Creation of "Rose Petal" and "Lotus Leaf" Effects on Alumina by Surface Functionalization and Metal-Ion Coordination

Topochemistry for Difficult Peptide-Polymer Synthesis: Single-Crystal-to-Single-Crystal Synthesis of an Isoleucine-Based Polymer, a Hydrophobic Coating Material

Polymers of hydrophobic amino acids are predicted to be potential coating materials for the creation of hydrophobic surfaces. The oligopeptides of hydrophobic amino acids are called "difficult peptides"; as the name suggests, it is difficult to synthesize them by conventional methods. We circumvented this synthetic challenge by adopting topochemical azide-alkyne cycloaddition (TAAC) polymerization of a hydrophobic dipeptide monomer. We designed an Ile-based dipeptide, decorated with azide and alkyne, which arrange in the crystal in a head-to-tail fashion with the azide and alkyne of the adjacent molecules in a ready-to-react orientation. The monomer, on mild heating of its crystals, undergoes regiospecific TAAC polymerization to yield a 1,4-disubstituted-triazole-linked polymer in a single-crystal-to-single-crystal fashion. The solid obtained after evaporation of the monomer solution also maintained crystallinity and underwent regiospecific topochemical polymerization as in the case of crystals. This topochemical polymerization could be studied using different techniques such as FTIR, NMR, DSC, GPC, MALDI, PXRD, and SCXRD. Since the polymer is insoluble in common solvents and hence difficult to coat surfaces, the monomer was first sprayed and evaporated on various surfaces and polymerized on the surface. Such polymer-coated surfaces exhibited water contact angles of up to 134°, showing that this Ile-derived polymer is very hydrophobic and can potentially be used as a coating material for various applications.

Macrocycles and Acyclic Cucurbit[n]urils as Pseudo[2]catenane Partners for Long-Acting Neuromuscular Blocks and Rapid Reversal In Vivo

Long-acting neuromuscular blocks followed by rapid reversal may provide prolonged surgeries with improved conditions by omitting repetitive or continuous administration of the neuromuscular blocking agent (NMBA), eliminating residual neuromuscular block and minimizing postoperative recovery, which, however, is not clinically available. Here, we demonstrate that imidazolium-based macrocycles (IMCs) and acyclic cucurbit[n]urils (ACBs) can form such partners by functioning as long-acting NMBAs and rapid reversal agents through a pseudo[2]catenation mechanism based on stable complexation with Ka values of over 109 M-1. In vivo experiments with rats reveal that, at the dose of 2- and 3-fold ED90, one IMC attains a duration of action corresponding to 158 or 442 min for human adults, covering most of prolonged surgeries. The block can be reversed by one ACB with recovery time significantly shorter than that achieved by sugammadex for reversing the block of rocuronium, the clinically most widely used intermediate-acting NMBA.

Metallosupramolecular polymers: current status and future prospects

Metallo-supramolecular polymers have gained increasing attention and witnessed continuous development as a vibrant new research interest in the domain of soft materials. These nonconventional polymers have found widespread application in materials and biology owing to their well-defined and diversified topologies and the distinct dynamic nature of the metallosupramolecular interactions against various stimuli. Because of the intriguing redox, photonic, electronic, and magnetic properties, these stimuli-responsive supramolecular structures have attracted considerable interest for optoelectronic device fabrication. However, it still remains challenging to develop stimuli responsive systems with offbeat applications. Furthermore, achieving spatiotemporal control remains elusive with thermoresponsive and sono-responsive metallosupramolecular polymers, which encounter the disadvantage of poor precision control. Additionally, controlling the morphology of these soft materials on the mesoscale, both in solution and on substrates, has many challenges. In this review, we discuss the recent developments and future directions for the construction of stimuli responsive metallosupramolecular systems targeting practical applications. Furthermore, we discuss the synthetic methodologies that have been used to regulate the mesoscale morphology of these materials, such as coordination modulation and pseudomorphic replication. Finally, we briefly cover the burgeoning field of programmed synthesis of metallosupramolecular polymers, emphasizing techniques, such as living polymerization and chemical fuel-driven transiently active systems, which we believe will be the major research directions in the future.

Plasmon-Driven Photochemical Reduction Reaction on Silver Nanostructures for Green Fabrication of Superhydrophobic Surface

Green fabrication of superhydrophobic surface by water-based processing is still challenging, because introduction of the substances with hydrophilic moieties compromises its superhydrophobicity. Herein, a plasmon-driven photochemical reduction reaction under ultraviolet light (UVA) irradiation is first discovered and is applied to deoxygenation of hydrophilic organic adsorbates on rough nano-Ag coating for the formation of stable superhydrophobic surface. A nano-Ag coating with strong localized surface plasmon resonance in the UVA region is prepared by a water-based silver mirror reaction and results in a unique chemical reduction reaction on its surface. Consequently, the low residual hydrophilic functionalities and the formed cross-linked structure of the adsorbate on Ag nanoparticles (NPs) enables the coating to exhibit stable superhydrophobicity against to both air and water. The superhydrophobic Ag NP-coated sandpaper can also be used as a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate to concentrate aqueous analytes for trace detection.

Modifying flexible polymer films towards superhydrophobicity and superoleophobicity by utilizing water-based nanohybrid coatings

The development of superhydrophobic and/or superoleophobic materials has been attracting the attention of the scientific community due to their wide range of applications. In this work, waterborne nanocomposite coatings were developed to be deposited onto flexible polyethylene films in order to modify them into superhydrophobic and even superoleophobic. The coatings consisted of either a low surface energy mixture of silanes/siloxanes or a fluoropolymer in conjunction with the appropriate inorganic nanoparticles that provide the necessary roughness; the effects of nanoparticle type and content on the behaviour was investigated. In both cases, the surface properties were investigated, and the polymer films were found to be superhydrophobic. Depending on the system utilized, the final material exhibited either low water adhesion, thus, being water repellent, or high water adhesion. The use of the fluoropolymer has led to coatings that exhibited superoleophobic behaviour for various organic compounds, as well. The application of the coatings did not influence either the optical transparency or the thermal properties of the polyethylene films. Moreover, the coated surfaces show similar or even better mechanical properties, scratch resistance and chemical durability in comparison to the neat LDPE film.

Altering the Surface Properties of Metal Alloys Utilizing Facile and Ecological Methods

The development of a superhydrophobic and, even, water-repellent metal alloy surface is reported utilizing a simple, fast, and economical way that requires minimum demands on the necessary equipment and/or methods used. The procedure involves an initial irradiation of the metallic specimen using a femtosecond laser, which results in a randomly roughened surface, that is subsequently followed by placing the item in an environment under moderate vacuum (pressure 10^-2 mbar) and/or under low-temperature heating (at temperatures below 120 °C). The effects of both temperature and low pressure on the surface properties (water contact angle and contact angle hysteresis) are investigated and surfaces with similar superhydrophobicity are obtained in both cases; however, a significant difference concerning their water-repellent ability is obtained. The surfaces that remained under vacuum were water-repellent, exhibiting very high values of contact angle with a very low contact angle hysteresis, whereas the surfaces, which underwent thermal processing, exhibited superhydrophobicity with high water adhesion, where water droplets did not roll off even after a significant inclination of the surface. The kinetics of the development of superhydrophobic behavior was investigated as well. The findings were understood when the surface roughness characteristics were considered together with the chemical composition of the surface.

Biotemplated Fabrication of a Multifunctional Superwettable Shape Memory Film for Wearable Sensing Electronics and Smart Liquid Droplet Manipulation

Wearable superwettable surfaces with dynamic tunable wettability and self-healability are promising for advanced wearable electronics, whereas have been rarely reported. Herein, a flexible superhydrophobic shape memory film (SSMF) with switchable surface wettability and high strain sensitivity has been conveniently fabricated. The surface topography of the SSMF can be finely adjusted by a reversible stretching (bending)/recovery way, which makes it feasible to control the surface-switchable adhesive superhydrophobicity by simple body movements, demonstrating great advantages in selective droplet manipulation and smart control of droplet movement. Moreover, benefitting from the hierarchical micro/nanostructures and outstanding sensing performance, the flexible SSMFs with good adaptivity and durability can serve as smart wearable sensors attached to human skin to achieve full-range and real-time detection of human motions and intelligent control of Internet of Things. More interestingly, the unique dynamic dewetting property enables the sensors to work in a humid environment or rainy days. Overall, this work successfully integrates dynamic tunable superwettability into design of intelligent wearable electronics with multifunctions. The obtained SSMF-based wearable surface with dynamic dewetting properties reveals great potential in versatile application fields such as liquid-repellent electronics, wearable droplet manipulators, and all-weather intelligent actuators.

Progress in Molecular Nanoarchitectonics and Materials Nanoarchitectonics

Although various synthetic methodologies including organic synthesis, polymer chemistry, and materials science are the main contributors to the production of functional materials, the importance of regulation of nanoscale structures for better performance has become clear with recent science and technology developments. Therefore, a new research paradigm to produce functional material systems from nanoscale units has to be created as an advancement of nanoscale science. This task is assigned to an emerging concept, nanoarchitectonics, which aims to produce functional materials and functional structures from nanoscale unit components. This can be done through combining nanotechnology with the other research fields such as organic chemistry, supramolecular chemistry, materials science, and bio-related science. In this review article, the basic-level of nanoarchitectonics is first presented with atom/molecular-level structure formations and conversions from molecular units to functional materials. Then, two typical application-oriented nanoarchitectonics efforts in energy-oriented applications and bio-related applications are discussed. Finally, future directions of the molecular and materials nanoarchitectonics concepts for advancement of functional nanomaterials are briefly discussed.

Magnetic-Responsive Superhydrophobic Surface of Magnetorheological Elastomers Mimicking from Lotus Leaves to Rose Petals

In nature, many plants have evolved various wettability surfaces to survive and thrive in diverse environments. For example, the superhydrophobic surface of lotus can keep itself clean, while the rose petals can retain droplets for a long time. The former is referred to the "lotus effect," and the latter is known as the "rose petal effect." This research proposes a method to fabricate magnetic-responsive superhydrophobic magnetorheological elastomers (MREs) which could reversibly and instantly transition their surface wetting state between the "lotus effect" and the "rose petal effect." These surfaces with controllable wettability could find applications in the manipulation of liquids in biological and chemical systems. The MREs are cured by applying a uniform magnetic field to form "mountain-like" microstructures on their surfaces. This initial surface is rough and exhibits the lotus leaf effect. Because of the nonuniform magnetically induced deformation, the surface micromorphology and roughness can be altered by an applied magnetic field. The state of water droplets on its surface is changed from the Wenzel state to the Cassie-Baxter (CB) state. Therefore, the proposed MRE surface could switch their dynamic wetting features between the "rose petals" and "lotus leaves" via a magnetic field. An experimental platform for the wetting features of MRE surfaces is established to characterize the dynamic behaviors of water drops on MREs under a magnetic field. A magneto-mechanic coupled model is proposed to interpret how the magnetic field influences the MRE surface as well as the droplet movement.

Photo-switchable smart superhydrophobic surface with controllable superwettability

An azobenzene-based smart superhydrophobic surface undergoes reversible transformations among multiple bioinspired superwetting states through photo-manipulation, demonstrating promising potential on a rewritable platform for droplet transportation.

Hydrogels Self-Assembled from an Azobenzene Building Block: Stability toward UV Irradiation in the Gel and Thin-Film States

Azobenzene and its derivatives are widely used as photoresponsive units for the fabrication of photoresponsive smart materials. In this work, two azobenzene derivatives were designed and investigated as hydrogelators, namely N-4-azodiphenyl-maleimic acid (ADPMA) and N-4-azodiphenyl-succinic acid (ADPSA) bearing azobenzene and carboxylic acid segments. In the process of deprotonation/protonation of the carboxylic acids by pH variation, the self-assembly of these two gelators was triggered. ADPMA could transform from solution to hydrogel while the solution of ADPSA formed a precipitate under the same conditions. The solution-gel/precipitate transformation can be repeated by changing the pH. In contrast to the conventional responsiveness to UV-light irradiation for azobenzene-based gels, the ADPMA hydrogel shows typical trans-cis isomerization of the azobenzene unit in solution, yet the hydrogel demonstrates remarkable stability to UV light irradiation in both the bulk gel and thin film states.

Robust Amphiphobic Few-Layer Black Phosphorus Nanosheet with Improved Stability

Few-layer black phosphorus (FL-BP) has been intensively studied due to its attractive properties and great potential in electronic and optoelectronic applications. However, the intrinsic instability of FL-BP greatly limits its practical application. In this study, the amphiphobic FL-BP is achieved by functionalization of 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorooctyltrichlorosilane (PFDTS) on the surface of FL-BP. The obtained PFDTS coated FL-BP (FL-BP/PFDTS) demonstrates enhanced stability, which is not observed during significant degradation for 2 months in high moisture content environment (95% humidity). Particularly, attributing to the surface amphiphobicity, FL-BP/PFDTS exhibits strong surface water repellency in the presence of oleic acid (as the contaminant), while other passivation coating layers (such as hydrophilic or hydrophobic coating) become hydrophilicity under such conditions. Owing to this advantage, the obtained FL-BP/PFDTS demonstrates enhanced stability in high moisture content environment for 2 months, even though the surface is contaminated by oil liquid or other organic solvents (such as oleic acid, CH2Cl2, and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone). The passivation of FL-BP by amphiphobic coating provides an effective approach for FL-BP stabilization toward future applications.

Mimicking from Rose Petal to Lotus Leaf: Biomimetic Multiscale Hierarchical Particles with Tunable Water Adhesion

Water-droplet adhesions of the coatings constructed by all-polymer multiscale hierarchical particles (MHPs) were finely adjusted within the range from highly adhesive to self-cleanable. The MHPs were synthesized via thermal-induced polymerization of the reactants absorbed into self-made hollow reactors and in situ capping of nanocomplexes onto the reactors' shell simultaneously. The dynamic wettability of the prepared MHPs was tuned between water-droplet sliding and water-droplet adhering by simply controlling the type of capped nanocomplexes. Water-adhesive force changed in the range from 31.28 to 89.34 μN. In addition, the raspberry-like particles (MHPs without nanocomplex capping) were used to construct superhydrophobic rose-petal-like surface with a high water-adhesive force, which can be applied in microdroplet transportation without loss. The MHPs with appropriate nanocomplex capping were used to fabricate superhydrophobic lotus-leaf-like fabric, exhibiting excellent antifouling property and superior mechanical stability. We believe that the prepared superhydrophobic MHPs with diverse water-adhesive forces are promising in potential academic research and industrial applications.

Is Superhydrophobicity Equal to Underwater Superaerophilicity: Regulating the Gas Behavior on Superaerophilic Surface via Hydrophilic Defects

Superhydrophobic surfaces have long been considered as superaerophilic surfaces while being placed in the aqueous environment. However, versatile gas/solid interacting phenomena were reported by utilizing different superhydrophobic substrates, indicating that these two wetting states cannot be simply equated. Herein, we demonstrate how the hydrophilic defects on the superhydrophobic track manipulate the underwater gas delivery, without deteriorating the water repellency of the surface in air. The versatile gas-transporting processes can be achieved on the defected superhydrophobic surfaces; on the contrary, in air, a water droplet is able to roll on those surfaces indistinguishably. Results show that the different media pressures applied on the two wetting states determine the diversified fluid-delivering phenomena; that is, the pressure-induced hydrophilic defects act as a gas barrier to regulate the bubble motion behavior under water. Through the rational incorporation of hydrophilic defects, a series of gas-transporting behaviors are achieved purposively, for example, gas film delivery, bubble transporting, and anisotropic bubble gating, which proves the feasibility of this underwater air-controlling strategy.

Manipulation of the Superhydrophobicity of Plasma-Etched Polymer Nanostructures

The manipulation of droplet mobility on a nanotextured surface by oxygen plasma is demonstrated by modulating the modes of hydrophobic coatings and controlling the hierarchy of nanostructures. The spin-coating of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) allows for heterogeneous hydrophobization of the high-aspect-ratio nanostructures and provides the nanostructured surface with "sticky hydrophobicity", whereas the self-assembled monolayer coating of perfluorodecyltrichlorosilane (FDTS) results in homogeneous hydrophobization and "slippery superhydrophobicity". While the high droplet adhesion (stickiness) on a nanostructured surface with the spin-coating of PTFE is maintained, the droplet contact angle is enhanced by creating hierarchical nanostructures via the combination of oxygen plasma etching with laser interference lithography to achieve "sticky superhydrophobicity". Similarly, the droplet mobility on a slippery nanostructured surface with the self-assembled monolayer coating of FDTS is also enhanced by employing the hierarchical nanostructures to achieve "slippery superhydrophobicity" with modulated slipperiness.

Stepwise control of host-guest interaction using a coordination polymer gel

Precise control of host-guest interaction as seen in biological processes is difficult to achieve with artificial systems. Herein we have exploited the thermodynamic benefits of a system in equilibrium to achieve controlled stepwise release and capture of cyclodextrin (guest) using a coordination polymer (Mg-CP) as the host and temperature as the stimulus. Since temperature is not a precision stimulus for artificial host-guest interaction, the present system is a distinct prototype that manifests temperature-controlled natural host-guest interaction. The described coordination polymeric host system, when incorporated into a hydrogel matrix, provides a microenvironment that facilitates the stepwise release of α-CD in response to temperature variation within a quasi-solid state. The work demonstrated here may pave the way towards thermally controlled delivery and monitoring of otherwise spectroscopically silent molecules such as cyclodextrins.
