Abstract
Polystyrene (PS) particles were synthesized in ethanol/water mixture by dispersion polymerization using visible light irradiation, with either a N-heterocyclic carbene borane-based photoinitiating system (PIS) or a disulfide. With the full PIS and poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (PEGMA) as stabilizer, the size distributions were broad and the amount of PEGMA had a strong impact on the experiment reproducibility. The addition of a base solved the problem, leading to faster polymerizations, narrower size distributions and larger particles. With the disulfide as sole PIS, bigger and narrowly distributed PS particles were again formed. Quantitative conversion was achieved in each system, with particle size ranging between 100 and 350 nm. The use of poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone) as stabilizer led to significantly larger particles, up to 1.2 μm, with narrow size distributions. The production of such large latex particles by photoinitiated polymerizations is unprecedented.

Abstract
Tumor microenvironment-responsive nanogels loading antitumor drugs can improve the chemotherapy efficiency due to their suitable size, great hydrophilicity, excellent biocompatibility, and sensitivity to specific stimulation. Herein, a simple and effective strategy of one-pot laser-induced emulsion polymerization at 532 nm was developed to prepare carmofur-loaded nanogels based on biocompatible and temperature/pH-sensitive monomers including polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA), N-vinylcaprolactam (NVCL), and 2-(dimethylamino) ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA). The nanogels loading carmofur with dual-stimuli responsive drug release properties were rapidly obtained under laser irradiation (beam diameter 2.5 mm, laser power 60 mW) for only 100 s. These nanogels exhibited an average hydrodynamic diameter of 195.9 nm and a low polydispersity index of 0.115. The effect of monomer ratio on the size, morphology, double-bond conversion, and thermo/pH-sensitivity of nanogels was investigated. The cumulative carmofur release from nanogels at pH 5.0 within 48 h was nearly three times that at pH 7.4, while the release amount at 42 °C was twice that at 25 °C, showing the controlled and sustainable release with the change of pH and temperature. The in vitro release kinetics of carmofur was in accord with first-order release model.

Abstract
In recent years, the exploration of tumor microenvironment has provided a new approach for tumor treatment. More and more researches are devoted to designing tumor microenvironment-responsive nanogels loaded with therapeutic drugs. Compared with other drug carriers, nanogel has shown great potential in improving the effect of chemotherapy, which is attributed to its stable size, superior hydrophilicity, excellent biocompatibility, and responsiveness to specific environment. This review primarily summarizes the common preparation techniques of nanogels (such as free radical polymerization, covalent cross-linking, and physical self-assembly) and loading ways of drug in nanogels (including physical encapsulation and chemical coupling) as well as the controlled drug release behaviors. Furthermore, the difficulties and prospects of nanogels as drug carriers are also briefly described.

Abstract
Boron-centred radicals (boryl radicals) are potential and attractive species in main group chemistry and synthetic chemistry. Recently, the development of boron compounds ligated by N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) has sparked off advavnces in boryl radical chemistry because NHCs can highly stabilise boryl radicals by electronic and steric factors. This review highlights recent synthesis and reactions of such NHC-boryl radicals. From the standpoint of main group chemistry, examples of isolation or detection of unique NHC-boryl radicals are presented. From the standpoint of synthetic chemistry, on the other hand, the development of reactions of user-friendly NHC-boryl radicals, which has contributed to radical chemistry, organoboron chemistry and polymer science, is comprehensively described.

Abstract
In the development of 3D printing fuels, there is a need for new photoinitiating systems working under mild conditions and/or leading to polymers with new and/or enhanced properties. In this context, we introduce herein N-heterocyclic carbene-borane complexes as reagents for a new type of photo-click reaction, the borane-(meth)acrylate click reaction. Remarkably, the higher bond number of boranes relative to thiols induced an increase of the network density associated with faster polymerization kinetics. Solid-state NMR evidenced the strong participation of the boron centers on the network properties, while DMA and AFM showed that the materials exhibit improved mechanical properties, as well as reduced solvent swelling.

Abstract
In the present study, a novel catalytic route for the Knoevenagel condensation reaction has been developed by Pickering interfacial catalysis using magnesium oxide (MgO) as both an emulsion stabilizer and a base catalyst. MgO was prepared by the precipitation method using sodium hydroxide or ammonium hydroxide as the precipitating agent and calcined at different temperatures. The calcined samples were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, AFM, BET, and DLS techniques. The catalytic application of the emulsions stabilized by MgO was investigated for the Knoevenagel condensation reaction of benzaldehyde and its derivatives with malononitrile. All of the reactions were carried out at an ambient temperature (30 °C) under static conditions without stirring. Both the emulsion-stabilizing ability and the catalytic activity of MgO were found to be affected by the method of preparation, calcination temperature, and the nature of the oil phase. It was observed that the method of preparation varied the texture and morphology of MgO and thus the stability and droplet size of the emulsion formed. This was further reflected in the catalytic activity. The highest yield (87%) of the condensation product was obtained with MgO prepared by precipitation using a strong base (NaOH) and further calcined at 400 °C. The developed catalytic system offers several green chemistry advantages such as reusable solid-base catalyst and use of a single material as both emulsion stabilizer and catalyst. Room-temperature reaction under static conditions is an additional advantage of the developed catalytic system.

Abstract
Carbon dots (CDs) have been used for the first time as a sensitizer to initiate and activate free radical and controlled radical polymerization, respectively, based on an ATRP protocol with blue LEDs. Consideration of diverse heteroatom-doped CDs indicated that N-doped CDs could serve as an effective photocatalyst and photosensitizer in combination with LEDs emitting either at 405 nm or 470 nm. Free radical polymerization was initiated by combining the CDs with an iodonium or sulfonium salt in tri(propylene glycol) diacrylate. Polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) by photo-induced ATRP was achieved with CDs and ethyl α-bromophenylacetate using CuII as catalyst in the ppm range. The polymers obtained showed temporal control, narrower dispersity ≲1.5, and chain-end fidelity. The first-order kinetics and ON/OFF experiments additionally gave evidence of the constant concentration of polymer radicals. No remarkable cytotoxic activity was observed for the CDs, underlining their biocompatibility.

Abstract
Clinical diagnostics and therapeutics of tumors are significantly benefitted by the development of multifunctional theranostic agents, which integrate tumor targeting, imaging, and therapeutics. However, the integration of imaging and therapy functionalities to a unimolecular framework remains a great challenge. Herein, a family of amphiphilic gemini iridium(III) complexes (GIC), Ir1-Ir6, are synthesized and characterized. The presence of quaternary ammonium (QA) groups endows GIC with adjustable water solubility and excellent self-assembly properties. Spectroscopic and computational results reveal that introducing QA groups into cyclometalating ligands (ĈN ligands) can overcome the drawback of aggregation-caused emission quenching and ensure Ir1-Ir3 with high emission intensity and excellent singlet oxygen (1O2) generation ability in aqueous media. Cell-based assays indicate that Ir3 shows higher cellular uptake efficiency and localizes specifically in the mitochondria, as well as exhibits outstanding photostability and an impressive phototoxicity index with satisfactory performance in mitochondria-targeted imaging and photodynamic therapy (PDT) of tumor cells. Furthermore, in vivo studies further prove that Ir3 possesses excellent antitumor activity and remarkably inhibits the growth of the HepG2 cells under PDT treatment. Consequently, this study presents a promising strategy for designing clinical application potential multifunctional iridium complex theranostic agents for mitochondria-targeted imaging and PDT in a single molecular framework.

Abstract
Several N-Heterocyclic Carbene (NHC)-boryl sulfides with B-substituents were prepared. The added steric hindrance leads to much improved selectivities as only the NHC-boryl mono-sulfides were obtained. The B-substituted NHC-boranes are also conducive to more selective S to N NHC-boryl shift, provided that the NHC used is not too sterically demanding.

Abstract
A facile and effective C-H functionalization strategy for the synthesis of 2-mercaptobenzothiazoles and 2-mercaptobenzoxazoles is described. 1,3-Propanedithiol was employed to convert benzothiazoles and benzoxazoles to the corresponding heteroarylthiols in the presence of potassium hydroxide and DMSO. This novel protocol is featured by direct C-H mercaptalization of heteroarenes and a simple reaction system.
