Transition-Metal-Free Acceptorless Decarbonylation of Formic Acid Enabled by a Liquid Chemical-Looping Strategy

A Sustainable and Versatile Cellulose-based CO Surrogate for Carbonylative Reactions

The highly toxic and flammable nature of CO lead to high handling demand for its use and storage, undoubtedly constricting its further academic exploration for carbonylative reactions in laboratory. Although many CO surrogates have been developed and applied in carbonylative reactions instead of CO gas, exploration of more versatile CO surrogates for diverse carbonylations is still highly desirable. Here we report a cellulose-based CO surrogate (cellulose-CO), which prepared from cheap and abundant cellulose through a simple and green process. The very mild and efficient CO release makes this reagent a highly competitive candidate for providing CO in carbonylation. This surrogate is compatible with a wide variety of functional groups in various carbonylative reactions due to the excellent compatibility of cellulose-CO. Moreover, the cellulose-CO exhibits excellent chemical stability which can be stored exposed to air for 12 months, making this CO surrogate a robust and general reagent in CO chemistry.

Synthesis of Deuterated Enaminones with High Isotopic Fidelity

The unexpected oxidation of nitrogenous heterocycles by aldehyde oxidase (AO) may be addressed by the substitution of deuterium for hydrogen adjacent to the heterocycle nitrogen atom. Enaminones are versatile intermediates in the synthesis of nitrogenous heterocycles. We report that heretofore inaccessible monodeuterated enaminones of the general structure RC(=O)CH=CDNMe2 may be synthesized from methyl ketones and DCO2Me with high isotopic fidelity and efficient utilization of deuterium.

A "Power-to-X" Route to Acetic Acid via Palladium-Catalyzed Isomerization of Methyl Formate

The synthesis of acetic acid by formal isomerization of methyl formate (MF) was investigated using molecular catalysts. The base-catalyzed decarbonylation of MF, yielding CO and methanol in situ, was integrated with their palladium-catalyzed recombination for the synthesis of acetic acid and methyl acetate in a one pot reaction. The complex [Pd(Cl)₂ (dppe)] [dppe=1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)-ethane] in combination with NaI as iodide source and NaOMe as base were identified as promising molecular components to enable the overall conversion. Sequential application of the statistical methods design of experiments and simplex optimization was used in combination with thermodynamic analysis of the competing reaction pathways for experimental planning and data analysis. Starting from a proof-of-principle with a turnover number (TON) of 11, the catalytic system could thus be optimized to allow quantitative conversion of MF with a TON of 43000, whereby a yield of 83 % of acetate groups and a yield of 74 % for free acetic acid was obtained.

Polyvinylpyrrolidone-Stabilized Iridium Nanoparticles Catalyzed the Transfer Hydrogenation of Nitrobenzene Using Formic Acid as the Source of Hydrogen

Catalytic nitrobenzene reduction is crucial for the synthesis of 4,4-methylene diphenyl diisocyanate, which is used to produce polyurethane foams, thermoplastic elastomers, and adhesives. The stability and activity of nanoparticle catalysts are affected by surface ligands and stabilizers. We established the complete composition of 7.0 ± 1.1 nm iridium oxide nanoparticles that were stabilized by polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP[Ir]). PVP[Ir] and its surface stabilizers were characterized using elemental analysis (EA), high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), FT-IR, and UV-vis spectroscopy. Notably, PVP[Ir] contained 33.8 ± 0.4% Ir. XPS binding energy analyses suggest that 7% of the Ir is Ir(0) and 93% is IrO2. Using formic acid as the source of hydrogen, PVP[Ir] catalyzed the selective hydrogenation of nitrobenzene to give aniline as the only product in 66% yield in 1 h at 160 °C in a high-pressure metal reactor. Less than 1% of the side products (azobenzene and azoxybenzene) were detected. In contrast, using alcohol as the hydrogen source led to a low yield and a poor selectivity for aniline.

Rapid Organocatalytic Formation of Carbon Monoxide: Application towards Carbonylative Cross Couplings

Herein, the first organocatalytic method for the transformation of non‐derivatized formic acid into carbon monoxide (CO) is introduced. Formylpyrrolidine (FPyr) and trichlorotriazine (TCT), which is a cost‐efficient commodity chemical, enable this decarbonylation. Utilization of dimethylformamide (DMF) as solvent and catalyst even allows for a rapid CO generation at room temperature. Application towards four different carbonylative cross coupling protocols demonstrates the high synthetic utility and versatility of the new approach. Remarkably, this also comprehends a carbonylative Sonogashira reaction at room temperature employing intrinsically difficult electron‐deficient aryl iodides. Commercial ¹³C‐enriched formic acid facilitates the production of radiolabeled compounds as exemplified by the pharmaceutical Moclobemide. Finally, comparative experiments verified that the present method is highly superior to other protocols for the activation of carboxylic acids.
