Abstract
A bimetallic, two-coordinated carbene-metal-amine (cMa) Au(I) complex featuring a twisted tandem carbene structure (NHC1-Au-NHC2-Au-carbazolyl) was synthesized. The molecular structure in single crystals revealed a large dihedral angle between the two carbene ligands, while the bridged carbene NHC2 and carbazolyl (Cz) ligands were coplanar. A bluish green thermally stimulated delayed phosphorescence (TSDP) was observed in crystals with an emission lifetime over 70 μs, which can be attributed to the spin allowed diabatic population of a high-lying emissive triplet state from the 3LE characterized low-lying ones. The small rotation energy barrier of Cz along the coordination bond allowed conformers with large dihedral angles between NHC2 and Cz. The ICT characterized S1 state was consequently stabilized to achieve a thermally accessible energy gap to facilitate ISC between triplets and the S1, leading to the thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF). Simultaneous TSDP and TADF dual emission can be recorded in its doped polymer film owing to the coexistence of these different conformers.

Abstract
Imidazolium salts have ubiquitous applications in energy research, catalysis, materials and medicinal sciences. Here, we report a new strategy for the synthesis of diverse heteroatom-functionalized imidazolium and imidazolinium salts from easily available 1,4-diaza-1,3-butadienes in one step. The strategy relies on a discovered family of unprecedented nucleophilic addition/cyclization reactions with trialkyl orthoformates and heteroatomic nucleophiles. To probe general areas of application, synthesized N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) precursors were feasible for direct metallation to give functionalized M/carbene complexes (M = Pd, Ni, Cu, Ag, Au), which were isolated in individual form. The utility of chloromethyl function for the postmodification of the synthesized salts and Pd/carbene complexes was demonstrated. The obtained complexes and imidazolium salts demonstrated good activities in Pd- or Ni-catalyzed model cross-coupling and C-H activation reactions.

Abstract
Various novel (a)chiral 4,5-disubstituted 1-aryl-3-alkyl-imidazolium salts were synthesized via the multicomponent reaction of diketone derivatives, sterically congested arylamines, and alkylamines. Moreover, two novel unsymmetrical bulky cycloalkyl-based NHC-Pd complexes proved highly active as catalysts for Suzuki-Miyaura and Negishi cross-coupling reactions.

Abstract
A luminescent bimetallic AuI complex comprised of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) and carbazole (Cz) ligands, that is, (NHC')Au(NHC)AuCz has been synthesized and studied. Both carbene ligands in the bimetallic complex act as electron acceptors in tandem to increase the energy separation between the ground and excited state, which is higher than those found in either monometallic analogue, (NHC)AuCz and (NHC')AuCz. A coplanar geometry designed into the tandem complex ensures sufficient electronic coupling between the π-orbitals of the ligands to impart a strong oscillator strength to the singlet intra-ligand charge-transfer (1 ICT) transition. Theoretical modelling indicates that the emissive ICT excited state involves both NHC ligands. The tandem complex gives blue luminescence (λmax =480 nm) with a high photoluminescent quantum yield (ΦPL =0.80) with a short decay lifetime (τ=0.52 μs). Temperature-dependent photophysical studies indicate that emission is via thermally assisted delayed fluorescence (TADF) and give a small singlet-triplet energy difference (ΔEST =50 meV, 400 cm-1 ) consistent with the short TADF lifetime.

Abstract
3,4-Diphenyl isoquinoline and 2,3-diphenyl indole are readily accessed by catalytic selective bis-arylative endo cyclization of gold acetylides. The synthetic approach could be also extended to prepare six-membered mesoionic NHC complex, which could further undergo deprotonation/complexation to afford 1,3-N-heterocyclic dicarbene (NHDCs) Au2 and Au/Ag complexes. The key vicinal diaurated alkene intermediates have been isolated and the studies on their reactivities towards coupling partners reinforce the proposed mechanisms.

Abstract
We have investigated the ligand effect on the gold-activated intramolecular amidiniumation of formamidine having a terminal alkyne, and observed the transformation of vinyl gold species into a gem-digold intermediate comprising two C-Au σ bonds, which represents a new binding mode for gem-digold species in the gold-promoted transformation of alkynes.

Synthesis and structures of gold and copper carbene intermediates in catalytic amination of alkynes. Nat Commun 2017; 8:14625. Abstract
Metal carbenes are often proposed as reactive intermediates in the late transition metal-catalysed transformations of alkynes. Owing to their high reactivity, however, isolation and structural characterization of metal carbene intermediates in these transformations has remained unknown. Herein, we report the isolation of two acyclic gold and copper carbene intermediates in either Au(I)- or Cu(I)-catalysed cyclization of N-alkynyl formamidines through five-exo-dig cyclization. X-ray diffraction, 13C NMR spectra data and computational analyses provide evidence for the formation of a gold carbene intermediate with a carbocation-like electronic character. Using the intrinsic bond orbital (IBO) approach, we also evaluate the π-stabilizing effects of organic substituents at the carbene carbon atom in the gold carbene intermediate. Another rare six-membered copper carbene complex is also obtained through 6-endo-dig cyclization. These metal carbenes have proven reactive toward oxidation. The metal-promoted cyclization of N-alkynyl formamidine provides a facile approach to synthesize metal carbene species. Metal carbenes are typically highly reactive and unstable species, proposed as intermediates in numerous catalytic processes. Here the authors report the isolation and characterization of gold and copper carbene intermediates involved in catalytic cyclization reactions.
