5I as an hydrogen-atom acceptor enables the mild and controlled CD of amines bearing various functional groups and activated C–H bonds, suppressing side-reaction of the reactive N-aryl amine products. Thorough mechanistic studies suggest the involvement of single-electron and hydrogen-atom transfers in a well-defined order to provide a synergistic effect in the control of the reactivity. Notably, the back-electron transfer process prevents the desired product from further reacting under oxidative conditions. The synergy of SET, HAT, and BET enables a visible-light induced catalytic dehydrogenation for the synthesis of N-aryl amines.![]()

Abstract
An aerobic dehydrogenation of nitrogen-containing heterocycles catalyzed by Grubbs catalyst is developed. The reaction is applicable to various nitrogen-containing heterocycles. The exceptionally high functional group compatibility of this method was confirmed by the oxidation of an unprotected dihydroindolactam V to indolactam V. Furthermore, by taking advantage of the oxygen-mediated structural change of the Grubbs catalyst, we integrated ring-closing metathesis and subsequent aerobic dehydrogenation to develop the novel assisted-tandem catalysis using molecular oxygen as a chemical trigger. The utility of the assisted-tandem catalysis was demonstrated by the concise synthesis of N-containing fused heteroarenes including a natural antibiotic, pyocyanine.

Abstract
Through a rapid screening of Cp*Ir complexes based on a turn-on type fluorescence readout, a [Cp*Ir(dipyrido[3,2-a : 2',3'-c]phenazine)Cl]+ complex was found to catalyze the blue-light promoted dehydrogenation of N-heterocycles under physiological conditions. In the dehydrogenation of tetrahydroisoquinolines, the catalyst preferentially yielded the monodehydrogenated product, accompanying H2O2 generation. We surmise that this mechanism may be reminiscent of flavin-dependent oxidases.

Abstract
Catalytic dehydrogenation and hydrogenation of amines and alcohols are important in the synthesis of fine chemicals. Despite several efficient homogeneous catalysts having been identified, highly active heterogeneous catalysts remain elusive, although they would meet an unmet need. Here, we show that bimetallic Pd-Au nanoparticles with Pd-to-Au molar ratios of 3:1 immobilized on multiwall carbon nanotubes (Pd3Au1/CNT) display high catalytic activity in the oxidant-free and acceptorless dehydrogenation and hydrogenation of N- and O-containing heterocyclic compounds, amines/imines, and alcohols/ketones. Transmission electron microscopy analysis demonstrates the preferential exposure of Pd3Au1(111) facets on the Pd3Au1/CNT catalyst. Mechanistic insights combining experimental data with density functional theory calculations reveal that the Pd3Au1(111) surface enhances both dehydrogenation and hydrogenation reactions and provides a rationale for the observed enhancements.

Abstract
Aromatic N-heterocycles such as quinolines, isoquinolines, and indolines are synthesized via sodium tert-butoxide-promoted oxidative dehydrogenation of the saturated heterocycles in DMSO solution. This reaction proceeds under mild reaction conditions and has a good functional group tolerance. Mechanistic studies suggest a radical pathway involving hydrogen abstraction of dimsyl radicals from the N-H bond or α-C-H of the substrates and subsequent oxidation of the nitrogen or α-aminoalkyl radicals.

Abstract
Core–shell nanocatalysts are attractive due to their versatility and stability. Here, we describe cobalt nanoparticles encapsulated within graphitic shells prepared via the pyrolysis of a cationic poly‐ionic liquid (PIL) with a cobalt(II) chloride anion. The resulting material has a core–shell structure that displays excellent activity and selectivity in the self‐dehydrogenation and hetero‐dehydrogenation of primary amines to their corresponding imines. Furthermore, the catalyst exhibits excellent activity in the synthesis of secondary imines from substrates with various reducible functional groups (C=C, C≡C and C≡N) and amino acid derivatives.

Abstract
Heterocycles are a ubiquitous substructure in organic small molecules designed for use in materials and medicines. Recent work in catalysis has focused on enabling access to new heterocycle structures by sp3 C-H functionalization on alkyl side-chain substituents-especially at the heterobenzylic position-with more than two hundred manuscripts published just within the last ten years. Rather than describing in detail each of these reports, in this mini-review we attempt to highlight gaps in existing techniques. A semi-quantitative overview of ongoing work strongly suggests that several specific heterocycle types and bond formations outside of C-C, C-N, and C-O have been almost completely overlooked.

Abstract
We report here for the first time the catalytic oxidative dehydrogenation of N-heterocycles by a visible-light organo-photoredox catalyst with low catalyst loading (0.1-1 mol %). The reaction proceeds efficiently under base- and additive-free conditions with ambient air at room temperature. The utility of this benign approach is demonstrated by the synthesis of various pharmaceutically relevant N-heteroarenes such as quinoline, quinoxaline, quinazoline, acridine, and indole.
