Abstract
B(C6F5)3·H2O has been long recognized as a common Brønsted acid. The lack of X-ray crystal structure of B(C6F5)3·H2O with other substrates has greatly limited the development of a new catalytic mode. In this work, a complex of B(C6F5)3·H2O and amide 2-phenyl-3,4-dihydroisoquinolin-1(2H)-one with hydrogen bonds and π-π interactions is characterized by X-ray diffraction. Such noncovalent interactions in solution also exist, as verified by NMR, UV-Vis absorption, and fluorescence emission measurements. Moreover, the mixture of amide 2-phenyl-3,4-dihydroisoquinolin-1(2H)-one and B(C6F5)3·H2O, instead of other tested Brønsted acids, shows a tailing absorption band in the visible light region (400-450 nm). Based on the photoactive properties of the complex, a photoredox catalysis is developed to construct α-aminoamides under mild conditions.

Abstract
Cyclic boronate esters play important roles in organic synthesis, pharmacology, supramolecular chemistry and materials science owing to their stability in air and versatile reactivity. Most of these compounds contain a B-O-C linkage with an alkoxy- or carboxylate group bound to the boron atom (e.g. boronate-diol esters, MIDA boronates). Boron chelates comprising a B-O-N motif (BON heterocycles) are much less explored, although first representatives of this class were prepared in the early 1960s. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in BON heterocycles as new chemotypes for drug design. The exocyclic B-O-N linkage, which is readily formed under mild conditions, shows surprising hydrolytic and thermal resistance. This allows the formation of BON heterocycles to be used as click-type reactions for the preparation of bioconjugates and functionally modified polymers. We believe that BON heterocycles are promising yet underrated organoboron derivatives. This review summarizes the scattered information about known types of BON heterocycles, including their synthesis, reactivity and structural data. Available applications of BON heterocycles in materials science and medicinal chemistry, along with their prospects, are also discussed. The bibliography contains 289 references.

Abstract
The cyclic five-membered frustrated phosphane/borane Lewis pairs 11 a, b featuring the bulky octaethylhydrindacenyl- (Eind) substituent or its mono-bromo derivative (Br Eind) at phosphorus are monomeric at room temperature. The reactive frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) cleave dihydrogen. The cyclic FLP 11 b (Br Eind) undergoes 1,2-P/B addition to ethylene to give the zwitterionic heteronorbornane derivative 14 b. It reacts similarly with the carbon-carbon double bond of norbornene. With a variety of organic π-reagents, the cyclic FLP 11 b often undergoes reaction sequences reminiscent of the Alder-Rickert reaction: the cycloaddition reaction is followed by rapid cycloreversion to form new five-membered heterocyclic FLP products with extrusion of ethene. Reactions of 11 b with benzaldehyde or with acetylenes follow this reaction pattern.

Abstract
Major advances in the chemistry of 5th and 6th row heavy p-block element compounds have recently uncovered intriguing reactivity patterns towards small molecules such as H2, CO2, and ethylene. However, well-defined, homogeneous insertion reactions with carbon monoxide, one of the benchmark substrates in this field, have not been reported to date. We demonstrate here, that a cationic bismuth amide undergoes facile insertion of CO into the Bi-N bond under mild conditions. This approach grants direct access to the first cationic bismuth carbamoyl species. Its characterization by NMR, IR, and UV/vis spectroscopy, elemental analysis, single-crystal X-ray analysis, cyclic voltammetry, and DFT calculations revealed intriguing properties, such as a reversible electron transfer at the bismuth center and an absorption feature at 353 nm ascribed to a transition involving σ- and π-type orbitals of the bismuth-carbamoyl functionality. A combined experimental and theoretical approach provided insight into the mechanism of CO insertion. The substrate scope could be extended to isonitriles.

Abstract
Recently, the concept of small molecule activation by frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) has been expanded to the solid state showing a variety of interesting reactivities. Therefore, there is a need to establish a computational protocol to investigate such systems theoretically. In the present study, we selected several FLPs and applied multiple levels of theory, ranging from a semi-empirical tight-binding Hamiltonian to dispersion corrected hybrid density functionals. Their performance is benchmarked for the computation of crystal geometries, thermostatistical contributions, and reaction energies. We show that the computationally efficient HF-3c method gives accurate crystal structures and is numerically stable and sufficiently fast for routine applications. This method also gives reliable values for the thermostatistical contributions to Gibbs free energies. The meta-generalized gradient approximated TPSS-D3 evaluated in a projector augmented plane wave basis set is able to produce sufficiently accurate reaction electronic energies. The established protocol is intended to support experimental studies and to predict new reactions in the emerging field of solid-state FLPs.This article is part of the themed issue 'Frustrated Lewis pair chemistry'.

Abstract
The revelation that combinations of Lewis acids and bases for which dative bonding is impeded can activate dihydrogen led to the concept of "frustrated Lewis pairs" (FLPs). Over the past decade, a range of FLP systems and substrate molecules have precipitated a paradigm change in main-group chemistry and metal-free catalysis. The FLP motif has also found application in a growing body of chemical problems in organic synthesis, transition metal and free radical chemistry, materials, enzymatic models, and surface chemistry. The current state of FLP chemistry is assessed herein, and the outlook for the future considered.

Abstract
Treatment of the bulky metallocene hydride Cp*2Zr(H)OMes (Cp* = pentamethylcyclopentadienyl, Mes = mesityl) with Piers' borane [HB(C6F5)2] and carbon monoxide (CO) gave the formylhydridoborate complex [Zr]-O═CH-BH(C6F5)2 ([Zr] = Cp*2Zr-OMes). From the dynamic NMR behavior, its endergonic equilibration with the [Zr]-O-CH2-B(C6F5)2 isomer was deduced, which showed typical reactions of an oxygen/boron frustrated Lewis pair. It was trapped with CO to give an O-[Zr] bonded borata-β-lactone. Trapping with carbon dioxide (CO2) gave the respective O-[Zr] bonded cyclic boratacarbonate product. These reaction pathways were analyzed by density functional theory calculation. The formylhydridoborate complex was further reduced by dihydrogen via two steps; it reacted rapidly with H2 to give Cp*2Zr(OH)OMes and H3C-B(C6F5)2, which then slowly reacted further with H2 to eventually give [Zr]-O(H)-B(H)(C6F5)2 and methane (CH4). Most complexes were characterized by X-ray diffraction.

Abstract
N-Allyltetramethylpiperidine is readily isomerized to the corresponding enamine by treatment with catalytic amounts of B(C6F5)3. It adds HB(C6F5)2 at the nucleophilic enamine carbon atom to form a C/B Lewis adduct. This reacts with two molar equivalents of carbon monoxide by selective head to tail coupling to give a five-membered C2O2B heterocycle. In contrast the enamine/HB(C6F5)2 Lewis pair reacts with two molar equiv. of nitric oxide by head to head coupling. This reaction probably proceeds via equilibrium with the corresponding vicinal N/B Lewis pair. Most products were characterized by X-ray diffraction.

Abstract
The extensive physiological and regulatory roles of nitric oxide (NO) have spurred the development of NO sensors, which are of critical importance in neuroscience and various medical applications. The development of electrochemical NO sensors is of significant importance, and has garnered a tremendous amount of attention due to their high sensitivity and selectivity, rapid response, low cost, miniaturization, and the possibility of real-time monitoring. Nanostructured platinum (Pt)-based materials have attracted considerable interest regarding their use in the design of electrochemical sensors for the detection of NO, due to their unique properties and the potential for new and innovative applications. This review focuses primarily on advances and insights into the utilization of nanostructured Pt-based electrode materials, such as nanoporous Pt, Pt and PtAu nanoparticles, PtAu nanoparticle/reduced graphene oxide (rGO), and PtW nanoparticle/rGO-ionic liquid (IL) nanocomposites, for the detection of NO. The design, fabrication, characterization, and integration of electrochemical NO sensing performance, selectivity, and durability are addressed. The attractive electrochemical properties of Pt-based nanomaterials have great potential for increasing the competitiveness of these new sensors and open up new opportunities in the creation of novel NO-sensing technologies for biological and medical applications.
