Abstract
A mononuclear iron(II) complex, [(TpPh2)FeII(OTf)(CH3CN)] (1) (TpPh2 = hydrotris(3,5-diphenylpyrazol-1-yl)borate, OTf = triflate) has been isolated and its efficiency toward the aliphatic CC bond cleavage reaction of 1,2-diols with dioxygen has been investigated. Separate reactions between 1 and different 1,2-diolates form the corresponding iron(II)-diolate complexes in solution. While the iron(II) complex of the tetradentate TPA (tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine) ligand is not efficient in affecting the CC cleavage of 1,2-diol with dioxygen, complex 1 displays catalytic activity to afford carboxylic acid and aldehyde. Isotope labeling studies with 18O2 reveal that one oxygen atom from dioxygen is incorporated into the carboxylic acid product. The oxygenative CC cleavage reactions occur on the 1,2-diols containing at least one α-H atom. The kinetic isotope effect value of 5.7 supports the abstraction of an α-H by an iron(III)-superoxo species to propagate the CC cleavage reactions. The oxidative cleavage of 1,2-diolates by the iron(II) complex mimics the reaction catalyzed by the nonheme diiron enzyme, myo-inositol oxygenase.

Abstract
Ketyl radicals are synthetically versatile reactive species, but their applications have been hampered by harsh generation conditions employing highly reducing metals. Recently, the pyridine-boryl radical received wide attention as a promising organic reductant because of its mildness as well as convenience in handling. While probing the utility of the pyridine-boryl radical, our group observed facile pinacol coupling reactivity that had not been known at that time. This serendipitous finding was successfully rendered into a practical synthesis of tetraaryl-1,2-diols in up to 99% yield within 1 h. Subsequently, upon examinations of various reaction manifolds, a diastereoselective ketyl-olefin cyclization was accomplished to produce cycloalkanols such as trans-2-alkyl-1-indanols. Compared to the previous methods, the stereocontrolling ability was considerably enhanced by taking advantage of the structurally modifiable boryl group that would be present near the bond-forming site. In this full account, our synthetic efforts with the O-boryl ketyl radicals are disclosed in detail, covering the discovery, optimization, scope expansion, and mechanistic analysis, including density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Abstract
In this paper, a mild strategy for the oxidative cleavage of carbon-carbon bonds catalyzed by Lewis acid was developed in air condition at room temperature. Under such conditions, the bis-carbonyl compounds 3 were directly afforded from the reaction of D-ribose tosylate 1 and aniline in excellent yields through the oxidative cleavage of the key intermediate iminium-ion A and its tautomer enamine B. A series of N-arylated lactam-type iminosugars 5 were then successfully obtained by removing the isopropylidene group from 3 with the aid of the condensation agent DCC. Additionally, reduction of A and the removal of the isopropylidene group could provide N-arylated iminosugars 4. This strategy enables the oxidative cleavage of carbon-carbon bonds under mild conditions and facilitates the synthesis of the novel iminosugars with potent biological activity.

Abstract
A computational investigation of the aerobic oxidative C-C bond cleavage reaction of glycol catalyzed by an Anderson-type heteropolyanion HPA [IMo6O24]5- in the presence of acetonitrile as solvent has been performed at the WB97XD/6-31G(d,p)/lanl2dz level. Two reaction pathways have been identified. The catalytic cycle of each pathway consists of three steps: oxidation cleavage of a glycol molecule by the HPA, oxidation of the HPA by one dioxygen molecule, and, finally, oxidation of a second glycol and regeneration of the catalyst. These reaction pathways have been thoroughly investigated in terms of energetic, natural bond orbital (NBO), natural charges, and geometrical parameters. It is found that (i) even though the top oxygen atoms of the Anderson heteropolyanion are not the most negatively charged ones, they are more likely to react with the diol hydroxyl groups, (ii) a direct relationship between the presence of the iodine ion I(VII) and the studied oxidation reaction could not be identified, and (iii) in terms of energy, the transfer of the two hydrogen atoms is the most energetic step.

Abstract
The selective oxidation of alcohol-d1 to prepare aldehyde-d1 was newly developed by means of NaBD4 reduction/activated MnO2 oxidation. Various aldehyde-d1 derivatives including aromatic and unsaturated aldehyde-d1 can be prepared with a high deuterium incorporation ratio (up to 98% D). Halogens (chloride, bromide, and iodide), alkene, alkyne, ester, nitro, and cyano groups in the substrates are tolerated under the mild conditions. A facile method for deutrium incorporation into aldehydes by mild reduction of NaBD4 of aldehydes and MnO2 oxidation (98% D) is disclosed.![]()

Abstract
Selective cleavage of C-C bonds is very important in organic chemistry, but remains challenging because of their inert chemical nature. Herein, we report that Zn/NC-X catalysts, in which Zn2+ coordinate with N species on microporous N-doped carbon (NC) and X denotes the pyrolysis temperature, can effectively catalyze aerobic oxidative cleavage of C(CO)-C bonds and quantitatively convert acetophenone to methyl benzoate with a yield of 99% at 100 °C. The Zn/NC-950 can be applied for a wide scope of acetophenone derivatives as well as more challenging alkyl ketones. Detail mechanistic investigations reveal that the catalytic performance of Zn/NC-950 can be attributed to the coordination between Zn2+ and N species to change the electronic state of the metal, synergetic effect of the Zn single sites with their surrounding N atoms, as well as the microporous structure with the high surface area and structural defects of the NC.

Abstract
The development of green and sustainable processes to synthesize active pharmaceutical ingredients and key starting materials is a priority for the pharmaceutical industry. A green and sustainable protocol for the oxidative cleavage of olefins to produce pharmaceutically and biologically valuable carboxylic acids is achieved. The developed protocol involves 70% aq. TBHP as an oxidant over a heterogeneous vanadium catalyst system. Notably, the synthesis of industrially important azelaic acid from various renewable vegetable oils is accomplished. The catalyst could be recycled for up to 5 cycles without significant loss in yield and the protocol was successfully demonstrated at the gram-scale.

Abstract
Copper-catalyzed aerobic oxidation conditions were employed to promote the C-C bond cleavage of β-alkoxy alcohols and β-1 compounds (lignin model compounds). Besides these compounds, various 1,2 and 1,3-diols were successfully converted to aldehydes. We propose the Cu(I)-catalyzed mechanism explaining the C-C cleavage of these 1,2 and 1,3-dihydroxy compounds and β-alkoxy alcohols based on XPS data. Although our reaction conditions do not include large excess of bases and elaborated ligand-modified catalysts, copper salts with/without Me-TBD show good catalytic activities for C-C bond cleavage of various lignin model compounds.

Abstract
Selective cleavage and functionalization of C-C bonds have important applications in organic synthesis and biomass utilization. However, functionalization of C-C bonds by controlled cleavage remains difficult and challenging because they are inert. Herein, we describe an unprecedented efficient protocol for the breaking of successive C-C bonds in alcohols to form esters with one or multiple carbon atoms less using heterogeneous cobalt nanoparticles as catalyst with dioxygen as the oxidant. A wide range of alcohols including inactive long-chain alkyl aryl alcohols undergo smoothly successive cleavage of adjacent -(C-C)n - bonds to afford the corresponding esters. The catalyst was used for seven times without any decrease in activity. Characterization and control experiments disclose that cobalt nanoparticles are responsible for the successive cleavage of C-C bonds to achieve excellent catalytic activity, while the presence of Co-Nx has just the opposite effect. Preliminary mechanistic studies reveal that a tandem sequence reaction is involved in this process.

Abstract
The preparation of carbonyl compounds by the aerobic oxidative cleavage of C-C bonds in 1,2-diols under mild reaction conditions is a very significant reaction and is widely employed in various scenarios. Avoiding the use of harmful stoichiometric oxidants and adopting a greener chemical process remain a challenge for this reaction to date. In this manuscript, a heterogeneous metal-free photocatalytic strategy without any additive was developed for aerobic oxidative cleavage of C-C bonds in 1,2-diols at ambient conditions with visible light. The reaction mechanism was further studied through a series of control experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. In addition, the catalytic system showed a broad substrates scope, including aliphatic (linear or cyclic) 1,2-diols, benzylic, alkenyl 1,2-diols, and α-hydroxy acids (such as lactic acid). Thus, this strategy could serve as a method for the transformation of 1,2-diols to corresponding carbonyl compounds by the aerobic oxidative cleavage of C-C bonds.

Abstract
Sodium hypochlorite pentahydrate (NaOCl·5H2O) can be used toward the efficient glycol cleavage of trans-cyclic glycols, which are generally resistant to this transformation. Interestingly, the reaction of cis-cyclic glycols with NaOCl·5H2O is slower than that observed for the corresponding trans-isomer. This trans selectivity is in sharp contrast to traditional oxidants used for glycol cleavage. Acyclic glycols can also react efficiently with NaOCl·5H2O to form their corresponding carbonyl compounds in high yield.

Abstract
Selective synthesis of various versatile compounds from biomass is of great importance to displace traditional fossil fuel resources. Here, homogeneous metal nitrate (M(NO3) x )/(2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-1-yl)oxyl (TEMPO) and M(NO3) x /TEMPO/NaNO2 catalyst systems in glacial acetic acid and acetonitrile, respectively, have been found to be highly active and practically sustainable for selective oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) into 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) using pure O2 or even O2 in air as the oxidant. The catalytic methods enable full HMF conversion with a nearly 100% DFF selectivity at 50 °C under atmospheric pressure using a very simple reaction setup and workup. Mechanistic aspects are discussed. The influences of reaction conditions such as different metal catalysts, catalyst loading, solvents, and reaction temperature on the promotion effect were studied. Meanwhile, the catalyst systems had also good performance for aerobic oxidation of other alcohols.
