Breaking Parallel Orientation of Rods via a Dendritic Architecture toward Diverse Supramolecular Structures

Hierarchical Self-Assembly of Capsule-Shaped Zirconium Coordination Cages with Quaternary Structure

Biological macromolecules exhibit emergent functions through hierarchical self-assembly, a concept that is extended to design artificial supramolecular assemblies. Here, the first example of breaking the common parallel arrangement of capsule-shaped zirconium coordination cages is reported by constructing the hierarchical porous framework ZrR-1. ZrR-1 adopts a quaternary structure resembling protein and contains 12-connected chloride clusters, representing the highest connectivity for zirconium-based cages reported thus far. Compared to the parallel framework ZrR-2, ZrR-1 demonstrated enhanced stability in acidic aqueous solutions and a tenfold increase in BET surface area (879 m2  g-1 ). ZrR-1 also exhibits excellent proton conductivity, reaching 1.31 × 10-2 S·cm-1 at 353 K and 98% relative humidity, with a low activation energy of 0.143 eV. This finding provides insights into controlling the hierarchical self-assembly of metal-organic cages to discover superstructures with emergent properties.

Coatable Negative Dispersion Retarder: Kinetically Controlled Self-Assembly Pathway of Butterfly-Shaped Molecular Building Blocks for the Construction of Nanocolumns

Disc-shaped building blocks with columnar phases have attracted attention for their potential in optical applications, including a retarder. However, to achieve coatable high-performance optical films, it is essential to understand a subtle interaction balance between building blocks and relevant self-assembled behaviors during material processing. Herein, we studied a self-assembled nanocolumn evaluation of linear butterfly-shaped dendrons (T-A3D) consisting of thiophene-based conjugated core and flexible alkyl dendron. X-ray diffraction provided insight into the unique hexagonal columnar liquid crystal phase of T-A3D, driven by intermolecular hydrogen bonding and coplanarity of the thiophene-based conjugated core. The formation of a self-assembled nanocolumn with high mobility enabled the uniaxial orientation of butterfly-shaped T-A3D on the aligned rod-shaped nematic reactive mesogens, resulting in a transparent and colorless two-layered negative retarder. The self-assembled nanocolumn consisting of butterfly-shaped molecule would break a new ground for developing advanced optical thin films.

Leveraging Macromolecular Isomerism for Phase Complexity in Janus Nanograins

It remains intriguing whether macromolecular isomerism, along with competing molecular interactions, could be leveraged to create unconventional phase structures and generate considerable phase complexity in soft matter. Herein, we report the synthesis, assembly, and phase behaviors of a series of precisely defined regioisomeric Janus nanograins with distinct core symmetry. They are named B₂DB₂ where B stands for iso-butyl-functionalized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) and D stands for dihydroxyl-functionalized POSS. While BPOSS prefers crystallization with a flat interface, DPOSS prefers to phase-separate from BPOSS. In solution, they form 2D crystals owing to strong BPOSS crystallization. In bulk, the subtle competition between crystallization and phase separation is strongly influenced by the core symmetry, leading to distinct phase structures and transition behaviors. The phase complexity was understood based on their symmetry, molecular packing, and free energy profiles. The results demonstrate that regioisomerism could indeed generate profound phase complexity.

Molecular Geometry-Directed Self-Recognition in the Self-Assembly of Giant Amphiphiles

Three sets of polyoxometalate (POM)-based amphiphilic hybrid macromolecules with different rigidity in their organic tails are used as models to understand the effect of molecular rigidity on their possible self-recognition feature during self-assembly processes. Self-recognition is achieved in the mixed solution of two structurally similar, sphere-rigid T-shape-linked oligofluorene(TOF₄ ) rod amphiphiles, with the hydrophilic clusters being Anderson (Anderson-TOF₄ ) and Dawson (Dawson-TOF₄ ), respectively. Anderson-TOF₄ is observed to self-assemble into onion-like multilayer structures and Dawson-TOF₄ forms multilayer vesicles. The self-assembly is controlled by the interdigitation of hydrophobic rods and the counterion-mediated attraction among charged hydrophilic inorganic clusters. When the hydrophobic blocks are less rigid, e.g., partially rigid polystyrene and fully flexible alkyl chains, self-recognition is not observed, attributing to the flexible conformation of hydrophobic molecules in the solvophobic domain. This study reveals that the self-recognition among amphiphiles can be achieved by the geometrical limitation of the supramolecular structure due to the rigidity of solvophobic domains.

Superlattice Engineering with Chemically Precise Molecular Building Blocks

Correlating nanoscale building blocks with mesoscale superlattices, mimicking metal alloys, a rational engineering strategy becomes critical to generate designed periodicity with emergent properties. For molecule-based superlattices, nevertheless, nonrigid molecular features and multistep self-assembly make the molecule-to-superlattice correlation less straightforward. In addition, single component systems possess intrinsically limited volume asymmetry of self-assembled spherical motifs (also known as "mesoatoms"), further hampering novel superlattices' emergence. In the current work, we demonstrate that properly designed molecular systems could generate a spectrum of unconventional superlattices. Four categories of giant molecules are presented. We systematically explore the lattice-forming principles in unary and binary systems, unveiling how molecular stoichiometry, topology, and size differences impact the mesoatoms and further toward their superlattices. The presence of novel superlattices helps to correlate with Frank-Kasper phases previously discovered in soft matter. We envision the present work offers new insights about how complex superlattices could be rationally fabricated by scalable-preparation and easy-to-process materials.

Intercluster Exchange-Stabilized Novel Complex Colloidal χc Phase

Designing complex cluster crystals with a specific function using simple colloidal building blocks remains a challenge in materials science. Herein, we propose a conceptually new design strategy for constructing complex cluster crystals via hierarchical self-assembly of simple soft Janus colloids. A novel and previously unreported colloidal cluster-χ (χ_c) phase, which resembles the essential structural features of α-manganese but at a larger length scale, is obtained through molecular dynamics simulations. The formation of the χ_c phase undergoes a remarkable two-step self-assembly process, that is, the self-assembly of clusters with specific size dispersity from Janus colloids, followed by the highly ordered organization of these clusters. More importantly, the dynamic exchange of particles between these clusters plays a critical role in stabilizing the χ_c phase. Such a conceptual design framework based on intercluster exchange has the potential to effectively construct novel complex cluster crystals by hierarchical self-assembly of colloidal building blocks.

Crowding-Induced Unconventional Phase Behaviors in Dendritic Rodlike Molecules via Side-Chain Engineering

Dendritic molecules with a fanlike or conelike conformation are common molecular building blocks to construct supramolecular columnar or spherical phases. Although it is well-accepted that the preferred molecular conformation of dendritic molecules dictates their packing schemes, manipulation of this crucial parameter usually requires significant changes in molecular structures and tedious synthetic efforts. Herein, we report a simple yet highly efficient strategy to tune the molecular conformation of dendritic rodlike molecules by adjusting the length of alkyl side chains tethered to the rods. Strikingly, tiny chemical structure differences can largely change the "crowding" near the branching point to induce the "fanlike to conelike" conformational transitions and thus result in the formation of diverse supramolecular structures, including the columnar phase, double gyroid phase, and the unconventional Frank-Kasper σ and A15 phases. Our study provides a practical platform for further investigation of unconventional structure formation and phase transitions in soft matter.

Driving force balance-the "identity card" of supramolecules in a self-sorting multicomponent assembly system

Contrary to the popular belief that multicomponent assembly systems will theoretically co-assemble under the same type of driving forces, two distinct assembly modes from a system composed of two chemically similar supramolecules were demonstrated in this work. Although with exactly the same driving forces, molecule-level self-sorting unexpectedly occurred in this two-component system made of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) core-based supramolecules with one and eight lysine derivative arms. From the experiments, it was concluded that instead of driving force types, driving force counterpoise plays a vital role here, which we called "identity card hypothesis". The hypothesis suggests that two highly similar components show high affinity for the same molecules through the differentiated "identity card"-like balance of driving forces induced by the difference in the molecular spatial shape, which has never been reported before.

Photochromic Dendrimers for Photoswitched Solid-To-Liquid Transitions and Solar Thermal Fuels

Dendrimers are well-defined, highly branched macromolecules that have been widely applied in the fields of catalysis, sensing, and biomedicine. Here, we present a novel multifunctional photochromic dendrimer fabricated through grafting azobenzene units onto dendrimers, which not only enables controlled switching of adhesives and effective repair of coating scratches but also realizes high-performance solar energy storage and on-demand heat release. The switchable adhesives and healable coatings of azobenzene-containing dendrimers are attributed to the reversible solid-to-liquid transitions because trans-isomers and cis-isomers have different glass transition temperatures. The adhesion strengths increase significantly with the increase in dendrimer generations, wherein the adhesion strength of fifth-generation photochromic dendrimers (G5-Azo) can reach up to 1.62 MPa, five times higher than that of pristine azobenzenes. The solar energy storage and heat release of dendrimer solar thermal fuels, the isomers of which possess different chemical energies, can be also enhanced remarkably with the amplification of azobenzene groups on dendrimers. The storage energy density of G5-Azo can reach 59 W h kg^-1, which is much higher than that of pristine azobenzenes (36 W h kg^-1). The G5-Azo fuels exhibit a 5.2 °C temperature difference between cis-isomers and trans-isomers. These findings provide a new perspective and tremendously attractive avenue for the fabrication of photoswitchable adhesives and coatings and solar thermal fuels with dendrimer structures.

Spherical Supramolecular Structures Constructed via Chemically Symmetric Perylene Bisimides: Beyond Columnar Assembly

Like other discotic molecules, self-assembled supramolecular structures of perylene bisimides (PBIs) are commonly limited to columnar or lamellar structures due to their distinct π-conjugated scaffolds and unique rectangular shape of perylene cores. The discovery of PBIs with supramolecular structures beyond layers and columns may expand the scope of PBI-based materials. A series of unconventional spherical packing phases in PBIs, including A15 phase, σ phase, dodecagonal quasicrystalline (DQC) phase, and body-centered cubic (BCC) phase, is reported. A strategy involving functionalization of perylene core with several polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) cages achieved spherical assemblies of PBIs, instead of columnar assemblies, due to the significantly increased steric hindrance at the periphery. This strategy may also be employed for the discovery of unconventional spherical assemblies in other related discotic molecules by the introduction of similar bulky functional groups at their periphery. An unusual inverse phase transition sequence from a BCC phase to a σ phase was observed by increasing annealing temperature.

Magnifying the Structural Components of Biomembranes: A Prototype for the Study of the Self-Assembly of Giant Lipids

How biomembranes are self-organized to perform their functions remains a pivotal issue in biological and chemical science. Understanding the self-assembly principles of lipid-like molecules hence becomes crucial. Herein, we report the mesostructural evolution of amphiphilic sphere-rod conjugates (giant lipids), and study the roles of geometric parameters (head-tail ratio and cross-sectional area) during this course. As a prototype system, giant lipids resemble natural lipidic molecules by capturing their essential features. The self-assembly behavior of two categories of giant lipids (I-shape and T-shape, a total of 8 molecules) is demonstrated. A rich variety of mesostructures is constructed in solution state and their molecular packing models are rationally understood. Giant lipids recast the phase behavior of natural lipids to a certain degree and the abundant self-assembled morphologies reveal distinct physiochemical behaviors when geometric parameters deviate from natural analogues.
