Abstract
The reaction between 1,3-bis(3,5-dimethylpyrazolylmethyl)hexahydropyrimidine L and Mo(CO)6 in CH3CN at 130 °C afforded a binuclear Mo(0) complex 1 containing a new macrocycle formed upon C-N bond cleavage in L in good yield. Conversely, a clean reaction takes place between L and [Mo(CO)4(COD)] in THF at 60 °C to give a new metalloligand complex [Mo(CO)4(κ2-N,N-L)] 2 containing a spectator pyrazole arm in 83% yield. Their structures were determined by X-ray diffraction methods, and a plausible mechanism is proposed for the C-N bond cleavage leading to complex 1. In view of a limited number of reports of catalysts for the synthesis of 1,3,5-trisubstituted benzene from the [2 + 2 + 2] cycloaddition of terminal alkynes, the catalytic application of complex 2 was explored. Interestingly, 14 terminal alkynes including those containing polar functional groups such as OH, NH2, and CHO among others were converted into their 1,3,5-isomers as the major products with a high regioselectivity ratio of >90 : 10 (1,3,5-/1,2,4-isomer) for most cases.

Abstract
Light energy conversion often relies on photosensitizers with long-lived excited states, which are mostly made of precious metals such as ruthenium or iridium. Photoactive complexes based on highly abundant iron seem attractive for sustainable energy conversion, but this remains very challenging due to the short excited state lifetimes of the current iron complexes. This study shows that a luminescent Fe(III) complex sensitizes triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion with anthracene derivatives via underexplored doublet-triplet energy transfer, which is assisted by preassociation between the photosensitizer and the annihilator. In the presence of an organic mediator, the green-to-blue upconversion efficiency ΦUC with 9,10-diphenylanthracene (DPA) as the annihilator achieves a 6-fold enhancement to ∼0.2% in aerated solution at room temperature. The singlet excited state of DPA, accessed via photon upconversion in the Fe(III)/DPA pair, allows efficient photoredox catalytic radical polymerization of acrylate monomers in a spatially controlled manner, whereas this process is kinetically hindered with the prompt DPA. Our study provides a new strategy of using low-cost iron and low-energy visible light for efficient polymer synthesis, which is a significant step for both fundamental research and future applications.

Abstract
Many photocatalysts were initially developed or used as emitters for organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). This feature article summarizes the different generations of OLED emitters and connects the photophysical processes with those relevant for photocatalysis. The focus is on the general properties OLED emitters and photocatalysts are designed for and how photocatalysis has benefitted from OLED research. Sometimes optimization of an OLED emitter leads to a better photocatalyst while some properties are optimized into opposite directions. To discover new classes of photocatalysts in the future it is important to consider what good OLED emitters and good photocatalyst have in common and where they diverge. Within recent years, fully organic thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters had the most significant impact in both fields and thus are discussed with specific focus.

Abstract
Because of the complex structure and inherent inert chemical activity of lignin, it is still challenging to depolymerize lignin to obtain valuable chemicals efficiently. Here, we present an FeCl3-promoted photocatalytic depolymerization strategy to realize the Cα-Cβ oxidative cleavage of lignin model compounds at room temperature. The method generates benzoic acid and phenol compounds in high yields. In addition, the method is effective for the depolymerization of organosolv lignin by cleavage of the products of Cα-Cβ bonds and affords the corresponding products. This strategy provides a method of using an economical photocatalyst to depolymerize lignin and provides a reference for the industrial depolymerization of lignin.

Abstract
The transformation of CO2 into value-added products from an impure CO2 stream, such as flue gas or exhaust gas, directly contributes to the principle of carbon capture and utilization (CCU). Thus, we have developed a robust iron-based heterogeneous photocatalyst that can convert the exhaust gas from the car into CO with an exceptional production rate of 145 μmol g-1 h-1. We characterized this photocatalyst by PXRD, XPS, ssNMR, EXAFS, XANES, HR-TEM, and further provided mechanistic experiments, and multi-scale/level computational studies. We have reached a clear understanding of its properties and performance that indicates that this highly robust photocatalyst could be used to design an efficient visible-light-mediated reduction strategy for the transformation of impure CO2 streams into value-added products.

Abstract
Homogeneous gold catalysis has attracted much recent attention due to diverse activation modes of gold(i) towards unsaturated organic groups. Because of attractive aurophilic interaction, structural transformations of metalated species into high nuclear clusters are often proposed in gold catalysis, while to date little is known about their assembly behaviors and catalytic activity. In this work, based on stoichiometric Au(i)-mediated enyne cyclization reactions, we achieve a discrete vicinal dicarbanion-centered Au4 intermediate and three assembled Au11, Au28, and Au14 clusters held together by several aryl dicarbanions. Spectral monitoring, kinetic and theoretical investigations confirm that these discrete and assembled intermediates display four different pathways upon catalyzing the cyclization reaction of the same 1,5-enyne substrate. The discrete Au4 cluster undergoes a full protodeauration process to generate active [Au(PPh3)]+ species for catalytic use. In contrast, the net-like Au11 cluster experiences a substrate-induced dissociation to generate a semi-stable Au10 unit and an active [alkyne-Au(PPh3)]+ fragment for further transformation. The dumbbell-like Au28 cluster is prone to cleavage of the central Au-Au linkage and each Au14 moiety exposes a coordination unsaturated site to activate a substrate molecule. However, the synthetic closed-Au14 cluster with full ligand protection is no longer catalytically active.

Abstract
In this paper, the regioselectivity of electrochemical Co(II)-catalyzed [2 + 2 + 2] cycloaddition of terminal alkynes was investigated using density functional theory. We explored in detail the energy profiles for both 1,2,4- and 1,3,5-regioselectivity pathways and revealed the origin of the regioselectivity. Two kinds of conformational isomers derived from the different coordination modes of alkynes with cobaltacyclopentadiene have been found, which were formed through electrochemically mediated redox processes. The regioselectivity of the reaction depends on the two coordination modes. When the Co(II) center attacks α-C of the third alkyne, while β2-C in cyclopentadiene bonds to β-C of the alkyne, the reaction favors the formation of 1,2,4-products. In contrast, when the Co(II) center connects to β-C of the alkyne, it forms only the 1,3,5-products via [4 + 2] cycloaddition because of the steric repulsion between the bulky ligand on Co(II) and the phenyl group in the alkyne.

Abstract
We report an efficient iron-catalyzed cycloaddition procedure leading to the construction of (hetero)aromatic rings by alkyne [2+2+2] cycloisomerization. This method relies on the use of an air-stable (N,N)Fe(II) precursor easily prepared from a commercially available ligand derived from 1,10-phenanthroline, reduced in situ into a catalytically active non-innocent (N,N ⋅-)2Fe(II) species. This system displays a large scope application, operates under mild conditions and at low catalytic charges (25 cycloadducts formed, up to 1.5 mol% catalyst). Moreover, this method also enables access to 29 cycloadducts by cross-cycloisomerization between 1,6- or 1,7-diynes and alkynes in near-equimolar conditions. 1,3,5-Triazines can also be prepared with this procedure starting from the corresponding cyanamides. Scale-up reactions and post-functionalization of several cycloadducts also show that this [2+2+2] cycloaddition can be used in multistep sequences.

Abstract
Iron-catalyzed C-H activation has recently emerged as an increasingly powerful synthetic method for the step- and atom- economical direct C-H functionalizations of otherwise inert C-H bonds. Iron's low-cost and toxicity along with its catalytic versatility have encouraged the scientific community to elect this metal for the development of new C-H activation methodologies. Within this review, we aim to present a collection of the most recent examples of iron-catalyzed C-H functionalizations with a particular emphasis on modern synthetic strategies and mechanistic aspects.

Abstract
We report a selectivity-switchable nickel hydride-catalyzed methodology that enables the stereocontrolled semi-reduction of internal alkynes to E- or Z-alkenes under very mild conditions. The proposed transfer semi-hydrogenation process involves the use of a dual nickel/photoredox catalytic system and triethylamine, not only as a sacrificial reductant, but also as a source of hydrogen atoms. Mechanistic studies revealed a pathway involving photo-induced generation of nickel hydride, syn-hydronickelation of alkyne, and alkenylnickel isomerization as key steps. Remarkably, mechanistic experiments indicate that the control of the stereoselectivity is not ensuing from a post-reduction alkene photoisomerization under our conditions. Instead, we demonstrate that the stereoselectivity of the reaction is dependent on the rate of a final protonolysis step which can be tuned by adjusting the pKa of an alcohol additive.

Abstract
Enhancing catalytic activity through synergic effects is a current challenge in homogeneous catalysis. In addition to the well-established metal-metal and metal-ligand cooperation, we showcase here an example of self-activation by the substrate in controlling the catalytic activity of the two-coordinate iron complex [Fe(2,6-Xyl2C6H3)2] (1, Xyl = 2,6-Me2C6H3). This behavior was observed for aryl acetylenes in their regioselective cyclotrimerization to 1,2,4-(aryl)-benzenes. Two kinetically distinct regimes are observed dependent upon the substrate-to-catalyst ratio ([RC≡CH]0/[1]0), referred to as the low ([RC≡CH]0/[1]0 < 40) and high ([RC≡CH]0/[1]0 > 40) regimes. Both showed sigmoidal kinetic response, with positive Hill indices of 1.85 and 3.62, respectively, and nonlinear Lineweaver-Burk replots with an upward curvature, which supports positive substrate cooperativity. Moreover, two alkyne molecules participate in the low regime, whereas up to four are involved in the high regime. The second-order rate dependence on 1 indicates that binuclear complexes are the catalytically competent species in both regimes, with that in the high one being 6 times faster than that involved in the low one. Moreover, Eyring plot analyses revealed two different catalytic cycles, with a rate-determining step more endergonic in the low regime than in the high one, but with a more ordered transition state in the high regime than in the low one.

Abstract
Irradiation of cobalt metallocenes at the ligand-to-metal charge transfer energies results in the labilization of the cyclopentadienyl-cobalt bond and radical release. The cyclopentadienyl radical is detected by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy using a spin trap and can also be chemically trapped using hydrogen-atom-donating reagents. This reaction presents a new photochemical method of generating new cobalt complexes or of forming cyclopentadienyl cobalt(I) species that are active for catalytic [2 + 2 + 2] cyclotrimerization reactions. More importantly, these results also show that cobaltocene should not be considered as a photostable redox reagent under many conditions, including those relevant to photovoltaics or photocatalysis.

Abstract
Photosensitization of organometallics is a privileged strategy that enables challenging transformations in transition-metal catalysis. However, the usefulness of such photocatalyst-induced energy transfer has remained opaque in iron-catalyzed reactions despite the intriguing prospects of iron catalysis in synthetic chemistry. Herein, we demonstrate the use of iron/photosensitizer-cocatalyzed cycloaddition to synthesize polyarylpyridines and azafluoranthenes, which have been scarcely accessible using the established iron-catalyzed protocols. Mechanistic studies indicate that triplet energy transfer from the photocatalyst to a ferracyclic intermediate facilitates the thermally demanding nitrile insertion and accounts for the distinct reactivity of the hybrid system. This study thus provides the first demonstration of the role of photosensitization in overcoming the limitations of iron catalysis.

Abstract
AbstractMetal-catalyzed [2+2+2] cycloaddition is a powerful tool that allows rapid construction of functionalized 6-membered carbo- and heterocycles in a single step through an atom-economical process with high functional group tolerance. The reaction is usually regio- and chemoselective although selectivity issues can still be challenging for intermolecular reactions involving the cross-[2+2+2] cycloaddition of two or three different alkynes and various strategies have been developed to attain high selectivities. Furthermore, enantioselective [2+2+2] cycloaddition is an efficient means to create central, axial, and planar chirality and a variety of chiral organometallic complexes can be used for asymmetric transition-metal-catalyzed inter- and intramolecular reactions. Abstract
A mixture of HBPin with KOtBu was found to activate cobalt salt to form a heterotopic cobalt species that is highly active for catalytic intermolecular trimerization of alkynes. This protocol affords 1,2,4-regioisomers in good yields with high regioselectivities under mild conditions. These salient features, together with the operational simplicity and high efficiency, as well as obviating the use of any costly and/or air sensitive ligands, renders the protocol promising for practical applications.

Abstract
Homogeneous earth-abundant metal catalysis based on well-defined molecular complexes has achieved great advance in synthetic methodologies. However, sophisticated ligand, hazardous activator and multistep synthesis starting from base metal salts are generally required for the generation of active molecular catalysts, which may hinder their broad application in large scale organic synthesis. Therefore, the development of metal cluster catalysts formed in situ from simple earth-abundant metal salts is of importance for the practical utilization of base metal resource, yet it is still in its infancy. Herein, a mixture of catalytic amounts of cobalt (II) iodide and potassium tert-butoxide is discovered to be highly active for selective hydroboration of vinylarenes and dihydroboration of nitriles, affording a good yield of diversified hydroboration products that without isolation can readily undergo further one pot transformations. It should be highlighted that the alkoxide-pinacolborane combination acts as an efficient activation strategy to activate cobalt (II) iodide for the generation of metastable heterotopic cobalt catalysts in situ, which is proposed to be catalytically active species. Homogeneous earth-abundant metal catalysis based on well-defined metal complexes is of interest for organic synthesis, but typically employs expensive catalysts, air sensitive or synthetically challenging chemicals. Here, the authors report an efficient and regio-selective catalytic system for hydroboration of vinylarenes and organic nitriles with HBPin, using commercially available CoI2 and KOtBu under ligand-free conditions.

Abstract
Herein we report a hydrogen-bonding controlled nickel-catalyzed regioselective cyclotrimerization of terminal alkynes in moderate to excellent yields with high regioselectivities toward 1,3,5-trisubstituted benzenes. This method features a cheap catalyst, mild reaction conditions, and excellent functional group compatibility. The Ni-B(OH)2 complex in situ generated from NiCl2·DME and tetrahydroxydiboron might act as an active catalyst. After three consecutive cis-additions of terminal alkynes, internal migratory insertion cyclization, and β-boron elimination induced aromatization, 1,3,5-trisubstituted benzenes were selectively established.

Abstract
Visible light photocatalysis has become a powerful tool in organic synthesis that uses photons as traceless, sustainable reagents. Most of the activities in the field focus on the development of new reactions via common photoredox cycles, but recently a number of exciting new concepts and strategies entered less charted territories. We survey approaches that enable the use of longer wavelengths and show that the wavelength and intensity of photons are import parameters that enable tuning of the reactivity of a photocatalyst to control or change the selectivity of chemical reactions. In addition, we discuss recent efforts to substitute strong reductants, such as elemental lithium and sodium, by light and technological advances in the field.

Abstract
Metalcyclopentadienyl complexes (MCp)+ (M = Fe, Ru, Os) bound to the large polyaromatic hydrogenated hydrocarbon (PAH) C96H24 used as a model for pristine graphene have been studied using a density functional theory (DFT) generalized gradient approximation (PBE functional) to reveal their structural features and dynamic behavior. The inter-ring haptotropic rearrangements (IRHRs) for these complexes were shown to occur via two transition states and one intermediate. The energy barriers of the η6 ⇌ η6 IRHRs of the (MCp)+ unit were found to be 30, 27, and 29 kcal/mol for M = Fe, Ru, and Os, respectively. These values are significantly lower than the values found previously for smaller PAHs. Both polar and nonpolar solvents were found not to affect significantly the energy barrier heights. Investigated transition metal complexes could be used in general as catalysts in the design of novel derivatives or materials with promising properties. Metalcyclopentadienyl complexes (MCp)+ of PAHs show catalytic properties mainly due to their structural details as well as their important characteristic of inter-ring haptotropic rearrangement. IRHRs take place usually by intramolecular mechanisms. During IRHRs, the MLn organometallic groups (OMGs) undergo shifting along the PAH plane and could coordinate additional reagents, which is important for catalysis. Large PAHs such as graphene, fullerenes, and nanotubes possess intrinsic anticancer activity, and numerous arene complexes of Ru and Os have been proven to have anticancer properties as well. We suppose that coordinating Ru or Os to very large PAHs could synergistically increase the anticancer activity of resulting complexes.

Abstract
An efficient, metal-free protocol for the three-component sulfonylative pyridylation of styrenes via organic-photoredox catalysis is described. This metal-free process enables the direct and selective installation of sulfonyl and heteroaryl motifs and tolerates a wide array of functional groups as well as complex molecular scaffolds, that could complement previous methods and would be of interest in pharmaceutical research. An efficient, metal-free protocol for the three-component sulfonylative pyridylation of alkenes via organic-photoredox catalysis is described.![]()

Abstract
Asymmetric transition-metal catalysis represents a fascinating challenge in the field of organic chemistry research. Since seminal advances in the late 60s, which were finally recognized by the Nobel Prize to Noyori, Sharpless and Knowles in 2001, the scientific community explored several approaches to emulate nature in producing chiral organic molecules. In a scenario that has been for a long time dominated by the use of late-transition metals (TM) catalysts, the use of 3d-TMs and particularly iron has found, recently, a widespread application. Indeed, the low toxicity and the earth-abundancy of iron, along with its chemical versatility, allowed for the development of unprecedented and more sustainable catalytic transformations. While several competent reviews tried to provide a complete picture of the astounding advances achieved in this area, within this review we aimed to survey the latest achievements and new concepts brought in the field of enantioselective iron-catalyzed transformations.
