The Curious Case of a Parasitic Twin of the Corroles

Synthesis of Pyrrole-Sharing Fused Porphyrinoid Hybrids by Post-fabrication of Ni(II) Porphyrins

Pyrrole-sharing fused hybrids of NiII porphyrin with PdII N-confused(NC)-corrole and PdII NC-oxaporphyrin were synthesized by post-fabrication of NiII porphyrins. Specifically this consists of Friedel-Crafts type aromatic substitution reaction of meso-free NiII porphyrin with α,α'-dibromotripyrrin and Pd(OAc)2 assisted cyclization, and final heating to induce a Pd-C bond formation. NiII porphyrins fused with PdII NC-corrole and with PdII NC-oxaporphyrins show coplanar structures with a shared pyrrole unit. In these hybrids, the PdII NC-oxaporphyrin is aromatic and the PdII NC-corrole is moderately antiaromatic and these local electronic properties interact to influence the whole network.

Anthracene-Fused Oligo-BODIPYs: A New Class of π-Extended NIR-Absorbing Materials

Large π-conjugated systems are key in the area of molecular materials. Herein, we prepare via Au^I -catalyzed cyclization a series of fully π-conjugated anthracene-fused oligo-BODIPYs. Their structural and optoelectronic properties were studied by several techniques, ranging from X-ray, UV/Vis, and cyclic voltammetry to transient absorption spectroscopy. As a complement, their electronic structures were explored by means of Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations. Depending on the size and shape of the π-conjugated skeleton, unique features-such as face-to-face supramolecular organization, NIR absorption and fluorescence as well as strong electron accepting character-were noted. All in all, the aforementioned features render them valuable for technological applications.

Recent Advances in Heterocyclic Nanographenes and Other Polycyclic Heteroaromatic Compounds

This review surveys recent progress in the chemistry of polycyclic heteroaromatic molecules with a focus on structural diversity and synthetic methodology. The article covers literature published during the period of 2016-2020, providing an update to our first review of this topic (Chem. Rev. 2017, 117 (4), 3479-3716).

Confusion Approach Modulated Syntheses of Corrorin Parasitized Hexaphyrins(1.1.1.1.1.0) and the Oxidative Ring Cleavage Behavior

A corrorin parasitized hexaphyrin(1.1.1.1.1.0) 1 was synthesized by [4 + 4] condensation, and subsequent treatment with PbO₂ afforded hexaphyrin 2 appended with a dipyrrinone moiety via regioselective opening of the corrorin ring. In contrast, oxidation of the corresponding corrorin-N-confused hexaphyrin(1.1.1.1.1.0) hybrid 3 afforded only a keto adduct 4. As a result, the planarity and aromaticity of the hexaphyrin moiety can be modulated.

(Aza)Acenes Share the C2 Bridge with (Anti)Aromatic Macrocycles: Local vs. Global Delocalization Paths

A strong conjugation present in fused systems plays a crucial role in tuning of the properties that would be showing a dependence on the efficiency of π-electrons coupling. The π-cloud available in the final structure can be drastically influenced by a side- or a linear fusion of unsaturated and conjugated hydrocarbons. The linear welding of naphthalene/anthracene or quinoxaline/benzo[g]quinoxaline with triphyrin(2.1.1) gives structures where the competition between local and global delocalization is distinguished. The aromatic character observed in skeletons strongly depends on the oxidation state of the macrocyclic flanking and is either extended over the whole system or kept as a composition of local currents (diatropic and paratropic) of incorporated units. The hybrid systems show the properties derived from the π-conjugations that interlace one another but also show a significant independence of (aza)acene subunits reflected in the observed spectroscopic properties.

Corroles and Hexaphyrins: Synthesis and Application in Cancer Photodynamic Therapy

Corroles and hexaphyrins are porphyrinoids with great potential for diverse applications. Like porphyrins, many of their applications are based on their unique capability to interact with light, i.e., based on their photophysical properties. Corroles have intense absorptions in the low-energy region of the uv-vis, while hexaphyrins have the capability to absorb light in the near-infrared (NIR) region, presenting photophysical features which are complementary to those of porphyrins. Despite the increasing interest in corroles and hexaphyrins in recent years, the full potential of both classes of compounds, regarding biological applications, has been hampered by their challenging synthesis. Herein, recent developments in the synthesis of corroles and hexaphyrins are reviewed, highlighting their potential application in photodynamic therapy.

Enhanced Synthetic Access to Tris-CF3-Substituted Corroles

Separate focus on the oligomerization and oxidative cyclization steps required for the synthesis of 5,10,15-tris(trifluoromethyl)corrole revealed [bis(trifluoroacetoxy)iodo]benzene (PIFA) as a superior alternative oxidant. Under optimized conditions, the pure free-base corrole was obtained with a 6-fold increase in chemical yield and an 11-fold rise in isolated material per synthesis. The corresponding gallium(III) and manganese(III) complexes were isolated by adding the appropriate metal salt prior to corrole purification.

Organoboron Complexes in Edge-Sharing Macrocycles: The Triphyrin(2.1.1)-Tetraphyrin(1.1.1.1) Hybrid

The formation of a precisely designed environment predefined for stabilizing electron-deficient atoms, such as boron(III), is an important approach for optimizing the properties of a chromophore. A triphyrin(2.1.1) motif built on the extended π-system of a tetraphyrin(1.1.1.1) skeleton creates a new coordination environment, with a CNN set of donors confined in a limited space predefined for binding small cations. The entrapment of boron(III) in the triphyrin(2.1.1) sector, with formation of a direct B-C bond, significantly changes the optical response and the global aromatic character of the compound, leading to an extension of the π-delocalisation.
