Abstract
Alcohols are abundant and attractive feedstock molecules for organic synthesis. Many methods for their functionalization require them to first be converted into a more activated derivative, while recent years have seen a vast increase in the number of complexity-building transformations that directly harness unprotected alcohols. This Review discusses how transition metal catalysis can be used toward this goal. These transformations are broadly classified into three categories. Deoxygenative functionalizations, representing derivatization of the C-O bond, enable the alcohol to act as a leaving group toward the formation of new C-C bonds. Etherifications, characterized by derivatization of the O-H bond, represent classical reactivity that has been modernized to include mild reaction conditions, diverse reaction partners, and high selectivities. Lastly, chain functionalization reactions are described, wherein the alcohol group acts as a mediator in formal C-H functionalization reactions of the alkyl backbone. Each of these three classes of transformation will be discussed in context of intermolecular arylation, alkylation, and related reactions, illustrating how catalysis can enable alcohols to be directly harnessed for organic synthesis.

Abstract
A series of modular ImPy-carbene-Au(I) complexes are synthesized and fully characterized both in the solid state and in solution. The presence of oligoaryl units (phenyl and thienyl rings) at the C5-position of the ImPy core (in close proximity to the gold center) imprints on the organometallic species fine-tunable and predictable catalytic properties. A marked accelerating effect was recorded in several [Au(I)]-catalyzed electrophilic activations of unsaturated hydrocarbons when a CF3-containing aromatic ring was accommodated at the ImPy core.

Abstract
This review considers phosphine and N-heterocyclic carbene complexes of gold(I) that are used as (pre)catalysts for a range of reactions in organic synthesis. These are divided according to the structure of the ligand, with the narrative focusing on studies that offer a quantitative comparison between the ligands and readily available or widely used existing systems.

Abstract
The visible-light photoredox/[Co(III)] cocatalyzed dehydrogenative functionalization of cyclic and acyclic styryl derivatives with carboxylic acids is documented. The methodology enables the chemo- and regioselective allylic functionalization of styryl compounds, leading to allylic carboxylates (32 examples) under stoichiometric acceptorless conditions. Intermolecular as well as intramolecular variants are documented in high yields (up to 82%). A mechanistic rationale is also proposed on the basis of a combined experimental and spectroscopic investigation.

Abstract
A frustrated Lewis pair (FLP)-catalyzed allylation of allyl alcohols with electron-rich arenes has been developed. Interestingly, in this reaction, the electron-rich arenes and allyl alcohols are dehydrated in water. What's more, water was the sole byproduct of the reaction. In this protocol, various allyl alcohols can be converted into allyl cations and attacked by the electron-rich arenes to form aryl cation intermediates. Finally, the aryl cation intermediates are deprotonated to give the 1,3-diarylpropenes. In this protocol, indole allyl alcohols can undergo a bimolecular ring closure reaction, and structurally diverse tetrahydroindolo[3,2-b]carbazoles could be smoothly obtained. The reaction is not sensitive to oxygen and has been performed on a gram-scale.

A Ni(ClO4)2-catalyzed enantioselective [2 + 2] cycloaddition of N-allenamides with cyclic N-sulfonylketimines was developed, which regioselectively occurred at the proximal CC bonds of the N-allenamides. Broad substrate scope of N-allenamides and cyclic N-sulfonylketimines was observed. A range of fused polysubstituted azetidines bearing quaternary stereocenters were afforded in good yields and with excellent enantioselectivities (up to 99%).
