Abstract
We herein report the iridium-catalyzed enantioselective C-H borylation of aryl chlorides. A variety of prochiral biaryl compounds could be well-tolerated, affording a vast array of axially chiral biaryls with high enantioselectivities. The current method exhibits a high turnover number (TON) of 7000, which represents the highest in functional-group-directed asymmetric C-H activation. The high TON was attributed to a weak catalyst-substrate interaction that was caused by mismatched chirality between catalyst and substrate. We also demonstrated the synthetic application of the current method by C-B, ortho-C-H, and C-Cl bond functionalization, including programmed Suzuki-Miyaura coupling for the synthesis of axially chiral polyarenes.

Abstract
Enantioconvergent catalysis has expanded asymmetric synthesis to new methodologies able to convert racemic compounds into a single enantiomer. This review covers recent advances in transition-metal-catalyzed transformations, such as radical-based cross-coupling of racemic alkyl electrophiles with nucleophiles or racemic alkylmetals with electrophiles and reductive cross-coupling of two electrophiles mainly under Ni/bis(oxazoline) catalysis. C-H functionalization of racemic electrophiles or nucleophiles can be performed in an enantioconvergent manner. Hydroalkylation of alkenes, allenes, and acetylenes is an alternative to cross-coupling reactions. Hydrogen autotransfer has been applied to amination of racemic alcohols and C-C bond forming reactions (Guerbet reaction). Other metal-catalyzed reactions involve addition of racemic allylic systems to carbonyl compounds, propargylation of alcohols and phenols, amination of racemic 3-bromooxindoles, allenylation of carbonyl compounds with racemic allenolates or propargyl bromides, and hydroxylation of racemic 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds.

Ni-catalyzed carbamoylation of unactivated alkenes for stereoselective construction of six-membered lactams. Nat Commun 2022; 13:5964. Abstract
Nitrogen-based heterocycles have aroused widespread interest due to their reoccurrence in many pharmaceuticals. Amongst these motifs, the enantioenriched lactams are the ubiquitous scaffolds found in myriad biologically active natural products and drugs. Recently, the transition metal-catalyzed asymmetric carbamoylation has been widely employed as a straightforward arsenal for chiral lactam architecture synthesis, including β-lactam and γ-lactam. However, despite the extensive efforts, there still remains no protocol to accomplish the related δ-lactam synthesis. In this manuscript, the Ni-catalyzed enantioselective carbamoylation of unactivated alkenes by the leverage of reductive dicarbofunctionalization strategy allows for the expedient access to two types of mostly common six-membered lactams: 3,4-dihydroquinolinones and 2-piperidinone in high yield and enantioselectivity. This protocol features with good functional group tolerance, as well as broad substrate scope. The newly developed chiral 8-Quinox skeleton ligand is the key parameter for this transformation, which significantly enhances the reactivity and enantioselectivity. Six-membered chiral lactams are common structural motifs of pharmaceuticals. Here, the authors describe a nickel-catalyzed reductive carbamoylation of alkenes to form enantioenriched six-membered lactams.

Abstract
The asymmetric hydroaminocarbonylation of olefins represents a straightforward approach for the synthesis of enantioenriched amides, but is hampered by the necessity to employ CO gas, often at elevated pressures. We herein describe, as an alternative, an enantioselective hydrocarbamoylation of alkenes leveraging dual copper hydride and palladium catalysis to enable the use of readily available carbamoyl chlorides as a practical carbamoylating reagent. The protocol is applicable to various types of olefins, including alkenyl arenes, terminal alkenes, and 1,1-disubstituted alkenes. Substrates containing a diverse range of functional groups as well as heterocyclic substructures undergo functionalization to provide α- and β-chiral amides in good yields and with excellent enantioselectivities.

Abstract
The construction of multi-stereocenters by a transition metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction is a major challenge. The catalytic desymmetric functionalization of unactivated alkenes remains largely unexplored. Herein, we disclose -a desymmetric dicarbofunctionalization of 1,6-dienes via a nickel-catalyzed reductive cross-coupling reaction. The leverage of the underdeveloped chiral 8-Quinox enables the Ni-catalyzed desymmetric carbamoylalkylation of both unactivated mono- and disubstituted alkenes to form pyrrolidinone bearing two nonadjacent stereogenic centers in high enantio- and stereoselectivitives with broad functional-group tolerance. The synthetic application of pyrrolidinones allows the rapid access to complex chiral fused-heterocycles.

Abstract
Exploration of the 4-exo-dig cyclocarbopalladation in the discovery of new and original scaffolds afforded some unexpected results. The search for a way to produce seven-membered ring systems led to polycyclic molecules bearing a tetrasubstituted carbon. The triple bond that substitutes the cyclohexene ring on the starting compound is crucial for a high stereoselectivity. This observation has been confirmed by the reaction of a nonsubstituted cyclohexene ring resulting in poor stereoselectivity and low yields.

Abstract
The Pd-catalyzed asymmetric α-arylation of carbonyl compounds is a valuable strategy to form benzylic stereocenters. However, the origin of the stereoselectivity of these reactions is poorly understood, and little is known about the reactivity of the putative diastereomeric arylpalladium enolate intermediates. To this end, we report the synthesis and characterization of a series of diphosphine-ligated arylpalladium fluoroenolate complexes, including complexes bearing a metal-bound, stereogenic carbon and an enantioenriched chiral diphosphine ligand. These complexes reductively eliminate to form chiral α-aryl-α-fluorooxindoles with enantioselectivities and rates that are relevant to those of the catalytic process with SEGPHOS as the ancillary ligand. Kinetic studies showed that the rate of reductive elimination is slightly slower than the rate of epimerization of the intermediate, causing the reductive elimination step to impart the greatest influence on the enantioselectivity. DFT calculations of these processes are consistent with these experimental rates and suggest that the minor diastereomer forms the major enantiomer of the product. The rates of reductive elimination from complexes containing a variety of electronically varied aryl ligands revealed the unusual trend that complexes bearing more electron-rich aryl ligands react faster than those bearing more electron-poor aryl ligands. Noncovalent Interaction (NCI) and Natural Bond Orbital (NBO) analyses of the transition-state structures for reductive elimination from the SEGPHOS-ligated complexes revealed key donor-acceptor interactions between the Pd center and the fluoroenolate fragment. These interactions stabilize the pathway to the major product enantiomer more strongly than they stabilize that to the minor enantiomer.

Abstract
A palladium-catalyzed asymmetric hydroesterification-cyclization of 1,6-enynes with CO and alcohol was developed to efficiently prepare a variety of enantioenriched γ-lactams bearing a chiral quaternary carbon center and a carboxylic ester group. The approach featured good to high chemo-, region-, and enantioselectivities, high atom economy, and mild reaction conditions as well as broad substrate scope. The correlation between the multiple selectivities of such process and the N-substitutes of the amide linker in the 1,6-enyne substrate has been depicted by the crystallographic evidence and control experiments.

Abstract
We herein describe the first enantioselective α-carbonylative arylation, providing a diverse set of chiral spiro β,β'-diketones bearing various ring sizes and functionalities in high yields and good to excellent enantioselectivities. Calculations suggest the transformation proceeds through reductive elimination instead of nucleophilic addition pathway.

Abstract
The direct α-arylation of carbonyl compounds emerged over the last two decades as a straightforward method for the formation of C(sp3)-C(sp2) bonds. Mechanistic studies suggested a classical cross-coupling catalytic cycle. This consists of oxidative addition of the aryl halide (ArX) to the Pd(0)-catalyst, transmetallation of the Na- or K-enolate generated in situ, and subsequent reductive elimination. Even though the general reaction mechanism was thoroughly investigated, studies focusing on enantioselective variants of this transformation are rare. Here, the computational study of the [Pd(BINAP)]-catalyzed α-arylation of 2-methyltetralone with bromobenzene is reported. The whole reaction energy profile was computed and several mechanistic scenarios were investigated for the key steps of the reaction, which are the enolate transmetallation and the C-C bond-forming reductive elimination. Among the computed mechanisms, the reductive elimination from the C-bound enolate Pd complex was found to be the most favorable one, providing a good match with the stereoselectivity observed experimentally with different ligands and substrates. Detailed analysis of the stereodetermining transition structures allowed us to establish the origin of the reaction enantioselectivity.

Abstract
α-Functionalization of carbonyl compounds in organic synthesis has traditionally been accomplished via classical enolate chemistry. As α-functionalized carbonyl moieties are ubiquitous in biologically and pharmaceutically valuable molecules, catalytic α-alkylations have been extensively studied, yielding a plethora of practical and efficient methodologies. Moreover, stereoselective carbon–carbon bond formation at the α-position of achiral carbonyl compounds has been achieved by using various transition metal–chiral ligand complexes. This review describes recent advances—in the last 20 years and especially focusing on the last 10 years—in transition metal-catalyzed α-alkylations of carbonyl compounds, such as aldehydes, ketones, imines, esters, and amides and in efficient carbon–carbon bond formations. Active catalytic species and ligand design are discussed, and mechanistic insights are presented. In addition, recently developed photo-redox catalytic systems for α-alkylations are described as a versatile synthetic tool for the synthesis of chiral carbonyl-bearing molecules.

Abstract
A highly enantioselective synthesis of δ-lactams having a chiral quaternary carbon center at the α-position has been developed through an asymmetric alkylation of 3-arylpiperidin-2-ones under phase-transfer conditions. In this transformation, a 2,2-diarylvinyl group on the δ-lactam nitrogen atom plays a crucial role as a novel protecting group and an achiral auxiliary for improving both yield and enantioselectivity of the reaction.

Abstract
Transition-metal catalysis has the potential to address shortcomings in the classic SN2 reaction of an amine with an alkyl electrophile, both with respect to reactivity and to enantioselectivity. In this study, we describe the development of a user-friendly method (reaction at room temperature, with commercially available catalyst components) for the enantioconvergent nucleophilic substitution of racemic secondary alkyl halides (α-iodolactams) by indoles. Mechanistic studies are consistent with the formation of a copper(I)-indolyl complex that reacts at different rates with the two enantiomers of the electrophile, which interconvert under the reaction conditions (dynamic kinetic resolution). This investigation complements earlier work on photoinduced enantioconvergent N-alkylation, supporting the premise that this important challenge can be addressed by a range of strategies.

Abstract
Lactams are privileged in bioactive natural products and pharmaceutical agents and widely featured in functional materials. This study presents a novel versatile approach to the direct synthesis of lactams from oxocarboxylic acids without catalyst or external hydrogen. The method involves the in situ release of formic acid from formamides induced by water to facilitate efficient cycloamination. Water also suppresses the formation of byproducts. This unconventional pathway is elucidated by a combination of model experiments and density functional theory calculations, whereby cyclic imines (5-methyl-3,4-dihydro-2-pyrrolone and its tautomeric structures) are found to be favorable intermediates toward lactam formation, in contrast to the conventional approach encompassing cascade reductive amination and cyclization. This sustainable and simple protocol is broadly applicable for the efficient production of various N-unsubstituted and N-substituted lactams.
