Abstract
The NHC-catalyzed enantioselective [4 + 2] annulation of 9H-fluorene-1-carbaldenydes with cyclic imines was successfully developed. A series of optically enriched polycyclic dihydroisoquinolinones were synthesized in moderate to excellent yields with good to excellent enantioselectivities. In addition, this efficient method could also be amenable to the synthesis of spirocyclic compounds by using isatin-derived ketimines as the electrophiles.

Abstract
Organocatalyzed diastereo- and enantioselective [3 + 2] cycloaddition reactions of donor-acceptor (D-A) cyclopropanes with isatin-derived ketimines are presented. Different from well-developed Lewis acid activation protocols which promote the reactivity of D-A cyclopropanes through coordinating to the acceptor group, in this reaction, dicyanocyclopropylmethyl ketones can be activated through nucleophilic activation of the donor group by using dihydroquinine-derived squaramide as Brønsted base catalyst. The reaction affords functionalized spiro[oxindole-3,2'-pyrrolidines] with two nonadjacent tetra- and tri-substituted stereocenters in 83-99% yields, moderate to excellent diastereoselectivities (up to >20:1 diastereomeric ratio (dr)), and excellent enantioselectivities (up to >99% enantiomeric excess (ee)) under mild conditions.

Abstract
We report herein an efficient NHC-catalyzed kinetic resolution of acyclic tertiary propargylic alcohols that provides them in high to excellent enantioselectivity. This is the first example of kinetic resolution realized by enantioselective acylation. The recovered enantioenriched alcohols can be facilely converted into other valuable compounds such as densely functionalized tertiary alcohols and carbmates in high yields and excellent stereopurity. Density functional theory calculations were performed to determine the reaction mechanism and to understand the origin of enantiodiscrimination.

Abstract
The construction of N-N axially chiral motifs is an important research topic, owing to their wide occurrence in natural products, pharmaceuticals and chiral ligands. One efficient method is the atroposelective dihydropyrimidin-4-one formation. We present herein a direct catalytic synthesis of N-N atropisomers with simultaneous creation of contiguous axial and central chirality by oxidative NHC (N-heterocyclic carbenes) catalyzed (3 + 3) cycloaddition. Using our method, we are able to synthesize structurally diverse N-N axially chiral pyrroles and indoles with vicinal central chirality or bearing a 2,3-dihydropyrimidin-4-one moiety in moderate to good yields and excellent enantioselectivities. Further synthetic transformations of the obtained axially chiral pyrroles and indoles derivative products are demonstrated. The reaction mechanism and the origin of enantioselectivity are understood through DFT calculations.

Abstract
The N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-catalyzed generation of ortho-quinodimethanes (o-QDMs) from 9H-fluorene-1-carbaldehydes followed by the interception with activated ketones resulting in the enantioselective synthesis of tetracyclic δ-lactones is presented. High diastereoselectivity of products, remote C(sp3)-H functionalization, broad substrate scope, and mild reaction conditions are the notable features of the present (4 + 2) annulation.

Abstract
![]()
Optically pure epoxides
are recognized as highly valuable products
and key intermediates, useful in different areas from pharmaceutical
and agrochemical industries to natural product synthesis and materials
science. The predictable fate of the ring-opening process, in terms
of stereoselectivity and often of regioselectivity, enables useful
functional groups to be installed at vicinal carbon atoms in a desired
manner. In this way, products of widespread utility either for synthetic
applications or as final products can be obtained. The advent of asymmetric
organocatalysis provided a new convenient tool, not only for their
preparation but also for the elaboration of this class of heterocycles.
In this review, we focus on recent developments of stereoselective
organocatalytic ring-opening reactions of meso-epoxides,
kinetic resolution of racemic epoxides, and Meinwald-type rearrangement.
Examples of asymmetric organocatalytic processes toward specific synthetic
targets, which include ring opening of an epoxide intermediate, are
also illustrated.

Abstract
The recent advances in the N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-organocatalyzed generation of azolium enolate intermediates and their subsequent interception with electrophiles are highlighted. The NHC-bound azolium intermediates are generated by the addition of NHCs to suitably substituted aldehydes, acid derivatives or ketenes. A broad range of coupling partners can intercept the azolium enolates to form [2+n] cycloadducts (n=2,3,4) and various α-functionalized compounds. The enantioselective synthesis of the target compounds are achieved with the use of chiral NHCs. Herein, we summarized the development that occurred in this subclass of NHC catalysis.

Abstract
We present herein a highly efficient atroposelective synthesis of axially chiral 1,1'-bipyrroles bearing an N-N linkage from simple hydrazine and 1,4-diones. Further product derivatizations led to axially chiral bifunctional compounds with high potential in asymmetric catalysis. For this chrial phosphoric acid (CPA)-catalyzed double Paal-Knorr reaction, an intriguing Fe(OTf)3 -induced enantiodivergence was also observed.

Abstract
Covalent activation of heteroatoms enabled by N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) organic catalysts for enantioselective reactions is evaluated and summarized in this review. To date, sulfur, oxygen, and nitrogen atoms can be activated in this manner to react with another substrate to construct chiral carbon-heteroatom bonds with high optical enantioselectivities. The activation starts with addition of an NHC catalyst to the carbonyl moiety (aldehyde or imine) of substrates that contain heteroatoms. The key in this approach is the formation of intermediates covalently bound to the NHC catalyst, in which the heteroatom of the substrate is activated as a nucleophilic reactive site.

Abstract
N-heterocyclic carbene/copper-cocatalyzed [4 + 3] annulation of salicylaldehydes with aziridines was developed, giving the corresponding 1,4-benzoxazepinones in good yields with exclusive regioselectivity. Copper serves as a Lewis acid to activate the small strained aziridines, and the formation of NHC-salicylaldehyde adduct plays an important role in improving the regioselectivity.

Abstract
A new carbene-catalyzed [4 + 2] annulation of 2 H-azirine-2-carbaldehydes with ketones was developed, thus providing the 2,3-dihydro-6 H-1,3-oxazin-6-one core structures with broad scope and good to excellent yields. Notably, the azolium aza-dienolates generated from the addition of NHCs to 2 H-azirines are first uncovered.

Abstract
Organocatalytic domino processes have become a rapidly growing area of research. N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have emerged as powerful organocatalysts for various transformations and continue to have widespread application. In the last decade, domino reactions catalyzed by NHCs have seen significant progress since the different activation modes could be successfully combined in one process. The most attractive features of these domino sequences include the readily available catalysts and substrates, the simple operational procedures, and the rapid assembly of complex molecular scaffolds with excellent levels of stereocontrol under mild reaction conditions. This review covers the advances in NHC-catalyzed domino reactions by focusing on the reaction scope, limitations, and mechanism with a close attention to the features of the reaction substrates.
