Synthesis of Octaaryl Naphthalenes and Anthracenes with Different Substituents

Construction of Annulated Spiro[4.4]-nonane-diones via the Tandem [4 + 2]-Cycloaddition/Aromatization Reaction

A method for the synthesis of both symmetric and asymmetric fused spiro[4.4]-nonane-dione derivatives has been developed. It is based on a Diels-Alder reaction of spiro[4.4]nona-2,7-diene-1,6-dione as a dienophile component followed by immediate aromatization of the adduct. An active diene component can be generated using the tetrabromoxylene/NaI system, the 1,3-diphenylisobenzofuran/BF3 system, or substituted cyclones.

Collective Synthesis of Illudalane Sesquiterpenes via Cascade Inverse Electron Demand (4 + 2) Cycloadditions of Thiophene S,S-Dioxides

Thiophene S,S-dioxides are underutilized tools for the de novo construction of benzene rings in organic synthesis. We report a collective synthesis of nine illudalane sesquiterpenes using bicyclic thiophene S,S-dioxides as generalized precursors to the indane core of the natural products. Exploiting furans as unusual dienophiles in this inverse electron demand Diels-Alder cascade, this concise and convergent approach enables the synthesis of these targets in as little as five steps. Theoretical studies rationalize the reactivity of thiophene S,S-dioxides with both electron-poor and electron-rich dienophiles and reveal reaction pathways involving either nonpolar pericyclic or bifurcating ambimodal cycloadditions. Overall, this work demonstrates the wider potential of thiophene S,S-dioxides as convenient and flexible precursors to polysubstituted arenes.

Redox-Divergent Construction of (Dihydro)thiophenes with DMSO

Thiophene-based rings are one of the most widely used building blocks for the synthesis of sulfur-containing molecules. Inspired by the redox diversity of these features in nature, we demonstrate herein a redox-divergent construction of dihydrothiophenes, thiophenes, and bromothiophenes from the respective readily available allylic alcohols, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), and HBr. The redox-divergent selectivity could be manipulated mainly by controlling the dosage of DMSO and HBr. Mechanistic studies suggest that DMSO simultaneously acts as an oxidant and a sulfur donor. The synthetic potentials of the products as platform molecules were also demonstrated by various derivatizations, including the preparation of bioactive and functional molecules.

A platform for on-the-complex annulation reactions with transient aryne intermediates

Organometallic complexes are ubiquitous in chemistry and biology. Whereas their preparation has historically relied on ligand synthesis followed by coordination to metal centers, the ability to efficiently diversify their structures remains a synthetic challenge. A promising yet underdeveloped strategy involves the direct manipulation of ligands that are already bound to a metal center, also known as chemistry-on-the-complex. Herein, we introduce a versatile platform for on-the-complex annulation reactions using transient aryne intermediates. In one variant, organometallic complexes undergo transition metal-catalyzed annulations with in situ generated arynes to form up to six new carbon-carbon bonds. In the other variant, an organometallic complex bearing a free aryne is generated and intercepted in cycloaddition reactions to access unique scaffolds. Our studies, centered around privileged polypyridyl metal complexes, provide an effective strategy to annulate organometallic complexes and access complex metal-ligand scaffolds, while furthering the synthetic utility of strained intermediates in chemical synthesis.

Synthesis of Decaarylanthracene with Nine Different Substituents

A synthesis of decaarylanthracene with nine different substituents has been accomplished by a coupling/ring-transformation strategy. The oxidation of tetraarylthiophenes with four different substituents to the corresponding thiophene S-oxides and a [4 + 2] cycloaddition with a double benzyne precursor afforded a multiply arylated naphthalene derivative. Subsequently, the naphthalene derivative was converted into a naphthalyne, and then a [4 + 2] cycloaddition of another thiophene S-oxide provided decaarylanthracenes with nine different aryl groups.

Synthesis and Redox Properties of Superbenzene Porphyrin Conjugates

Superbenzene porphyrin conjugates find wide range of applications from nonlinear optical materials to semiconductors. Herein, we report the synthesis and characterization of 5,15-bis(3,5-di-tert-butylphenyl)-10,20-bis(pentaphenylphenyl)phenylporphyrin and its Zinc-metallated complex. Oxidative planarization of 5,15-bis(3,5-di-tert-butylphenyl)-10,20-bis(pentaphenylphenyl)phenylporphyrin and its metallated complex was carried out by using NOBF₄ as an oxidizing agent. The formation of superbenzene porphyrin conjugates validates its Scholl type reactions. The laboratory-synthesized porphyrin conjugates were characterized experimentally using spectroscopic techniques such as ¹H NMR, ¹³C NMR, electron spin resonance, and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy for structural conformation. In addition, density functional theory calculations were carried out to validate the experimental results. The theoretical and experimental results show that the 4-(pentaphenylphenyl)phenyl ligand increases the stability, optical properties, and rate of planarization of synthesized porphyrins. The conjugates exhibited intense and distant electronic communication between two hexabenzocoronene sites, taking advantage of porphyrin as a π-spacer. The π-radical cation has also been found to be an intermediate in oxidative C-C bond formation. NICS calculations support such a conclusion.

Modular Synthesis of Furans with up to Four Different Substituents by a trans-Carboboration Strategy

Propargyl alcohols, on treatment with MHMDS (M=Na, K), B₂ (pin)₂ , an acid chloride and a palladium/copper co-catalyst system, undergo a reaction cascade comprised of trans-diboration, regioselective acylation, cyclization and dehydration to give trisubstituted furylboronic acid pinacol ester derivatives in good yields; subsequent Suzuki coupling allows a fourth substituent of choice to be introduced and hence tetrasubstituted (arylated) furans to be formed. In terms of modularity, the method seems unrivaled, not least because each product can be attained by two orthogonal but convergent ways ("diagonal split"). This asset is illustrated by the "serial" formation of a "library" of all twelve possible furan isomers that result from systematic permutation of four different substituents about the heterocyclic core.

2,6,10-Triphenylenotriyne: a star-shaped trisaryne

The synthesis and reactivity of an efficient precursor of a triphenylene-based trisaryne synthon is reported for the first time.

Synthesis and Physical Study of Perylene and Anthracene Polynitrile as Electron Acceptors

Attaching electron-withdrawing nitrile groups to π-conjugated systems is an effective approach toward electron acceptors. By combining various cyanation methodologies, perylene and anthracene polynitriles with up to eight nitrile substituents on one aromatic scaffold were synthesized. This strategy produces stable electron acceptors with lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) levels comparable to benchmark acceptors. A very stable octanitrile anion was also produced serendipitously. Reactivity patterns of these acceptors were rationalized by density functional theory (DFT) calculation.

Towards the Design of Optically Active Thiophene S-Oxides using Quantum Chemistry

The importance of axially chiral biaryls has risen steeply in the recent decades. This structural motif proved to be successful in catalytic asymmetric synthesis and the configuration of the biaryl axis is decisive for the biological activity. A new approach for the atroposelective synthesis of biaryls would be through a cycloaddition between an enantiopure phenyl-substituted thiophene S-oxide and an alkyne. Importantly, the chiral center of the thiophene S-oxide needs to be stable enough to avoid pyramidal inversion during the cycloaddition. Considering that the racemization of thiophene monoxides has been scarcely investigated so far, we perform a thorough quantum chemical study on the inversion barriers of a large number of chiral thiophene S-oxide derivatives. Our main goal is to identify substitution patterns leading to stable atropisomers at room temperature. Appealingly, the role of stereoelectronic effects and the position of the substituents as well as the importance of aromaticity on the pyramidal inversion barrier are elucidated for the first time.

Chiroptical Properties of Twisted Acenes: Experimental and Computational Study

Acenes that are twisted out of planarity are expected to display chiroptical properties. However, the effect of twisting on the chiroptical properties of acenes has not been investigated computationally or experimentally. Herein, we present a computational investigation of the chiroptical properties of anthracenes to pentacenes, combined with an experimental study using a series of helically locked acenes, twisted to different torsional angles in their enantiopure form. The lowest energy transition, which is relatively weak in acenes, becomes dominant in their circular dichroism spectra upon twisting. We find that the rotational strength of acenes consistently increases with increasing twist. The experimental data obtained from enantiopure tethered twistacenes show the same trend as the calculated result, with a strong Cotton effect and anisotropy factor, rendering twisted acenes as excellent chiroptical materials.

Porphyrin-Hexaphenylbenzene Conjugates via Mixed Cyclotrimerization Reactions

Mixed cyclotrimerization reactions of diarylacetylenes (tolans) were applied to generate a library of multiple porphyrin-hexaphenylbenzene (HPB) architectures. Successful reactions, which could be influenced by the ratio of tolan starting materials, were conducted using dicobaltoctacarbonyl as a catalyst. Separation of the reaction products was performed by chromatographic and crystallization techniques. The physical properties were investigated with respect to the number of porphyrins per HPB and their substitution pattern.

The anionic Fries rearrangement: a convenient route to ortho-functionalized aromatics

The scope and mechanism of anionic (hetero-) Fries rearrangements are summarized for various migrating groups and arenes, including applications and computational studies.

Helically Locked Tethered Twistacenes

Twisting linear acenes out of planarity affects their electronic and optical properties, and induces chirality. However, it is difficult to isolate the effect of twisting from the substituent effect. Moreover, many twistacenes (twisted acenes) readily racemize in solution. Here, we introduce a series of twistacenes having an anthracene backbone diagonally tethered by an n-alkyl bridge, which induces a twist of various angles. This allows us to systematically monitor the effect of twisting on electronic and optical properties. We find that absorption is bathochromically shifted with increasing twist, while fluorescence quantum efficiency drops dramatically. The tethered twistacenes were isolated to their enantiomerically pure form, displaying strong chiroptical properties and anisotropy factor ( g-value). No racemization was observed even upon prolonged heating, rendering these tethered twistacenes suitable as enantiopure helical building units for π-conjugated backbones.
