Abstract
Nanoporous carbon-based membranes have garnered significant interest in gas separation processes owing to their distinct structure and properties. We have investigated the permeation and separation of the mixture of CO2 and CH4 gases through membranes formed by thin layers of porous graphdiyne (GDY) and boron graphdiyne (BGDY) using Density Functional Theory. The main goal is to investigate the effect of the pore size. The interaction of CO2 and CH4 with GDY and BGDY is weak, and this guarantees that those molecules will not be chemically trapped on the surface of the porous membranes. The permeation and separation of CO2 and CH4 through the membranes are significantly influenced by the size of the pores in the layers. The size of the hexagonal pores in BGDY is large in comparison to the size of the two molecules, and the passing of these molecules through the pores is easy because there is no barrier. Then, BGDY is not able to separate CO2 and CH4. In sharp contrast, the size of the triangular pores in GDY is smaller, comparable to the diameter of the two molecules, and this raises an activation barrier for the crossing of the molecules. The height of the barrier for CO2 is one half of that for CH4, the reason being that CO2 is a linear molecule which adopts an orientation perpendicular to the GDY layer to cross the pores, while CH4 has a spherical-like shape, and cannot profit from a favorable orientation. The calculated permeances favor the passing of CO2 through the GDY membrane, and the calculated selectivity for CO2/CH4 mixtures is large. This makes GDY a very promising membrane material for the purification of commercial gases and for the capture of the CO2 component in those gases.

Abstract
Efficiently reconciling the substantial volume strain with maintaining the stabilities of both interfacial protection and three-dimensional (3D) conductive networks is a scientific and technical challenge in developing tin-based anodes for sodium ion storage. To address this issue, a proof-of-concept self-adaptive protection for the Sn anode is designed, taking advantage of the arbitrary substrate growth of graphdiyne. This protective layer, employing a flexible chain doping strategy, combines the benefits of 2D graphdiyne and linear chain structures to achieve 2D mechanical stability, electronic and ion conductions, ion selectivity, adequate elongation, and flexibility. It establishes close contact with the Sn particles and can adapt to dynamic size changes while effectively facilitating both electronic and ion transports. It successfully mitigates the detrimental effects of particle pulverization and coarsening induced by large-volume changes. The as-obtained Sn electrodes demonstrate exceptional stability, enduring 1800 cycles at a high current density of 2.5 A g-1. This strategy promises to address the general issues associated with large-strain electrodes in next-generation of high-energy-density batteries.

Abstract
A strategy of microcrystalline aggregation is proposed to fabricate energy storage electrode with outstanding capacity and stability. Carbon-rich electrode (BDTG) functionalized with benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene units and butadiyne segments are prepared. The linear conjugate chains pack as microcrystalline nanofibers on nanoscale, which further aggregates to form a porous interpenetrating network. The microcrystalline aggregation feature of BDTG exhibit stable structure during long cycling test, revealing the following advantage in structure and property. The stretchable butadiyne linker facilitates reversible adsorption and desorption of Li with the aid of adjacent sulfur heteroatom. The alkyne-alkene transition exhibits intrinsic structural stability of microcrystalline region in BDTG electrodes. Meanwhile, alkynyl groups and sulfur heteroatoms on the surface of BDTG nanofibers participate in the formation of microscopic interface, providing a stable interfacial contact between BDTG electrodes and adjacent electrolyte. As a proof-of-concept, BDTG-based electrode shows high capacity (1430 mAh g-1 at 50 mA g-1) and excellent cycle performance (8000 cycles under 5 A g-1) in half-cell of lithium-ion batteries, and a reversible capacity of 120 mAh g-1 is obtained under the current density of 2 C in full-cell. This work shows microcrystalline aggregation is beneficial to realize adaptive intrinsic structure and interface contact during the charge-discharge process.

Abstract
A series of triarylboron-based graphdiyne analogues (TAB-GDYs) with tunable pore size were prepared through copper mediated coupling reaction. The elemental composition, chemical bond, morphology of TAB-GDYs were well characterized. The crystallinity was confirmed by selected area electron diffraction (SAED) and stacking modes were studied in combination with high resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) and structure simulation. The absorption and desorption isotherm revealed relatively high specific surface area of these TAB-GDYs up to 788 m2 g-1 for TMTAB-GDY, which decreased as pore size enlarged. TAB-GDYs exhibit certain selectivity for CO2 /N2 (21.9), CO2 /CH4 (5.3), CO2 /H2 (41.8) and C2 H2 /CO2 (2.3). This work has developed a series of boron containing two-dimensional frameworks with clear structures and good stability, and their tunable pore sizes have laid the foundation for future applications in the gas separation field.

Abstract
2D materials, such as graphene, MXenes (metal carbides and nitrides), graphdiyne (GDY), layered double hydroxides, and black phosphorus, are widely used as electrocatalyst supports for alcohol oxidation reactions (AORs) owing to their large surface area and unique 2D charge transport channels. Furthermore, the development of highly efficient electrocatalysts for AORs via tuning the structure of 2D support materials has recently become a hot area. This article provides a critical review on modification strategies to develop 2D material-based electrocatalysts for AOR. First, the principles and influencing factors of electrocatalytic oxidation of alcohols (such as methanol and ethanol) are introduced. Second, surface molecular functionalization, heteroatom doping, and composite hybridization are deeply discussed as the modification strategies to improve 2D material catalyst supports for AORs. Finally, the challenges and perspectives of 2D material-based electrocatalysts for AORs are outlined. This review will promote further efforts in the development of electrocatalysts for AORs.

Abstract
Controlling the structure and properties of catalysts through atomic arrangement is the source of producing a new generation of advanced catalysts. A highly active and stable catalyst in catalytic reactions strongly depends on an ideal arrangement structure of metal atoms. We demonstrated that the introduction of the defect-rich structures, low coordination number (CN), and tensile strain in three-dimensional (3D) urchin-like palladium nanoparticles through chlorine bonded with sp-C in graphdiyne (Pd-UNs/Cl-GDY) can regulate the arrangement of metal atoms in the palladium nanoparticles to form a special structure. In situ Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and theoretical calculation results show that Pd-UNs/Cl-GDY catalyst is beneficial to the oxidation and removal of CO intermediates. The Pd-UNs/Cl-GDY for methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) that display high current density (363.6 mA cm-2 ) and mass activity (3.6 A mgPd -1 ), 12.0 and 10.9 times higher than Pd nanoparticles, respectively. The Pd-UNs/Cl-GDY catalyst also exhibited robust stability with still retained 95 % activity after 2000 cycles. A defects libraries of the face-centered cubic and hexagonal close-packed crystal catalysts (FH-NPs) were synthesized by introducing chlorine in graphdiyne. Such defect-rich structures, low CN, and tensile strain tailoring methods have opened up a new way for the catalytic reaction of MOR.

Abstract
Graphdiyne (GDY) with a three-dimensional network structure was synthesized on a copper foam (CF) via an in situ Glaser-Hay coupling reaction. A metal-organic framework/GDY composite membrane was designed and synthesized for the first time. CF serves as a template and catalyst for the directed polymerization of GDY membranes. The catalytic activities of HKUST-1/GDY/CF membrane in wet peroxide oxidation of phenol, oxidation of benzyl alcohol, and ring opening of epoxide were studied. The composite membrane has the advantages of appropriateness for continuous operation, simple use process, easy recycling, high catalytic efficiency, etc. It was found that the incorporation of GDY can facilitate electron transfer and effectively improve the catalytic activity of HKUST-1 in membrane catalysis.

Carbon allotropes have contributed to all aspects of people's lives throughout human history. As emerging carbon-based low-dimensional materials, graphyne family members (GYF), represented by graphdiyne, have a wide range potential applications due to their superior physical and chemical properties. In particular, graphdiyne (GDY), as the leader of the graphyne family, has been practically applied to various research fields since it was first successfully synthesized. GYF have a large surface area, both sp and sp2 hybridization, and a certain band gap, which was considered to originate from the overlap of carbon 2pz orbitals and the inhomogeneous π-bonds of carbon atoms in different hybridization forms. These properties mean GYF-based materials still have many potential applications to be developed, especially in energy storage and catalytic utilization. Since most of the GYF have yet to be synthesized and applications of successfully synthesized GYF have not been developed for a long time, theoretical results in various application fields should be shared to experimentalists to attract more intentions. In this Review, we summarized and discussed the synthesis, structural properties, and applications of GYF-based materials from the theoretical insights, hoping to provide different viewpoints and comments.

Abstract
In this work, Fe@NC/B material is successfully synthesized and in-situ supported on the surface of amorphous boron (B) using a simple pyrolysis method. The interface between Fe species and B is improved by introducing N-doped carbon (NC) layers as intermediate, fast electron transfer from B to Fe@NC can therefore be achieved, thus could promote the fast redox cycle of Fe3+/Fe2+. The obtained material can therefore activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) effectively to degrade Bisphenol A (BPA), a fast degradation rate and a very long lifetime in a continous tubular reactor are realized. Moreover, experiments and DFT calculation indicate that Fe2+ containing species are the dominated active sites, while the exposed B atoms and structure defect of B can also activate PMS directly to produce SO4•- and 1O2 species for BPA degradation. In addition, boric acid is the oxidation product of B, which can be dissolved into the aqueous solution and expose fresh B species again for PMS activation. The combination of B with Fe@NC provide novel materials for long term PMS activation, thus could promote the real application of persulfates on an industrial scale.

Abstract
"Dynamic" behavior materials with high surface activity and the ability of chemical bond conversion are the frontier materials in the field of renewable energy. The outstanding feature of these materials is that they have adaptive electronic properties that external stimuli can adjust. An original discovery in a new crystalline two-dimensional phosphine-graphdiyne (P-GDY) material is described here. Although the p-π conjugation of most trivalent phosphorus π-systems is insignificant because of the pyramidal configuration, the lone pair electrons of phosphorus atoms participate strongly in the delocalization under the influence of the interlayer van der Waals forces in P-GDY. Due to the dynamically reversible nature of noncovalent interactions (p-π conjugation), P-GDY exhibits a specific adaptive behavior and realizes the responsive reversible transport of a lithium ion by regulating p-π interactions. Our findings would provide the potential to develop a new family of responsive materials with tunable structures.

Abstract
Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have emerged as well-known catalysts in renewable energy storage and conversion systems. Several supports have been developed for stabilizing single-atom catalytic sites, e.g., organic-, metal-, and carbonaceous matrices. Noticeably, the metal species and their local atomic coordination environments have a strong influence on the electrocatalytic capabilities of metal atom active centers. In particular, asymmetric atom electrocatalysts exhibit unique properties and an unexpected carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) performance different from those of traditional metal-N4 sites. This review summarizes the recent development of asymmetric atom sites for the CO2RR with emphasis on the coordination structure regulation strategies and their effects on CO2RR performance. Ultimately, several scientific possibilities are proffered with the aim of further expanding and deepening the advancement of asymmetric atom electrocatalysts for the CO2RR.

Abstract
An effective and original strategy described as two-dimensional encapsulation is designed to prepare a high-performance fluorinated carbon cathode composed of a fluorinated carbon/graphdiyne heterostructure (CFx/GDY). The GDY layers of CFx/GDY strengthened the three-dimensional contacts between the CFx particles and additive, achieving outstanding charge transport kinetics and accelerating the lithium-ion diffusion dynamic behavior. The obtained electrodes exhibited a significantly enhanced voltage platform of ∼2.5 V, improved battery rate performance (5C, 621.6 mA h g-1) and energy density with 2039.3 W h kg-1. The excellent storage kinetics can be ascribed to the electronic structure modulation of fluorinated carbon from GDY, and the hierarchical porosity of GDY to create an effective, stable electron transfer and robust ion transportation. Our results demonstrated that two-dimensional GDY encapsulation has enormous potential in improving the performance of lithium primary batteries.

Abstract
With a direct band gap, superior charge carrier mobility, and uniformly distributed pores, graphdiyne (GDY) has stimulated tremendous interest from the scientific community. However, its broad application is greatly limited by the complicated multistep synthesis process including complex deprotection of hexakis-[(trimethylsilyl)ethynyl]benzene (HEB-TMS) and peeling of GDY from the substrates. Here, we describe a deprotection-free strategy to prepare GDY powder by directly using HEB-TMS as the monomer. When CuCl was used as the catalysts in DMF solvent, the yield of GDY powder reached ≈100 %. More interestingly, uniformly dispersed CuO nanoparticles with an average diameter of ≈2.9 nm were in situ formed on GDY after the reaction. The prepared CuO/GDY was demonstrated an excellent co-catalyst for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution, comparable to the state-of-art Pt co-catalyst. The deprotection-free approach will widen the use of GDY and facilitate its scaling up to industrial level.

Abstract
Holey graphyne (HGY) is a recently synthesized two-dimensional semiconducting allotrope of carbon composed of a regular pattern of six- and eight-vertex carbon rings. In this study, based on first-principles density functional theory and molecular dynamics simulations, we predict a similar stable porous boron nitride holey graphyne-like structure that we call BN-holey-graphyne (BN-HGY). The dynamical and thermal stability of the structure at room temperature is confirmed by performing calculations of the phonon dispersion relations, and also ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. The BN-HGY structure has a wide direct band gap of 5.18 eV, which can be controllably tuned by substituting carbon, aluminum, silicon, and phosphorus atoms in place of sp and sp2 hybridized boron and nitrogen atoms of BN-HGY. We have also calculated the optical properties of the HGY and BN-HGY structures for the first time and found that the optical absorption spectra of these structures span the full visible region and a wide range of the ultraviolet region. We found that the Gibbs free energy of the BN-HGY structure for the hydrogen adsorption process is very close to zero (-0.04 eV) and, therefore, the BN-HGY structure can be utilized as a potential catalyst for the HER. Therefore, we propose that the boron nitride analog of holey graphyne can be synthesized, and it has a wide range of applications in nanoelectronics, optoelectronics, spintronics, ultraviolet lasers, and solar cell devices.

Abstract
Ferroptosis-apoptosis, a new modality of induced cell death dependent on reactive oxygen species, has drawn tremendous attention in the field of nanomedicine. A metal-free ferroptosis-apoptosis inducer was reported based on boron and nitrogen codoped graphdiyne (BN-GDY) that possesses efficient glutathione (GSH) depletion capability and concurrently induces ferroptosis by deactivation of GSH-dependent peroxidases 4 (GPX4) and apoptosis by downregulation of Bcl2. The high catalytic activity of BN-GDY is explicated by both kinetic experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations of Gibbs free energy change during hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) decomposition. In addition, a unique sequence Bi-Bi mechanism is discovered, which is distinct from the commonly reported ping-pong Bi-Bi mechanism of most peroxidase mimics and natural enzymes. We anticipate that this nonmetal ferroptosis-apoptosis therapeutic concept by carbon-based nanomaterials would provide proof-of-concept evidence for nanocatalytic medicines in cancer therapy.

Abstract
Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have gained tremendous attention for large-scale energy storage applications due to the natural abundance, low cost, and even geographic distribution of sodium resources as well as a similar working mechanism to lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). One of the critical bottlenecks, however, is the design of high-performance and low-cost anode materials. Graphite anode that has dominated the market share of LIBs does not properly intercalate sodium ions. However, other carbonaceous materials are still considered as one of the most promising anode materials for SIBs in virtue of their high electronic conductivity, abundant active sites, hierarchical porosity, and excellent mechanical stability. In this review, we have tried to summarize the latest progresses made on the development of carbon-based negative electrodes (including hard carbons, soft carbons, and synthetic carbon allotropes) for SIBs. We also have provided a comprehensive understanding of their physical properties, the sodium ions storage mechanisms, and the improvement measures to cope with the current challenges. In addition, we have proposed future research directions for SIBs that will provide important insights into further development of carbon-based materials for SIBs.

Abstract
The emergence of platinum-based catalysts promotes efficient methanol oxidation reactions (MOR). However, the defects of such noble metal catalysts are high cost, easy poisoning, and limited commercial applications. The efficient utilization of a low-cost, anti-poisoning catalyst has been expected. Here, it is skillfully used N-doped graphdiyne (NGDY) to prepare a zero-valent platinum atomic catalyst (Pt/NGDY), which shows excellent activity, high pH adaptability, and high CO tolerance for MOR. The Pt/NGDY electrocatalysts for MOR with specific activity 154.2 mA cm-2 (1449.3 mA mgPt -1 ), 29 mA cm-2 (296 mA mgPt -1 ) and 22 mA cm-2 (110 mA mgPt -1 ) in alkaline, acid, and neutral solutions. The specific activity of Pt/NGDY is 9 times larger than Pt/C in alkaline solution. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm that the incorporation of electronegativity nitrogen atoms can increase the high coverage of Pt to achieve a unique atomic state, in which the shared contributions of different Pt sites reach the balance between the electroactivity and the stability to guarantee the higher performance of MOR and durability with superior anti-poisoning effect.

Abstract
As a new member of carbon allotropes, graphdiyne (GDY) has the characteristics of being one-atom-thick with two-dimensional layers comprising sp and sp2 hybridized carbon atoms, and represents a trend in the development of carbon materials. Its unique chemical and electronic structures give GDY many unique and fascinating properties such as rich chemical bonds, highly conjugated and super-large π structures, infinitely distributed pores and high inhomogeneity of charge distribution. GDY has entered a period of rapid development, especially with the significant emergence of fundamental research and applied research achievements over the past five years. As one of the frontiers of chemistry and materials science, graphdiyne was listed in the Top 10 research areas in the 2020 Research Frontiers report and was jointly released in the Top 10 in the world by Clarivate and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The research results have shown the great potential of GDY in the applications of energy, catalysis, environmental science, electronic devices, detectors, biomedicine and therapy, etc. Scientists are eager to explore and fully reveal the new properties, discover new scientific concepts and phenomena, discover the new conversion modes and mechanisms of GDY in photoelectricity, energy, and catalysis, etc., and build the important scientific value of new conversion devices. This review covers research on the foundation and application of GDY, such as the controlled preparation of new methods of GDY and GDY-based materials, studies on new mechanisms and properties in chemistry and physics, and the foundation and applications in energy, catalysis, photoelectric and devices.

Abstract
Palladium is a late transition metal element in the 4d row of the periodic table. Palladium nanoparticles show efficient catalytic activity and selectivity in a number of chemical reactions. In this paper, we review the structural and electronic properties of palladium nanoclusters, both isolated and deposited on the surface of different substrates. Careful experiments and extensive calculations have been performed for small Pd clusters which provide ample information on their properties. Work on large Pd clusters is less abundant and more difficult to perform and interpret. Cluster deposition is a method to modify material surfaces for different applications, and we report the known results for the deposition of Pd clusters on the surfaces of a number of interesting substrates: carbonaceous substrates like graphene and some layered novel materials related to graphene, metal oxide substrates, silicon and silicon-related substrates and metallic alloy substrates. Emphasis is placed on revealing how the structural, electronic and magnetic properties change when the clusters are deposited on the substrate surfaces. Some examples of chemical reactions catalyzed by supported Pd clusters and nanoparticles are reported. An issue discussed in detail is the influence of Pd on the storage of hydrogen in porous materials. Experimental work shows that the amount of stored hydrogen increases when the absorbing material is doped with Pd atoms, clusters and nanoparticles, and a spillover mechanism from the metal particle to the substrate is usually accepted as the explanation. To shed light on this issue, a critical analysis based on density functional simulations of the mechanisms of hydrogen spillover in perfect and defective graphene doped with palladium clusters is presented.

Abstract
The conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) into organic carbonates under ambient temperatures and pressures with high conversion and selectivity still faces a great challenge. The zerovalent atomic catalysts (ACs), featuring accurate structure and valence states, provide a new and accurate model system for catalysis. Herein we developed a general preadsorption-reduction strategy to synthesize zerovalent cobalt AC on graphdiyne (Co0/GDY). The Co0/GDY ACs were used for efficient and selective CO2 fixation. We were surprised to find that Co0/GDY ACs reached nearly 100% conversion at 80 °C and 1 atm in CO2 fixation and with a significantly high turnover frequency (TOF) of 3024.8 h-1, which is almost several orders larger than that of benchmarked catalysts. Such high conversion and selectivity represent the advantages of emerging catalysts.

Abstract
Two-dimensional (2D) graphdiyne (GDY), a rapidly rising star on the horizon of carbon materials, is a new carbon allotrope featuring sp- and sp2 -cohybridized carbon atoms and 2D one-atom-thick network. Since the first successful synthesis of GDY by Professor Li's group in 2010, GDY has attached great interests from both scientific and industrial viewpoints based on its unique structure and physicochemical properties, which provides a fertile ground for applications in various fields including electrocatalysis, energy conversion, energy storage and optoelectronic devices. In this work, various potential properties of the GDY-based electrocatalysts and their recent advances in energy conversion are reviewed, including atomic catalysts, heterogeneous catalysts, and metal-free catalysts. The critical role of GDY in improving catalytic activity and stability is analyzed. The perspectives of the challenges and opportunities faced by GDY-based materials for energy conversion are also outlined.

Abstract
Supercapacitors possessing fast-charging characteristics and long lifespan are becoming increasingly important for powering portable and smart energy storage devices, and combining capacitive and battery-type materials into an integrated device is an effective method for increasing the overall performance of capacitors. Silicene is being designed as a cathode for the development of enhanced capacitance and ultra-cycle stable zinc-ion hybrid capacitors. Possessing a maximum areal capacity of 14 mF cm-2, a maximum power density of 9 mW cm-2, capacitance retention of 112% even after 10 000 cycles, and an unexpectedly high energy density of 23 mJ cm-2, this achievement of the zinc-ion hybrid capacitor would be superior to that of previously reported silicon-based supercapacitors. The DFT calculations further reveal that Zn ions dominate the capacitive behavior of the silicene electrode. The support association between silicene and zinc-ion hybrid capacitors so that they can take advantage of each other's strengths, which takes electrochemical energy technology to a stage, offering a straightforward proposal for integration and implementation of silicon-based materials.

Abstract
Moving beyond traditional 2D materials is now desirable in order to have switching capabilities (e.g., transistors). Here we propose using γ graphyne-n because, as shown in this paper, obtaining regions of the electronic band structure which act as valence and conduction bands, with an apparent bandgap, are found. Electron spatial density and electronic band structures with ε(k) vs. k are calculated for graphyne-1 and graphyne-2 having respectively, one and two triple C-C carbon-carbon bonds between adjoining benzene rings; such side by side comparisons never before done. The ab initio quantum calculations were performed using both the local density approximation (LDA) and the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) for density functional theory (DFT).

Abstract
Doping and its consequences on the electronic features, optoelectronic features, and magnetism of graphynes (GYs) are reviewed in this work. First, synthetic strategies that consider numerous chemically and dimensionally different structures are discussed. Simultaneous or subsequent doping with heteroatoms, controlling dimensions, applying strain, and applying external electric fields can serve as effective ways to modulate the band structure of these new sp2/sp allotropes of carbon. The fundamental band gap is crucially dependent on morphology, with low dimensional GYs displaying a broader band gap than their bulk counterparts. Accurately chosen precursors and synthesis conditions ensure complete control of the morphological, electronic, and physicochemical properties of resulting GY sheets as well as the distribution of dopants deposited on GY surfaces. The uniform and quantitative inclusion of non-metallic (B, Cl, N, O, or P) and metallic (Fe, Co, or Ni) elements into graphyne derivatives were theoretically and experimentally studied, which improved their electronic and magnetic properties as row systems or in heterojunction. The effect of heteroatoms associated with metallic impurities on the magnetic properties of GYs was investigated. Finally, the flexibility of doped GYs' electronic and magnetic features recommends them for new electronic and optoelectronic applications.

Abstract
The new carbon material graphdiyne (GDY) has been verified to have a great application prospect in electrochemical field. In order to study its properties and expand its scope of application, various experiments including structural control tests are imposed on GDY. Among them, as one of the most commonly used methods to modify the structure, heteroatom doping is favored for its advantages in synthesis methods and the control of mechanical, electrical and even magnetic properties of carbon materials. According to the published studies, the top-down methods of doping heteroatoms for GDY only need cheap raw materials, simple synthetic route and strong controllability, which is conducive to rapid performance breakthroughs in electrochemical applications. This review selects the typical cases in the development of that post-modification method from the application of GDY in the electrochemical field. Here, based on the existed reports, the commonly used non-metal elements (such as nitrogen, sulfur) and metal elements (such as iron) have been introduced to post-modify GDY. Then, a detailed analysis is made for corresponding electrochemical applications, such as energy storage and electrocatalysis. Finally, the challenges and prospects of post-modified GDY in synthesis and electrochemical applications are proposed. This review provides us a useful guidance for the development of high-quality GDY suitable for electrochemical applications.

Abstract
Heteroatom doping is regarded as a promising approach to enhance the electrochemical performance of carbon materials, while the poor controllability of heteroatoms remains the main challenge. In this context, sulfur-doped graphdiyne (S-GDY) was successfully synthesized on the surface of copper foil using a sulfur-containing multi-acetylene monomer to form a uniform film. The S-GDY film possesses a porous structure and abundant sulfur atoms decorated homogeneously in the carbon skeleton, which facilitate the fast diffusion and storage of lithium ions. The lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) fabricated with S-GDY as anode exhibit excellent performance, including the high specific capacity of 920 mA h g−1 and superior rate performances. The LIBs also show long-term cycling stability under the high current density. This result could potentially provide a modular design principle for the construction of high-performance anode materials for lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract
The efficient performance of metal-ion batteries strongly depends on electrode materials characteristics. Two-dimensional (2D) materials are among promising electrode materials for metal-ion battery cells, owing to their excellent structural and electronic properties. Two-dimensional graphdiyne has been recently fabricated and revealed unique storage capacities and fast charging rates. The current study explores the performance of the novel phosphorated-triphenylene graphdiyne (P-TpG) monolayer as an anode material for Li-, Na-, K-, Mg-, and Ca-ions storage via extensive density functional theory (DFT) simulations. Our results reveal that the stable structure of P-TpG monolayers delivers ultra-high storage capacities of ~2148, ~1696, ~1017, and ~2035 mA·h·g−1 for Li-, Na-, K-, and Ca- ions, respectively. Notably, the metallic electronic behavior is illustrated by adsorbing metal-ions on the P-TpG nanosheets, suggesting a good electronic conductivity. The NEB results demonstrate that P-TpG can serve as an outstanding candidate for the optimal charging/discharging process. This theoretical study suggests P-TpG nanosheets as a highly promising candidate for the design of advanced metal-ion batteries with remarkable charge capacities and optimal charging/discharging rates.

Abstract
Holey graphyne (HGY), a novel two-dimensional (2D) single-crystalline carbon allotrope, was recently synthesized by Castro-Stephens coupling reaction. The naturally existing uniform periodic holes in the 2D carbon-carbon network demonstrate its promising potential in energy storage. Herein, we conduct density functional theory (DFT) calculation and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations (AIMD) to predict the H storage properties of a single-layer HGY sheet modified by Li metal atoms. The DFT calculations demonstrate that Li atoms can bind strongly to the HGY sheet without forming clusters, and each Li atom can anchor four H2 molecules with an average adsorption energy of about -0.22 eV/H2. The largest H storage capacity of the doped HGY sheet can reach as high as 12.8 wt%, showing that the Li/HGY complex is an ideal H storage material at ambient conditions. In addition, we investigate the polarization mechanism of the storage media and find that the polarization originates from the electric field induced by both the ionic Li atoms and the weak polarized H2 molecules. Finally, the desorption mechanism of the adsorbed H2 molecules is thoroughly investigated using a kinetic AIMD method.

Abstract
Extension of conjugated polymers from 1D to 2D can not only significantly enhance the dissociation of charge and excitons, but also induce other advantages, such as high in-plane mechanical strength, large specific surface area and porosity, and more active centers. 2D conjugated polymers can be divided into C-C bonded 2D polymers based on C-C coupling reactions, and heteroatomic bonded 2D polymers based on reversible heteroatom coupling reactions. C-C bonded 2D polymers are generally more stable than heteroatomic bonded 2D polymers as the latter bonds are easily hydrolyzed. This Review mainly summarizes C-C coupling reactions that are suitable for synthesizing 2D conjugated polymers, and the properties of these 2D conjugated polymers are also introduced.

Abstract
Graphdiyne (GDY) is a two-dimensional (2D) electron-rich full-carbon planar material composed of sp2- and sp-hybridized carbon atoms, which features highly conjugated structures, uniformly distributed pores, tunable electronic characteristics and high specific surface areas. The synthesis strategy of GDY by facile coupling reactions under mild conditions provides more convenience for the functional modification of GDY and offers opportunities for realizing the special preparation of GDY according to the desired structure and unique properties. These structural characteristics and excellent physical and chemical properties of GDY have attracted increasing attention in the field of electrocatalysis. Herein, the research progress in the synthesis of atomic-level functionalized GDYs and their electrocatalytic applications are summarized. Special attention was paid to the research progress of metal-atom-anchored and nonmetallic-atom-doped GDYs for applications in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalytic processes. In addition, several potential development prospects and challenges of these 2D highly conjugated electron-rich full-carbon materials in the field of electrocatalysis are presented.

Abstract
In this work, by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, sp-sp2-hybridized boron-doped graphdiyne (BGDY) nanosheets have been investigated as an anode material for sodium storage. The density of states (DOS) and band structure plots show that substituting a boron atom with a carbon atom in an 18-atom unit cell converts the semiconductor pristine graphdiyne (GDY) to metallic BGDY. Also, our calculations indicate that, due to the presence of boron atoms, the adsorption energy of BGDY is more than that of GDY. The diffusion energy barrier calculations show that the boron atom in BGDY creates a more suitable path with a low energy barrier for sodium movement. This parameter is important in the rate of charge/discharge process. On the other hand, the projected density of states (PDOS) plots show that sodium is ionized when adsorbed on the electrode surface and so Na-BGDY interaction has an electrostatic character. This type of interaction is necessary for the reversibility of adsorption in the discharge mechanism. Finally, the calculation of the theoretical capacity shows an increase in BGDY (872.68 mAh g-1) in comparison with that in GDY (744 mAh g-1). Thus, from comparison of different evaluated parameters, it can be concluded that BGDY is a suitable anode material for sodium-ion batteries.

Abstract
The artificial synthesis of graphdiyne (GDY) in 2010 successfully fills the blank of low temperature preparation of all-carbon allotropes. GDY is an emerging two-dimensional (2D) planar carbon material composed of benzene rings moieties (sp2 carbon atoms), butadiyne (sp carbon atoms) linkers, and well dispersed electron-rich cavities, forming a large π-conjunction structure. GDY has attracted increasing attention in many fields. GDY is the first carbon material with both 2D fast transfer channels for electrons and 3D channels for ions. The 2D electron-rich all-carbon nature endows GDY with considerable conductivity and tunable electronic properties, and the in-plane cavities give it intrinsic selectivity and accessibility for electrochemically active metal ions. In addition, its easy preparation under mild conditions well complements the disadvantages of the traditional sp2-hybridized carbon materials (carbon nanotubes, graphene, and graphite) in the highly efficient synthesis and processing for potential electrochemical applications. As an all-carbon material, the unique advantages of GDY in both structure and preparation match well the urgent demands in key materials for solving many challenging problems in recent electrochemical areas and beyond. During the last decade since the first preparation of GDY, it has already achieved much enlightening and creative progress in both fundamental scientific research and forward-looking applications. This Account is intended not to summarize all this progress in preparation and applications but to outline some newly reported interesting phenomena in both high-quality preparation and electrochemical applications. This Account mainly discusses the recent progress in electrochemical applications: (i) constructing new concepts and new functions in electrochemical interfaces for realizing highly active electrochemical catalysts in the fields of water splitting and oxygen reduction reaction and (ii) building a highly stable conductive network and electrochemical interface for reversible energy storage. In the field of electrochemical catalysis, based on current studies of structural advantages and superior performance, atomic catalysis with metal atoms anchored in GDY is encouraging, owing to the desirable immobilizing capability of electron-rich dialkyne cavities toward metal atoms and corresponding electron transfer. For high-energy batteries, the in situ growth of the all-carbon GDY on the various battery electrodes shows great promise for solving key practical problems (safety, long lifespan, high power), which are ascribed to weak interfacial stability. In addition, the perspective application of GDY to broader interfacial modifications is described, bringing new choices for solving the interfacial challenges in various energy storage devices.

Abstract
A sulfur-rich graphdiyne (TTF-GDY) material containing electrochemically active unit of tetrathiafulvalene was successfully synthesized at the liquid/liquid interface under mild conditions. The extended two-dimensional (2D) π-conjugated framework contains large in-plane cavities to accommodate defined sulfur elements and precise sulfur content. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) characterizations demonstrated that the TTF-GDY adopted the layered structures. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectrum, selected area electron diffraction (SAED), crystal modeling, and molecular-mechanics-based calculation further confirmed the proposed framework structure and the expected chemical compositions. Considering the unique structure and sulfur-rich characteristic, we then applied this material as an electrode in lithium battery applications. Due to the unique 2D framework structure, the TTF-GDY exhibited a high specific capacity of 837.6 mAh/g, particularly having a robust long-term stability under the high current density. These results demonstrated that such a sulfur-rich TTF-GDY, as a novel electrochemical material would have great application potential in energy fields.
