A μ-Phosphido Diiron Dumbbell in Multiple Oxidation States

Softer Is Better for Titanium: Molecular Titanium Arsenido Anions Featuring Ti≡As Bonding and a Terminal Parent Arsinidene

We introduce the arsenido ligand onto the TiIV ion, yielding a remarkably covalent Ti≡As bond and the parent arsinidene Ti═AsH moiety. An anionic arsenido ligand is assembled via reductive decarbonylation involving the discrete TiII salt [K(cryptand)][(PN)2TiCl] (1) (cryptand = 222-Kryptofix) and Na(OCAs)(dioxane)1.5 in thf/toluene to produce the mixed alkali ate-complex [(PN)2Ti(As)]2(μ2-KNa(thf)2) (2) and the discrete salt [K(cryptand)][(PN)2Ti≡As] (3) featuring a terminal Ti≡As ligand. Protonation of 2 or 3 with various weak acids cleanly forms the parent arsinidene [(PN)2Ti═AsH] (4), which upon deprotonation with KCH2Ph in thf generates the more symmetric anionic arsenido [(PN)2Ti(As){μ2-K(thf)2}]2 (5). Experimental and computational studies suggest the pKa of 4 to be ∼23, and the bond orders in 2, 3, and 5 are all in the range of a Ti≡As triple bond, with decreasing bond order in 4.

Unusual Hydrogenation Reactivities of a Thiolate-Bridged Dicobalt μ-Nitride Featuring a Bent {CoIII-N-CoIII} Core

Transition metal nitrides have received considerable attention owing to their crucial roles in nitrogen fixation and nitrogen atom transfer reactions. Compared to the early and middle transition metals, it is much more challenging to access late transition metal nitrides, especially cobalt in group 9. So far, only a handful of cobalt nitrides have been reported; consequently, their hydrogenation reactivity is largely unexplored. Herein, we present a structurally and spectroscopically well-characterized thiolate-bridged dicobalt μ-nitride [Cp*CoIII(μ-SAd)(μ-N)CoIIICp*] (2) featuring a bent {CoIII(μ-N)CoIII} core. Remarkably, complex 2 can realize not only direct hydrogenation of nitride to amide but also stepwise N-H bond formation from nitride to ammonia. Specifically, 2 can facilely activate dihydrogen (H2) at mild conditions to generate a dicobalt μ-amide [Cp*CoII(μ-SAd)(μ-NH2)CoIICp*] (4) via an unusual mechanism of two-electron oxidation of H2 as proposed by computational studies; in the presence of protons (H+) and electrons, nitride 2 can convert to dicobalt μ-imide [Cp*CoIII(μ-SAd)(μ-NH)CoIIICp*][BPh4] (3[BPh4]) and to CoIICoII μ-amide 4, and finally release ammonia. In contrast to 2, the only other structurally characterized dicobalt μ-nitride Na(THF)4{[(ketguan)CoIII(N3)]2(μ-N)} (ketguan = [(tBu2CN)C(NDipp)2]-, Dipp = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl) (e) that possesses a linear {CoIII(μ-N)CoIII} moiety cannot directly react with H2 or H+. Further in-depth electronic structure analyses shed light on how the varying geometries of the {CoIII(μ-N)CoIII} moieties in 2 and e, bent vs linear, impart their disparate reactivities.

Cyclic iron tetra N-heterocyclic carbenes: synthesis, properties, reactivity, and catalysis

Cyclic iron tetracarbenes are an emerging class of macrocyclic iron N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes. They can be considered as an organometallic compound class inspired by their heme analogs, however, their electronic properties differ, e.g. due to the very strong σ-donation of the four combined NHCs in equatorial coordination. The ligand framework of iron tetracarbenes can be readily modified, allowing fine-tuning of the structural and electronic properties of the complexes. The properties of iron tetracarbene complexes are discussed quantitatively and correlations are established. The electronic nature of the tetracarbene ligand allows the isolation of uncommon iron(III) and iron(IV) species and reveals a unique reactivity. Iron tetracarbenes are successfully applied in C-H activation, CO₂ reduction, aziridination and epoxidation catalysis and mechanisms as well as decomposition pathways are described. This review will help researchers evaluate the structural and electronic properties of their complexes and target their catalyst properties through ligand design.

Metal-Ligand Cooperativity to Assemble a Neutral and Terminal Niobium Phosphorus Triple Bond (Nb≡P)

Decarbonylation along with P-atom transfer from the phosphaethynolate anion, PCO^- , to the Nb^IV complex [(PNP)NbCl₂ (N^t BuAr)] (1) (PNP=N[2-Pⁱ Pr₂ -4-methylphenyl]₂ ^- ; Ar=3,5-Me₂ C₆ H₃ ) results in its coupling with one of the phosphine arms of the pincer ligand to produce a phosphanylidene phosphorane complex [(PNPP)NbCl(N^t BuAr)] (2). Reduction of 2 with CoCp*₂ cleaves the P-P bond to form the first neutral and terminal phosphido complex of a group 5 transition metal, namely, [(PNP)Nb≡P(N^t BuAr)] (3). Theoretical studies have been used to understand both the coupling of the P-atom and the reductive cleavage of the P-P bond. Reaction of 3 with a two-electron oxidant such as ethylene sulfide results in a diamagnetic sulfido complex having a P-P coupled ligand, namely [(PNPP)Nb=S(N^t BuAr)] (4).

Organometallic μ-Nitridodiiron Complexes in Oxidation States Ranging from (III/III) to (IV/IV)

Iron complexes with nitrido ligands are of interest as molecular analogues of key intermediates during N₂-to-NH₃ conversion in industrial or enzymatic processes. Dinuclear iron complexes with a bridging nitrido unit are mostly known in relatively high oxidation states (III/IV or IV/IV), originating from the decomposition of azidoiron precursors via high-valent Fe≡N intermediates. The use of a tetra-NHC macrocyclic scaffold ligand (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene) has now allowed for the isolation of a series of organometallic μ-nitridodiiron complexes ranging from the mid-valent Fe^III-N-Fe^III (1) via mixed-valent Fe^III-N-Fe^IV (type 4) to the high-valent Fe^IV-N-Fe^IV (type 5) species that are interconverted at moderate potentials, accompanied by axial ligand binding at the Fe^IV sites. Magnetic measurements and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy showed the homovalent complexes to be diamagnetic and the mixed-valent system to feature an S = 1/2 ground state due to very strong antiferromagnetic coupling. The bonding in the Fe-N-Fe moiety has been further probed by crystallographic structure determination, ⁵⁷Fe Mössbauer and UV-vis spectroscopies, as well as density functional theory computations, which revealed high covalency and nearly identical Fe-N distances across this redox series. The latter has been rationalized in terms of the nonbonding nature of the combination of Fe d_z² atomic orbitals from which electrons are successively removed upon oxidation, and these redox processes are best described as being metal-centered. The tetra-NHC-ligated μ-nitridodiiron series complements a set of related complexes with single-atom μ-oxido and μ-phosphido bridges, but the Fe-N-Fe core exhibits a comparatively high stability over several oxidation states. This promises interesting applications in view of the manifold catalytic uses of μ-nitridodiiron complexes based on macrocyclic N-donor porphinato(2-) or phthalocyaninato(2-) ligands.

Recent advances in the chemistry of the phosphaethynolate and arsaethynolate anions

Over the past decade, the reactivity of 2-phosphaethynolate (OCP^-), a heavier analogue of the cyanate anion, has been the subject of momentous interest in the field of modern organometallic chemistry. It is used as a precursor to novel phosphorus-containing heterocycles and as a ligand in decarbonylative processes, serving as a synthetic equivalent of a phosphinidene derivative. This perspective aims to describe advances in the reactivities of phosphaethynolate and arsaethynolate anions (OCE^-; E = P, As) with main-group element, transition metal, and f-block metal scaffolds. Further, the unique structures and bonding properties are discussed based on spectroscopic and theoretical studies.

A thiolate-bridged FeIVFeIV μ-nitrido complex and its hydrogenation reactivity toward ammonia formation

Iron nitrides are key intermediates in biological nitrogen fixation and the industrial Haber-Bosch process, used to form ammonia from dinitrogen. However, the proposed successive conversion of nitride to ammonia remains elusive. In this regard, the search for well-described multi-iron nitrido model complexes and investigations on controlling their reactivity towards ammonia formation have long been of great challenge and importance. Here we report a well-defined thiolate-bridged Fe^IVFe^IV μ-nitrido complex featuring an uncommon bent Fe-N-Fe moiety. Remarkably, this complex shows excellent reactivity toward hydrogenation with H₂ at ambient conditions, forming ammonia in high yield. Combined experimental and computational studies demonstrate that a thiolate-bridged Fe^IIIFe^III μ-amido complex is a key intermediate, which is generated through an unusual two-electron oxidation of H₂. Moreover, ammonia production was also realized by treating this diiron μ-nitride with electrons and water as a proton source.

Transition Metal Carbide Complexes

Carbide complexes remain a rare class of molecules. Their paucity does not reflect exceptional instability but is rather due to the generally narrow scope of synthetic procedures for constructing carbide complexes. The preparation of carbide complexes typically revolves around generating L_nM-CE_x fragments, followed by cleavage of the C-E bonds of the coordinated carbon-based ligands (the alternative being direct C atom transfer). Prime examples involve deoxygenation of carbonyl ligands and deprotonation of methyl ligands, but several other p-block fragments can be cleaved off to afford carbide ligands. This Review outlines synthetic strategies toward terminal carbide complexes, bridging carbide complexes, as well as carbide-carbonyl cluster complexes. It then surveys the reactivity of carbide complexes, covering stoichiometric reactions where the carbide ligands act as C₁ reagents, engage in cross-coupling reactions, and enact Fischer-Tropsch-like chemistry; in addition, we discuss carbide complexes in the context of catalysis. Finally, we examine spectroscopic features of carbide complexes, which helps to establish the presence of the carbide functionality and address its electronic structure.

Phosphorus and Arsenic Atom Transfer to Isocyanides to Form π-Backbonding Cyanophosphide and Cyanoarsenide Titanium Complexes

Decarbonylation along with E atom transfer from Na(OCE) (E=P, As) to an isocyanide coordinated to the tetrahedral Ti^II complex [(Tp^tBu,Me )TiCl], yielded the [(Tp^tBu,Me )Ti(η³ -ECNAd)] species (Ad=1-adamantyl, Tp^tBu,Me- =hydrotris(3-tert-butyl-5-methylpyrazol-1-yl)borate). In the case of E=P, the cyanophosphide ligand displays nucleophilic reactivity toward Al(CH₃ )₃ ; moreover, its bent geometry hints to a reduced Ad-NCP^3- resonance contributor. The analogous and rarer mono-substituted cyanoarsenide ligand, Ad-NCAs^3- , shows the same unprecedented coordination mode but with shortening of the N=C bond. As opposed to Ti^II , V^II fails to promote P atom transfer to AdNC, yielding instead [(Tp^tBu,Me )V(OCP)(CNAd)]. Theoretical studies revealed the rare ECNAd moieties to be stabilized by π-backbonding interactions with the former Ti^II ion, and their assembly to most likely involve a concerted E atom transfer between Ti-bound OCE^- to AdNC ligands when studying the reaction coordinate for E=P.

Charge frustration in ligand design and functional group transfer

Molecules with different resonance structures of similar importance, such as heterocumulenes and mesoionics, are prominent in many applications of chemistry, including 'click chemistry', photochemistry, switching and sensing. In coordination chemistry, similar chameleonic/schizophrenic entities are referred to as ambidentate/ambiphilic or cooperative ligands. Examples of these had remained, for a long time, limited to a handful of archetypal compounds that were mere curiosities. In this Review, we describe ambiphilicity - or, rather, 'charge frustration' - as a general guiding principle for ligand design and functional group transfer. We first give a historical account of organic zwitterions and discuss their electronic structures and applications. Our discussion then focuses on zwitterionic ligands and their metal complexes, such as those of ylidic and redox-active ligands. Finally, we present new approaches to single-atom transfer using cumulated small molecules and outline emerging areas, such as bond activation and stable donor-acceptor ligand systems for reversible 1e^- chemistry or switching.

Actinide tetra-N-heterocyclic carbene 'sandwiches'

Highly-symmetrical, thorium and uranium octakis-carbene 'sandwich' complexes have been prepared by 'sandwiching' the An(iv) cations between two anionic macrocyclic tetra-NHC ligands, one with sixteen atoms and the other with eighteen atoms. The complexes were characterized by a range of experimental methods and DFT calculations. X-ray crystallography confirms the geometry at the metal centre can be set by the size of the macrocyclic ring, leading to either square prismatic or square anti-prismatic shapes; the geometry of the latter is retained in solution, which also undergoes reversible, electrochemical one-electron oxidation or reduction for the uranium variant. DFT calculations reveal a frontier orbital picture that is similar to thorocene and uranocene, in which the NHC ligands show almost exclusively σ-donation to the metal without π-backbonding.

A μ-Phosphido Diiron Dumbbell in Multiple Oxidation States

The reaction of the ferrous complex [LFe(NCMe)2 ](OTf)2 (1), which contains a macrocyclic tetracarbene as ligand (L), with Na(OCP) generates the OCP- -ligated complex [LFe(PCO)(CO)]OTf (2) together with the dinuclear μ-phosphido complex [(LFe)2 P](OTf)3 (3), which features an unprecedented linear Fe-(μ-P)-Fe motif and a "naked" P-atom bridge that appears at δ=+1480 ppm in the 31 P NMR spectrum. 3 exhibits rich redox chemistry, and both the singly and doubly oxidized species 4 and 5 could be isolated and fully characterized. X-ray crystallography, spectroscopic studies, in combination with DFT computations provide a comprehensive electronic structure description and show that the Fe-(μ-P)-Fe core is highly covalent and structurally invariant over the series of oxidation states that are formally described as ranging from FeIII FeIII to FeIV FeIV . 3-5 now add a higher homologue set of complexes to the many systems with Fe-(μ-O)-Fe and Fe-(μ-N)-Fe core structures that are prominent in bioinorganic chemistry and catalysis.
