A new dicyanophenanthrene-based thermally activated delayed fluorophore: Design, synthesis, photophysical study, and electroluminescence application

A novel thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitter, DCNP-SCF, is developed based on a dicyanophenanthrene acceptor. DCNP-SCF is prepared by a simple C-N coupling reaction. Its thermal, theoretical, photophysical, and electroluminescent properties are investigated, emphasizing its potential in organic electroluminescence devices. DCNP-SCF demonstrates highly distorted donor-acceptor conformation, facilitating significant TADF for efficient triplet harvesting in electroluminescence devices. Additionally, due to the moderate electron push-pull effect, DCNP-SCF exhibits appropriate intramolecular charge transfer for considerable photoluminescence quantum yield for electroluminescence applications.

Excited-State Dynamics of a Bright Fluorescent Dye with Precise Control of Emission Color Using Acid-Base Equilibrium, Intramolecular Charge Transfer, and Host-Guest Chemistry

A fluorescent dye, a dithiophene-conjugated benzothiazole derivative (DTBz), was prepared to have high fluorescence emission quantum yields (ΦF) across various organic solvents. Its emission color modulation, from bright blue to deep red, was achieved through intramolecular charge transfer (ICT), acid-base equilibrium, and host-guest chemistry. Although it exhibits a weak solvatochromic effect, DTBz exhibited a bright fluorescence emission around 480 nm upon excitation at 390 nm in most solvents. In polar solvents, such as MeOH (methanol), EtOH (ethanol), DMF (N,N-dimethylforamide), and DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide), an additional ICT emission band emerged around 640 nm, notably intense in DMSO, resulting in a bright greenish-white emission (ΦF = 0.67). The addition of 1,8-diazabicyclo[5,4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU) altered emission characteristics, reducing emission from the local excited (LE) state and enhancing ICT state emission. The degree of emission spectral change saturation with DBU addition varied with the solvent nature. Polar solvents with high dielectric constants, like DMSO and DMF, saw a complete disappearance of LE state emission with 5 equiv of DBU, resulting in a deep red emission (ΦFs of 0.53 and 0.48, respectively). Femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy and time-resolved photoluminescence measurements elucidated the excited-state dynamics, revealing a long-lived excited state (τ-H = 10.3 ns) at a lower energy emission (640 nm), identified as DTBz-*, supported by transient absorption spectra analysis. Further analysis, including time-resolved fluorescence decay measurements and time-dependent density-functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations, underscored the role of deprotonation of DTBz's hydroxyl group in promoting the ICT process. The CIE coordination plot demonstrated wide linear emission color changes upon successive DBU additions in all solvents, while emission color precision was achieved through host-guest chemistry. Emission changes induced by DBU were reverted to the original state upon beta-cyclodextrin (β-CD) addition, with the 1H NMR study revealing the competition between acid-base equilibrium and host-guest complex formation as the cause of emission color change.

Aggregation Enhanced Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence through Spin-Orbit Coupling Regulation

Integrating aggregation-induced emission (AIE) into thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters holds great promise for the advancement of highly efficient organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). Despite recent advancements, a thorough comprehension of the underlying mechanisms remains imperative for the practical application of such materials. In this work, we introduce a novel approach aimed at modulating the TADF process by manipulating dynamic processes in excited states through aggregation effect. Our findings reveal that aggregation not only enhances both prompt and delayed fluorescence simultaneously but also imposes constraints on molecular reorientation. This constraint reinforces spin-orbit coupling and reduces the energy gap between singlets and triplets. These insights deepen our understanding of the fundamental mechanisms governing the aggregation effect on TADF materials and provide valuable guidance for the design of high-efficiency photoluminescent materials.

Dual-Stimuli-Responsive Modulation Organic Afterglow Based on N─H Proton Migration Mechanism

Organic afterglow materials have significant applications in information security and flexible electronic devices with unique optical properties. It is vital but challenging to develop organic afterglow materials possessing controlled output with multi-stimuli-responsive capacity. Herein, dimethyl terephthalate (DTT) is introduced as a strong proton acceptor. The migration direction of N─H protons on two compounds Hs can be regulated by altering the excitation wavelength (Ex) or amine stimulation, thereby achieving dual-stimuli-responsive afterglow emission. When the Ex is below 300 nm, protons migrate to S1-2 DTT, where strong interactions induce phosphorescent emission of Hs, resulting in afterglow behavior. Conversely, when the Ex is above 300 nm, protons interact with the S0 DTT weakly and the afterglow disappears. In view of amine-based compounds with higher proton accepting capabilities, it can snatch proton from S1-2 DTT and redirect the proton flow toward amine, effectively suppressing the afterglow but obtaining a new redshifted fluorescence emission with Δλ over 200 nm due to the high polarity of amine. Moreover, it is successfully demonstrated that the applications of dual-stimuli-responsive organic afterglow materials in information encryption based on the systematic excitation-wavelength-dependent (Ex-De) behavior and amine selectivity detection.

Solid-Emission-Tunable Squaraine with Thermal-Promoted Aggregate-State Transitions for Fast Thermal History Sensing

Determining thermal history is crucial in many industrial processes, but reliable and sensitive organic thermal history indicators are currently absent. Herein, we report on the development of a squaraine-based fluorescent molecule, DPEA-SQ, for the detection of thermal exposure histories up to 436 K. DPEA-SQ forms multiple single crystals (DPEA-SQ-I, DPEA-SQ-II, and DPEA-SQ-III) with different conformations and aggregate-state packing modes, contributing to their different fluorescence wavelengths, lifetimes, and efficiencies. Interestingly, DPEA-SQ-I and DPEA-SQ-III undergo aggregate-state structural transitions to form the thermodynamically more stable DPEA-SQ-II, which are accompanied by changes in their fluorescence. By taking advantage of similar aggregate-state structural transformations during heating, a high-temperature thermal exposure history of up to 436 K is recorded and reflected by their fluorescence. To demonstrate the potential practical applications of DPEA-SQ, a DPEA-SQ-Powder/PDMS film is prepared and coated on an electric circuit board, which enables real-time monitoring of localized overheating by the naked eye. Additionally, the fluorescence peaks of DPEA-SQ-Powder and DPEA-SQ-Powder/PDMS films remain unchanged after storage at 373 K for 52 days, demonstrating high aggregate-state stability. The fast and reliable responses of this system make it an excellent candidate for the detection of overtemperature traces in electronic components and circuit diagnosis.

Polymorphism Dependent Cytotoxicity, Cellular Uptake, and Live Cell Imaging Studies on Napthalimide-Vinyl-Phenothiazine Conjugate

Polymorphism-dependent cytotoxicity and cellular uptake of drug molecules have been studied for the past two decades. However, the visualization of polymorph-dependent cellular uptake and cytotoxicity using microscopy imaging techniques has not yet been reported. The luminescent polymorph is an ideal candidate to validate the above hypothesis. Herein, we report the polymorph-dependent cellular uptake, cytotoxicity, and bio-imaging functions of polymorphs 1Y and 1R of a naphthalimide-phenothiazine dyad. These polymorphs show different luminescence colors in the solid state and exhibit aggregation-induced enhanced emission (AIEE) in the DMSO-Water mixture. Bioimaging, cytotoxicity assay, and fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) studies revealed that these polymorphs show different levels of cytotoxicity, cellular uptake, localization, and imaging potential. Detailed photophysical, morphological, and biological studies revealed that the difference in molecular conformation in these polymorphs enables them to form aggregates of different sizes and morphology, which leads to the differential uptake of these into the cells and consequently shows different cytotoxicity and imaging potentials.

Stimuli-fluorochromic smart organic materials

Smart materials based on stimuli-fluorochromic π-conjugated solids (SFCSs) have aroused significant interest due to their versatile and exciting properties, leading to advanced applications. In this review, we highlight the recent developments in SFCS-based smart materials, expanding beyond organometallic compounds and light-responsive organic luminescent materials, with a discussion on the design strategies, exciting properties and stimuli-fluorochromic mechanisms along with their potential applications in the exciting fields of encryption, sensors, data storage, display, green printing, etc. The review comprehensively covers single-component and multi-component SFCSs as well as their stimuli-fluorochromic behaviors under external stimuli. We also provide insights into current achievements, limitations, and major challenges as well as future opportunities, aiming to inspire further investigation in this field in the near future. We expect this review to inspire more innovative research on SFCSs and their advanced applications so as to promote further development of smart materials and devices.

Sulphur-induced structural rearrangement in the self-sensitization photo-oxidation behaviour of phenothiazine-imidazole molecules

A green photo-oxidation reaction was discovered in which the imidazole ring is oxidized and rearranged to generate imidazolinone derivatives with thermal activation delayed fluorescence properties. The excellent photo-oxidation properties of p-PTZ-PIM can be utilized for detecting trace oxygen in the water phase and the sealing of food packaging bags.

A Pair of Multifunctional Cu(II)-Dy(III) Enantiomers with Zero-Field Single-Molecule Magnet Behaviors, Proton Conduction Properties and Magneto-Optical Faraday Effects

Multifunctional materials with a coexistence of proton conduction properties, single-molecule magnet (SMM) behaviors and magneto-optical Faraday effects have rarely been reported. Herein, a new pair of Cu(II)-Dy(III) enantiomers, [DyCu2(RR/SS-H2L)2(H2O)4(NO3)2]·(NO3)·(H2O) (R-1 and S-1) (H4L = [RR/SS] -N,N'-bis [3-hydroxysalicylidene] -1,2-cyclohexanediamine), has been designed and prepared using homochiral Schiff-base ligands. R-1 and S-1 contain linear Cu(II)-Dy(III)-Cu(II) trinuclear units and possess 1D stacking channels within their supramolecular networks. R-1 and S-1 display chiral optical activity and strong magneto-optical Faraday effects. Moreover, R-1 shows a zero-field SMM behavior. In addition, R-1 demonstrates humidity- and temperature-dependent proton conductivity with optimal values of 1.34 × 10-4 S·cm-1 under 50 °C and 98% relative humidity (RH), which is related to a 1D extended H-bonded chain constructed by water molecules, nitrate and phenol groups of the RR-H2L ligand.

Uncovering the substituted-position effect on excited-state evolution of benzophenone-phenothiazine dyads

Photofunctional materials based on donor-acceptor molecules have drawn intense attention due to their unique optical properties. Importantly, Systematic investigation of substitution effects on excited-state charge transfer dynamics of donor-acceptor molecules is a powerful approach for identifying application-relevant design principles. Here, by coupling phenothiazine (PTZ) at the ortho-, meta-, and para-positions of the benzene ring of benzophenone (BP), three regioisomeric BP-PTZ dyads were designed to understand the relationship between substituted positions and excited-state evolution channels. Ultrafast transient absorption is used to detect and trace the transient species and related evolution channels of BP-PTZ dyads at excited state. In a non-polar solvent, BP-o-PTZ undergoes the through-space charge transfer process to produce a singlet charge-transfer (1CT) state, which subsequently proceeds the intersystem crossing process and transforms into a triplet charge-transfer (3CT) state; BP-m-PTZ experiences intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) process to generate the 1CT state, which subsequently transforms into the 3CT state by the intersystem crossing (ISC) and finally converts into the local-excited triplet (3LE) state; as for BP-p-PTZ, only 3LE states can be detected after the ISC process from the 1CT state. On the other hand, the twisted ICT states are generated via twisted motion between the donor and acceptor for all BP-PTZ dyads or planarization of the PTZ unit in high polar solvents. The excited-state theoretical calculations unveil that the features of ICT and intramolecular interaction between the three dyads play a decisive role in determining the through-bond charge transfer and through-space charge transfer processes. Also, these results demonstrate that the excited-state evolution channels of PTZ derivatives could be modified by tuning the substituted positions of the donor-acceptor dyads. This study provides a deep perspective for the substitute-position effect on donor-acceptor-type PTZ derivatives.

Multifunctional behavior of a carbazole derivative: Red phosphorescent emission, aggregation-induced long-life exciton and light-emitting diode application

A D-π-A typed cyanyl-carboxylic derivative (named as CECZA) merely produced prompt fluorescence with lifetime at nanosceond scale in dilute solutions, whose solid-state luminescence exhibited 3.36 μs lifetime with 13.80 % quantum yield (QY, captured at 522 nm for powder at nanometer scale) at 298 K and 43.36 ms lifetime with 30.46 % QY (650 nm, 80 K, tiny crystals). Femtosecond transient absorption, Raman spectroscopy and quantum chemical calculation provided valid clues to reveal its excitonic transition mechanism. The results indicated that the restricted vibration of benzene ring on carbazole group and alkyl chain weakened the vibrational modes of CECZA molecule and strengthened inter-molecular interactions between adjacent molecules at low temperatures, which promoted the persistent phosphorescent emission. Due to strong UV-vis absorption, high quantum efficiency and excellent thermal stability, CECZA can be used as a potential candidate in light-emitting diode (LED) application. Combined with a commercial InGaN blue-emitting chip, CECZA-InGaN emitted daylight white light.

Detection of the Dark States in Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence (TADF) Process of Electron Donor-Acceptor Dyads: Insights from Optical Transient Absorption Spectroscopy

The photophysical processes involved in the electron donor-acceptor thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters are complicated and controversial. The recent consensus is that at least three states are involved, i. e. the singlet charge transfer state (¹ CT), the triplet localized excited state (³ LE) and the triplet CT state (³ CT). It is clear the very often used steady state and time-resolved luminescence spectroscopic methods are unable to present direct evidence for the dark states, i. e. the ³ LE and ³ CT states, as well as the interconversion of these states. Concerning this aspect, the femtosecond-nanosecond transient absorption spectroscopic methods are in particular interests. Both the emissive state and the dark state can be detected in these spectra, and interconversion of the states involved in TADF process can be also revealed. This review article focuses on the recent development of using the transient absorption spectra to study the photophysics of the TADF emitters.

Adsorption of Dye Molecules and Its Potential for the Development of Photoactive Hybrid Materials Based on Layered Silicates

The present paper gives a brief account of the latest advances in understanding of the mechanism and implications of dye adsorption with a special focus on layered silicate surfaces. It has been clearly demonstrated that the controlled adsorption of novel or already well-known dyes has equally great yet unexplored potential. In principle, the well-engineered surface confinement of the molecules may lead to their aggregation, adsorption, or intercalation-induced fluorescence emission even with conventional dyes, which are not considered as luminophores in solutions or in the solid state. We envision the utilization of silicate-based heterogeneous systems to produce novel polymer blended films or structured liquids, as well as to develop a plethora of other photophysical and biomedical applications.

Dynamic B/N Lewis Pairs: Insights into the Structural Variations and Photochromism via Light-Induced Fluorescence to Phosphorescence Switching

Ultralong afterglow emissions due to room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) are of paramount importance in the advancement of smart sensors, bioimaging and light-emitting devices. We herein present an efficient approach to achieve rarely accessible phosphorescence of heavy atom-free organoboranes via photochemical switching of sterically tunable fluorescent Lewis pairs (LPs). LPs are widely applied in and well-known for their outstanding performance in catalysis and supramolecular soft materials but have not thus far been exploited to develop photo-responsive RTP materials. The intramolecular LP M1BNM not only shows a dynamic response to thermal treatment due to reversible N→B coordination but crystals of M1BNM also undergo rapid photochromic switching. As a result, unusual emission switching from short-lived fluorescence to long-lived phosphorescence (rad-M1BNM, τ_RTP =232 ms) is observed. The reported discoveries in the field of Lewis pairs chemistry offer important insights into their structural dynamics, while also pointing to new opportunities for photoactive materials with implications for fast responsive detectors.

Optimal Dihedral Angle in Twisted Donor-Acceptor Organic Emitters for Maximized Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence

The twisted donor-acceptor (D-A) organic formwork with a large dihedral angle (θ_DA ) is usually adopted to narrow the singlet-triplet energy gap for obtaining excellent thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters. However, the dependence of overall TADF properties on θ_DA has not been systematically investigated to this day. Taking new designed CzBP, CzBP-1M and CzBP-2M via introducing methyl as investigated models, it is found that (i) with increasing θ_DA , the charge transfer component in S₁ is larger than that in T₁ in varying degrees, leading to non-monotonic spin-orbit couplings; (ii) the electron-vibration couplings between S₁ and T₁ states become the largest when θ_DA approaching 80°, facilitating phonon-driven up-conversion; (iii) the overall TADF rate reaches a peak at θ_DA ≈80°. By this, the TADF on/off switching is realized via methyl moiety for regulating θ_DA from theoretical prediction to experimental confirmation. Importantly, the θ_DA near 80° would be a good descriptor for screening excellent D-A type TADF emitters.

A simple molecular design towards the conversion of a MCL backbone to a multifunctional emitter exhibiting polymorphism, AIE, TADF and MCL

Compared with the large number of single-function materials such as aggregation-induced emission (AIE), mechanochromic luminescence (MCL), or thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters, multifunctional emitting materials offer more opportunities in practical applications. In this report, we provide a simple molecular design strategy towards the conversion of a MCL building block to a multifunctional emitter. Through altering the substituent sites and increasing the number of electron donors and steric hindrance on a normal MCL backbone benzo[d,e]benzo[4,5]imidazo[2,1-a]isoquinolin-7-one, a novel multifunctional material 10,11-bis-(4-diphenylamino-phenyl)-benzo[d,e]benzo[4,5]imidazo[2,1-a]isoquinolin-7-one (10,11-2TPA-BBI) is designed and synthesized. 10,11-2TPA-BBI exhibits simultaneous polymorphism, AIE, MCL and TADF properties. It can form four different aggregate species: yellow solid (YS) and orange solid (OS), orange flake-shaped crystal (OC), and red prism-like crystal (RC). Among them, because of the small energy gaps (ΔE_STs < 0.3 eV) between the singlet and triplet excited states, OS, OC and RC exhibit TADF properties, while YS show normal fluorescence characteristics with a large ΔE_ST of 0.33 eV. OS can be reversibly transformed into YS upon external stimuli, which can be attributed to the emission switch between local excited state and charge transfer state. Crystallographic study indicates that the bulky structure and weak intermolecular interactions account for polymorphism and AIE properties. This work will provide a simple molecular design strategy for multifunctional materials.

Highly Efficient Sky-Blue π-Stacked Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Emitter with Multi-Stimulus Response Properties

Organic materials with multi-stimulus response (MSR) properties have demonstrated many potential and practical applications. Herein, a π-stacked thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) material with multi-stimulus response (MSR) properties, named SDMAC, was designed and synthesized using distorted 9,9-dimethyl-10-phenyl-9,10-dihydroacridine as a donor. SDMAC possesses a rigid π-stacked configuration with intramolecular through-space interactions and exhibits aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE), solvatochromic, piezochromic, and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) under different external stimuli. The rigid molecular structure and efficient TADF properties of SDMAC can be used in displays and lighting. Using SDMAC as an emitter, the maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of the fabricated organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) is as high as 28.4 %, which make them the most efficient CP-TADF OLEDs based on the through-space charge transfer strategy. The CP organic light-emitting diodes (CP-OLEDs) exhibit circularly polarized electroluminescence (CPEL) signals.

Insight into the Clustering-Triggered Emission and Aggregation-Induced Emission Exhibited by an Adamantane-Based Molecular System

Chemical clustering of a nonemissive and non-AIEgen of Cb-Ph endowed a molecular system (Ad-4CP) with unique dual emissions in the solution state, a typical clustering-triggered emission (CTE), and high emission efficiency in the aggregated state, an aggregation-induced emission (AIE). The CTE was ascribed to intramolecular charge transfer (CT); however, the AIE was ascribed to both intra- and intermolecular CTs. The two-level CTs make the Ad-4CP exhibit remarkable excitation-dependent emissions. We believe that the present work not only delivers a peculiar molecular system with both CTE and AIE properties but also provides an example on how molecular engineering promotes the rational design of CTE and AIE systems via clusterization of suitable structural units.

Long-Lived Triplet Charge Separated State and Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence in a Compact Orthogonal Anthraquinone-Phenothiazine Electron Donor-Acceptor Dyad

A long-lived triplet charge separated state (³CS state lifetime: 0.56 μs) was observed in a compact electron donor-acceptor dyad with electron donor phenothiazine (PTZ) and acceptor anthraquinone (AQ) directly connected by a single C-N bond (AQ-PTZ). The ¹CS state energy (2.0 eV in cyclohexane) is lower than those of the ³AQ (2.7 eV) or the ³PTZ state (2.6 eV). By oxidation of the PTZ unit, thus increasing of the ¹CS state energy (2.7 eV in cyclohexane), thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) was observed [τ = 17.7 ns (99.9%)/1.5 μs (0.1%)]. Time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance (TREPR) spectra confirm the electron spin multiplicity of the ³CS state, and the zero-field-splitting (ZFS) parameters |D| and |E| are 48.2 mT and 11.2 mT, respectively. These results are useful for design of compact electron donor-acceptor dyads to access the long-lived ³CS state and study the TADF mechanism.

A Tri-state Fluorescent Switch with "Gated" Solid-state Photochromism Induced by an External Force

Mr. Chen Qian, Dr. Zhimin Ma, Mr. Jianwei Liu, Mrs. Xue Zhang, Prof. Shitao Wang and Prof. Zhiyong Ma. In this article, we report a newly designed molecule composed of a dihydroazulene (DHA) group and a phenothiazine (PTZ) moiety, which achieves aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE), mechanochromism and "gated" solid-state photochromism upon stimulation by an external force. Grinding loosens intermolecular interactions in the crystal and causes a red-shift of fluorescence from 570 nm to 600 nm. Meanwhile, the ring-opening reaction of DHA unit is activated by grinding and a remarkable photochromism could be observed from the grinded powder. The reddish emission of the grinded powder peaked at 600 nm weakened gradually and finally became dark, and a new absorption band at 470 nm emerged in the absorption spectra. Time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculation results reveal that the intramolecular intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT) process is replaced by a locally excited (LE) emission on the DHA group, which leads to the quenching of fluorescence. Its impressive photochromic property inspired us to a simple but effective way to develop an encryption system which can let the correct information be displayed upon external stimulation.

Tilt and shift polymorphism in molecular perovskites

Molecular perovskites, i.e. ABX₃ coordination polymers with a perovskite structure, are a chemically diverse material platform for studying fundamental and applied materials properties such as barocalorics and improper ferroelectrics. Compared to inorganic perovskites, the use of molecular ions on the A- and X-site of molecular perovskites leads to new geometric and structural degrees of freedom. In this work we introduce the concept of tilt and shift polymorphism, categorising irreversible perovskite-to-perovskite phase transitions in molecular perovskites. As a model example we study the new molecular perovskite series [(nPr)₃(CH₃)N]M(C₂N₃)₃ with M = Mn²⁺, Co²⁺, Ni²⁺, and nPr = n-propyl, where different polymorphs crystallise in the perovskite structure but with different tilt systems depending on the synthetic conditions. Tilt and shift polymorphism is a direct ramification of the use of molecular building units in molecular perovskites and as such is unknown for inorganic perovskites. Given the role of polymorphism in materials science, medicine and mineralogy, and more generally the relation between physicochemical properties and structure, the concept introduced herein represents an important step in classifying the crystal chemistry of molecular perovskites and in maturing the field.

Phenoxazine-Dibenzothiophene Sulfoximine Emitters Featuring Both Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence and Aggregation Induced Emission

In this work, we demonstrate dibenzothiophene sulfoximine derivatives as building blocks for constructing emitters featuring both thermally activated delayed fluorescent (TADF) and aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties, with multiple advantages including high chemical and thermal stability, facile functionalization, as well as tunable electron-accepting ability. A series of phenoxazine-dibenzothiophene sulfoximine structured TADF emitters were successfully synthesized and their photophysical and electroluminescent properties were evaluated. The electroluminescence devices based on these emitters displayed diverse emissions from yellow to orange and reached external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) of 5.8% with 16.7% efficiency roll-off at a high brightness of 1000 cd·m-2.

Stimuli-Responsive AIEgens

The unique advantages and the exciting application prospects of AIEgens have triggered booming developments in this area in recent years. Among them, stimuli-responsive AIEgens have received particular attention and impressive progress, and they have been demonstrated to show tremendous potential in many fields from physical chemistry to materials science and to biology and medicine. Here, the recent achievements of stimuli-responsive AIEgens in terms of seven most representative types of stimuli including force, light, polarity, temperature, electricity, ion, and pH, are summarized. Based on typical examples, it is illustrated how each type of systems realize the desired stimuli-responsive performance for various applications. The key work principles behind them are ultimately deciphered and figured out to offer new insights and guidelines for the design and engineering of the next-generation stimuli-responsive luminescent materials for more broad applications.

Selective Expression of a Carbazole-Phenothiazine Derivative Leads to Dual-mode AIEE, TADF and Distinctive Mechanochromism

In this article, we report a newly designed D-A-D' derivative (CNCzPTZ), which displays selective expression of chromophores. This enables CNCzPTZ with solvatochromism, rare dual-mode AIEE properties, solid-state dual-emissions with phosphorescence and distinctive mechanochromism.CNCzPTZ exhibits dual-mode AIEE properties, since the emission band abruptly shifts from 550 nm to 500 nm as the water fraction increases. In the crystalline state, CNCzPTZ demonstrated dual emission bands of 478 nm and 538 nm.CNCzPTZ shows distinctive mechanochromic property in the solid state due to the planarization.

Stereoisomerization during Molecular Packing

Isomerization is an essential chemical process that often evokes dramatic change of chemical, physical, or biological properties. For a long time, isomerization has been known as a transformation that is induced by certain external energy such as light, heat, or mechanical force. Herein, a new isomerization phenomenon is described, which does not require external energy but simply occurs during molecular packing. The proposed isomerization is demonstrated by a series of symmetric donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) molecules, the donor of which may adopt two different stereoisomeric forms. Based on the evidence of the asymmetric isomers in crystals, the occurrence of isomerization during molecular packing is proved. Moreover, the unique asymmetric geometry in the solid state favors the restriction of intramolecular motion, resulting in highly efficient organic solids with quantum yields approaching unity.

Structures and Chromogenic Ion-Pair Recognition of a Catechol-Functionalized 1,8-Anthraquinone Macrocycle in Dimethyl Sulfoxide

A lariat anthraquinone macrocycle functionalized with catechol (H₂L) was synthesized via the Mannich reaction. The Mannich base H₂L can be partially decomposed into L1·3H₂O and HL1·NO₃·2H₂O in the presence of tetrabutylammonium hydroxide/Al(NO₃)₃·9H₂O in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). Free L1·3H₂O is essentially coplanar, while protonated HL1·NO₃·2H₂O is highly distorted. Dark-green FeCl₃·H₂L·2H₂O powder and Fe₂(HL)₂Cl₄ crystal can be isolated from ethanol (C₂H₅OH) in high/low H₂L concentration. Anthraquinone in H₂L is essentially coplanar but distorted in Fe₂(HL)₂Cl₄. The Fe(III) ion in Fe₂(HL)₂Cl₄ adopts a less common five-coordination with three catecholate O and two Cl atoms in the dimer. The distortion of inbound C═O is much higher than that of outbound C═O in anthraquinone in all of these compounds. H₂L responds to chlorides of Li⁺, Na⁺, K⁺, Cs⁺, Mg²⁺, Ca²⁺, Sr²⁺, Ba²⁺, Fe³⁺, Cu²⁺, Zn²⁺, and Al³⁺ in a DMSO solution, which can be observed by differential pulse voltammetry, UV-vis, and ¹H NMR. All of these metal ions shift E_p of anthraquinone to positive, especially the second reduction peak of anthraquinone. Fe³⁺, Zn²⁺, and Al³⁺ change the reduction of catechol fundamentally. H₂L (0.50 mM) shows a chromogenic response to FeCl₃ and Fe(NO₃)₃ to form uncommon 2:1 and 3:2 (H₂L/Fe) complexes, both peaking at 748 nm in DMSO. In the presence of 2 equiv of sodium hydroxide (NaOH), the 748 nm absorbance shifts to 777 nm, identical with Fe₂(HL)₂Cl₄ in DMSO. Different from the fast reaction between H₂L and FeCl₃, Fe(NO₃)₃ reacts with H₂L rather slowly in DMSO. Catechol can coordinate to FeCl₃ without any deprotonation in C₂H₅OH and DMSO. H₂L also shows a chromogenic response to fluorides and hydroxides, which peak at 670 and 684 nm, respectively, in DMSO. The binding ratio between H₂L and F^-/OH^- is 1:2. In a higher concentration of hydroxides, a 684 nm greenish-blue 1:2 complex forms immediately, which gradually transforms to a red complex and peaks at ∼530 nm in minutes at room temperature. No color change can be observed in an C₂H₅OH solution in the presence of OH^-.

Aggregation-Induced Emission: From Small Molecules to Polymers-Historical Background, Mechanisms and Photophysics

The enhancement of photoluminescence through formation of molecular aggregates in organic oligomers and conjugated organic polymers is reviewed. A historical contextualization of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) phenomena is presented. This includes the loose bolt or free rotor effect and J-aggregation phenomena, and discusses their characteristic features, including structures and mechanisms. The basis of both effects is examined in key molecules, with a particular emphasis on the AIE effect occurring in conjugated organic polymers with a polythiophene (PT) skeleton with triphenylethylene (TPE) units. Rigidification of the excited state structure is one of the defining conditions required to obtain AIE, and thus, by changing from a flexible ground state to rigid (quinoidal-like) structures, oligo and PTs are among the most promising emerging molecules alongside with the more extensively used TPE derivatives. Molecular structures moving away from the domination of aggregation-caused quenching to AIE are presented. Future perspectives for the rational design of AIEgen structures are discussed.

Donor/Acceptor Pairs Created by Electrostatic Interaction: Design, Synthesis, and Investigation on the Exciplex Formed Within the Pair

Exciplexes formed between donors and acceptors have been widely explored but isolating them from each other and tuning the interaction between the donor and acceptor have remained challenges. Here, we report donor/acceptor (D/A) pairs created by electrostatic interaction between a carbazole-based anionic donor and a 1,3,5-triazine-based cationic acceptor and the exciplex formed within the pair. In a diluted film, the D/A pair affords an isolated exciplex which shows thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF). By changing the anchoring position of the imidazolium cation in the cationic acceptor, interactions between the donor and acceptor can be changed. Compared to the conventional exciplex formed in a neat film, the isolated exciplex exhibits a substantially higher luminescence efficiency. The D/A pairs show intriguing mechanochromic luminescence and mechanical grinding-induced/reinforced TADF in the solid state and promising performances as emitters in organic light-emitting diodes.

Surfactant-Induced Interfacial Aggregation of Porphyrins for Structuring Color-Tunable Liquids

Locking nonequilibrium shapes of liquids into targeted architectures by interfacial jamming of nanoparticles is an emerging area in material science. 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-sulfonatophenyl) porphyrin (H₆ TPPS) shows three different aggregation states that present an absorption imaging platform to monitor the assembly and jamming of supramolecular polymer surfactants (SPSs) at the liquid/liquid interface. The interfacial interconversion of H₆ TPPS, specifically H₄ TPPS^2- dissolved in water, from J- to an H-aggregation was induced by strong electrostatic interactions with amine-terminated polystyrene dissolved in toluene at the water/toluene interface. This resulted in color-tunable liquids due to interfacial jamming of the SPSs formed between H₄ TPPS^2- and amine-terminated polystyrene. However, the formed SPSs cannot lock in nonequilibrium shapes of liquids. In addition, a self-wrinkling behavior was observed when amphiphilic triblock copolymers of PS-block-poly(2-vinylpyridine)-block-poly(ethylene oxide) were used to interact with H₄ TPPS^2- . Subsequently, the SPSs formed can lock in nonequilibrium shapes of liquids.

Carbazole-modified thiazolo[3,2-c][1,3,5,2]oxadiazaborinines exhibiting aggregation-induced emission and mechanofluorochromism

Two highly emissive carbazole-containing thiazole-fused oxadiazaborinines were designed and synthesized. These N,O-chelated organoboron dyes displayed large Stokes shifts and remarkable solvatofluorochromism in solutions, as well as good thermal stability and comparatively high photoluminescence quantum yields (up to 34%) in the solid state. The presence of a carbazole donor unit, linked with the oxadiazaborinine acceptor via a phenyl linker, restricted intramolecular rotation, leading to enhanced aggregation-induced emission properties of the compounds: in THF/water mixtures with a large water percentage, they demonstrated the formation of emissive nanoaggregates with an average size of 79 and 89 nm for complexes 2 and 3, respectively. The introduction of bulky tert-butyl groups attached to the carbazole moiety induced significant mechanofluorochromic properties of the compounds.

Reversibly Switchable Phase-Dependent Emission of Quinoline and Phenothiazine Derivatives towards Applications in Optical Sensing and Information Multicoding

Three new quinoline and di-tert-butyl phenothiazine isomeric derivatives were synthesized and characterized towards applications for oxygen sensing and optical information multicoding. The compounds with phenylene linker showed outstanding phase-dependent reversibility between ON/OFF states (low and high emission intensity, drastic shifting of emission colors, short- and long-lived fluorescence) in systematic grinding/fuming cycles, as required for multichannel memory devices based on optical information multicoding. The conformational diversity of the phenothiazine unit resulted in dual emission of the doped films implemented by the different luminescence mechanisms with peaks located at 414/530, 416/540, and 440/582 nm. The presence of a phenylene linker and thus two rotational degrees of freedom resulted in quenching of the delayed fluorescence of quasi-equatorial conformers in the solid state. The compound containing no phenylene bridge was characterized by two different driving photoluminescence mechanisms of the doped films: short fluorescence of the quasi-axial conformer and thermally activated delayed fluorescence of the quasi-equatorial form. This compound showed oxygen sensitivity with a Stern-Volmer constant of 7.5×10^-4  ppm^-1 .

A thermally activated delayed fluorescence photosensitizer for photodynamic therapy of oral squamous cell carcinoma under low laser intensity

In this report, a new thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) molecule [2-(4-triphenylvinyl-phenyl)-anthraquinone (TPE-AQ)] was synthesized. This nanomaterial has satisfactory photostability. Through In vitro analysis, it was found that these TADF nanoparticles (NPs) targeted lysosomes in oral cancer cells. ROS were released under irradiation with a 450-nm laser, and the growth of xenograft tumors in mouse models was inhibited in vivo. More interestingly, radiation exposure caused little damage to normal tissues due to the low irradiation intensity (mA) used in the photodynamic therapy (PDT) treatment of oral cancer. Therefore, these TADF NPs provide new possibilities for the development of new PDT drugs for biomedical applications. In future work, possible functional modifications of TADF NPs for increased potency in clinical applications will be addressed.

Developing deep blue (CIEy < 0.08) and pure blue (CIEy < 0.11) OLEDs via molecular engineering of carbazole moiety

Through carbazole modification, two new emitters with different emitting mechanisms were synthesized to obtain deep blue and pure blue OLEDs with CIE coordinates of (0.164, 0.077) and (0.157, 0.107) and EQEmax of 4.6% and 8.7%, respectively.

Multi-color mechanochromic luminescence of three polymorphic crystals of a donor–acceptor-type benzothiadiazole derivative

The three polymorphic crystals of a donor–acceptor dye exhibited different luminescence colors, which changed in response to mechanical grinding.

Nanomaterials with Supramolecular Assembly Based on AIE Luminogens for Theranostic Applications

One of the major pursuits of biomedical science is to develop advanced strategies for theranostics, which is expected to be an effective approach for achieving the transition from conventional medicine to precision medicine. Supramolecular assembly can serve as a powerful tool in the development of nanotheranostics with accurate imaging of tumors and real-time monitoring of the therapeutic process upon the incorporation of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) ability. AIE luminogens (AIEgens) will not only enable fluorescence imaging but will also aid in improving the efficacy of therapies. Furthermore, the fluorescent signals and therapeutic performance of these nanomaterials can be manipulated precisely owing to the reversible and stimuli-responsive characteristics of the supramolecular systems. Inspired by rapid advances in this field, recent research conducted on nanotheranostics with the AIE effect based on supramolecular assembly is summarized. Here, three representative strategies for supramolecular nanomaterials are presented as follows: a) supramolecular self-assembly of AIEgens, b) the loading of AIEgens within nanocarriers with supramolecular assembly, and c) supramolecular macrocycle-guided assembly via host-guest interactions. Meanwhile, the diverse applications of such nanomaterials in diagnostics and therapeutics have also been discussed in detail. Finally, the challenges of this field are listed in this review.

Full Visible Spectrum and White Light Emission with a Single, Input-Tunable Organic Fluorophore

The blue emission of M2biQ can be tuned to specific wavelengths throughout the visible region by changing the identity of the cation it interacts with. These optical properties are observed in MeCN solution and the solid state. White light is obtained in MeCN by using either the proper ratio of zinc ions or acid. Thus, M2biQ acts as a nearly universal emitter (λem = 468-690 nm) with large Stokes shifts (116-306 nm, Δν̃ = 7,042-11,823 cm-1). Full spectral profiles as well as quantum yields, lifetimes, and the crystal structures of key RGB and yellow emitters are reported. Emission wavelengths correlate with cationic radius, and TD-DFT calculations show that, for 1:1 complexes, the smaller the ion, the shorter the N-cation bond, and the greater the bathochromic emission shift.
