Platinum(II)-Based Supramolecular Scaffold-Templated Side-by-Side Assembly of Gold Nanorods through Pt⋅⋅⋅Pt and π-π Interactions

Dual Enhancement of Phosphorescence and Circularly Polarized Luminescence through Entropically Driven Self-Assembly of a Platinum(II) Complex

Addressing the dual enhancement of circular polarization (glum) and luminescence quantum yield (QY) in circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) systems poses a significant challenge. In this study, we present an innovative strategy utilizing the entropically driven self-assembly of amphiphilic phosphorescent platinum(II) complexes (L-Pt) with tetraethylene glycol chains, resulting in unique temperature dependencies. The entropically driven self-assembly of L-Pt leads to a synergistic improvement in phosphorescence emission efficiency (QY was amplified from 15 % at 25 °C to 53 % at 60 °C) and chirality, both in the ground state and the excited state (glum value has been magnified from 0.04×10-2 to 0.06) with increasing temperature. Notably, we observed reversible modulation of phosphorescence and chirality observed over at least 10 cycles through successive heating and cooling, highlighting the intelligent control of luminescence and chiroptical properties by regulating intermolecular interactions among neighboring L-Pt molecules. Importantly, the QY and glum of the L-Pt assembly in solid state were measured as 69 % and 0.16 respectively, representing relatively high values compared to most self-assembled CPL systems. This study marks the pioneering demonstration of dual thermo-enhancement of phosphorescence and CPL and provides valuable insights into the thermal effects on high-temperature and switchable CPL materials.

Molecular Alignment of Alkynylplatinum(II) 2,6-Bis(benzimidazol-2-yl)pyridine Double Complex Salts and the Formation of Well-Ordered Nanostructures Directed by Pt···Pt and Donor-Acceptor Interactions

A new class of alkynylplatinum(II) bzimpy (bzimpy = bis(benzimidazol-2-yl)pyridine) double complex salts (DCSs) containing dialkoxynaphthalene or pyromellitic diimide moieties on the alkynyl ligand has been reported to display distinct morphological properties compared to their precursor alkynylplatinum(II) complexes, with the capability of being aligned by the directional Pt···Pt and/or π-π stacking interactions. The incorporation of donor and acceptor units on the alkynyl ligands has been found to significantly perturb the alignment of the oppositely charged complex ions in the DCSs to stack in a twisted head-to-head manner, attributed to the additional driving forces of electrostatic and donor-acceptor interactions. The modulation of the Pt···Pt distances and the extent of aggregate formation have been demonstrated by altering the charge matching between the platinum(II) bzimpy moieties and the donor or acceptor moieties on the alkynyl ligand.

Two cyclometalated Pt(ii) complexes showing reversible phosphorescence switching due to grinding-induced destruction and crystallization-induced formation of supramolecular dimer structure

Two Pt(ii) complexes 1 and 2 reveal similar supramolecular dimer structure, in which two [Pt(dfppy/ppy)(pbdtmi)]+ cations connect each other through the π⋯π stacking interaction. Thus these complexes show reversible phosphorescence switching by grinding and crystallization with toluene.

Dynamic supramolecular self-assembly of platinum(ii) complexes perturbs an autophagy-lysosomal system and triggers cancer cell death

Self-assembly of platinum(ii) complexes to form supramolecular structures/nanostructures due to intermolecular ligand π-π stacking and metal-ligand dispersive interactions is widely used to develop functional molecular materials, but the application of such non-covalent molecular interactions has scarcely been explored in medical science. Herein is described the unprecedented biological properties of platinum(ii) complexes relevant to induction of cancer cell death via manifesting such intermolecular interactions. With conjugation of a glucose moiety to the planar platinum(ii) terpyridyl scaffold, the water-soluble complex [Pt(tpy)(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CArOGlu)](CF₃SO₃) (1a, tpy = 2,2':6',2''-terpyridine, Glu = glucose) is able to self-assemble into about 100 nm nanoparticles in physiological medium, be taken up by lung cancer cells via energy-dependent endocytosis, and eventually transform into other superstructures distributed in endosomal/lysosomal and mitochondrial compartments apparently following cleavage of the glycosidic linkage. Accompanying the formation of platinum-containing superstructures are increased autophagic vacuole formation, lysosomal membrane permeabilization, and mitochondrial membrane depolarization, as well as anti-tumor activity of 1a in a mouse xenograft model. These findings highlight the dynamic, multi-stage extracellular and intracellular supramolecular self-assembly of planar platinum(ii) complexes driven by modular intermolecular interactions with potential anti-cancer application.

Self-assembly of gold nanocubes into three-dimensional hollow colloidosomes and two-dimensional superlattices

Self-assembly of metal nanocubes (NCs) into periodic structures has applications in the fabrication of functional materials. Here, we propose a facile yet robust strategy for the fabrication of three-dimensional (3D) hollow colloidosomes and two-dimensional (2D) superlattices with highly ordered face-to-face configuration of gold NCs (AuNCs) via the hierarchical assembly of polymer-tethered AuNCs at the emulsion interface, providing a universal route for the preparation of hierarchical NC superstructures with applications in various fields.

Guanosine Assembly Enabled Gold Nanorods with Dual Thermo- and Photoswitchable Plasmonic Chiroptical Activity

Noble metal nanostructures with plasmonic circular dichroism (PCD) have attracted interest, and a modulation of PCD is of great importance for their potential applications. Herein, we propose a supramolecular strategy for achieving dual thermal and photoswitchable PCD. When guanosine (G), deoxyguanosine (dG), and boric acid modified achiral gold nanorods (GNRs) were coassembled into a hydrogel, hybrid nanofibers with PCD were produced. When the hydrogel was heated, the nanofiber was disassembled and the PCD disappeared. As the hydrogel was thermally reversible, a thermo-controlled PCD could be realized. The hybrid hydrogel also showed photoswitchable PCD. When the gel was irradiated with an IR laser, the PCD disappeared. It can be restored by being placed at room temperature. Moreover, the hybrid gel was selectively responsive to the circularly polarized light (CPL). For (G/dG)-GNR hybrid assemblies, the R-CPL irradiation showed photothermal efficiency higher than that of L-CPL, which made it useful for an IR-irradiation-controlled release of drug molecules.

Nanoimprint Lithography-Directed Self-Assembly of Bimetallic Iron-M (M=Palladium, Platinum) Complexes for Magnetic Patterning

Self-assembly of d⁸ metal polypyridine systems is a well-established approach for the creation of 1D organometallic assemblies but there are still challenges for the large-scale construction of nanostructured patterns from these building blocks. We describe herein the use of high-throughput nanoimprint lithography (NIL) to direct the self-assembly of the bimetallic complexes [4'-ferrocenyl-(2,2':6',2''-terpyridine)M(OAc)]⁺ (OAc)^- (M=Pd or Pt; OAc=acetate). Uniform nanorods are fabricated from the molecular self-organization and evidenced by morphological characterization. More importantly, when top-down NIL is coupled with the bottom-up self-assembly of the organometallic building blocks, regular arrays of nanorods can be accessed and the patterns can be controlled by changing the lithographic stamp, where the mold imposes a confinement effect on the nanorod growth. In addition, patterns consisting of the products formed after pyrolysis are studied. The resulting arrays of ferromagnetic FeM alloy nanorods suggest promising potential for the scalable production of ordered magnetic arrays and fabrication of magnetic bit-patterned media.

FeII4L4 Tetrahedron Binds to Nonpaired DNA Bases

A water-soluble self-assembled supramolecular Fe^II₄L₄ tetrahedron binds to single stranded DNA, mismatched DNA base pairs, and three-way DNA junctions. Binding of the coordination cage quenches fluorescent labels on the DNA strand, which provides an optical means to detect the interaction and allows the position of the binding site to be gauged with respect to the fluorescent label. Utilizing the quenching and binding properties of the coordination cage, we developed a simple and rapid detection method based on fluorescence quenching to detect unpaired bases in double-stranded DNA.

Aligning One-Dimensional Nanomaterials by Solution Processes

One-dimensional nanomaterials, including both nanowires (NWs) and nanotubes (NTs), have been extensively investigated in the decades because of their unique physicochemical properties. Particularly, aligning NWs/NTs into a network or complex micropatterns has been a key issue for its unique integrated functionalities, which enjoy benefits in versatile applications. So far, solution processes remain the most effective strategy to align NWs/NTs, which also bear advantages of mild operation condition and large-scale production. In this perspective, particular attention is drawn to the currently widely used solution coating approaches for aligning NWs/NTs, including the Langmuir-Blodgett film technique, solution shearing approaches, and methods of tri-phase contact line manipulation. We also proposed several perspectives in this field.
