Nanoscale Chemical Probing of Metal-Supported Ultrathin Ferrous Oxide via Tip-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy and Scanning Tunneling Microscopy

Metal-supported ultrathin ferrous oxide (FeO) has attracted immense interest in academia and industry due to its widespread applications in heterogeneous catalysis. However, chemical insight into the local structural characteristics of FeO, despite its critical importance in elucidating structure-property relationships, remains elusive. In this work, we report the nanoscale chemical probing of gold (Au)-supported ultrathin FeO via ultrahigh-vacuum tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (UHV-TERS) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). For comparative analysis, single-crystal Au(111) and Au(100) substrates are used to tune the interfacial properties of FeO. Although STM images show distinctly different moiré superstructures on FeO nanoislands on Au(111) and Au(100), TERS demonstrates the same chemical nature of FeO by comparable vibrational features. In addition, combined TERS and STM measurements identify a unique wrinkled FeO structure on Au(100), which is correlated to the reassembly of the intrinsic Au(100) surface reconstruction due to FeO deposition. Beyond revealing the morphologies of ultrathin FeO on Au substrates, our study provides a thorough understanding of the local interfacial properties and interactions of FeO on Au, which could shed light on the rational design of metal-supported FeO catalysts. Furthermore, this work demonstrates the promising utility of combined TERS and STM in chemically probing the structural properties of metal-supported ultrathin oxides on the nanoscale.

Probing Catalytic Sites and Adsorbate Spillover on Ultrathin FeO2-x Film on Ir(111) during CO Oxidation

The spatially resolved identification of active sites on the heterogeneous catalyst surface is an essential step toward directly visualizing a catalytic reaction with atomic scale. To date, ferrous centers on platinum group metals have shown promising potential for low-temperature CO catalytic oxidation, but the temporal and spatial distribution of active sites during the reaction and how molecular-scale structures develop at the interface are not fully understood. Here, we studied the catalytic CO oxidation and the effect of co-adsorbed hydrogen on the FeO2-x/Ir(111) surface. Combining scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), isotope-labeled pulse reaction measurements, and DFT calculations, we identified both FeO2/Ir and FeO2/FeO sites as active sites with different reactivity. The trilayer O-Fe-O structure with its Moiré pattern can be fully recovered after O2 exposure, where molecular O2 dissociates at the FeO/Ir interface. Additionally, as a competitor, dissociated hydrogen migrates onto the oxide film with the formation of surface hydroxyl and water clusters down to 150 K.

Activating lattice oxygen of single-layer ZnO for the catalytic oxidation reaction

Tuning an oxide/metal interface is of critical importance for the performance enhancement of many heterogeneous catalytic reactions. However, catalytic oxidation occurring at the interface between non-reducible oxide and metal has been challenging, since non-reducible oxides hardly lose their lattice oxygen (O_L) or dissociate O₂ from the gas phase. In this work, a ZnO monolayer film on Au(111) is used as an inverse catalyst to investigate CO oxidation occurring at the ZnO/Au(111) interface via high pressure scanning tunneling microscopy. Surface science experiments indicate that oxygen intercalation under the ZnO monolayer film, termed ZnO/O/Au(111), can be achieved via a surface reaction with 1 × 10^-6 mbar O₃. Subsequent exposure of the formed ZnO/O/Au(111) surface to mbar CO at room temperature leads to the recovery of the pristine ZnO/Au(111) surface. Theoretical calculations reveal that O_L adjacent to intercalated oxygen (O_int) is activated due to the O_L-Zn-O_int bonding and surface corrugation, which can be directly involved in CO oxidation. Subsequently, O_int migrates to the formed oxygen vacancy from the subsurface resuming the pristine ZnO structure. These results thus reveal that oxygen intercalation underneath single-layer ZnO will strongly boost the oxidation reaction via activating adjacent lattice oxygen atoms.

Dynamic interplay between metal nanoparticles and oxide support under redox conditions

The dynamic interactions between noble metal particles and reducible metal-oxide supports can depend on redox reactions with ambient gases. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that the strong metal-support interaction (SMSI)-induced encapsulation of platinum particles on titania observed under reducing conditions is lost once the system is exposed to a redox-reactive environment containing oxygen and hydrogen at a total pressure of ~1 bar. Destabilization of the metal-oxide interface and redox-mediated reconstructions of titania lead to particle dynamics and directed particle migration that depend on nanoparticle orientation. A static encapsulated SMSI state was reestablished when switching back to purely oxidizing conditions. This work highlights the difference between reactive and nonreactive states and demonstrates that manifestations of the metal-support interaction strongly depend on the chemical environment.

The cobalt oxidation state in preferential CO oxidation on CoOx/Pt(111) investigated by operando X-ray photoemission spectroscopy

The combination of a reducible transition metal oxide and a noble metal such as Pt often leads to active low-temperature catalysts for the preferential oxidation of CO in excess H₂ gas (PROX reaction). While CO oxidation has been investigated for such systems in model studies, the added influence of hydrogen gas, representative of PROX, remains less explored. Herein, we use ambient pressure scanning tunneling microscopy and ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy on a CoO_x/Pt(111) planar model catalyst to analyze the active phase and the adsorbed species at the CoO_x/Pt(111) interface under atmospheres of CO and O₂ with a varying partial pressure of H₂ gas. By following the evolution of the Co oxidation state as the catalyst is brought to a reaction temperature of above 150 °C, we determine that the active state is characterized by the transformation from planar CoO with Co in the 2+ state to a mixed Co²⁺/Co³⁺ phase at the temperature where CO₂ production is first observed. Furthermore, our spectroscopy observations of the surface species suggest a reaction pathway for CO oxidation, proceeding from CO exclusively adsorbed on Co²⁺ sites reacting with the lattice O from the oxide. Under steady state CO oxidation conditions (CO/O₂), the mixed oxide phase is replenished from oxygen incorporating into cobalt oxide nanoislands. In CO/O₂/H₂, however, the onset of the active Co²⁺/Co³⁺ phase formation is surprisingly sensitive to the H₂ pressure, which we explain by the formation of several possible hydroxylated intermediate phases that expose both Co²⁺ and Co³⁺. This variation, however, has no influence on the temperature where CO oxidation is observed. Our study points to the general importance of a dynamic reducibility window of cobalt oxide, which is influenced by hydroxylation, and the bonding strength of CO to the reduced oxide phase as important parameters for the activity of the system.

Water dissociation on mixed Co-Fe oxide bilayer nanoislands on Au(111)

We investigate the hydroxylation behaviour of mixed Co-Fe oxide nanoislands synthesized on a Au(111) surface under exposure to water vapour at vacuum conditions. The pure Co and Fe bilayer oxides both become hydroxylated by water exposure in vacuum conditions, albeit to a very different extent. It is however an open question how mixed oxides, exposing sites with a mixed coordination to Fe and Co, behave. By forming surface O species with a mixed Fe/Co coordination, we can investigate the nature of such sites. By means of scanning tunnelling microscopy and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, we characterize a series of Co-Fe oxides samples with different Fe contents at the atomic scale and observe a scaling of the hydroxylation degree with the amount of Fe inside the Co-Fe oxides. Our results indicate that the Fe dopants within the Co-Fe oxides have opposing effects on edge and basal plane sites modifying the maximum hydroxylation degree of pure cobalt oxide, perturbing the original binding sites of H, releasing the absorbed H or blocking the diffusion pathway of H.

Exsolution of Iron Oxide on LaFeO3 Perovskite: A Robust Heterostructured Support for Constructing Self-Adjustable Pt-Based Room-Temperature CO Oxidation Catalysts

Constructing highly active and stable surface sites for O₂ activation is essential to lower the barrier of Pt-based catalysts for CO oxidation. Although a few active Pt-metal oxide interfaces have been reported, questions about the stability of these sites under the long-term storage and operation remain unresolved. Here, based on developing a robust FeO_x/LaFeO₃ heterostructure as a support, we constructed stable Pt-support interfaces to achieve highly active CO oxidation at room temperature. Even after it is kept in the air for more than 6 months, the catalyst (without pretreatment) still maintains the high activity like a fresh one, which is superior to metal hydroxide-Pt interfaces, and meets the requirements of long-term storage for emergency use. In situ characterizations and systematic reaction results showed that CO oxidation occurs through an alternative mechanism, which is triggered by intrinsic reactants and self-adjusted to a more active interface in the reaction process. Theoretical calculations and ⁵⁷Fe Mössbauer spectra revealed that abundant cation vacancies significantly increase the activity of surface oxygen species and should be responsible for this unique process. This work demonstrates an alternative concept to fabricate robust and highly active Pt-based catalysts for catalytic oxidation.

Electronic Oxide-Metal Strong Interaction (EOMSI)

Strong metal-support interaction of supported metal catalysts is an important concept to describe the effect of metal-support interactions on the structures and catalytic performances of supported metal particles. By using an example of CeO_x adlayers supported on Ag nanocrystals, herein a concept of electronic oxide-metal strong interaction (EOMSI) is put forward; this interaction significantly affects the electronic structures of oxide adlayers through metal-to-oxide charge transfer. The EOMSI can stabilize oxide adlayers in a low oxidation state under ambient conditions, which individually are not stable; moreover, the oxide adlayers experiencing the EOMSI are resistant to high-temperature oxidation in air to a certain extent. Such an EOMSI concept helps to generalize the strong influence of oxide-metal interactions on the structures and catalytic performance of oxide/metal inverse catalysts, which have been attracting increasing attention.

Synergism of Iron and Platinum Species for Low-Temperature CO Oxidation: From Two-Dimensional Surface to Nanoparticle and Single-Atom Catalysts

CO oxidation is one of the most studied reactions in heterogeneous catalysis. It is present in air cleaning and automotive emission control. It also participates in the removal of CO from streams of hydrogen used in fuel cells. Because of the competitive adsorption of CO and O₂ over active sites, the use of Pt-based catalysts for low-temperature CO oxidation remains a challenge. Recently, great progress has been made with catalysts containing Pt-Fe species because of the contribution of Fe species to O₂ activation. The structure-activity relationship and reaction mechanisms have been investigated with various Pt-Fe catalysts. In this Perspective, we give a summary of the recent advances of low-temperature CO oxidation over Pt-Fe catalysts with a focus on the synergistic effect of Pt and Fe species in the CO and O₂ activation of catalytic reactions. Future prospects for the preparation of highly effective Pt-Fe catalysts are also proposed.

Chapter model systems in heterogeneous catalysis at the atomic level: a personal view

The review presents an overview of studies in the surface science of oxide and related surfaces with an emphasis of the studies performed in the authors’ group. Novel instruments and technique developments, as well as their applications are reported, in an attempt to cover studies on model systems of increasing complexity, including some of the key ingredients of an industrially applied heterogeneous catalyst and its fabrication. The review is intended to demonstrate the power of model studies in understanding heterogeneous catalysis at the atomic level. The studies include those on supported nano-particles, both, prepared in vacuum and from solution, interaction of surfaces and the underlying bulk with molecules from the gas phase, strong metal support interaction, as well as the first attempt to include studies on reactions in confined spaces.

Carbon Monoxide Stripe Motion Driven by Correlated Lateral Hopping in a 1.4 × 1.4 Monolayer Phase on Cu(111)

We report an ultra-high-vacuum low-temperature (4.6 K) scanning tunneling microscopy study of the molecular structure and dynamics of a carbon monoxide (CO) monolayer adsorbed at 20 K on Cu(111). We observe the well-known 1.4 × 1.4 phase of CO/Cu(111) for the first time in real-space imaging. At 4.6 K, the hexagonal symmetry of the monolayer is locally broken by the formation of stripes made of single and double CO rows of different apparent heights. Using density functional theory calculations, we assign the high rows to CO molecules adsorbed mostly at off-center top sites and the low rows to bridge sites. Groups of three or four very high molecules appear randomly and are assigned to nearest-neighbor, titled top site molecules. We observe simultaneous hopping of a few CO molecules between adjacent top and bridge sites, which produces the apparent motion of the stripe pattern.

Reversible oxidation and reduction of gold-supported iron oxide islands at room temperature

Monolayer iron oxides grown on metal substrates have widely been used as model systems in heterogeneous catalysis. By means of ambient-pressure scanning tunneling microscopy (AP-STM), we studied the in situ oxidation and reduction of FeO(111) grown on Au(111) by oxygen (O₂) and carbon monoxide (CO), respectively. Oxygen dislocation lines present on FeO islands are highly active for O₂ dissociation. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements distinctly reveal the reversible oxidation and reduction of FeO islands after sequential exposure to O₂ and CO. Our AP-STM results show that excess O atoms can be further incorporated on dislocation lines and react with CO, whereas the CO is not strong enough to reduce the FeO supported on Au(111) that is essential to retain the activity of oxygen dislocation lines.

Template-free Synthesis of Stable Cobalt Manganese Spinel Hollow Nanostructured Catalysts for Highly Water-Resistant CO Oxidation

Development of spinel oxides as low-cost and high-efficiency catalysts is highly desirable; however, rational synthesis of efficient and stable spinel systems with precisely controlled structure and components remains challenging. We demonstrate the design of complex nanostructured cobalt-based bimetallic spinel catalysts for low-temperature CO oxidation by a simple template-free method. The self-assembled multi-shelled mesoporous spinel nanostructures provide high surface area (203.5 m2/g) and favorable unique surface chemistry for producing abundant active sites and lead to the creation of robust microsphere configured by 16-nm spinel nanosheets, which achieve satisfactory water-resisting property and catalytic activity. Theoretical models show that O vacancies at exposed {110} facets in cubic spinel phase guarantee the strong adsorption of reactive oxygen species on the surface of catalysts and play a key role in the prevention of deactivation under moisture-rich conditions. The design concept with architecture and composition control can be extended to other mixed transition metal oxide compositions.

Atomic-Scale View of the Oxidation and Reduction of Supported Ultrathin FeO Islands

By means of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) measurements, we studied in situ the oxidation and reduction of FeO bilayer islands on Au(111) by oxygen (O₂) and hydrogen (H₂), respectively. The FeO islands respond very dynamically toward O₂, with the coordinatively unsaturated ferrous (CUF) sites at the island edges being essential for O₂ dissociation and O atom incorporation. An STM movie obtained during oxidation reveals how further O₂ molecules can dissociate after the consumption of all initially existing CUF sites through the formation of new CUF sites. In contrast, we found that H₂ molecules only dissociate when vibrationally excited through the ion gauge and only at the basal plane of FeO islands, implying that the CUF sites are not relevant for H₂ dissociation. Our STM results reveal how excess O atoms are incorporated and released in O₂ and H₂ and thus shed light onto the stability of inverse catalysts during a catalyzed reaction.
