A Terminal Iron Nitrilimine Complex: Accessing the Terminal Nitride through Diazo N-N Bond Cleavage

Trimethylsilyldiazomethane Disassembly at a Three-Fold Symmetric Iron Site

The reaction of equimolar trimethylsilyldiazomethyllithium (LiTMSD) with high spin (S = 2) PhB(AdIm)3FeCl (PhB(AdIm)3- = tris(3-adamantylimidazol-2-ylidene)phenylborate) affords the corresponding N-nitrilimido complex PhB(AdIm)3Fe-N═N═C(SiMe3). This complex can be converted to the thermodynamically more favorable C-isocyanoamido isomer PhB(AdIm)3Fe-C═N═N(SiMe3) by reaction with an additional equivalent of LiTMSD. While the iron(II) complexes are four-coordinate, the diazomethane is bound side-on in the iron(I) congener PhB(AdIm)3Fe(N,N'-κ2-N2C(H)Si(CH3)3). The latter complex adopts high spin (S = 3/2) ground state and features an unusually weak C-H bond. Photolysis of the iron(II) complexes induces N═N bond cleavage, with the iron(II) cyanide PhB(AdIm)3Fe-C≡N and iron(IV) nitride PhB(AdIm)3Fe≡N complexes being the major products of the reaction. The same products are obtained when the iron(I) complex is photolyzed or treated with a fluoride source. The trimethylsilyldiazomethane-derived ligand disassembly reactions are contrasted with those observed for related tris(carbene)amine complexes.

Untangling ancillary ligand donation versus locus of oxidation effects on metal nitride reactivity

We detail the relative role of ancillary ligand electron-donating ability in comparison to the locus of oxidation (either metal or ligand) on the electrophilic reactivity of a series of oxidized Mn salen nitride complexes. The electron-donating ability of the ancillary salen ligand was tuned via the para-phenolate substituent (R = CF3, H, tBu, OiPr, NMe2, NEt2) in order to have minimal effect on the geometry at the metal center. Through a suite of experimental (electrochemistry, electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy) and theoretical (density functional theory) techniques, we have demonstrated that metal-based oxidation to [MnVI(SalR)N]+ occurs for R = CF3, H, tBu, OiPr, while ligand radical formation to [MnV(SalR)N]+˙ occurs with the more electron-donating substituents R = NMe2, NEt2. We next investigated the reactivity of the electrophilic nitride with triarylphosphines to form a MnIV phosphoraneiminato adduct and determined that the rate of reaction decreases as the electron-donating ability of the salen para-phenolate substituent is increased. Using a Hammett plot, we find a break in the Hammett relation between R = OiPr and R = NMe2, without a change in mechanism, consistent with the locus of oxidation exhibiting a dominant effect on nitride reactivity, and not the overall donating ability of the ancillary salen ligand. This work differentiates between the subtle and interconnected effects of ancillary ligand electron-donating ability, and locus of oxidation, on electrophilic nitride reactivity.

Combining Donor Strength and Oxidative Stability in Scorpionates: A Strongly Donating Fluorinated Mesoionic Tris(imidazol-5-ylidene)borate Ligand

Strongly donating scorpionate ligands support the study of high-valent transition metal chemistry; however, their use is frequently limited by oxidative degradation. To address this concern, we report the synthesis of a tris(imidazol-5-ylidene)borate ligand featuring trifluoromethyl groups surrounding its coordination pocket. This ligand represents the first example of a chelating poly(imidazol-5-ylidene) mesoionic carbene ligand, a scaffold that is expected to be extremely donating. The {NiNO}10 complex of this ligand, as well as that of a previously reported strongly donating tris(imidazol-2-ylidene)borate, has been synthesized and characterized. This new ligand's strong donor properties, as measured by the υNO of its {NiNO}10 complex and natural bonding orbital second-order perturbative energy analysis, are at par with those of the well-studied alkyl-substituted tris(imidazol-2-ylidene)borates, which are known to effectively stabilize high-valent intermediates. The good donor properties of this ligand, despite the electron-withdrawing trifluoromethyl substituents, arise from the strongly donating imidazol-5-ylidene mesoionic carbene arms. These donor properties, when combined with the robustness of trifluoromethyl groups toward oxidative decomposition, suggest this ligand scaffold will be a useful platform in the study of oxidizing high-valent transition-metal species.

Experimental and Computational Studies on Uranium Diazomethanediide Complexes

Uranium diazomethanediide complexes can be prepared and their synthesis, structure and reactivity were explored. Reaction of the uranium imido compound [η5 -1,2,4-(Me3 Si)3 C5 H2 ]2 U=N(p-tolyl)(dmap) (1) or [η5 -1,3-(Me3 C)2 C5 H3 ]2 U=N(p-tolyl)(dmap) (4) with Me3 SiCHN2 cleanly yields the first isocyanoimido metal complexes [η5 -1,2,4-(Me3 Si)3 C5 H2 ]2 U(=NNC)(μ-CNN=)U(dmap)[η5 -1,2,4-(Me3 Si)3 C5 H2 ]2 (2) and {[η5 -1,3-(Me3 C)2 C5 H3 ]2 U[μ-(=NNC)]}6 (5), respectively. Both compounds exhibit remarkable thermal stability and were fully characterized. According to density functional theory (DFT) studies the bonding between the Cp2 U2+ and [NNC]2- moieties is strongly polarized with a significant 5 f orbital contribution, which is also reflected in the reactivity of these complexes. For example, complex 5 acts as a nucleophile toward alkylsilyl halides and engages in a [2+2] cycloaddition with CS2 , but no reaction occurs in the presence of internal alkynes.

An Isolable Gallium-Substituted Nitrilimine and its Reactivity with B-H, Si-H and B-B Bonds

Reaction of the Ga(I) compound NacNacGa (9) with the diazo compound N₂ CHSiMe₃ affords the nitrilimine compound NacNacGa(N-NCSiMe₃ )(CH₂ SiMe₃ ) (10). Carrying out this reaction in the presence of pyridine does not lead to C-H activation on the transient alkylidene NacNacGa=CHSiMe₃ but generates a metallated diazo species NacNacGa(NHN=CHSiMe₃ )(CN₂ SiMe₃ ) (13) that further rearranges into the isonitrile compound NacNacGa(NHN=CHSiMe₃ )(N(NC)SiMe₃ ) (15). Reactions of 10 with the silane H₃ SiPh and the borane HBcat furnished products of 1,3 addition to the nitrilimine moiety NacNacGa{N(ER_n )NCSiMe₃ }(CH₂ SiMe₃ ), whereas reaction with the diborane B₂ cat₂ gave the product of formal nitrene insertion into the B-B bond. DFT calculations suggest that the interaction of 9 with N₂ CHSiMe₃ proceeds through intermediate formation of an alkylidene compound that undergoes CH activation with a second molecule of N₂ CHSiMe₃ . Insertion into the B-B bond likely proceeds through an initial 1,3-addition of the diborane, followed by boryl migration to the former nitrene center.

Transition Metal Carbide Complexes

Carbide complexes remain a rare class of molecules. Their paucity does not reflect exceptional instability but is rather due to the generally narrow scope of synthetic procedures for constructing carbide complexes. The preparation of carbide complexes typically revolves around generating L_nM-CE_x fragments, followed by cleavage of the C-E bonds of the coordinated carbon-based ligands (the alternative being direct C atom transfer). Prime examples involve deoxygenation of carbonyl ligands and deprotonation of methyl ligands, but several other p-block fragments can be cleaved off to afford carbide ligands. This Review outlines synthetic strategies toward terminal carbide complexes, bridging carbide complexes, as well as carbide-carbonyl cluster complexes. It then surveys the reactivity of carbide complexes, covering stoichiometric reactions where the carbide ligands act as C₁ reagents, engage in cross-coupling reactions, and enact Fischer-Tropsch-like chemistry; in addition, we discuss carbide complexes in the context of catalysis. Finally, we examine spectroscopic features of carbide complexes, which helps to establish the presence of the carbide functionality and address its electronic structure.

Understanding, Modulating, and Leveraging Transannular M → Z Interactions

Density functional theory calculations have been performed on metallatranes featuring a group 13 elements at the bridgehead position to understand the factors that influence the nature of the M···Z (M = Fe, Co, Ni; Z = Al, Ga, In) interaction present in these complexes and the resultant reactivity at the metal center. The strength of the M···Z interaction increases with the increase in the size and polarizability of the bridgehead group 13 elements. The calculated reaction free energies (ΔG° values) for binding of different Lewis bases to the metallatranes are found to be significantly more exergonic for the larger In(III) ions. Quantum theory of atoms in molecules calculations reveal the covalent nature of the M···Z interactions, while the EDA-NOCV analysis indicates the strong binding ability of these metallatranes not only to different σ-donor and π-acceptor ligands but also to relatively inert species, such as N₂.

Charge frustration in ligand design and functional group transfer

Molecules with different resonance structures of similar importance, such as heterocumulenes and mesoionics, are prominent in many applications of chemistry, including 'click chemistry', photochemistry, switching and sensing. In coordination chemistry, similar chameleonic/schizophrenic entities are referred to as ambidentate/ambiphilic or cooperative ligands. Examples of these had remained, for a long time, limited to a handful of archetypal compounds that were mere curiosities. In this Review, we describe ambiphilicity - or, rather, 'charge frustration' - as a general guiding principle for ligand design and functional group transfer. We first give a historical account of organic zwitterions and discuss their electronic structures and applications. Our discussion then focuses on zwitterionic ligands and their metal complexes, such as those of ylidic and redox-active ligands. Finally, we present new approaches to single-atom transfer using cumulated small molecules and outline emerging areas, such as bond activation and stable donor-acceptor ligand systems for reversible 1e^- chemistry or switching.

Cobalt Diazo-Compounds: From Nitrilimide to Isocyanoamide via a Diazomethanediide Fleeting Intermediate

Lithium trimethylsilyldiazomethanide and a cobalt (II) precursor with an N-anchored tris-NHC (TIMEN^mes ) ligand provide access to the cobalt nitrilimide 1. Complex 1 was structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffractometry (SC-XRD) and its electronic structure was examined in detail, including EPR spectroscopy, SQUID magnetometry and computational analyses. The desilylation of the C-(trimethylsilyl)nitrilimide reveals a transient complex with an elusive diazomethanediide ligand, which substitutes one of the mesitylene rings of the ancillary ligand through C-N bond cleavage. This transformation results in the cyclometalated cobalt(II) complex 2, featuring a rare isocyanoamido-κ-C ligand.

C-H Activation by an Iron-Nitrido Bis-Pocket Porphyrin Species

High-valent iron-nitrido species are nitrogen analogues of iron-oxo species which are versatile reagents for C-H oxidation. Nonetheless, C-H activation by iron-nitrido species has been scarcely explored, as this is often hampered by their instability and short lifetime in solutions. Herein, the hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) reactivity of an Fe porphyrin nitrido species (2 c) toward C-H substrates was studied in solutions at room temperature, which was achieved by nanosecond laser flash photolysis (LFP) of its Fe^III -azido precursor (1 c) supported by a bulky bis-pocket porphyrin ligand. C-H bonds with bond dissociation enthalpies (BDEs) of up to ≈84 kcal mol^-1 could be activated, and the second-order rate constants (k₂ ) are on the order of 10² -10⁴  s^-1  m^-1 . The Fe-amido product formed after HAT could further release ammonia upon protonation.

Ligand Tailoring Toward an Air-Stable Iron(V) Nitrido Complex

A new supporting ligand, tris-[2-(3-mesityl-imidazol-2-ylidene)methyl]amine (TIMMN^Mes), was developed and utilized to isolate an air-stable iron(V) complex bearing a terminal nitrido ligand, which was synthesized by one-electron oxidation from the iron(IV) precursor. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses of both complexes reveal that the metal-centered oxidation is escorted by iron nitride (Fe≡N) bond elongation, which in turn is accompanied by the accommodation of the high-valence iron center closer to the equatorial plane of a trigonal bipyramid. This contrasts with the previous observation of the only other literature-known Fe(IV)≡N/Fe(V)≡N redox pair, namely, [PhB(^tBuIm)₃FeN]^0/+. On the basis of ⁵⁷Fe Mössbauer, EPR, and UV/vis electronic absorption spectroscopy as well as quantum chemical calculations, we identified the lesser degree of pyramidalization around the iron atom, the Jahn-Teller distortion, and the resulting nature of the SOMO to be the decisive factors at play.

A Terminal Iron Nitrilimine Complex: Accessing the Terminal Nitride through Diazo N-N Bond Cleavage

A novel method for the N−N bond cleavage of trimethylsilyl diazomethane is reported for the synthesis of terminal nitride complexes. The lithium salt of trimethylsilyl diazomethane was used to generate a rare terminal nitrilimine transition metal complex with partially occupied d‐orbitals. This iron complex 2 was characterized by CHN combustion analysis, ¹H and ¹³C NMR spectroscopic analysis, single‐crystal X‐ray crystallography, SQUID magnetometry, ⁵⁷Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy, and computational analysis. The combined results suggest a high‐spin d ⁶ (S=2) electronic configuration and an allenic structure of the nitrilimine ligand. Reduction of 2 results in release of the nitrilimine ligand and formation of the iron(I) complex 3, which was characterized by CHN combustion analysis, ¹H NMR spectroscopic analysis, and single‐crystal X‐ray crystallography. Treatment of 2 with fluoride salts quantitatively yields the diamagnetic Fe^IV nitride complex 4, with concomitant formation of cyanide and trimethylsilyl fluoride through N−N bond cleavage.
