Abstract
Herein, we report a catalyst-free reaction of cyclobutanone oximes with chlorophosphines (R2PCl), which forms a fragile C═N-O-PR2 species that undergoes N-O homolysis, fragmentation, and radical-radical coupling, leading to the formation of cyano-containing phosphine oxides in good yields. The reaction features an in situ activation of cyclobutanone oximes for radical generation, in which R2PCl plays a dual role as both an activator and a reactant.

Abstract
The ring-reorganizing transformations of activated cyclopropanes are typically achieved under acidic conditions. This Letter describes the first acid-free and Lewis base-mediated cascade ring opening/recyclization of designed cyclopropyl ketones to access tetrahydrofluorenones. We rationally merged the nucleophilic features of phosphines with the electronically biased cyclopropanes to synthesize several new classes of hydrofluorenones. We have also demonstrated the synthetic utility of the products in accessing highly functionalized molecular scaffolds.

Abstract
An unprecedented phosphine-catalyzed formal Buchner [6+1] annulation of a newly designed allenoate has been developed, providing a series of cycloheptatriene derivatives in moderate to good yields (up to 99%). This reaction demonstrates that the introduction of an electrophilic allylic group to allenoates effectively extends the reaction scope of phosphine-catalyzed annulation, providing a concise route to cycloheptatrienes. Mechanistic study indicated that this reaction involves a [4+2] Diels-Alder reaction and ring expansion of the bicyclo[4.1.0] moiety, which is similar to the Buchner reaction. Notably, an enantioselective variant of this [6+1] annulation can also be performed using a chiral iminophosphine catalyst.

Abstract
A series of γ-substituted Morita-Baylis-Hillman (MBH) carbonates were synthesized and subjected to phosphine-catalyzed annulations with electrophilic exocyclic alkenes, giving various valuable spirocyclopentenes in moderate to excellent yields with moderate to excellent diastereoselectivities. A large scope of MBH carbonates bearing γ-hydrogen, alkenyl, and alkynyl substituents was well tolerated. The annulation unprecedentedly involves β-, γ-, and δ-carbons of MBH carbonates.

Abstract
The annulation of a methylenecyclopropane with acyl cyanoalkenes by using DABCO or quinuclidine as a catalyst to give 2,3-dihydofurans has been developed. A stoichiometric amount of the Lewis bases promoted the isomerization of 2,3-dihydrofurans to furans. 1 H NMR spectra of the reaction in situ revealed that the methylenecyclopropane is opened by the Lewis base to form a reaction intermediate that is added to the cyanoalkenes.

Abstract
We report an operationally simple route to δ-valerolactones through an organophosphorus-catalyzed borylative ring-opening/allylation of vinylcyclopropanes providing δ-hydroxy esters stereoselectively. The δ-hydroxy esters were lactonized to obtain densely substituted δ-valerolactones. The present methodology exhibited enhanced functional group tolerance compared to the existing metal-mediated methods. A plausible mechanism for borylative ring-opening reaction has been suggested. 31P NMR studies indicated the involvement of a phosphonium zwitterionic species. The synthetic utility of the intermediate allyl boronates was demonstrated.

Abstract
Phosphoranyl radicals are essential mediators to bring about new radicals but often produce a stoichiometric amount of phosphine oxide/sulfide waste. Herein, we devised a phosphorus-containing species as a radical precursor, but without the generation of phosphorus waste. Accordingly, a catalyst-free synthesis of phosphinic amides from hydroxyl amines and chlorophosphines via P(III) to P(V) rearrangement is described. Mechanistically, it may involve the initial formation of a R2N-O-PR2 species that undergoes homolysis of N-O bonds and subsequent radical recombination.

Abstract
We herein report a phosphine-catalyzed (3 + 2) annulation of cyclopropenones with a wide variety of electrophilic π systems, including aldehydes, ketoesters, imines, isocyanates, and carbodiimides, offering products of butenolides, butyrolactams, maleimides, and iminomaleimides, respectively, in high yields with broad substrate scope. An α-ketenyl phosphorous ylide is validated as the key intermediate, which undergoes preferential catalytic cyclization with aldehydes rather than stoichiometric Wittig olefinations. This phosphine-catalyzed activation of cyclopropenones thus supplies a versatile C3 synthon for formal cycloadditon reactions.

Abstract
Phosphorodithioates are important substructures due to their great use in bioactive compounds and functional materials. A metal-free 1,5-addition of spirovinylcyclopropyl oxindoles have been developed by choosing P4S10 and alcohol as nucleophiles through the regioselective ring-opening of spirovinylcyclopropyl oxindoles. This method provides access to allylic organothiophosphates with high efficiency, wide functional group tolerance, good chemo- and regioselectivity, and E-selectivity. 1,3-Addition products were also prepared in high yield. Furthermore, the resulting organothiophosphates could be readily transformed into other allylic derivatives.

Abstract
An effective strategy for the ring-opening/elaboration of cyclopropanes by phosphine catalyst is documented, providing the 2,4-pentadiene sulfonamides and isoindolines in moderate to good yields. The key to the success of this reaction is phosphine-catalyzed introduction of a trigonal center into cyclopropanes, which results in the formation of higher ring strain cyclopropylidenemethyl phosphonium salt. Moreover, this methodology is employed as the key step for the synthesis of bioactive molecules.

Abstract
An efficient and practical phosphine-catalyzed homo-coupling reaction of benzyl chlorides is described. The reactions proceed smoothly in the presence of CsF/B(OMe)3 and NaH as the base, respectively, to provide trans-stilbenes in good yields with a broad scope. Unsymmetrical stilbenes are also generated from the reactions of benzyl chlorides with phosphonium salts. Several P-based key intermediates have been detected by NMR and HRMS analyses, which shed light on the postulated catalytic cycle. In the presence of different bases, the transformations involve two different pathways, in which phenylcarbene and phosphonium alkoxide are considered as key intermediates, respectively. The two pathways are complementary in synthesis but different in mechanisms. The synthetic utility, including gram-scale reactions and straightforward access to π-conjugated molecules, has been demonstrated as well.

Abstract
A visible-light-induced four-component reaction of vinylcyclopropanes, N-(acyloxy)phthalimide esters, N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), and H2O through an oxidative ring opening of cyclopropane is presented. This procedure provides a new and effective way to construct formate esters. DMF is employed as both a solvent and the source of CHO. This difunctionalization of vinylcyclopropanes shows good functional group tolerance under room temperature. A radical pathway is involved, and carbonyl oxygen of ester originated from water in this transformation.

Notably, this method makes use of vinylcyclopropanes as a synthon for phosphine-mediated asymmetric annulation reaction, which will offer new opportunities for potential applications of cyclopropanes substrates in phosphine-catalyzed organic transformations.

Abstract
Herein we describe a phosphine-catalyzed internal redox [4 + 2] annulation of 1,4-enynoates with electron-deficient alkenes, in which the γ- and φ-C(sp3)-H of the enynoates are formally oxidized for the annulation while the alkynyl moiety is converted to an alkene. The reaction offers an efficient synthesis of highly functionalized cyclohexenes in moderate to good yields with exclusive regioselectivity and high diastereoselectivity under mild conditions.

Abstract
An interesting type of reaction involving functionalized methylenecyclopropanes (MCPs) has been revealed. Here, a nucleophilic attack of an anionic species onto a partially polarity-reversed MCP was realized by treating a neighbouring carboxylic ester tethered to the MCP and amine with KHMDS to realize an umpolung ring opening of the MCP. This work established an operationally convenient protocol for the rapid construction of isoquinolinone frameworks.

Abstract
A phosphine-catalyzed olefinic cross-coupling between benzyl halides and fumarates is described, which affords trisubstituted alkenes in good yields and excellent E-selectivity under metal-free conditions. Mechanistic studies suggest a catalytic cycle involving phosphorus ylide formation, Michael addition, water-assisted hydrogen transfer, and phosphine elimination.

Abstract
Herein we describe a catalyst-free regioselective [3 + 3] annulation/oxidation reaction of cyclic amidines such as DBU (1,8-diazabicyclo(5.4.0)undec-7-ene) and DBN (1,5-diazabicyclo(4.3.0)non-5-ene) with activated olefins, i.e., 2-arylidenemalononitriles and 2-cyano-3-aryl acrylates, to afford tricyclic 2-pyridones and pyridin-2(1H)-imines, respectively. The mechanism has been proposed based on DFT calculations. In the reaction, the cyclic amidines serve as C,N-bisnucleophiles for the cyclization, while the olefins play a dual role by acting as both reactants and oxidants.

Abstract
Phosphorus-based organocatalysis encompasses several subfields that have undergone rapid growth in recent years. This Outlook gives an overview of its various aspects. In particular, we highlight key advances in three topics: nucleophilic phosphine catalysis, organophosphorus catalysis to bypass phosphine oxide waste, and organophosphorus compound-mediated single electron transfer processes. We briefly summarize five additional topics: chiral phosphoric acid catalysis, phosphine oxide Lewis base catalysis, iminophosphorane super base catalysis, phosphonium salt phase transfer catalysis, and frustrated Lewis pair catalysis. Although it is not catalytic in nature, we also discuss novel discoveries that are emerging in phosphorus(V) ligand coupling. We conclude with some ideas about the future of organophosphorus catalysis.

Abstract
An efficient general strategy for the synthesis of the Daphniphyllum alkaloids via the rapid construction of a common core intermediate has been established, based on which a divergent total synthesis of (-)-daphenylline and (-)-himalensine A has been accomplished in 16 and 19 steps, respectively. The present work features an enantioselective Mg(ClO4 )2 -catalyzed intramolecular amidocyclization to construct the aza-bridged core structure; a Cu-catalyzed intramolecular cyclopropanation and subsequent phosphine-catalyzed Cope-type rearrangement to furnish the himalensine A scaffold; and a one-pot Diels-Alder/aromatization method to assemble the aromatic skeleton of daphenylline.

Abstract
Herein we reported a novel phosphine-catalyzed (4 + 2) cyclization reaction of electron-deficient conjugated dienes with enones to generate functionalized dihydropyran skeletons. A mechanistic investigation reveals that the reaction produces a new phosphonium zwitterion, which undergoes consecutive reactions. In addition, an asymmetric variant was developed by efficient and economical chiral phosphine catalysis.

Abstract
The reactivity of allylic phosphorus ylides generated in situ from alkoxycarbonylmethylenephosphoranes and propiolates is investigated toward isocyanates and aromatic aldehydes, which leads to one-pot multicomponent benzannulations for efficient synthesis of polysubstituted anilines and biaryls, respectively. The mechanism may involve a tandem [2+2] cycloaddition/fragmentation/Wittig/cyclization/elimination/aromatization sequence.

Abstract
A three-component reaction between one molecule of phosphorus ylides (P-ylides) and two molecules of isocyanates for the rapid assembly of 2-amino-3-carboxylate-4-quinolones is described. The mechanism may involve the addition of a P-ylide to an isocyanate followed by 1,3-H shift to form a carbamoyl stabilized P-ylide. The intermediate then reacts with another aryl isocyanate via Wittig/ketenimine-ketene rearrangement/6π-electrocyclization/1,3-H shift to finally afford the 4-quinolones.

Abstract
We report a highly enantioselective [3 + 2] annulation between 3-butynoates and β-trifluoromethyl enones, furnishing trifluoromethylated cyclopentenes with three contiguous stereogenic centers in good yields, high diastereoselectivities, and excellent enantioselectivities. A unique catalytic system consisting of a simple amine and a chiral phosphine was devised, and the synergistic play of Lewis basic amine and phosphine was crucial for alkyne isomerization and subsequent cyclization. The protocol disclosed herein allows facile activation of 3-butynoates in phosphine-mediated asymmetric transformations.

Abstract
The title reaction is theoretically investigated in detail using density functional theory. Three possible routes starting from keto- or enol-type vinylcyclopropylketone are considered in this work. Results indicate that phosphine catalyst would first attack at the three-membered ring (C3 position) rather than the terminal of alkene (C1 position) in vinylcyclopropylketone. It is found that the two-stage mechanism would be responsible for the title reaction. The first stage is the SN2-type ring-opening of the keto-type vinylcyclopropylketone with phosphine catalyst. After the proton-transfer tautomerisms in the zwitterionic intermediates, the second stage is associated with the 7-endo-trig SN2'-type ring closure of keto- or enol-type zwitterions to furnish seven-membered cyclic products and recover the catalyst. Moreover, it turns out that 7-endo-trig SN2'-type ring closure would be highly asynchronous and could be well described as an addition/elimination process where the ring closure already finishes before the cleavage of the C-P bond. Computational results provide a deep insight into experimental observations.
