Abstract
2,2'-Bipyridine has been identified as a privileged ligand scaffold for photofunctional transition metal complexes. We herein report on the synthesis and photoproperties of an insulated π-conjugated 2,2'-bipyridine with a linked rotaxane structure consisting of permethylated α-cyclodextrin (PM α-CD) and oligo(p-phenylene ethynylene). The insulated π-conjugated 2,2'-bipyridine exhibited enhanced ligand performance in the solid-state emitting biscyclometalated Ir complexes and visible-light-driven Ni catalysts owing to π-extension and remote steric effects based on the linked rotaxane structure.

Abstract
Copper hydride (CuH) complexes have been proposed as key intermediates in synthesis and catalysis. Herein, we developed a highly efficient strategy for CuH-catalyzed N-methylation of aromatic and aliphatic amines using paraformaldehyde and polymethylhydrosiloxane (PMHS) under mild reaction conditions. The reaction proceeded smoothly without additives to furnish the corresponding N-methylated products using cyclic(alkyl)(amino)carbene (CAAC)CuH as a reaction intermediate, which results from a reaction between PMHS and (CAAC)CuCl.

Abstract
The mechanism of the selective protection of L-lysine mediated by β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) was investigated by preliminary experiments, including the reaction efficiency influenced by different reaction conditions, and the existence of (1a·CD)' and 1a·CD·2a was evidenced by ESI-MS and 2D Rotating Frame Overhauser Effect Spectroscopy (ROESY) analysis. The results indicated that the formation of (1a·CD)' is critical for the product selectivity and the further formation of the ternary complex 1·CD·2 is responsible for the reaction efficiency. Thus, the yields and selectivity were significantly influenced by the structure, size and reactivity of the reactants. During the mechanistic investigations, we realized that the formation of the product and the β-CD complex at the final stage of the reaction would cause difficulty in product purification by a previously reported homogeneous method. In light of this understanding, an efficient and practical protocol for selective protection of L-lys based on a heterogeneous catalyst SiO2@CD was developed. The use of the SiO2 immobilized β-CD catalyst prevented the formation of the "capped" products by controlling the spatial rearrangement of β-CDs on solid supports, which represents a considerable synthetic improvement over the tedious and wasteful organic solvent extraction for product purification.

Abstract
The presence of a permethylated α-cyclodextrin (α-CD) cavity in a chelating P,N ligand promotes exclusive formation of 1 : 1 ligand/metal complexes. In MX2 complexes, one of the two halido ligands is forced to reside inside the CD hollow while the second one is pointing outside. Unlike its cavity-free analogue, a Ni(II) complex of the CD ligand is a highly selective precatalyst for ethylene dimerisation (96% C4 selectivity with up to 95% of 1-butene within the C4 fraction).

Abstract
A highly enantioselective aza-Darzens reaction (up to 99% ee) catalyzed by an enantiopure supramolecular host has been discovered. To understand the role of host structure on reaction outcome, nine new gallium(III)-based enantiopure supramolecular assemblies were prepared via substitution of the external chiral amide. Despite the distal nature of the substitution in these catalysts, changes in enantioselectivity (61 to 90% ee) in the aziridine product were observed. The enantioselectivities were correlated to the flexibility of the supramolecular host scaffold as measured by the kinetics of exchange of a model cationic guest. This correlation led to the development of a best-in-class catalyst by substituting the gallium(III)-based host with one based on indium(III), which generated the most flexible and selective catalyst.

Abstract
Molecular capsules enable the conversion of substrates inside a closed cavity, mimicking to some extent enzymatic catalysis. Chirality transfer from the molecular capsule onto the encapsulated substrate has been only studied in a few cases. Here we demonstrate that chirality transfer is possible inside a rather large molecular container of approximately 1400 Å3 . Specifically, we present 1) the first examples of optically active hexameric resorcin[4]arene capsules, 2) their ability to enantioselectively catalyze tail-to-head terpene cyclizations, and 3) the surprisingly high sensitivity of enantioselectivity on the structural modifications.

Abstract
Multicharged cyclodextrin (CD) supramolecular assemblies, including those based on positively/negatively charged modified mono-6-deoxy-CDs, per-6-deoxy-CDs, and random 2,3,6-deoxy-CDs, as well as parent CDs binding positively/negatively charged guests, have been extensively applied in chemistry, materials science, medicine, biological science, catalysis, and other fields. In this review, we primarily focus on summarizing the recent advances in positively/negatively charged CDs and parent CDs encapsulating positively/negatively charged guests, especially the construction process of supramolecular assemblies and their applications. Compared with uncharged CDs, multicharged CDs display remarkably high antiviral and antibacterial activity as well as efficient protein fibrosis inhibition. Meanwhile, charged CDs can interact with oppositely charged dyes, drugs, polymers, and biomacromolecules to achieve effective encapsulation and aggregation. Consequently, multicharged CD supramolecular assemblies show great advantages in improving drug-delivery efficiency, the luminescence properties of materials, molecular recognition and imaging, and the toughness of supramolecular hydrogels, in addition to enabling the construction of multistimuli-responsive assemblies. These features are anticipated to not only promote the development of CD-based supramolecular chemistry but also contribute to the rapid exploitation of these assemblies in diverse interdisciplinary applications.

Abstract
Supramolecular metal–organic cages, a class of molecular containers formed via coordination-driven self-assembly, have attracted sustained attention for their applications in catalysis, due to their structural aesthetics and unique properties. Their inherent confined cavity is considered to be analogous to the binding pocket of enzymes, and the facile tunability of building blocks offers a diverse platform for enzyme mimics to promote organic reactions. This minireview covers the recent progress of supramolecular metal–organic coordination cages for boosting organic reactions as reaction vessels or catalysts. The developments in the utilizations of the metal–organic cages for accelerating the organic reactions, improving the selectivity of the reactions are summarized. In addition, recent developments and successes in tandem or cascade reactions promoted by supramolecular metal–organic cages are discussed.

Abstract
Bis-azolium salts with one azolium capping a perbenzylated α-cyclodextrin have been designed to generate Janus-type bimetallic complexes with various combinations of copper, silver, gold or palladium salts. Encapsulation of one metal center inside the cavity allowed (trans)metalation and oxidation reactions to be controlled at selected positions. In particular, it was possible to oxidize AuI into AuIII selectively on the position outside the cavity of the cyclodextrin on the bis-AuI Janus complex.

Abstract
Transition-metal catalysts are powerful tools for carbon-carbon bond-forming reactions that are difficult to achieve using native enzymes. Enzymes that exhibit inherent selectivities and reactivities through host-guest interactions have inspired widespread interest in incorporating enzymatic behavior into transition-metal catalytic systems that highly efficiently produce enantiopure compounds. Nevertheless, bio-inspired transition-metal catalysts that are highly enantioselective and reactive have rarely been reported. In this study, we applied γ-cyclodextrin-imidazolium salts to the rhodium-catalyzed asymmetric arylations of aldehydes. The method exhibits wide substrate scope and the corresponding arylcarbinols are obtained in excellent yields under optimized conditions, with enantiomeric excesses of up to 96% observed. Kinetic and competition experiments revealed that self-inclusion of the Rh complex contributes to the high enantioselectivity and reactivity achieved by this catalytic system. Thus, this bio-inspired self-inclusion strategy is promising for the development of highly enantioselective and reactive transition-metal catalysts for asymmetric carbon-carbon bond formation.

Abstract
Most ligand designs for reactions catalyzed by (NHC)Cu-H (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene ligand) have focused on introducing steric bulk near the Cu center. Here, we evaluate the effect of remote ligand modification in a series of [(NHC)CuH]2 in which the para substituent (R) on the N-aryl groups of the NHC is Me, Et, t Bu, OMe or Cl. Although the R group is distant (6 bonds away) from the reactive Cu center, the complexes have different spectroscopic signatures. Kinetics studies of the insertion of ketone, aldimine, alkyne, and unactivated α-olefin substrates reveal that Cu-H complexes with bulky or electron-rich R groups undergo faster substrate insertion. The predominant cause of this phenomenon is destabilization of the [(NHC)CuH]2 dimer relative to the (NHC)Cu-H monomer, resulting in faster formation of Cu-H monomer. These findings indicate that remote functionalization of NHCs is a compelling strategy for accelerating the rate of substrate insertion with Cu-H species.

Abstract
Chiral gold(I)-cavitand complexes have been developed for the enantioselective alkoxycyclization of 1,6-enynes. This enantioselective cyclization has been applied for the first total synthesis of carbazole alkaloid (+)-mafaicheenamine C and its enantiomer, establishing its configuration as R. The cavity effect was also evaluated in the cycloisomerization of dienynes. A combination of experiments and theoretical studies demonstrates that the cavity of the gold(I) complexes forces the enynes to adopt constrained conformations, which results in the high observed regio- and stereoselectivities.

Abstract
Cyclodextrin poly-functionalization has fueled progress in their use in multiple applications such as enzyme mimicry, but also in the polymer sciences, luminescence, as sensors or for biomedical applications. However, regioselective access to a given pattern of functions on β-cyclodextrin is still very limited. We uncover a new orienting group, the thioacetate, that expands the toolbox available for cyclodextrin poly-hetero-functionalization using diisobutylaluminum hydride (DIBAL-H) promoted debenzylation. The usefulness of this group is illustrated in the first synthesis of a precisely hepta-hetero-functionalized β-cyclodextrin. By way of comparison, a random hepta-functionalization would give 117655 different molecules. This synthesis is not simply the vain quest for the Holy Grail of CD hetero-functionalization, but it illustrates the versatility of the DIBAL-H oriented hetero-functionalization strategy, opening the way to a multitude of useful functionalization patterns for new practical applications.

Abstract
Supramolecular catalysts emulate the mechanism of enzymes to achieve large rate accelerations and precise selectivity under mild and aqueous conditions. While significant strides have been made in the supramolecular host-promoted synthesis of small molecules, applications of this reactivity to chemoselective and site-selective modification of complex biomolecules remain virtually unexplored. We report here a supramolecular system where coencapsulation of pyridine-borane with a variety of molecules including enones, ketones, aldehydes, oximes, hydrazones, and imines effects efficient reductions under basic aqueous conditions. Upon subjecting unprotected lysine to the host-mediated reductive amination conditions, we observed excellent ε-selectivity, indicating that differential guest binding within the same molecule is possible without sacrificing reactivity. Inspired by the post-translational modification of complex biomolecules by enzymatic systems, we then applied this supramolecular reaction to the site-selective labeling of a single lysine residue in an 11-amino acid peptide chain and human insulin.

Abstract
Cyclodextrins (CDs) are cyclic oligosaccharides mainly composed of six, seven, and eight glucose units, so-called α-, β-, and γ-CDs, respectively. They own a very particular molecular structure exhibiting hydrophilic features thanks to primary and secondary rims and delimiting a hydrophobic internal cavity. The latter can encapsulate organic compounds, but the former can form supramolecular complexes by hydrogen-bonding or electrostatic interactions. CDs have been used in catalytic processes to increase mass transfer in aqueous-organic two-phase systems or to prepare catalysts. In the last case, interaction between CDs and metal salts was considered to be a key point in obtaining highly active catalysts. Up to now, no work was reported on the investigation of factors affecting the binding of metal to CD. In the study herein, we present the favorable combination of electrospray ionization coupled to mass spectrometry [ESI-MS(/MS)] and density functional theory molecular modeling [B3LYP/Def2-SV(P)] to delineate some determinants governing the coordination of first-row divalent transition metals (Mn2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, and Fe2+) and one post-transition metal (Zn2+) with α-, β-, and γ-CDs. A large set of features concerning the metal itself (ionic radius, electron configuration, and spin state) as well as the complexes formed (the most stable conformer, relative abundance in MS, CE50 value in MS/MS, binding energy, effective coordination number, average bond lengths, binding site localization, bond dissociation energies, and natural bond orbital distribution) were screened. Taking into account all of these properties, various selectivity rankings have been delineated, portraying differential association/dissociation behaviors. Nonetheless, unique 3D topologies for each CD-metal complex were emphasized. The combination of these approaches brings a stone for building a compendium of molecular features to serve as a suitable descriptor or predictor for a better first round rationalization of catalytic activities.

Abstract
A Au(i)–N-heterocyclic-carbene (NHC)-edged Pd6L12 molecular metal–organic cage is assembled from a Au(i)–NHC-based bipyridyl bent ligand and Pd2+. The octahedral cage structure is unambiguously established by NMR, electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry and single crystal X-ray crystallography. The electrochemical behaviour was analyzed by cyclic voltammetry. The octahedral cage has a central cavity for guest binding, and is capable of encapsulating PF6− and BF4− anions within the cavity. A Au(i)–NHC-edged Pd6L12 molecular cage is assembled from a Au(i)–NHC-based bipyridyl bent ligand and Pd2+.![]()
