Abstract
Room-temperature photoactivation of the first- and second-generation PN3P-pincer nickel azido complexes 1a and 1b in the presence of CO2 or CS2 afforded N-bound carbamates, dithiocarbamates, and isothiocyanates, providing insights into CO2 and CS2 activation and demonstrating how a seemingly small difference in the ligand structure significantly influences the reactivity. Theoretical calculations disclosed that the charge of the phosphorus atom plays a critical role in determining the nitrogen atom transfer to form a plausible nickel phosphiniminato intermediate.

Abstract
We detail the relative role of ancillary ligand electron-donating ability in comparison to the locus of oxidation (either metal or ligand) on the electrophilic reactivity of a series of oxidized Mn salen nitride complexes. The electron-donating ability of the ancillary salen ligand was tuned via the para-phenolate substituent (R = CF3, H, tBu, OiPr, NMe2, NEt2) in order to have minimal effect on the geometry at the metal center. Through a suite of experimental (electrochemistry, electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy) and theoretical (density functional theory) techniques, we have demonstrated that metal-based oxidation to [MnVI(SalR)N]+ occurs for R = CF3, H, tBu, OiPr, while ligand radical formation to [MnV(SalR)N]+˙ occurs with the more electron-donating substituents R = NMe2, NEt2. We next investigated the reactivity of the electrophilic nitride with triarylphosphines to form a MnIV phosphoraneiminato adduct and determined that the rate of reaction decreases as the electron-donating ability of the salen para-phenolate substituent is increased. Using a Hammett plot, we find a break in the Hammett relation between R = OiPr and R = NMe2, without a change in mechanism, consistent with the locus of oxidation exhibiting a dominant effect on nitride reactivity, and not the overall donating ability of the ancillary salen ligand. This work differentiates between the subtle and interconnected effects of ancillary ligand electron-donating ability, and locus of oxidation, on electrophilic nitride reactivity.

Abstract
Oxidation of a series of CrV nitride salen complexes (CrVNSalR) with different para-phenolate substituents (R = CF3, tBu, NMe2) was investigated to determine how the locus of oxidation (either metal or ligand) dictates reactivity at the nitride. Para-phenolate substituents were chosen to provide maximum variation in the electron-donating ability of the tetradentate ligand at a site remote from the metal coordination sphere. We show that one-electron oxidation affords CrVI nitrides ([CrVINSalR]+; R = CF3, tBu) and a localized CrV nitride phenoxyl radical for the more electron-donating NMe2 substituent ([CrVNSalNMe2]•+). The facile nitride homocoupling observed for the MnVI analogues was significantly attenuated for the CrVI complexes due to a smaller increase in nitride character in the M≡N π* orbitals for Cr relative to Mn. Upon oxidation, both the calculated nitride natural population analysis (NPA) charge and energy of molecular orbitals associated with the {Cr≡N} unit change to a lesser extent for the CrV ligand radical derivative ([CrVNSalNMe2]•+) in comparison to the CrVI derivatives ([CrVINSalR]+; R = CF3, tBu). As a result, [CrVNSalNMe2]•+ reacts with B(C6F5)3, thus exhibiting similar nucleophilic reactivity to the neutral CrV nitride derivatives. In contrast, the CrVI derivatives ([CrVINSalR]+; R = CF3, tBu) act as electrophiles, displaying facile reactivity with PPh3 and no reaction with B(C6F5)3. Thus, while oxidation to the ligand radical does not change the reactivity profile, metal-based oxidation to CrVI results in umpolung, a switch from nucleophilic to electrophilic reactivity at the terminal nitride.

Abstract
Calcium nitridonickelate(II) Ca2NiN2 has been prepared through a high-temperature and high-pressure azide-mediated redox reaction, demonstrating that this method can stabilise nitrides of late transition metals in relatively high oxidation states. Ca2NiN2 crystallizes in the Na2HgO2 structure type and displays low-dimensional antiferromagnetic ordering of Ni2+ spins.

Abstract
Previous work was successful in synthesizing a nickel amine, [CztBu(PyriPr)(NH2-PyriPr)], by double C-H activation and functionalization via irradiating a disphenoidal Ni(II) azido complex, [CztBu(PyriPr)2NiN3]. The present work seeks to expand upon the earlier research and to substitute the metal with iron or cobalt. Density functional theory (DFT)-B3LYP/6-31+G(d') and APFD/Def2TZVP-was used to simulate the generation of an intermediate with significant nitridyl radical character after the loss of N2 from the starting azido complex. DFT and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) were also used to propose a detailed pathway comprised of intermediates of low, intermediate, or high spin multiplicity and photogenerated excited states for the reaction of the azido complex, [CztBu(PyriPr)2MN3], to form the amine complex [CztBu(PyriPr)M(NH2-PyriPr)], M = Co, Ni, or Fe.

Abstract
A dinickel(0)-N2 complex, stabilized with a rigid acridane-based PNP pincer ligand, was studied for its ability to activate C(sp2)-H and C(sp2)-O bonds. Stabilized by a Ni-μ-N2-Na+ interaction, it activates C-H bonds of unfunctionalized arenes, affording nickel-aryl and nickel-hydride products. Concomitantly, two sodium cations get reduced to Na(0), which was identified and quantified by several methods. Our experimental results, including product analysis and kinetic measurements, strongly suggest that this C(sp2)-H activation does not follow the typical oxidative addition mechanism occurring at a low-valent single metal centre. Instead, via a bimolecular pathway, two powerfully reducing nickel ions cooperatively activate an arene C-H bond and concomitantly reduce two Lewis acidic alkali metals under ambient conditions. As a novel synthetic protocol, nickel(ii)-aryl species were directly synthesized from nickel(ii) precursors in benzene or toluene with excess Na under ambient conditions. Furthermore, when the dinickel(0)-N2 complex is accessed via reduction of the nickel(ii)-phenyl species, the resulting phenyl anion deprotonates a C-H bond of glyme or 15-crown-5 leading to C-O bond cleavage, which produces vinyl ether. The dinickel(0)-N2 species then cleaves the C(sp2)-O bond of vinyl ether to produce a nickel(ii)-vinyl complex. These results may provide a new strategy for the activation of C-H and C-O bonds mediated by a low valent nickel ion supported by a structurally rigidified ligand scaffold.

Abstract
Molecules with different resonance structures of similar importance, such as heterocumulenes and mesoionics, are prominent in many applications of chemistry, including 'click chemistry', photochemistry, switching and sensing. In coordination chemistry, similar chameleonic/schizophrenic entities are referred to as ambidentate/ambiphilic or cooperative ligands. Examples of these had remained, for a long time, limited to a handful of archetypal compounds that were mere curiosities. In this Review, we describe ambiphilicity - or, rather, 'charge frustration' - as a general guiding principle for ligand design and functional group transfer. We first give a historical account of organic zwitterions and discuss their electronic structures and applications. Our discussion then focuses on zwitterionic ligands and their metal complexes, such as those of ylidic and redox-active ligands. Finally, we present new approaches to single-atom transfer using cumulated small molecules and outline emerging areas, such as bond activation and stable donor-acceptor ligand systems for reversible 1e- chemistry or switching.

Abstract
High-valent iron-nitrido species are nitrogen analogues of iron-oxo species which are versatile reagents for C-H oxidation. Nonetheless, C-H activation by iron-nitrido species has been scarcely explored, as this is often hampered by their instability and short lifetime in solutions. Herein, the hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) reactivity of an Fe porphyrin nitrido species (2 c) toward C-H substrates was studied in solutions at room temperature, which was achieved by nanosecond laser flash photolysis (LFP) of its FeIII -azido precursor (1 c) supported by a bulky bis-pocket porphyrin ligand. C-H bonds with bond dissociation enthalpies (BDEs) of up to ≈84 kcal mol-1 could be activated, and the second-order rate constants (k2 ) are on the order of 102 -104 s-1 m-1 . The Fe-amido product formed after HAT could further release ammonia upon protonation.

Abstract
Osmium(ii) PNP pincer complexes bearing a hemilabile pyridyl-pyrazolide (PyrPz) ligand have been synthesised, and their reactivity towards Lewis acidic bismuth compounds has been examined. Reactions with BiCl3 resulted in chlorine-atom-transfer to give an osmium(iii) species. Reactions with cationic bismuth species led to adduct formation through N → Bi bond formation via the PyrPz ligand. Theoretical analyses revealed that steric interactions hamper Os → Bi bond formation and indicate that such interactions are possible upon reducing the steric profile around the osmium atom. Analytical techniques include NMR, IR, and EPR spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, elemental analysis and DFT calculations.

Abstract
The elementary dynamics following 355 nm-excitation of the complex, mer-[Co(dien)(N3)3], were studied in liquid dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solution using femtosecond-ultraviolet-pump/mid-infrared-to-near-ultraviolet probe spectroscopy in conjunction with electronic structure calculations based on density functional theory. Following the initial N3--to-Co charge transfer excitation, the parent complex undergoes an ultrafast metal-to-ligand back electron transfer (BET) within 2 ps thereby populating a metal-centered singlet excited state, 1MC, which can either repopulate the electronic ground state or cleave an azido ligand from the ligand sphere surrounding the metal center. From the asymptotic ground-state bleaching signal after 1 ns, a primary quantum yield for ligand loss of ca. 13% is estimated. The IR-spectrum of the product demonstrates that the photodissociation occurs selectively from the equatorial binding site thereby leading exclusively to the solvolysis product, mer-trans-[Co(dien)(N3)2(DMSO)]+, which features the solvent ligand in the equatorial coordination plane and the azides in the two axial positions. The remarkable photochemical selectivity is traced back to the initial BET and the nature of the intermediate state, 1MC, whose electronic structure entails occupancy of the σ-antibonding d(x2-y2)-orbital. A stereochemical scrambling at the stage of the primary penta-coordinated diazido product is kinetically inhibited on the singlet surface by an energy barrier of roughly 27 kJ mol-1. Primary penta-coordinated products that may be born on the triplet surface are funneled to their singlet ground-state preferentially from geometries with trans-oriented azido ligands thereby also preventing a stereochemical isomerization that could possibly arise from an intersystem crossing.

Abstract
Irradiation of a disphenoidal Ni(II) azido complex, [Cz tBu(Pyr iPr)2NiN3] (1), revealed an unprecedented nickel complex, [Cz tBu(Pyr iPr)(NH2-Pyr iPr)] (2), in >90% isolated yield. As evidenced by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, 2 is produced by double intramolecular C-H activation of a putative nickel-nitridyl intermediate, [Cz tBu(Pyr iPr)2Ni-⃛N•]. Calculations support the generation of an intermediate with significant nitridyl radical character after the loss of N2, which, in turn, undergoes tandem C-H activations, leading to functionalized intermediates and products. This is an unprecedented example of transient Ni-⃛N•-promoted intramolecular C-H functionalization, followed by a [2σ + 2π] addition, yielding bis-metallacyclic product 2. Complex 2 is also observed from the reaction of Ni(I) precursor Cz tBu(Pyr iPr)2Ni (3) and Me3SiN3, suggesting a unique thermal route toward a masked nickel-nitridyl intermediate.

Abstract
All three H atoms of the NH3 ligand of [Mn(depe)2(CO)(NH3)]+ are abstracted by an organic radical, giving a rare cyclophosphazenium cation; computations suggest that insertion of NHx into a Mn–P bond provides a strong thermodynamic driving force.

Abstract
Based on previous work related to the design and application of rigid tridentate phosphine-pyridine-phenyl coordination offered by a PNC-pincer ligand upon cyclometalation to nickel, the synthesis, spectroscopic and solid state characterization and redox-reactivity of two NiII(PNC) complexes featuring either a methyl (2CH3 ) or CF3 co-ligand (2CF3 ) are described. One-electron oxidation is proposed to furnish C-C reductive elimination, as deduced from a combined chemical, electrochemical, spectroscopic and computational study. One-electron reduction results in a ligand-centered radical anion, as supported by electrochemistry, UV spectroelectrochemistry, EPR spectroscopy, and DFT calculations. This further attenuates the breadth of chemical reactivity offered by such PNC-pincer ligands.

Abstract
An iridium(iii–v) imido series has been isolated that features an iridium complex with an unprecedented triplet ground state.
The iridium(iii/iv/v) imido redox series [Ir(NtBu){N(CHCHPtBu2)2}]0/+/2+ was synthesized and examined spectroscopically, magnetically, crystallographically and computationally. The monocationic iridium(iv) imide exhibits an electronic doublet ground state with considerable ‘imidyl’ character as a result of covalent Ir–NtBu bonding. Reduction gives the neutral imide [Ir(NtBu){N(CHCHPtBu2)2}] as the first example of an iridium complex with a triplet ground state. Its reactivity with respect to nitrene transfer to selected electrophiles (CO2) and nucleophiles (PMe3), respectively, is reported.

Abstract
Chemical transformations that result in either the formation or cleavage of carbon-heteroatom bonds are among the most important processes in the chemical sciences. Herein, we present a review on the reactivity of well-defined, late-transition metal complexes that result in the making and breaking of C-N, C-O and C-S bonds via fundamental organometallic reactions, i.e. oxidative addition, reductive elimination, insertion and elimination reactions. When appropriate, emphasis is placed on structural and spectroscopic characterization techniques, as well as mechanistic data.

Abstract
Thermal or photolytic activation of well-defined mononuclear [Co(N3)(PNP)] (PNP = 2,2'-bis(diisopropylphosphino)-4,4'-ditolylamido) results in the structurally characterized dinuclear species [Co(μ-N;κ3-P,N,N-PNPN)]2 (3), with two N-bridging phosphiniminato bridgeheads. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations indicate the intermediacy of a mononuclear cobalt-nitrido complex, followed by N-migratory insertion into a Co-P bond. Reaction of 3 with two equiv. HCl leads to rupture of the dimer with formation of mononuclear [CoCl(PNPNH)] (4) by protonation of the N-bridges.

Abstract
Redox non-innocent ligands have recently emerged as interesting tools to obtain new reactivity with a wide variety of metals. However, gold has almost been neglected in this respect. Here, we report mechanistic investigations related to a rare example of ligand-based redox chemistry in the coordination sphere of gold. The dinuclear metal-centered mixed-valent AuI -AuIII complex 1, supported by monoanionic diarylamido-diphosphine ligand PNPPr and with three chlorido ligands overall, undergoes a complex series of reactions upon halide abstraction by silver salt or Lewis acids such as gallium trichloride. Formation of the ultimate AuI -AuI complex 2 requires the intermediacy of AuI -AuI dimers 5 and 7 as well as the unique AuIII -AuIII complex 6, both of which are interconverted in a feedback loop. Finally, unprecedented ortho-selective C-H activation of the redox-active PNP ligand results in the carbazolyldiphosphine derivative PN*PPr via ligand-to-metal two-electron transfer. This work demonstrates that the redox-chemistry of gold may be significantly expanded and modified when using a reactive ligand scaffold.

Abstract

The novel tridentate
PNNOH pincer ligand LH features a reactive 2-hydroxypyridine functionality
as well as a bipyridyl-methylphosphine skeleton for meridional coordination.
This proton-responsive ligand coordinates in a straightforward manner
to RuCl(CO)(H)(PPh3)3 to generate complex 1. The methoxy-protected analogue LMe was also coordinated to Ru(II) for comparison. Both
species have been crystallographically characterized. Site-selective
deprotonation of the 2-hydroxypyridine functionality to give 1′ was achieved using both mild (DBU) and strong bases
(KOtBu and KHMDS), with no sign of involvement of the phosphinomethyl
side arm that was previously established as the reactive fragment.
Complex 1′ is catalytically active in the dehydrogenation
of formic acid to generate CO-free hydrogen in three consecutive runs
as well as for the dehydrogenative coupling of alcohols, giving high
conversions to different esters and outperforming structurally related
PNN ligands lacking the NOH fragment. DFT calculations
suggest more favorable release of H2 through reversible
reactivity of the hydroxypyridine functionality relative to the phosphinomethyl
side arm.

Abstract
Three new diruthenium oxyanion complexes have been prepared, crystallographically characterized, and screened for their potential to photochemically unmask a reactive Ru-Ru═O intermediate. The most promising candidate, Ru2(chp)4ONO2 (4, chp = 6-chloro-2-hydroxypyridinate), displays a set of signals centered around m/z = 733 amu in its MALDI-TOF mass spectrum, consistent with the formation of the [Ru2(chp)4O](+) ([6](+)) ion. These signals shift to 735 amu in 4*, which contains an (18)O-labeled nitrate. EPR spectroscopy and headspace GC-MS analysis indicate that NO2(•) is released upon photolysis of 4, also consistent with the formation of 6. Photolysis of 4 in CH2Cl2 at room temperature in the presence of excess PPh3 yields OPPh3 in 173% yield; control experiments implicate 6, NO2(•), and free NO3(-) as the active oxidants. Notably, Ru2(chp)4Cl (3) is recovered after photolysis. Since 3 is the direct precursor to 4, the results described herein constitute the first example of a synthetic cycle for oxygen atom transfer that makes use of light to generate a putative metal oxo intermediate.

Abstract
Coordination of a redox-active pyridine aminophenol ligand to Ru(II) followed by aerobic oxidation generates two diamagnetic Ru(III) species [1 a (cis) and 1 b (trans)] with ligand-centered radicals. The reaction of 1 a/1 b with excess NaN3 under inert atmosphere resulted in the formation of a rare bis(nitrido)-bridged trinuclear ruthenium complex with two nonlinear asymmetrical Ru-N-Ru fragments. The spontaneous reduction of the ligand centered radical in the parent 1 a/1 b supports the oxidation of a nitride (N(3-) ) to half an equivalent of N2 . The trinuclear omplex is reactive toward TEMPO-H, tin hydrides, thiols, and dihydrogen.
