Functionalized 2D membranes for separations at the 1-nm scale

The ongoing evolution of two-dimensional (2D) material-based membranes has prompted the realization of mass separations at the 1-nm scale due to their well-defined selective nano- and subnanochannels. Strategic membrane functionalization is further found to be key to augmenting channel accuracy and efficiency in distinguishing ions, gases and molecules within this range and is thus trending as a research focus in energy-, resource-, environment- and pharmaceutical-related applications. In this review, we present the fundamentals underpinning functionalized 2D membranes in various separations, elucidating the critical "method-interaction-property" relationship. Starting with an introduction to various functionalization strategies, we focus our discussion on functionalization-induced channel-species interactions and reveal how they shape the transport- and operation-related features of the membrane in different scenarios. We also highlight the limitations and challenges of current functionalized 2D membranes and outline the necessary breakthroughs needed to apply them as reliable and high-performance separation units across industries in the future.

Microporous Materials in Polymer Electrolytes: The Merit of Order

Solid-state batteries (SSBs) have garnered significant attention in the critical field of sustainable energy storage due to their potential benefits in safety, energy density, and cycle life. The large-scale, cost-effective production of SSBs necessitates the development of high-performance solid-state electrolytes. However, the manufacturing of SSBs relies heavily on the advancement of suitable solid-state electrolytes. Composite polymer electrolytes (CPEs), which combine the advantages of ordered microporous materials (OMMs) and polymer electrolytes, meet the requirements for high ionic conductivity/transference number, stability with respect to electrodes, compatibility with established manufacturing processes, and cost-effectiveness, making them particularly well-suited for mass production of SSBs. This review delineates how structural ordering dictates the fundamental physicochemical properties of OMMs, including ion transport, thermal transfer, and mechanical stability. The applications of prominent OMMs are critically examined, such as metal-organic frameworks, covalent organic frameworks, and zeolites, in CPEs, highlighting how structural ordering facilitates the fulfillment of property requirements. Finally, an outlook on the field is provided, exploring how the properties of CPEs can be enhanced through the dimensional design of OMMs, and the importance of uncovering the underlying "feature-function" mechanisms of various CPE types is underscored.

Congener-welded crystalline carbon nitride membrane for robust and highly selective Li/Mg separation

Extracting lithium from salt-lake brines critically relies on the separation of Li+ and Mg2+, which could combat the lithium shortage. However, designing robust sieving membrane with high Li+/Mg2+ selectivity in the long-time operation has remained highly challenging. Here, we demonstrate a bioinspired congener-welded crystalline carbon nitride membrane that can accomplish efficient and stable monovalent ion sieving over divalent Mg ion. The crystalline carbon nitrides have uniform and narrow pore size to reject the large hydrated Mg2+ and rich ligating sites to facilitate an almost barrierless Li+ transport as suggested by ab initio simulations. These crystals were then welded by vapor-deposited congeners, i.e., amorphous polymer carbon nitride, which have similar composition and chemistry with the crystals, forming intimate and compatible crystal/polymer interface. As a result, our membrane can sieve out highly dilute Li+ (0.002 M) from concentrated Mg2+ (1.0 M) with a high selectivity of 1708, and can be continuously operated for 10 days.

Synergistic Construction of Sub-Nanometer Channel Membranes through MOF-Polymer Composites: Strategies and Nanofiltration Applications

The selective separation of small molecules at the sub-nanometer scale has broad application prospects in the field, such as energy, catalysis, and separation. Conventional polymeric membrane materials (e.g., nanofiltration membranes) for sub-nanometer scale separations face challenges, such as inhomogeneous channel sizes and unstable pore structures. Combining polymers with metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which possess uniform and intrinsic pore structures, may overcome this limitation. This combination has resulted in three distinct types of membranes: MOF polycrystalline membranes, mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs), and thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes. However, their effectiveness is hindered by the limited regulation of the surface properties and growth of MOFs and their poor interfacial compatibility. The main issues in preparing MOF polycrystalline membranes are the uncontrollable growth of MOFs and the poor adhesion between MOFs and the substrate. Here, polymers could serve as a simple and precise tool for regulating the growth and surface functionalities of MOFs while enhancing their adhesion to the substrate. For MOF mixed-matrix membranes, the primary challenge is the poor interfacial compatibility between polymers and MOFs. Strategies for the mutual modification of MOFs and polymers to enhance their interfacial compatibility are introduced. For TFN membranes, the challenges include the difficulty in controlling the growth of the polymer selective layer and the performance limitations caused by the "trade-off" effect. MOFs can modulate the formation process of the polymer selective layer and establish transport channels within the polymer matrix to overcome the "trade-off" effect limitations. This review focuses on the mechanisms of synergistic construction of polymer-MOF membranes and their structure-nanofiltration performance relationships, which have not been sufficiently addressed in the past.

Unlocking Direct Lithium Extraction in Harsh Conditions through Thiol-Functionalized Metal-Organic Framework Subnanofluidic Membranes

Metal-organic framework (MOF) membranes with high ion selectivity are highly desirable for direct lithium-ion (Li+) separation from industrial brines. However, very few MOF membranes can efficiently separate Li+ from brines of high Mg2+/Li+ concentration ratios and keep stable in ultrahigh Mg2+-concentrated brines. This work reports a type of MOF-channel membranes (MOFCMs) by growing UiO-66-(SH)2 into the nanochannels of polymer substrates to improve the efficiency of MOF membranes for challenging Li+ extraction. The resulting membranes demonstrate excellent monovalent metal ion selectivity over divalent metal ions, with Li+/Mg2+ selectivity up to 103 since Mg2+ should overcome a higher energy barrier than Li+ when transported through the MOF pores, as confirmed by molecular dynamics simulations. Under dual-ion diffusion, as the Mg2+/Li+ mole ratio of the feed solution increases from 0.2 to 30, the membrane Li+/Mg2+ selectivity decreases from 1516 to 19, corresponding to the purity of lithium products between 99.9 and 95.0%. Further research on multi-ion diffusion that involves Mg2+ and three monovalent metal ions (K+, Na+, and Li+, referred to as M+) in the feed solutions shows a significant improvement in Li+/Mg2+ separation efficiency. The Li+/Mg2+ selectivity can go up to 1114 when the Mg2+/M+ molar concentration ratio is 1:1, and it remains at 19 when the ratio is 30:1. The membrane selectivity is also stable for 30 days in a highly concentrated solution with a high Mg2+/Li+ concentration ratio. These results indicate the feasibility of the MOFCMs for direct lithium extraction from brines with Mg2+ concentrations up to 3.5 M. This study provides an alternative strategy for designing efficient MOF membranes in extracting valuable minerals in the future.

Crown-Ether Crystal Channel Membranes with Subnanometer Pores for Selective Na+ Transport

Emulating biological sodium ion channels to achieve high selectivity and rapid Na+ transport is important for water desalination, energy conversion, and separation processes. However, the development of artificial ion channels, especially multichannels, to achieve high ion selectivity, remains a challenge. In this work, we demonstrate the fabrication of ion channel membranes utilizing crown-ether crystals (DA18C6-nitrate crystals), which feature extremely consistent subnanometer pores. The polyethylene terephthalate (PET) membranes were initially subjected to amination, followed by the in situ growth of DA18C6-nitrate crystals to establish ordered multichannels aimed at facilitating selective Na+ conductance. These channels allow rapid Na+ transport while inhibiting the migration of other ions (K+ and Ca2+). The Na+ transport rate was 2.15 mol m-2 h-1, resulting in the Na+/K+ and Na+/Ca2+ selectivity ratios of 6.53 and 12.56, respectively. Due to the immobilization of the crown-ether ring, when the size of the transmembrane ion exceeded that of the crown-ether ring's cavity, the ions had to undergo a dehydration process to pass through the channel. This resulted in the ions encountering a higher energy barrier upon entering the channel, making it more difficult for them to permeate. However, the size of Na+ was compatible with the cavity of the crown-ether ring and was able to displace the hydrated layer effectively, facilitating selective Na+ translocation. In summary, this research offers a promising approach for the future development of functionalized ion channels and efficient membrane materials tailored for high-performance Na+ separation.

Commercial Nafion Membranes for Harvesting Osmotic Energy from Proton Gradients that Exceed the Commercial Goal of 5.0 W/m2

Osmotic energy from proton gradients in industrial acidic wastewater can be harvested and converted to electricity through membranes, making it a renewable and sustainable power source. However, the currently designed membranes for harvesting proton gradient energy in acidic wastewater cannot simultaneously achieve excellent chemical/mechanical stability and high power density under a large-scale area and require high cost and complex operations. Here, we demonstrate that commercial Nafion membranes with high chemical/mechanical stability and proton transport selectivity can generate a power density of 5.1 W/m2 for harvesting osmotic energy from proton gradients under a test area of 0.2 mm2, which exceeds the commercial goal of 5.0 W/m2. Even under a test area of 12.5 mm2, a power density of 2.1 W/m2 can be achieved under a strong acid condition. In addition, the heat can greatly promote proton transport, and the power density is increased, i.e., 8.1 W/m2 at 333 K (5.1 W/m2 at 293 K) under a test area of 0.2 mm2. By matching membranes with ion selectivity, our work demonstrates the potential of Nafion membranes for harvesting proton gradient energy in acidic wastewater and provides an approach for large-scale conversion of osmotic energy.

Reversible pH-Gated MXene Membranes with Ultrahigh Mono-/Divalent-Ion Selectivity

Artificial ion channel membranes hold high promise in water treatment, nanofluidics, and energy conversion, but it remains a great challenge to construct such smart membranes with both reversible ion-gating capability and desirable ion selectivity. Herein, we constructed a smart MXene-based membrane via p-phenylenediamine functionalization (MLM-PPD) with highly stable and aligned two-dimensional subnanochannels, which exhibits reversible ion-gating capability and ultrahigh metal ion selectivity similar to biological ion channels. The pH-sensitive groups within the MLM-PPD channel confers excellent reversible Mg2+-gating capability with a pH-switching ratio of up to 100. The mono/divalent metal-ion selectivity up to 1243.8 and 400.9 for K+/Mg2+ and Li+/Mg2+, respectively, outperforms other reported membranes. Theoretical calculations combined with experimental results reveal that the steric hindrance and stronger PPD-ion interactions substantially enhance the energy barrier for divalent metal ions passing through the MLM-PPD, and thus leading to ultrahigh mono/divalent metal-ion selectivity. This work provides a new strategy for developing artificial-ion channel membranes with both reversible ion-gating functionality and high-ion selectivity for various applications.

Bio-Inspired Subnanofluidics: Advanced Fabrication and Functionalization

Biological ion channels can realize high-speed and high-selective ion transport through the protein filter with the sub-1-nanometer channel. Inspired by biological ion channels, various kinds of artificial subnanopores, subnanochannels, and subnanoslits with improved ion selectivity and permeability are recently developed for efficient separation, energy conversion, and biosensing. This review article discusses the advanced fabrication and functionalization methods for constructing subnanofluidic pores, channels, tubes, and slits, which have shown great potential for various applications. Novel fabrication methods for producing subnanofluidics, including top-down techniques such as electron beam etching, ion irradiation, and electrochemical etching, as well as bottom-up approaches starting from advanced microporous frameworks, microporous polymers, lipid bilayer embedded subnanochannels, and stacked 2D materials are well summarized. Meanwhile, the functionalization methods of subnanochannels are discussed based on the introduction of functional groups, which are classified into direct synthesis, covalent bond modifications, and functional molecule fillings. These methods have enabled the construction of subnanochannels with precise control of structure, size, and functionality. The current progress, challenges, and future directions in the field of subnanofluidic are also discussed.

Regulating ion affinity and dehydration of metal-organic framework sub-nanochannels for high-precision ion separation

Membrane consisting of ordered sub-nanochannels has been pursued in ion separation technology to achieve applications including desalination, environment management, and energy conversion. However, high-precision ion separation has not yet been achieved owing to the lack of deep understanding of ion transport mechanism in confined environments. Biological ion channels can conduct ions with ultrahigh permeability and selectivity, which is inseparable from the important role of channel size and "ion-channel" interaction. Here, inspired by the biological systems, we report the high-precision separation of monovalent and divalent cations in functionalized metal-organic framework (MOF) membranes (UiO-66-(X)2, X = NH2, SH, OH and OCH3). We find that the functional group (X) and size of the MOF sub-nanochannel synergistically regulate the ion binding affinity and dehydration process, which is the key in enlarging the transport activation energy difference between target and interference ions to improve the separation performance. The K+/Mg2+ selectivity of the UiO-66-(OCH3)2 membrane reaches as high as 1567.8. This work provides a gateway to the understanding of ion transport mechanism and development of high-precision ion separation membranes.

Two-Dimensional Sulfonate-Functionalized Metal-Organic Framework Membranes for Efficient Lithium-Ion Sieving

Two-dimensional (2D) membranes have shown promising potential for ion-selective separation but often suffer from the trade-off between permeability and selectivity. Herein, we report an ultrathin 2D sulfonate-functionalized metal-organic framework (MOF) membrane for efficient lithium-ion sieving. The narrow pores with angstrom precision in the MOF assist hydrated ions to partially remove the hydration shell, according to different hydration energies. The abundant sulfonate groups in the MOF channels serve as hopping sites for fast lithium-ion transport, contributing to a high Li-ion permeability. Then, the difference in affinity of the Li+, Na+, K+, and Mg2+ ions to the terminal sulfonate groups further enhances the Li-ion selectivity. The reported ultrathin MOF membrane overcomes the trade-off between permeability and selectivity and opens up a new avenue for highly permselective membranes.

Fabrication of Oriented MOF-Based Mixed Matrix Membrane via Ion-Induced Synchronous Synthesis

Developing a facile strategy for constructing oriented mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) with uniformly dispersed and high-loading metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is a crucial scientific challenge in probing the enhanced capability and potential applications of MOF-polymer MMMs. Herein, a novel synchronous synthetic method for constructing oriented CuBDC/poly(m-phenylenediamine) (CuBDC/PmPD) MMM with uniform MOF dispersion at high loading at the air-solution interface via the dual function of metal ions is reported. The resulting MMM exhibits excellent separation performance in ion sieving and seawater desalination due to the structural integrity of the proposed membrane and the highly interconnected channels created through the oriented distribution of MOF in a polymer matrix. Such a cutting-edge approach may provide promising insights into the development of advanced MMMs with optimized structure and superior performances.

Highly Selective Lithium Transport through Crown Ether Pillared Angstrom Channels

Biological ion channels use the synergistic effects of various strategies to realize highly selective ion sieving. For example, potassium channels use functional groups and angstrom-sized pores to discriminate rival ions and enrich target ions. Inspired by this, we constructed a layered crystal pillared by crown ether that incorporates these strategies to realize high Li+ selectivity. The pillared channels and crown ether have an angstrom-scale size. The crown ether specifically allows the low-barrier transport of Li+ . The channels attract and enrich Li+ ions by up to orders of magnitude. As a result, our material sieves Li+ out of various common ions such as Na+ , K+ , Ca2+ , Mg2+ and Al3+ . Moreover, by spontaneously enriching Li+ ions, it realizes an effective Li+ /Na+ selectivity of 1422 in artificial seawater where the Li+ concentration is merely 25 μM. We expect this work to spark technologies for the extraction of lithium and other dilute metal ions.

Confined Water Dominates Ion/Molecule Transport in Hydrogel Nanochannels

Current artificial nanochannels rely more on charge interactions for intelligent mass transport. Nevertheless, popular charged nanochannels would lose their advantages in long-term applications. Confined water, an indispensable transport medium in biological nanochannels, dominating the transport process in the uncharged nanochannels perfectly provides a new perspective. Herein, we achieve confined-water-dominated mass transport in hydrogel nanochannels (HNCs) constructed by in situ photopolymerization of acrylic acid (PAA) hydrogel in anodic alumina (AAO) nanochannels. HNCs show selectivity to Na+ transport and a high transport rate of molecules after introducing Na+/Li+, compared with other alkali metal ions like Cs+/K+. The mechanism given by ATR-FTIR shows that the hydrogen-bonding structure of confined water in HNCs is destabilized by Na+/Li+, which facilitates mass transport, but is constrained by Cs+/K+, resulting in transport inhibition. This work elucidates the relationship between confined water and mass transport in uncharged nanochannels while also presenting a strategy for designing functional nanochannel devices.

Self-assembled dendrimer polyamide nanofilms with enhanced effective pore area for ion separation

Membrane technology using well-defined pore structure can achieve high ion purity and recovery. However, fine-tuning the inner pore structure of the separation nanofilm to be uniform and enhance the effective pore area is still challenging. Here, we report dendrimers with different peripheral groups that preferentially self-assemble in aqueous-phase amine solution to facilitate the formation of polyamide nanofilms with a well-defined effective pore range and uniform pore structure. The high permeabilities are maintained by forming asymmetric hollow nanostripe nanofilms, and their well-designed ion effective separation pore ranges show an enhancement, rationalized by molecular simulation. The self-assembled dendrimer polyamide membrane provides Cl-/SO42- selectivity more than 17 times that of its pristine polyamide counterparts, increasing from 167.9 to 2883.0. Furthermore, the designed membranes achieve higher Li purity and Li recovery compared to current state-of-the-art membranes. Such an approach provides a scalable strategy to fine-tune subnanometre structures in ion separation nanofilms.

Modular Gating of Ion Transport by Postsynthetic Charge Transfer Complexation in a Metal-Organic Framework

Nature's design of biological ion channels that demonstrates efficient gating and selectivity brings to light a very promising model to mimic and design for achieving selective and tunable ion transport. Functionalized nanopores that permit modulation of the pore wall charges are a compelling approach to gain control over the ion transport mechanism through the pores. This makes way for employing a noncovalent supramolecular approach for attaining charge reversal of the MOF pore walls using donor-acceptor pairs that can demonstrate strong charge transfer interactions. Herein, robust Zr4+-based mesoporous MOF-808 was postsynthetically modified into an anion-selective nanochannel (MOF-808-MV) by modification with dicationic viologen-based motifs. Charge modulation and even reversal of the MOF-808-MV pore walls were then explored taking advantage of strong charge transfer interactions between the grafted dicationic viologen acceptor moieties and anionic, π-electron-rich donor guest molecules such as pyranine (PYR) and tetrathiafulvalene tetrabenzoic acid (TTF-TA). Tunability of the MOF pore charge from positive to neutral to negative was achieved via simple methodologies such as diffusion control in case of guest molecule like PYR and by pH modulation for pH-responsive guest like TTF-TA. This results in a concomitant modulation in the selectivity of the nanochannel, rendering it from anion-selective to ambipolar to cation-selective. Furthermore, as a real-time application of this ion channel, Na+ ion conductivity (σ = 3.5 × 10-5 S cm-1) was studied at ambient temperature.

Advanced Lithium Extraction Membranes Derived from Tagged-Modification of Polyamide Networks

Efficient Mg2+ /Li+ separation is crucial to combating the lithium shortage worldwide, yet current nanofiltration membranes suffer from low efficacy and/or poor scalability, because desirable properties of membranes are entangled and there is a trade-off. This work reports a "tagged-modification" approach to tackle the challenge. A mixture of 3-bromo-trimethylpropan-1-aminium bromide (E1 ) and 3-aminopropyltrimethylazanium (E2 ) was designed to modify polyethylenimine - trimesoyl chloride (PEI-TMC) membranes. E1 and E2 reacted with the PEI and TMC, respectively, and thus, the membrane properties (hydrophilicity, pore sizes, charge) were untangled and intensified simultaneously. The permeance (34.3 L m-2  h-1  bar-1 ) and Mg2+ /Li+ selectivity (23.2) of the modified membranes are about 4 times and 2 times higher than the pristine membrane, and they remain stable in a 30-days test. The permeance is the highest among all analogous nanofiltration membranes. The tagged-modification method enables the preparation of large-area membranes and modules that produce high-purity lithium carbonate (Li2 CO3 ) from simulated brine.

Ternary Heterostructure Membranes with Two-Dimensional Tunable Channels for Highly Selective Ion Separation

Selective ion separation from brines is pivotal for attaining high-purity lithium, a critical nonrenewable resource. Conventional methods encounter substantial challenges, driving the quest for streamlined, efficient, and swift approaches. Here, we present a graphene oxide (GO)-based ternary heterostructure membrane with a unique design. By utilizing Zn2+-induced confinement synthesis in a two-dimensional (2D) space, we incorporated two-dimensional zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) and zinc alginate (ZA) polymers precisely within layers of the GO membrane, creating tunable interlayer channels with a ternary heterostructure. The pivotal design lies in ion insertion into the two-dimensional (2D) membrane layers, achieving meticulous modulation of layer spacing based on ion hydration radius. Notably, the ensuing layer spacing within the hybrid ionic intercalation membrane occupies an intermediary realm, positioned astutely between small-sized hydrated ionic intercalation membrane spacing and their more extensive counterparts. This deliberate configuration accelerates the swift passage of diminutive hydrated ions while simultaneously impeding the movement of bulkier ions within the brine medium. The outcome is remarkable selectivity, demonstrated by the partitioning of K+/Li+ = 20.9, Na+/K+ = 31.2, and Li+/Mg2+ = 9.5 ion pairs. The ZIF-8/GO heterostructure significantly contributes to the selectivity, while the mechanical robustness and stability, improved by the ZA/GO heterostructure, further support its practical applicability. This report reports an advanced membrane design, offering promising prospects for lithium extraction and various ion separation processes.

Ionization Engineering of Hydrogels Enables Highly Efficient Salt-Impeded Solar Evaporation and Night-Time Electricity Harvesting

Interfacial solar evaporation holds immense potential for brine desalination with low carbon footprints and high energy utilization. Hydrogels, as a tunable material platform from the molecular level to the macroscopic scale, have been considered the most promising candidate for solar evaporation. However, the simultaneous achievement of high evaporation efficiency and satisfactory tolerance to salt ions in brine remains a challenging scientific bottleneck, restricting the widespread application. Herein, we report ionization engineering, which endows polymer chains of hydrogels with electronegativity for impeding salt ions and activating water molecules, fundamentally overcoming the hydrogel salt-impeded challenge and dramatically expediting water evaporating in brine. The sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate-modified carbon black is chosen as the solar absorbers. The hydrogel reaches a ground-breaking evaporation rate of 2.9 kg m-2 h-1 in 20 wt% brine with 95.6% efficiency under one sun irradiation, surpassing most of the reported literature. More notably, such a hydrogel-based evaporator enables extracting clean water from oversaturated salt solutions and maintains durability under different high-strength deformation or a 15-day continuous operation. Meantime, on the basis of the cation selectivity induced by the electronegativity, we first propose an all-day system that evaporates during the day and generates salinity-gradient electricity using waste-evaporated brine at night, anticipating pioneer a new opportunity for all-day resource-generating systems in fields of freshwater and electricity.

Photoelectric responsive ionic channel for sustainable energy harvesting

Access to sustainable energy is paramount in today's world, with a significant emphasis on solar and water-based energy sources. Herein, we develop photo-responsive ionic dye-sensitized covalent organic framework membranes. These innovative membranes are designed to significantly enhance selective ion transport by exploiting the intricate interplay between photons, electrons, and ions. The nanofluidic devices engineered in our study showcase exceptional cation conductivity. Additionally, they can adeptly convert light into electrical signals due to photoexcitation-triggered ion movement. Combining the effects of salinity gradients with photo-induced ion movement, the efficiency of these devices is notably amplified. Specifically, under a salinity differential of 0.5/0.01 M NaCl and light exposure, the device reaches a peak power density of 129 W m-2, outperforming the current market standard by approximately 26-fold. Beyond introducing the idea of photoelectric activity in ionic membranes, our research highlights a potential pathway to cater to the escalating global energy needs.

Two-Dimensional Sodium Channels with High Selectivity and Conductivity for Osmotic Power Generation from Wastewater

Conducting target ions rapidly while rejecting rival ions efficiently is challenging yet highly demanded for ion separation related applications. Two-dimensional (2D) channels are widely used for ion separation, but highly selective 2D channels generally suffer from a relatively low ionic conductivity. Here we report that the 2D vermiculite channels have a Na+ conductivity higher than bulk and at the same time reject heavy metal ions with a selectivity of a few hundreds. Such performance is attributed to the highly electronegative crystal surface and the extremely narrow channel (0.2 nm high), as also supported by the ab initio molecular dynamics simulation. We demonstrate that the highly selective and conductive sodium channels can be utilized to harvest osmotic power from industrial wastewater, achieving a power density of more than 20 W m-2 while preventing pollution from waste heavy metal ions. This work provides a strategy for wastewater utilization as well as treatment. Moreover, the investigation suggests the possibility to break the ionic permeability-selectivity trade-off by combining Ångstrom-scale confinement with proper surface engineering, which could lead to applications that are challenging for previous materials.

Industrial Separation Challenges: How Does Supramolecular Chemistry Help?

The chemical industry and the chemical processes underscoring it are under intense scrutiny as the demands for the transition to more sustainable and environmentally friendly practices are increasing. Traditional industrial separation systems, such as thermally driven distillation for hydrocarbon purification, are energy intensive. The development of more energy efficient separation technologies is thus emerging as a critical need, as is the creation of new materials that may permit a transition away from classic distillation-based separations. In this Perspective, we focus on porous organic cages and macrocycles that can adsorb guest molecules selectively through various host-guest interactions and permit molecular sieving behavior at the molecular level. Specifically, we summarize the recent advances where receptor-based adsorbent materials have been shown to be effective for industrially relevant hydrocarbon separations, highlighting the underlying host-guest interactions that impart selectivity and permit the observed separations. This approach to sustainable separations is currently in its infancy. Nevertheless, several receptor-based adsorbent materials with extrinsic/intrinsic voids or special functional groups have been reported in recent years that can selectively capture various targeted guest molecules. We believe that the understanding of the interactions that drive selectivity at a molecular level accruing from these initial systems will permit an ever-more-effective "bottom-up" design of tailored molecular sieves that, in due course, will allow adsorbent material-based approaches to separations to transition from the laboratory into an industrial setting.

Material Design Strategies for Recovery of Critical Resources from Water

Population growth, urbanization, and decarbonization efforts are collectively straining the supply of limited resources that are necessary to produce batteries, electronics, chemicals, fertilizers, and other important products. Securing the supply chains of these critical resources via the development of separation technologies for their recovery represents a major global challenge to ensure stability and security. Surface water, groundwater, and wastewater are emerging as potential new sources to bolster these supply chains. Recently, a variety of material-based technologies have been developed and employed for separations and resource recovery in water. Judicious selection and design of these materials to tune their properties for targeting specific solutes is central to realizing the potential of water as a source for critical resources. Here, the materials that are developed for membranes, sorbents, catalysts, electrodes, and interfacial solar steam generators that demonstrate promise for applications in critical resource recovery are reviewed. In addition, a critical perspective is offered on the grand challenges and key research directions that need to be addressed to improve their practical viability.

Two-dimensional MXene membranes with biomimetic sub-nanochannels for enhanced cation sieving

Membranes with high ion permeability and selectivity are of considerable interest for sustainable water treatment, resource extraction and energy storage. Herein, inspired by K+ channel of streptomyces A (KcsA K+), we have constructed cation sieving membranes using MXene nanosheets and Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) molecules as building blocks. Numerous negatively charged oxygen atoms of EDTA molecules and 6.0 Å two-dimensional (2D) sub-nanochannel of MXene nanosheets enable biomimetic channel size, chemical groups and tunable charge density for the resulting membranes. The membranes show the capability to recognize monovalent/divalent cations, achieving excellent K+/Mg2+ selectivity of 121.2 using mixed salt solution as the feed, which outperforms other reported membranes under similar testing conditions and transcends the current upper limit. Characterization and simulations indicate that the cation recognition effect of EDTA and partial dehydration effects play critical roles in cations selective sieving and increasing the local charge density within the sub-nanochannel significantly improves cation selectivity. Our findings provide a theoretical basis for ions transport in sub-nanochannels and an alternative strategy for design ions separation membranes.

Recent Progress of Crystalline Porous Frameworks for Intermediate-Temperature Proton Conduction

Proton exchange membranes (PEMs), especially for work under intermediate temperatures (100-200 °C), have attracted great interest because of the high CO toleration and facial water management of the corresponding proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Traditional polymer PEMs faced challenges of low stability and proton carrier leaking. Crystalline porous materials, such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs), are promising to overcome these issues contributed by nanometer-sized channels. Herein we summarized the recent development of MOF/COF-based intermediate-temperature proton conductors. The strategies of framework engineering and pore impregnation were introduced in detail for raising proton conductivity. The proton-conducting mechanism was described as well. This spotlight will provide new insight into the fabrication of MOF/COF proton conductors under intermediate-temperature and anhydrous conditions.

Engineer Nanoscale Defects into Selective Channels: MOF-Enhanced Li+ Separation by Porous Layered Double Hydroxide Membrane

Two-dimensional (2D) membrane-based ion separation technology has been increasingly explored to address the problem of lithium resource shortage, yet it remains a sound challenge to design 2D membranes of high selectivity and permeability for ion separation applications. Zeolitic imidazolate framework functionalized modified layered double hydroxide (ZIF-8@MLDH) composite membranes with high lithium-ion (Li+) permeability and excellent operational stability were obtained in this work by in situ depositing functional ZIF-8 nanoparticles into the nanopores acting as framework defects in MLDH membranes. The defect-rich framework amplified the permeability of Li+, and the site-selective growth of ZIF-8 in the framework defects bettered its selectivity. Specifically speaking, the ZIF-8@MLDH membranes featured a high permeation rate of Li+ up to 1.73 mol m-2 h-1 and a desirable selectivity of Li+/Mg2+ up to 31.9. Simulations supported that the simultaneously enhanced selectivity and permeability of Li+ are attributed to changes in the type of mass transfer channels and the difference in the dehydration capacity of hydrated metal cations when they pass through nanochannels of ZIF-8. This study will inspire the ongoing research of high-performance 2D membranes through the engineering of defects.

Fundamental Perspectives on the Electrochemical Water Applications of Metal-Organic Frameworks

HIGHLIGHTS

The recent development and implementation of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and MOF-based materials in electrochemical water applications are reviewed. The critical factors that affect the performances of MOFs in the electrochemical reactions, sensing, and separations are highlighted. Advanced tools, such as pair distribution function analysis, are playing critical roles in unraveling the functioning mechanisms, including local structures and nanoconfined interactions. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a family of highly porous materials possessing huge surface areas and feasible chemical tunability, are emerging as critical functional materials to solve the growing challenges associated with energy-water systems, such as water scarcity issues. In this contribution, the roles of MOFs are highlighted in electrochemical-based water applications (i.e., reactions, sensing, and separations), where MOF-based functional materials exhibit outstanding performances in detecting/removing pollutants, recovering resources, and harvesting energies from different water sources. Compared with the pristine MOFs, the efficiency and/or selectivity can be further enhanced via rational structural modulation of MOFs (e.g., partial metal substitution) or integration of MOFs with other functional materials (e.g., metal clusters and reduced graphene oxide). Several key factors/properties that affect the performances of MOF-based materials are also reviewed, including electronic structures, nanoconfined effects, stability, conductivity, and atomic structures. The advancement in the fundamental understanding of these key factors is expected to shed light on the functioning mechanisms of MOFs (e.g., charge transfer pathways and guest-host interactions), which will subsequently accelerate the integration of precisely designed MOFs into electrochemical architectures to achieve highly effective water remediation with optimized selectivity and long-term stability.

Preparation and Lithium-Ion Separation Property of ZIF-8 Membrane with Excellent Flexibility

Metal-organic framework (MOF) membranes exhibit immense potential for separation applications due to their regular pore channels and scalable pore sizes. However, structuring a flexible and high-quality MOF membrane remains a challenge due to its brittleness, which severely restricts its practical application. This paper presents a simple and effective method in which continuous, uniform, defect-free ZIF-8 film layers of tunable thickness are constructed on the surface of inert microporous polypropylene membranes (MPPM). To provide heterogeneous nucleation sites for ZIF-8 growth, an extensive amount of hydroxyl and amine groups were introduced on the MPPM surface using the dopamine-assisted co-deposition technique. Subsequently, ZIF-8 crystals were grown in-situ on the MPPM surface using the solvothermal method. The resultant ZIF-8/MPPM exhibited a lithium-ion permeation flux of 0.151 mol m^-2 h^-1 and a high selectivity of Li⁺/Na⁺ = 1.93, Li⁺/Mg²⁺ = 11.50. Notably, ZIF-8/MPPM has good flexibility, and the lithium-ion permeation flux and selectivity remain unchanged at a bending curvature of 348 m^-1. These excellent mechanical characteristics are crucial for the practical applications of MOF membranes.

MoS2 Passivated Multilayer Graphene Membranes for Li-Ion Extraction From Seawater

Abundant Li resources in the ocean are promising alternatives to refining ore, whose supplies are limited by the total amount and geopolitical imbalance of reserves in Earth's crust. Despite advances in Li⁺ extraction using porous membranes, they require screening other cations on a large scale due to the lack in precise control of pore size and inborn defects. Herein, MoS₂ nanoflakes on a multilayer graphene membrane (MFs-on-MGM) that possess ion channels comprising i) van der Waals interlayer gaps for optimal Li⁺ extraction and ii) negatively charged vertical inlets for cation attraction, are reported. Ion transport measurements across the membrane reveal ≈6- and 13-fold higher selectivity for Li⁺ compared to Na⁺ and Mg²⁺ , respectively. Furthermore, continuous, stable Li⁺ extraction from seawater is demonstrated by integrating the membrane into a H₂ and Cl₂ evolution system, enabling more than 10⁴ -fold decrease in the Na⁺ concentration and near-complete elimination of other cations.

Engineering Metal-Organic-Framework (MOF)-Based Membranes for Gas and Liquid Separation

Separation is one of the most energy-intensive processes in the chemical industry, and membrane-based separation technology contributes significantly to energy conservation and emission reduction. Additionally, metal-organic framework (MOF) materials have been widely investigated and have been found to have enormous potential in membrane separation due to their uniform pore size and high designability. Notably, pure MOF films and MOF mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) are the core of the "next generation" MOF materials. However, there are some tough issues with MOF-based membranes that affect separation performance. For pure MOF membranes, problems such as framework flexibility, defects, and grain orientation need to be addressed. Meanwhile, there still exist bottlenecks for MMMs such as MOF aggregation, plasticization and aging of the polymer matrix, poor interface compatibility, etc. Herein, corresponding methods are introduced to solve these problems, including inhibiting framework flexibility, regulating synthesis conditions, and enhancing the interaction between MOF and substrate. A series of high-quality MOF-based membranes have been obtained based on these techniques. Overall, these membranes revealed desired separation performance in both gas separation (e.g., CO₂, H₂, and olefin/paraffin) and liquid separation (e.g., water purification, organic solvent nanofiltration, and chiral separation).

Ion-Selective Assembly of Supertetrahedral Selenido Germanate Clusters for Alkali Metal Ion Capture and Separation

Supertetrahedral chalcogenido (semi)metalate cluster-based frameworks possess high selectivity for alkali metal cations, matching the specific charge density of their inner surfaces, which enables their use as ion-exchange materials. Aggregates of the supertetrahedral chalcogenido metalate cluster offer even new perspectives for metal ion capture and separation. Herein, we report on ionothermal preparation of two corresponding model compounds, (C₂C₁Im)₇[Cs@Ge^II₄(Ge^IV₄Se₁₀)₄] (1) and (C₂C₁Im)₁₀[Na₅(CN)₆@Cu₆(Ge₄Se₁₀)₄(Cu)] (2). Their formation is reliant on one specific cation type each, Cs⁺ for 1 and Na⁺ for 2, thus providing promising separation potential during crystallization. Compound 1 is based on the largest discrete binary selenido germanate cluster reported to date and the first mixed-valent chalcogenido germanate(II/IV) supertetrahedron. Moreover, it adds to the few examples of chalcogenides capable of capturing Cs⁺ ions. Its high selectivity for Cs⁺ compared to that of Li⁺, Na⁺, K⁺, and Rb⁺ was confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. Quantum chemical studies indicate that smaller ions, K⁺ and Rb⁺, could also be embedded in an isolated cluster assembly, but as the cluster aggregate slightly distorts for crystallization, the selectivity for Cs⁺ becomes exclusive in the salt. The anionic substructure of compound 2 is based on a two-dimensional network of supramolecular assemblies and exhibits an exclusive preference for Na⁺. This work thus provides the first comprehensive insight into the selective incorporation of specific alkali metal ions into supramolecular aggregates of supertetrahedral chalcogenide clusters, as a promising basis for new ion trapping techniques─especially for heavy alkali metal ions that pose environmental challenges.

Selective Ion Transport in Two-Dimensional Lamellar Nanochannel Membranes

Precise and ultrafast ion sieving is highly desirable for many applications in environment-, energy-, and resource-related fields. The development of a permselective lamellar membrane constructed from parallel stacked two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets opened a new avenue for the development of next-generation separation technology because of the unprecedented diversity of the designable interior nanochannels. In this Review, we first discuss the construction of homo- and heterolaminar nanoarchitectures from the starting materials to the emerging preparation strategies. We then explore the property-performance relationships, with a particular emphasis on the effects of physical structural features, chemical properties, and external environment stimuli on ion transport behavior under nanoconfinement. We also present existing and potential applications of 2D membranes in desalination, ion recovery, and energy conversion. Finally, we discuss the challenges and outline research directions in this promising field.

An artificial sodium-selective subnanochannel

Single-ion selectivity with high precision has long been pursued for fundamental bioinspired engineering and applications such as in ion separation and energy conversion. However, it remains a challenge to develop artificial ion channels to achieve single-ion selectivity comparable to their biological analogs, especially for high Na⁺/K⁺ selectivity. Here, we report an artificial sodium channel by subnanoconfinement of 4'-aminobenzo-15-crown-5 ethers (15C5s) into ~6-Å-sized metal-organic framework subnanochannel (MOFSNC). The resulting 15C5-MOFSNC shows an unprecedented Na⁺/K⁺ selectivity of tens to 10² and Na⁺/Li⁺ selectivity of 10³ under multicomponent permeation conditions, comparable to biological sodium channels. A co-ion-responsive single-file transport mechanism in 15C-MOFSNC is proposed for the preferential transport of Na⁺ over K⁺ due to the synergetic effects of size exclusion, charge selectivity, local hydrophobicity, and preferential binding with functional groups. This study provides an alternative strategy for developing potential single-ion selective channels and membranes for many applications.

Switchable Na+ and K+ selectivity in an amino acid functionalized 2D covalent organic framework membrane

Biological cell membranes can efficiently switch Na⁺/K⁺ selectivity in response to external stimuli, but achieving analogous functions in a single artificial membrane is challenging. Here, we report highly crystalline covalent organic framework (COF) membranes with well-defined nanochannels and coordinative sites (i. e., amino acid) that act as ion-selective switches to manipulate Na⁺ and K⁺ transport. The ion selectivity of the COF membrane is dynamic and can be switched between K⁺-selective and Na⁺-selective in a single membrane by applying a pH stimulus. The experimental results combined with molecular dynamics simulations reveal that the switchable Na⁺/K⁺ selectivity originates from the differentiated coordination interactions between ions and amino acids. Benefiting from the switchable Na⁺/K⁺ selectivity, we further demonstrate the membrane potential switches by varying electrolyte pH, miming the membrane polarity reversal during neural signal transduction in vivo, suggesting the great potential of these membranes for in vitro biomimetic applications.

Engineering Polymeric Nanofluidic Membranes for Efficient Ionic Transport: Biomimetic Design, Material Construction, and Advanced Functionalities

Design elements extracted from biological ion channels guide the engineering of artificial nanofluidic membranes for efficient ionic transport and spawn biomimetic devices with great potential in many cutting-edge areas. In this context, polymeric nanofluidic membranes can be especially attractive because of their inherent flexibility and benign processability, which facilitate massive fabrication and facile device integration for large-scale applications. Herein, the state-of-the-art achievements of polymeric nanofluidic membranes are systematically summarized. Theoretical fundamentals underlying both biological and synthetic ion channels are introduced. The advances of engineering polymeric nanofluidic membranes are then detailed from aspects of structural design, material construction, and chemical functionalization, emphasizing their broad chemical and reticular/topological variety as well as considerable property tunability. After that, this Review expands on examples of evolving these polymeric membranes into macroscopic devices and their potentials in addressing compelling issues in energy conversion and storage systems where efficient ion transport is highly desirable. Finally, a brief outlook on possible future developments in this field is provided.

Covalent organic framework membranes for efficient separation of monovalent cations

Covalent organic frameworks (COF), with rigid, highly ordered and tunable structures, can actively manipulate the synergy of entropic selectivity and enthalpic selectivity, holding great potential as next-generation membrane materials for ion separations. Here, we demonstrated the efficient separation of monovalent cations by COF membrane. The channels of COF membrane are decorated with three different kinds of acid groups. A concept of confined cascade separation was proposed to elucidate the separation process. The channels of COF membrane comprised two kinds of domains, acid-domains and acid-free-domains. The acid-domains serve as confined stages, rendering high selectivity, while the acid-free-domains preserve the pristine channel size, rendering high permeation flux. A set of descriptors of stage properties were designed to elucidate their effect on selective ion transport behavior. The resulting COF membrane acquired high ion separation performances, with an actual selectivity of 4.2–4.7 for K+/Li+ binary mixtures and an ideal selectivity of ~13.7 for K+/Li+.

Photo-controllable Ion-Gated Metal-Organic Framework MIL-53 Sub-nanochannels for Efficient Osmotic Energy Generation

By closing and opening ion channels, electric eels are able to convert ion concentration gradients into electricity. Inspired by electric eels, considerable artificial sub-nanoscale ion channels with high ion selectivity and transportation efficiency have been designed for harvesting the osmotic energy between ionic solutions of different salinities, but constructing smart ion-gated sub-nanochannels for effective ion transport is still a huge challenge. Herein, photo-controllable sub-nanochannels of metal-organic framework (MOF) NH₂-MIL-53 encapsulated with spiropyrans (SP-MIL-53) were fabricated by a facile in situ growth strategy. Interestingly, the highly ordered sub-nanochannels of SP-MIL-53 were switched on and off to efficiently regulate the ion flux by the light-driven isomerization of SP, which made it a smart ionic gate with a high on-off ratio of 16.2 in 10 mM KCl aqueous solution via UV irradiation. Moreover, the ion-gated sub-nanochannel membrane yielded a high power density of 8.3 W m^-2 under a 50-fold KCl concentration gradient in the open state. Density functional theory calculations revealed that K⁺ ions in SP-MIL-53 sub-nanochannels had a higher mobility constant (3.61 × 10^-2) with UV irradiation than without UV illumination (2.33 × 10^-22). This work provides an effective way to develop smart ion-gating sub-nanochannels for capturing salinity gradient power.
