Abstract
Efficient and feasible removal of trace antibiotics from wastewater is extremely important due to its environmental persistence, bioaccumulation, and toxicity, but still remains a huge challenge. Herein, three natural phenol-inspired porous organic polymers were fabricated from natural phenolic-derived monomers (p-hydroxy benzaldehyde, 2,4-dihydroxy benzaldehyde and 2,4,6-trihydroxy benzaldehyde) and melamine via polycondensation reaction. Characterization highlighted that the increasing contents of hydroxyl groups in monomers induced an increase of the polymer total porosity and promoted the formation of a highly microporous structure. With mesopore-dominated pore (average pore diameter 9.6 nm) and large pore volume (1.78 cm3/g), p-hydroxy benzaldehyde-based porous polymer (1-HBPP) exhibited ultra-high maximum adsorption capacity (qmax) of 697.6 mg/g for tetracycline (TC) antibiotic. Meanwhile, the porous networks and plentiful active sites of 1-HBPP enabled fast adsorption kinetics (within 10 min) for TC removal, which could be well described by the pseudo-second-order model. Dynamic adsorption studies showed that 1-HBPP could be used in fixed-bed adsorption column (FBAC) with high removal efficiency (breakthrough volume per unit mass, 13.2 L/g) and dynamic adsorption capacity (201.6 mg/g), which were much higher than other reported adsorbents. The breakthrough curves both well matched with Thomas and Yoon-Nelson models in FBAC treatment. Moreover, removal mechanism analysis affirmed that pore-filling, hydrogen bonding, electrostatic interactions and π-π stacking interactions were main driving forces for TC adsorption. The prepared natural phenol-inspired porous adsorbents show great potential in antibiotics removal from wastewater, and this strategy would promote the sustainable and high-value utilization of natural phenolic compounds.

Abstract
A three-component, solvent-dependent, Brønsted-acid-catalyzed reaction of benzaldehydes, silyl enolates and arene nucleophiles has been developed for the synthesis of potential drug candidate 3-aryl-1-indanones. This reaction features the formation of three C-C bonds, high regioselectivity in a one-pot strategy, broad substrate generality, facile scalability (1.04g), high functional group tolerance and viable substrates. The β-O-silyl ethers generated in-situ from the Mukaiyama aldol reaction were subjected to acid-catalyzed benzylic arylation with strong as well as weak nucleophiles, and the resultant β,β-diaryl esters can undergo a third C-C bond formation with excellent regioselectivity through intramolecular cyclization to afford the indanone products in the same pot. Detailed mechanistic insight leads to a feasible reaction pathway. This transformation opens up a practical and adaptable approach to producing a variety of synthetically valuable transformations and enable the synthesis of medicinally valuable (R)-tolterodine and (+)-indatraline.

Abstract
The para-Claisen rearrangement of aryl 1-propargyl ethers involves two-step [3,3]-sigmatropic rearrangements and dearomatization process, which has high activation barriers and is of challenge. Here we discovered thermal para-Claisen rearrangement of naphthyl 1-propargyl ethers, and it enabled the formation of formal para-C-H propargylation products upon rearomatization. Chirality transfer occurred if optically active propargyl ethers were employed, leading to the construction of aryl/propargyl-containing stereogenic centers. Moreover, catalytic asymmetric dearomatization of naphthyl 1-propargyl ethers with different substitution at para-position gave access to benzocyclohexenones bearing all-carbon quaternary stereocenters. The reaction was accelerated by a chiral N,N'-dioxide/Co(OTf)2 complex catalyst to achieve high yields (up to 98 %) and high enantioselectivities (up to 93 % ee). The DFT calculations and experimental results provided important clues to clarify the para-Claisen rearrangement process as well as the chiral induction and remote delivery.

Abstract
Unlike phosphonium ylides used extensively for C═C bond formation, herein we disclose the direct use of phosphonium salts for site-selective alkylation to p-quinols via a 5-membered betaine-type intermediate. This strategy provides a novel and general approach for the synthesis of α-(m-aminoaryl) esters, amides and ketones under ambient conditions. The reaction proceeds through in situ generation of P-ylide, alkylation and aromatization. Reaction is highly compatible with diverse functional phosphonium salts and amines.

Abstract
A catalytic [3 + 2]-cycloaddition/Friedel-Crafts alkylative desymmetrization strategy has been developed for the stereoselective construction of linear and bridged polycyclic pyrroles from alkynylcyclohexa-2,5-dienones. This strategy was further explored for the synthesis of 3-arylpyrroles under Brønsted acid catalysis. Reaction is highly chemo-, regio-, and stereoselective and is compatible with wide range of functionalized cyclohexa-2,5-dienones/pyrroles (>51 examples, ≤98% yields). Gram-scale synthesis and synthetic utility of the products have also been demonstrated to showcase the robustness of present method.

Abstract
Synthetic chemists have learned to mimic nature in using hydrogen bonds and other weak interactions to dictate the spatial arrangement of reaction substrates and to stabilize transition states to enable highly efficient and selective reactions. The activation of a catalyst molecule itself by hydrogen‐bonding networks, in order to enhance its catalytic activity to achieve a desired reaction outcome, is less explored in organic synthesis, despite being a commonly found phenomenon in nature. Herein, we show our investigation into this underexplored area by studying the promotion of carbonyl‐olefin metathesis reactions by hydrogen‐bonding‐assisted Brønsted acid catalysis, using hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) solvent in combination with para‐toluenesulfonic acid (pTSA). Our experimental and computational mechanistic studies reveal not only an interesting role of HFIP solvent in assisting pTSA Brønsted acid catalyst, but also insightful knowledge about the current limitations of the carbonyl‐olefin metathesis reaction.

Abstract
We have developed a catalyst-free visible-light-driven C(sp2)-H arylation of unprotected phenols with arylbromides to give 2-arylated phenols. This reaction proceeds through the excitation of an electron donor-acceptor complex between a phenolate and an arylbromide, electron transfer, and debrominative C(sp2)-C(sp2) coupling.

Abstract
Many synthetic methods that use fluorinated alcohols as solvents have been reported, and the fluorinated alcohols have been found to be crucial to the success of these methods. In addition, there have been reports indicating that adding a weakly coordinated fluorine-containing anion, such as BF4-, PF6-, or SbF6-, to fluorinated alcohols can improve yields. The boosting effect of fluorinated alcohols is attributed mainly to hydrogen bond activation. A few studies have suggested that the very polar fluorinated alcohols can stabilize cationic reaction intermediates. However, how they do so and why weakly coordinated fluorine-containing anions improve yields have not been studied in depth. Here, we used quaternary ammonium cations, a quaternary phosphonium cation, and a triaryl-substituted carbocation as models for short-lived cationic intermediates and studied the possible interactions of these cations with fluorinated alcohols and BF4-, PF6-, or SbF6-. On the basis of the results, we propose that the C-F dipoles of fluorinated alcohols and the E-F dipoles (where E is B, P, or Sb) of weakly coordinated fluorine-containing anions stabilized these cations by intermolecular charge-dipole interactions. We deduced that in the same fashion the C-F and E-F dipoles can thermodynamically stabilize cationic reaction intermediates.

The synthesis of 2-oxygenated dihydrobenzofurans involving the [3 + 2] coupling of quinone monoacetals with vinyl ethers has been realized by tetrabutylammonium triflate catalysis. The reaction involves a new activation method of the acetal moiety in quinone monoacetals under acid-free conditions affording the highly oxygenated dihydrobenzofurans. This new activation mode was achieved by using the triflate anion catalyst for stabilization of the highly reactive cationic intermediate.

Abstract
The tandem decarboxylative condensation-dimerization reaction of l-proline with 2,5-cyclohexadienones including p-quinone monoacetals, p-quinol ethers, and p-quinols is reported to provide a concise and rapid synthesis of octahydro-dipyrroloquinoline compounds. The reaction features the use of cost-effective and readily available starting materials, high efficiency, metal-free and green reaction conditions. The reaction is applied to the synthesis of incargranine B aglycone. The discovery of this reaction may suggest a biosynthetic pathway from 2,5-cyclohexadienones and proline for natural ingredients containing pyrroloquinoline moieties.

Abstract
The three-component reactions of α-amino acids, p-quinone monoacetals (or p-quinol ethers), and diarylphosphine oxides have been developed for the synthesis of 3-(diarylphosphinyl) anilides and N-aryl-2-diarylphosphinylpyrrolidines. The transformations may involve the in situ generation of conjugated azomethine ylides or 2-azaallyl anion species from the reaction of α-amino acids and p-quinone monoacetals, which are further trapped by diarylphosphine oxides.

Abstract
Hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) is a solvent with unique properties that has recently gained attention for promoting a wide range of challenging chemical reactions. It was initially believed that HFIP was almost exclusively involved in the stabilization of cationic intermediates, owing to its high polarity and low nucleophilicity. However, in many cases, the mechanism of action of HFIP appears to be more complex. Recent findings reveal that many Lewis and Brønsted acid-catalyzed transformations conducted in HFIP additionally involve cooperation between the catalyst and HFIP hydrogen-bond clusters, akin to Lewis- or Brønsted acid-assisted-Brønsted acid catalysis. This feature article showcases the remarkable versatility of HFIP in Lewis and Brønsted acid-catalyzed reactions, with an emphasis on examples yielding mechanistic insight.

Abstract
We have demonstrated that small, modular, tetrameric peptides featuring the Lewis-basic residue β-dimethylaminoalanine (Dmaa) are capable of atroposelectively coupling naphthols and ester-bearing quinones to yield non-C2 -symmetric BINOL-type scaffolds with good yields and enantioselectivity. The study culminates in the asymmetric synthesis of backbone-substituted scaffolds similar to 3,3'-disubstituted BINOLs, such as (R)-TRIP, with good (94:6 e.r.) to excellent (>99.9:0.1 e.r.) enantioselectivity after recrystallization, and a diastereoselective net arylation of the minimally modified nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) naproxen.

Abstract
A metal free and highly regioselective oxidative arylation reaction of fluorophenols is described. The relative position of the fluoride leaving group (i.e., ortho or para) controls the 1,2 or 1,4 nature of the arylated quinone product, lending versatility and generality to this oxidative, defluorinative, arylation concept.

Abstract
Various aryl-substituted purine derivatives were synthesized through the direct arylation of halopurines with aromatic compounds, facilitated by the combination of triflic acid and fluoroalcohol. This metal-free method is complementary to conventional coupling reactions using metal catalysts and reagents for the syntheses of aryl-substituted purine analogues.

Abstract
Transition-metal-free regioselecitive C-H arylation of 2-naphthols with diaryliodonium salts has been developed. The reaction proceeds under very simple experimental conditions and affords a range of products with various substitution patterns. The method allows for the incorporation of electron-deficient aryls, which complements well currently existing metal-free aryl-aryl cross-couplings of phenols that have been so far restricted to the introduction of electron-rich aryl moieties. The mechanism of the reaction was studied by means of DFT calculations, demonstrating that the C-C bond formation occurs via a dearomatization of 2-naphthol substrate, followed by a subsequent rearomatization by tautomerization. The computations show that the use of a low polarity solvent and an insoluble inorganic base is key to securing the high selectivity of the C-C coupling over a competing C-O arylation pathway, by preventing the incipient deprotonation of 2-naphthol.

Abstract
We report here a method of direct Friedel-Crafts benzylation of arenes with benzylic alcohols using cheap and readily available bisulfate salt as the catalyst in hexafluoroisopropanol. The catalytic system is powerful with a quite diverse group of functionalized arenes and benzylic alcohols. These mild conditions provide a straightforward synthesis of a variety of unsymmetrical diarylmethanes in high yield with good to high regioselectivity. An SN1 mechanism involving activation of the hydroxy group through a hydrogen bond is proposed.

Abstract
Ring-opening hydroarylation of cyclopropanes is typically limited to substrates bearing a donor-acceptor motif. Here, the transformation is achieved for monosubstituted cyclopropanes by using catalytic Brønsted acid in hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) solvent, constituting a rare example where such cyclopropanes engage in intermolecular C-C bond formation. Branched products are obtained when electron-rich arylcyclopropanes react with a broad scope of arene nucleophiles in accord with a simple SN1-type ring-opening mechanism. In contrast, linear products are obtained when cyclopropylketones react with electron-rich arene nucleophiles. In the latter case, mechanistic experiments and DFT-calculations support a homo-conjugate addition pathway.

Abstract
A general, Brønsted acid catalyzed method for the room temperature, nucleophilic ring opening of donor-acceptor cyclopropanes in fluorinated alcohol solvent, HFIP, is described. Salient features of this method include an expanded cyclopropane scope, including those bearing single keto-acceptor groups and those bearing electron-deficient aryl groups. Notably, the catalytic system proved amenable to a wide range of nucleophiles including arenes, indoles, azides, diketones, and alcohols.
