A Guiding Principle for Strengthening Crosslinked Polymers: Synthesis and Application of Mobility‐Controlling Rotaxane Crosslinkers

Dynamically Cross-linked Oligo[2]rotaxane Networks Mediated by Metal-Coordination

Polyrotaxanes (PRs) have attracted significant research attention due to their unique topological structures and high degrees of conformational freedom. Herein, we take advantage of an oligo[2]rotaxane to construct a novel class of dynamically cross-linked rotaxane network (DCRN) mediated by metal-coordination. The oligo[2]rotaxane skeleton offers several distinct advantages: In addition to retaining the merits of traditional polymer backbones, the ordered intramolecular motion of the [2]rotaxane motifs introduced dangling chains into the network, thereby enhancing the stretchability of the DCRN. Additionally, the dissociation of host-guest recognition and subsequent sliding motion, along with the breakage of metal-coordination interactions, represented an integrated energy dissipation pathway to enhance mechanical properties. Moreover, the resulting DCRN demonstrated responsiveness to multiple stimuli and displayed exceptional self-healing capabilities in a gel state. Upon exposure to PPh3, which induced network deconstruction by breaking the coordinated cross-linking points, the oligo[2]rotaxane could be recovered, showcasing good recyclability. These findings demonstrate the untapped potential of the oligo[2]rotaxane as a polymer skeleton to develop DCRN and open the door to extend their advanced applications in intelligent mechanically interlocked materials.

Dynamic control of circumrotation of a [2]catenane by acid-base switching

Dynamic control of the motion in a catenane remains a big challenge as it requires precise design and sophisticated well-organized structures. This paper reports the design and synthesis of a donor-acceptor [2]catenane through mechanical interlocking, employing a crown ether featuring two dibenzylammonium salts on its side arms as the host and a cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene) (CBPQT ⋅ 4PF6) ring as the guest molecule. By addition of external acid or base, the catenane can form self-complexed or decomplexed compounds to alter the cavity size of the crown ether ring, consequently affecting circumrotation rate of CBPQT ⋅ 4PF6 ring of the catenane. This study offers insights for the design and exploration of artificial molecular machines with intricate cascading responsive mechanisms.

Non-threaded and rotaxane-type threaded wheel-axle assemblies consisting of dinickel(II) metallomacrocycle and dibenzylammonium axle

Rotaxanes are typically prepared using covalent bonds to trap a wheel component onto an axle molecule, and rotaxane-type wheel-axle assembly using only noncovalent interactions has been far less explored. Here we show that a dinickel(II) metallomacrocycle forms two different types of wheel-axle assemblies with a dibenzylammonium axle molecule based only on noncovalent interactions. The non-threaded assembly was obtained by introduction of Ni2+ into the macrocycle before the complexation with the axle molecule (metal-first method). The non-threaded assembly was in rapid equilibrium with each of the components in solution. The threaded assembly was obtained by introduction of Ni2+ after the formation of a pseudorotaxane from the non-metalated wheel and the axle molecule (axle-first method). The threaded assembly was not in equilibrium with the dissociated species even though it was maintained only by noncovalent interactions. Thus, formation of one of the non-threaded and threaded wheel-axle assemblies over the other is governed by the assembly pathway.

Highly robust supramolecular polymer networks crosslinked by a tiny amount of metallacycles

Supramolecular polymeric materials have exhibited attractive features such as self-healing, reversibility, and stimuli-responsiveness. However, on account of the weak bonding nature of most noncovalent interactions, it remains a great challenge to construct supramolecular polymeric materials with high robustness. Moreover, high usage of supramolecular units is usually necessary to promote the formation of robust supramolecular polymeric materials, which restrains their applications. Herein, we describe the construction of highly robust supramolecular polymer networks by using only a tiny amount of metallacycles as the supramolecular crosslinkers. A norbornene ring-opening metathesis copolymer with a 120° dipyridine ligand is prepared and self-assembled with a 60° or 120° Pt(II) acceptor to fabricate the metallacycle-crosslinked polymer networks. With only 0.28 mol% or less pendant dipyridine units to form the metallacycle crosslinkers, the mechanical properties of the polymers are significantly enhanced. The tensile strengths, Young's moduli, and toughness of the reinforced polymers reach up to more than 20 MPa, 600 MPa, and 150 MJ/m3, respectively. Controllable destruction and reconstruction of the metallacycle-crosslinked polymer networks are further demonstrated by the sequential addition of tetrabutylammonium bromide and silver triflate, indicative of good stimuli-responsiveness of the networks. These remarkable performances are attributed to the thermodynamically stable, but dynamic metallacycle-based supramolecular coordination complexes that offer strong linkages with good adaptive characteristics.

Mechanically Interlocked Polymers with Dense Mechanical Bonds

ConspectusMechanically interlocked polymers (MIPs) such as polyrotaxanes and polycatenanes are polymer architectures that incorporate mechanical bonds, which represent a compelling frontier in polymer science. MIPs with cross-linked structures are known as mechanically interlocked networks (MINs) and are widely utilized in materials science. Leveraging the motion of mechanical bonds, MINs hold the potential for achieving a combination of robustness and dynamicity. Currently, the reported MINs predominantly consist of networks with discrete mechanical bonds as cross-linking points, exemplified by well-known slide-ring materials and rotaxane/catenane cross-linked polymers. The motion of these mechanically interlocked cross-linking points facilitates the redistribution of tension throughout the network, effectively preventing stress concentration and thereby enhancing material toughness. In these instances, the impact of mechanical bonds can be likened to the adage "small things can make a big difference", whereby a limited number of mechanical bonds substantially elevate the mechanical performance of conventional polymers. In addition to MINs cross-linked by mechanical bonds, there is another type of MIN in which their principal parts are polymer chains composed of dense mechanical bonds. Within these MINs, mechanical bonds generally serve as repeating units, and their unique properties stem from integrating and amplifying the function of a large amount of mechanical bonds. Consequently, MINs with dense mechanical bonds tend to reflect the intrinsic properties of mechanical interlocked polymers, making their exploration critical for a comprehensive understanding of MIPs. Nevertheless, investigations into MINs featuring dense mechanical bonds remain relatively scarce.This Account presents a comprehensive overview of our investigation and insights into MINs featuring dense mechanical bonds. First, we delve into the synthetic strategies employed to effectively prepare MINs with dense mechanical bonds, while critically evaluating their advantages and limitations. Through meticulous control of the core interlocking step, three distinct strategies have emerged: mechanical interlocking followed by polymerization, supramolecular polymerization followed by mechanical interlocking, and dynamic interlocking. Furthermore, we underscore the structure-property relationships of MINs with dense mechanical bonds. The macroscopic properties of MINs originate from integrating and amplifying countless microscopic motions of mechanical bonds, a phenomenon we define as an integration and amplification mechanism. Our investigation has revealed detailed motion characteristics of mechanical bonds in bulk mechanically interlocked materials, encompassing the quantification of motion activation energy, discrimination of varying motion distances, and elucidation of the recovery process. Additionally, we have elucidated their influence on the mechanical performance of the respective materials. Moreover, we have explored potential applications of MINs, leveraging their exceptional mechanical properties and dynamicity. These applications include enhancing the toughness of conventional polymers, engineering mechanically adaptive and multifunctional aerogels, and mitigating Li protrusion as interfacial layers in lithium-ion batteries. Finally, we offer our personal perspectives on the promises, opportunities, and key challenges in the future development of MINs with dense mechanical bonds, underscoring the potential for transformative advancements in this burgeoning field.

Stretchable poly[2]rotaxane elastomers

Mechanically interlocked polymers (MIPs) are promising candidates for the construction of elastomeric materials with desirable mechanical performance on account of their abilities to undergo inherent rotational and translational mechanical movements at the molecular level. However, the investigations on their mechanical properties are lagging far behind their structural fabrication, especially for linear polyrotaxanes in bulk. Herein, we report stretchable poly[2]rotaxane elastomers (PREs) which integrate numerous mechanical bonds in the polymeric backbone to boost macroscopic mechanical properties. Specifically, we have synthesized a hydroxy-functionalized [2]rotaxane that subsequently participates in the condensation polymerization with diisocyanate to form PREs. Benefitting from the peculiar structural and dynamic characteristics of the poly[2]rotaxane, the representative PRE exhibits favorable mechanical performance in terms of stretchability (∼1200%), Young's modulus (24.6 MPa), and toughness (49.5 MJ/m3). Moreover, we present our poly[2]rotaxanes as model systems to understand the relationship between mechanical bonds and macroscopic mechanical properties. It is concluded that the mechanical properties of our PREs are mainly determined by the unique topological architectures which possess a consecutive energy dissipation pathway including the dissociation of host-guest interaction and consequential sliding motion of the wheel along the axle in the [2]rotaxane motif.

Sacrificial Mechanical Bond is as Effective as a Sacrificial Covalent Bond in Increasing Cross-Linked Polymer Toughness

Sacrificial chemical bonds have been used effectively to increase the toughness of elastomers because such bonds dissociate at forces significantly below the fracture limit of the primary load-bearing bonds, thereby dissipating local stress. This approach owes much of its success to the ability to adjust the threshold force at which the sacrificial bonds fail at the desired rate, for example, by selecting either covalent or noncovalent sacrificial bonds. Here, we report experimental and computational evidence that a mechanical bond, responsible for the structural integrity of a rotaxane or a catenane, increases the elastomer's fracture strain, stress, and energy as much as a covalent bond of comparable mechanochemical dissociation kinetics. We synthesized and studied 6 polyacrylates cross-linked by either difluorenylsuccinonitrile (DFSN), which is an established sacrificial mechanochromic moiety; a [2]rotaxane, whose stopper allows its wheel to dethread on the same subsecond time scale as DFSN dissociates when either is under tensile force of 1.5-2 nN; a structurally homologous [2]rotaxane with a much bulkier stopper that is stable at force >5.5 nN; similarly stoppered [3]rotaxanes containing DFSN in their axles; and a control polymer with aliphatic nonsacrificial cross-links. Our data suggest that mechanochemical dethreading of a rotaxane without failure of any covalent bonds may be an important, hitherto unrecognized, contributor to the toughness of some rotaxane-cross-linked polymers and that sacrificial mechanical bonds provide a mechanism to control material fracture behavior independently of the mechanochemical response of the covalent networks, due to their distinct relationships between structure and mechanochemical reactivity.

Synergistic Covalent-and-Supramolecular Polymers with an Interwoven Topology

Network topologies, especially some high-order topologies, are able to furnish cross-linked polymer materials with enhanced properties without altering their chemical composition. However, the fabrication of such topologically intriguing architectures at the macromolecular level and in-depth insights into their structure-property relationship remain a significant challenge. Herein, we relied on synergistic covalent-and-supramolecular polymers (CSPs) as a platform to prepare a range of polymer networks with an interwoven topology. Specifically, through the sequential supramolecular self-assemblies, the covalent polymers (CPs) and metallosupramolecular polymers (MSPs) could be interwoven in our CSPs by [2]pseudorotaxane cross-links. As a result, the obtained CSPs possessed a topological network that could not only promote the synergistic effect between CPs and MSPs to afford mechanically robust yet dynamic materials but also vest polymers with some functions, as manifested by force-induced hierarchical dissociations of supramolecular interactions and superior thermomechanical stability compared to our previously reported CSP systems. Furthermore, our CSPs exhibited tunable mechanical performance toward multiple stimuli including K⁺ and PPh₃, demonstrating abundant stimuli-responsive properties. We hope that these findings could provide novel opportunities toward achieving topological structures at the macromolecular level and also motivate further explorations of polymeric materials via the way of controlling their topological structures.

Oligo[2]catenane That Is Robust at Both the Microscopic and Macroscopic Scales

Polycatenanes are extremely attractive topological architectures on account of their high degrees of conformational freedom and multiple motion patterns of the mechanically interlocked macrocycles. However, exploitation of these peculiar structural and dynamic characteristics to develop robust catenane materials is still a challenging goal. Herein, we synthesize an oligo[2]catenane that showcases mechanically robust properties at both the microscopic and macroscopic scales. The key feature of the structural design is controlling the force-bearing points on the metal-coordinated core of the [2]catenane moiety that is able to maximize the energy dissipation of the oligo[2]catenane via dissociation of metal-coordination bonds and then activation of sequential intramolecular motions of circumrotation, translation, and elongation under an external force. As such, at the microscopic level, the single-molecule force spectroscopy measurement exhibits that the force to rupture dynamic bonds in the oligo[2]catenane reaches a record high of 588 ± 233 pN. At the macroscopic level, our oligo[2]catenane manifests itself as the toughest catenane material ever reported (15.2 vs 2.43 MJ/m³). These fundamental findings not only deepen the understanding of the structure-property relationship of poly[2]catenanes with a full set of dynamic features but also provide a guiding principle to fabricate high-performance mechanically interlocked catenane materials.

Speed Tuning of the Formation/Dissociation of a Metallorotaxane

Switching between the formation/dissociation of rotaxanes is important to control the function of various types of rotaxane-based materials. We have developed a convenient and simple strategy, the so-called "accelerator addition", to make a static rotaxane dynamic without apparently affecting the chemical structure. As an interlocked molecule that enables tuning of the formation/dissociation speed, a metallorotaxane was quantitatively generated by the complexation of a triptycene-based dumbbell-shaped mononuclear complex, [PdL₂ ]²⁺ (L=2,3-diaminotriptycene), with 27C9. As a result of the inertness of the Pd²⁺ -based coordination structure, the metallorotaxane was slowly formed (the static state). This rotaxane formation was accelerated 27 times simply by adding Br^- as an accelerator (the dynamic state). A similar drastic acceleration was also demonstrated during the dissociation process when Cs⁺ was added to the metallorotaxane to form the free axle [PdL₂ ]²⁺ and the 27C9-Cs⁺ complex.

Amplification of integrated microscopic motions of high-density [2]rotaxanes in mechanically interlocked networks

Integrating individual microscopic motion to perform tasks in macroscopic sale is common in living organisms. However, developing artificial materials in which molecular-level motions could be amplified to behave macroscopically is still challenging. Herein, we present a class of mechanically interlocked networks (MINs) carrying densely rotaxanated backbones as a model system to understand macroscopic mechanical properties stemmed from the integration and amplification of intramolecular motion of the embedded [2]rotaxane motifs. On the one hand, the motion of mechanical bonds introduces the original dangling chains into the network, and the synergy of numerous such microscopic motions leads to an expansion of entire network, imparting good stretchability and puncture resistance to the MINs. On the other hand, the dissociation of host-guest recognition and subsequent sliding motion represent a peculiar energy dissipation pathway, whose integration and amplification result in the bulk materials with favorable toughness and damping capacity. Thereinto, we develop a continuous stress-relaxation method to elucidate the microscopic motion of [2]rotaxane units, which contributes to the understanding of the relationship between cumulative microscopic motions and amplified macroscopic mechanical performance.

Mechanically interlocked polymers based on rotaxanes

The nature of mechanically interlocked molecules (MIMs) has continued to encourage researchers to design and construct a variety of high-performance materials. Introducing mechanically interlocked structures into polymers has led to novel polymeric materials, called mechanically interlocked polymers (MIPs). Rotaxane-based MIPs are an important class, where the mechanically interlocked characteristic retains a high degree of structural freedom and mobility of their components, such as the rotation and sliding motions of rotaxane units. Therefore, these MIP materials are known to possess a unique set of properties, including mechanical robustness, adaptability and responsiveness, which endow them with potential applications in many emerging fields, such as protective materials, intelligent actuators, and mechanisorption. In this review, we outline the synthetic strategies, structure-property relationships, and application explorations of various polyrotaxanes, including linear polyrotaxanes, polyrotaxane networks, and rotaxane dendrimers.

Mechanically Interlocked Vitrimers

Mechanically interlocked networks (MINs) have emerged as an encouraging platform for the development of mechanically robust yet adaptive materials. However, the difficulty in reversibly breaking the mechanical bonds poses a real challenge to MINs as customizable and sustainable materials. Herein, we couple the vitrimer chemistry with mechanically interlocked structures to generate a new class of MINs─referred to as mechanically interlocked vitrimers (MIVs)─to address the challenge. Specifically, we have prepared the acetoacetate-decorated [2]rotaxane that undergoes catalyst-free condensation reaction with two commercially available multiamine monomers to furnish MIVs. Compared with the control whose wheels are nonslidable under applied force, our MIVs with slidable mechanically interlocked motifs showcase enhanced mechanical performance including Young's modulus (18.5 ± 0.9 vs 1.0 ± 0.1 MPa), toughness (3.7 ± 0.1 vs 0.9 ± 0.1 MJ/m³), and damping capacity (98% vs 72%). The structural basis behind unique property profiles is demonstrated to be the force-induced host-guest dissociation and consequential intramolecular sliding of the wheels along the axles. The peculiar behaviors represent a consecutive energy dissipation mechanism, which provides a complement to other pathways that mainly depend on the breaking of sacrificial bonds. Moreover, by virtue of the vitrimer chemistry of vinylogous urethanes, we impart reprocessability and chemical recyclability to the MINs, thereby empowering the reconfiguration of the networks without breaking of the mechanical bonds. Finally, it is disclosed that the intramolecular motions of [2]rotaxanes could accelerate the dynamic exchange of the vinylogous urethane bonds via loosening the network, suggestive of a synergistic effect between the dual dynamic entities.

Post-Synthetic Macrocyclization of Rotaxane Building Blocks

Although not often encountered, cyclic interlocked molecules are appealing molecular targets because of their restrained tridimensional structure which is related to both the cyclic and interlocked shapes. Interlocked molecules such as rotaxane building blocks may be good candidates for post-synthetic intramolecular cyclization if the preservation of the mechanical bond ensures the interlocked architecture throughout the reaction. This is obviously the case if the modification does not involve the cleavage of either the macrocycle's main chain or the encircled part of the axle. However, among the post-synthetic reactions, the chemical linkage between two reactive sites belonging to embedded elements of rotaxanes still consists of an underexploited route to interlocked cyclic molecules. This Review lists the rare examples of macrocyclization through chemical connection between reactive sites belonging to a surrounding macrocycle and/or an encircled axle of interlocked rotaxanes.

Quantitative analysis of bending hysteresis by real-time monitoring of curvature in flexible polymeric films

Flexibility, viscoelasticity and stress-strain relation in bending polymeric films are key factors in designing mechanically durable flexible electronic devices and soft robots. However, bending hysteresis, which appears as a precursor phenomenon of fracture and fatigue, remains unclear; no one quantitatively evaluated a bending curvature causing hysteresis. Herein, we report the bending hysteresis of polymeric films used as common substrates in flexible electronics by precisely monitoring bending curvatures. By real-time measuring curvatures of films upon bending and subsequent unbending, we have successfully determined the curvatures that cause the hysteresis. These curvatures also depend on a film thickness. Furthermore, we revealed that the occurrence of bending hysteresis is explained by bending strains that have a nonlinear relation with internal stresses. This enables us to predict strain limits that cause the bending hysteresis, based on a stress-strain curve of polymeric films.

Synthetic platform for mono-functionalised tridentate macrocycles as key precursors of mechanically-linked macromolecular systems

Macrocycles bearing a variety of functional groups give access to a wide range of synthetic methods for further derivatisation or preparation of more complex structures such as mechanically interlocked molecules or polymeric materials.

Antibacterial and Anti-Fungal Biological Activities for Acrylonitrile, Acrylamide and 2-Acrylamido-2-Methylpropane Sulphonic Acid Crosslinked Terpolymers

There is a pressing demand to synthesize polymers that have antibacterial and antifungal properties. The aim of this study was to synthesize a crosslinked hydrophilic terpolymer with acrylamide, acrylonitrile, acrylic acid, acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulphonic acid and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as a crosslinker. The chemical structure and thermal stability of the prepared cross-linked terpolymers were confirmed by spectroscopic and thermal analyses. Moreover, the swelling experiments were performed to investigate their swelling capacity. Furthermore, the efficiency of the synthesized cross-linked polymer gels was assessed as an antimicrobial agent against Gram-positive, Gram-negative bacteria and fungal strains. The synthesized polymers showed broad inhibition effect, with more antibacterial activity by the AM4 polymer sample containing high percentage of acrylonitrile monomer in the prepared terpolymers (4 mol ratio of acrylic acid: 1 mol ratio of acrylamide: 16 mole ratio of acrylonitrile against Gram negative bacterial strain), while sample M3 terpolymer (1 mol ratio of acrylamide: 1 mole ratio acrylonitrile: 3 mole ratio of acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulphonic acid) showed a promising anti-fungal activity.

Polyrotaxanes created by end-capping polypseudorotaxanes self-assembled from β-CDs with distal azide terminated PHEMA using propargylamine monosubstituted β-CDs

When a distal azide terminated PHEMA was allowed to self-assemble with varying amounts of β-CDs in water, followed by in situ reaction with PA-β-CDs via the CuAAC, linear polyrotaxanes (PRs) and a mixture of linear and hyperbranched PRs were obtained.

Unexpected Polypseudorotaxanes Formed from the Self-assembly of β-Cyclodextrins with Poly( N-isopropylacrylamide) Homo- and Copolymers

Compared with polypseudorotaxanes (PPRs) formed from the self-assembly of β-cyclodextrins (β-CDs) with poly(propylene glycol) (PPG) and γ-CDs with poly( N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm), the ratio of the inner cavity size of β-CD to the cross-sectional area of PNIPAAm appears not appropriate for their self-assembly. For a better understanding of the possibility of β-CDs including PNIPAAm and the crystal structure of PPRs formed therefrom, the PNIPAAm homo- and copolymers were subjected to self-assembly with β-CDs in an aqueous solution at room temperature. The results revealed that when β-CDs meet thicker PNIPAAms, the self-assembly takes place, not only giving rise to PPRs by a manner of main-chain inclusion complexation but also presenting the PPRs a matched over-fit crystal structure different from those of either a matched tight-fit β-CD-PPG PPR or a mismatched over-fit γ-CD-PNIPAAm PPR. This is most likely due to the thicker PNIPAAm adapting its unfavorable main-chain cross-sectional area to fit into the cavity of β-CDs by changing the side-chain conformations. Based on the X-ray diffraction patterns, a monoclinic crystal system was created from these PPRs and the unit cell parameters calculated were as follows: a = 15.3 Å, b = 10.3 Å, and c = 21.2 Å; β = 110.3°; and space group P2. It suggested that this matched over-fit crystal structure would possess a Mosaic crystal structure rather than a typical channel-like one.

A supramolecular network derived by rotaxane tethering three ureido pyrimidinone groups
