Long‐Lived Circularly Polarized Phosphorescence in Helicene‐NHC Rhenium(I) Complexes: The Influence of Helicene, Halogen, and Stereochemistry on Emission Properties

Linker-dependent control of the chiroptical properties of polymethylene-vaulted trans-bis[(β-iminomethyl)naphthoxy]platinum(II) complexes

The effects of polymethylene bridges on the chiroptical properties of trans-bis[(β-iminomethyl)naphthoxy]platinum(II) platforms were examined both experimentally and theoretically using newly designed planar chiral Pt analogues (1) having three-dimensional superstructures. A series of optically pure polymethylene-vaulted Pt complexes (R)- and (S)-1 were synthesized and characterized with regard to the chiroptical behaviour of the trans-bis[(β-iminomethyl)naphthoxy]platinum(II) platforms. These complexes were found to exhibit structure-dependent chiroptical characteristics in solution, such that the absolute values of specific rotation, the circular dichroism dissymmetry factor (gabs) and the circularly polarized luminescence dissymmetry factor (glum) all increased upon shortening the polymethylene bridges. Density functional theory and time dependent density functional theory calculations were used to analyse vaulted and non-vaulted complexes, which demonstrated that the present linker-dependent chiroptical properties resulted from constraint-induced changes in the square planar Pt coordination centres rather than from chiral distortion along the coordination platforms.

B,N-Embedded Hetero[9]helicene Toward Highly Efficient Circularly Polarized Electroluminescence

The intrinsic helical π-conjugated skeleton makes helicenes highly promising for circularly polarized electroluminescence (CPEL). Generally, carbon helicenes undergo low external quantum efficiency (EQE), while the incorporation of a multi-resonance thermally activated delayed fluorescence (MR-TADF) BN structure has led to an improvement. However, the reported B,N-embedded helicenes all show low electroluminescence dissymmetry factors (gEL), typically around 1×10-3. Therefore, the development of B,N-embedded helicenes with both a high EQE and gEL value is crucial for achieving highly efficient CPEL. Herein, a facile approach to synthesize B,N-embedded hetero[9]helicenes, BN[9]H, is presented. BN[9]H shows a bright photoluminescence with a maximum at 578 nm with a high luminescence dissymmetry factor (|glum|) up to 5.8×10-3, attributed to its inherited MR-TADF property and intrinsic helical skeleton. Furthermore, circularly polarized OLED devices incorporating BN[9]H as an emitter show a maximum EQE of 35.5 %, a small full width at half-maximum of 48 nm, and, more importantly, a high |gEL| value of 6.2×10-3. The Q-factor (|EQE×gEL|) of CP-OLEDs is determined to be 2.2×10-3, which is the highest among helicene analogues. This work provides a new approach for the synthesis of higher helicenes and paves a new way for the construction of highly efficient CPEL materials.

Boosting Circularly Polarized Luminescence from Alkyl-Locked Axial Chirality Scaffold by Restriction of Molecular Motions

Boosting the circularly polarized luminescence of small organic molecules has been a stubborn challenge because of weak structure rigidity and dynamic molecular motions. To investigate and eliminate these factors, here, we carried out the structure-property relationship studies on a newly-developed axial chiral scaffold of bidibenzo[b,d]furan. The molecular rigidity was finely tuned by gradually reducing the alkyl-chain length. The environmental factors were considered in solution, crystal, and polymer matrix at different temperatures. As a result, a significant amplification of the dissymmetry factor glum from 10-4 to 10-1 was achieved, corresponding to the situation from (R)-4C in solution to (R)-1C in polymer film at room temperature. A synergistic strategy of increasing the intramolecular rigidity and enhancing the intermolecular interaction to restrict the molecular motions was thus proposed to improve circularly polarized luminescence. The though-out demonstrated relationship will be of great importance for the development of high-performance small organic chiroptical systems in the future.

Circularly polarized phosphorescence with a large dissymmetry factor from a helical platinum(II) complex

A chiral platinum(II) complex with a helical Schiff-base [4]helicene ligand exhibits intense red circularly polarized phosphorescence (CPP) with a glum of 0.010 in the dilute solution state. The intense CPP was caused by a change in the electronic transition character based on the induction of the helical structure.

Chiroptical activity of benzannulated N-heterocyclic carbene rhenium(I) tricarbonyl halide complexes: towards efficient circularly polarized luminescence emitters

The design of enantiomerically pure circularly polarized luminescent (CPL) emitters would enormously benefit from the accurate and in-depth interpretation of the chiroptical properties by means of jointly (chiroptical) photophysical measurements and state-of-the-art theoretical investigation. Herein, computed and experimental (chiro-)optical properties of a series of eight enantiopure phosphorescent rhenium(I) tricarbonyl complexes are systematically compared in terms of electronic circular dichroism (ECD) and CPL. The compounds have general formula fac-[ReX(CO)3(N^CNHC)], where N^CNHC is a pyridyl benzannulated N-heterocyclic carbene deriving from a (substituted) 2-(pyridin-2-yl)imidazo[1,5-a]pyridin-2-ium proligand and X = Cl, Br and I, and display structured red phosphorescence with long-lived (τ = 7.0-19.1 μs) excited-state lifetime and dissymmetry factors |gLum| up to 4 × 10-3. The mixing of the character of the lowest-lying emitting triplet excited state is finely modulated between ligand centred (3LC), metal-to-ligand charge transfer (3MLCT) and halogen-to-ligand charge transfer (3XLCT) by the nature of the ancillary halogen and the chromophoric N^CNHC ligand. The study unravels the effect exerted by the nature of the excited state onto the ECD and CPL activity and will help to pave the way to construct efficient CPL emitters by chemical design.

Kinetically Controlled Structural Modulation of the Self-Assembled Silver Nanoclusters

Metal nanoclusters (NCs) with atomic precision are growing into a fascinating class of building blocks for supramolecular chemistry. What makes it more interesting is the enhanced optical properties of the ordered structures, including aggregation-induced emission (AIE). However, algorithm dictating the self-assembly of metal NCs in multicomponent environment remains largely unknown, and effective means to manipulate the self-assembly is still lacking, especially under kinetic control. Herein, nanofibers which contain sub-1 nm nanowires and exhibit circularly polarized phosphorescence (CPP) are obtained from crystallization-induced self-assembly (CISA) of water-soluble, negatively charged silver NCs (Ag9 -NCs) in the presence of glutamic acid (Glu). By the introduction of a positively-charged additive (choline chloride, CC), the structure of the nanowires is modulated and the lateral interaction between adjacent nanofibers is adjusted, leading to simultaneous improvement of the phosphorescence and chirality which finally enhances CPP. Importantly, changing the time at which CC is introduced altered the kinetic pathway of the CISA, which enables to effectively manipulate both the final structures of the self-assembled Ag9 -NCs and the output of the optical signals.

Unusual Effects of the Metal Center Coordination Mode on the Photophysical Behavior of the Rhenium(I) and Rhenium(I)-Iridium(III) Complexes

Binuclear transition-metal complexes based on conjugated systems containing coordinating functions are potentially suitable for a wide range of applications, including light-emitting materials, sensors, light-harvesting systems, photocatalysts, etc., due to energy-transfer processes between chromophore centers. Herein we report on the synthesis, characterization, photophysical, and theoretical studies of relatively rare rhenium(I) and rhenium(I)-iridium(III) dyads prepared by using the nonsymmetrical polytopic ligands (NN2 and NN3) with the strongly conjugated phenanthroline and imidazole-quinoline/pyridine coordinating fragments. Availability of these different diimine chelating functions and targeted synthetic procedures allowed one to obtain a series of mononuclear (Re and Ir) and binuclear (Re-Re and Re-Ir) metal complexes with various modes of {Re(CO)3Cl} and {Ir(NC)2} metal fragment coordination. The obtained compounds were characterized by 1D 1H and 2D (COSY and NOESY) NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, elemental analysis, and X-ray diffraction crystallography. The photophysical study of the complexes (absorption, excitation and emission spectra, quantum yields, and excited-state lifetimes) showed that their emission parameters display strong dependence on the manner of metal center coordination to the diimine bidentate functions. The mononuclear complexes with an unoccupied imidazole-quinoline/pyridine fragment [Re(NN2), Re(NN3), and Ir(NC2)2(NN2)] or those containing a coordinated {Ir(NC)2} fragment in this position [Ir(NC2)2(NN1) and Re(NN2)Ir(NC1)2-Re(NN2)Ir(NC4)2] exhibit moderate-to-intense phosphorescence (quantum yields vary from 3% to 56% in a degassed solution), whereas the complexes containing a {Re(CO)3Cl} moiety in the imidazole-quinoline/pyridine position [Re2(NN2), Re2(NN3), and Ir(NC2)2(NN2)Re] demonstrate a strong reduction in the phosphorescence efficiency with a quantum yield of ≪0.1%. Quenching of the phosphorescence in the latter types of emitters is discussed in terms of a strong decrease in the radiative rate constants for these complexes compared to their analogues mentioned above, while the nonradiative constants remain nearly unchanged. Theoretical density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD DFT) calculations, including evaluation of the radiative rate constants for the couple of structurally analogous complexes with and without a {Re(CO)3Cl} moiety coordinated to the imidazole-quinoline/pyridine chelating function, confirmed the observed trend in the variation of the emission intensity.

Enhancing Circularly Polarized Phosphorescence via Integrated Top-Down and Bottom-Up Approach

In the dynamic domain of chiroptical technologies, it is imperative to engineer emitters endowed with circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) properties. This research demonstrates an advancement by employing a combined top-down and bottom-up strategy for the simultaneous amplification of photoluminescence quantum yield (Φ) and the luminescence dissymmetry factor (glum ). Square-planar Pt(II) complexes form helical assemblies, driven by torsional strain induced by bis(nonyl) chains. Integration of chiral anions leads these assemblies to prefer distinct helical sense. This arrangement activates the metal-metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MMLCT) transition that is CPL-active, with Φ and |glum | observing an upswing contingent on the charge number and aryl substituents in chiral anions. Utilizing the soft-lithographic micromolding in capillaries technique, we could fabricate exquisitely-ordered, one-dimensional co-assemblies to achieve the metrics to Φ of 0.32 and |glum | of 0.13. Finally, our spectroscopic research elucidates the underlying mechanism for the dual amplification, making a significant stride in the advancement of CPL-active emitters.

Chiroptical Response Control of Planar and Axially Chiral Polymethylene-Vaulted Platinum(II) Complexes Bearing 1,1'-Binaphthyl Frameworks

In this study, the synthesis, structure, and chiroptical response control of planar chiral polymethylene-vaulted trans-bis[(β-iminomethyl)aryloxy]platinum(II) complexes bearing axially chiral 1,1'-binaphthyl ligands are described. A series of enantiopure polymethylene (n = 4-10)-vaulted complexes were prepared in 6 steps using commercially available (R)- or (S)-BINOL as the starting material without an optical resolution process. The trans-coordination and three-dimensional vaulted structures of the platinum complexes were elucidated from X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies. The complexes were found to show structural dependence of chiroptical responses in the dilute solution state such that the absolute values of [α]D, dissymmetry factors gabs in circular dichroism (CD), and glum in circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) increased upon shortening the length of the polymethylene bridges. The enhanced chiroptical responses were theoretically investigated using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) calculations, and the results are discussed in terms of the molecular structures and transition dipole moments of the ground states. The structural dependence of the chiroptical responses was ascribed to the distortion of the coordination platforms caused by restriction of the vaulting methylene linkers.

Enantiopure cycloplatinated pentahelicenic N-heterocyclic carbenic complexes that display long-lived circularly polarized phosphorescence

The preparation of the first enantiopure cycloplatinated complexes bearing a bidentate, helicenic N-heterocyclic carbene and a diketonate ancillary ligand is presented, along with their structural and spectroscopic characterization based on both experimental and computational studies. The systems exhibit long-lived circularly polarized phosphorescence in solution and in doped films at room temperature, and also in a frozen glass at 77 K, with dissymmetry factor g_lum values ≥10^-3 in the former and around 10^-2 in the latter.

Strong Coupling of Chiral Frenkel Exciton for Intense, Bisignate Circularly Polarized Luminescence

We show that chiral Frenkel excitons yield intense circularly polarized luminescence with an intrinsic dissymmetry factor in emission g_lum as high as 0.08. This outstanding value is measured through thin films of cyanine J-aggregates that form twisted bundles. Our measurements, obtained by a Mueller polarization analysis, are artifact-free and reveal a quasi-perfect correlation between the dissymmetry factors in absorption, g_abs , and in emission g_lum . We interpret the bisignate dissymmetry factors as the signature of a strong coupling between chiral Frenkel excitons longitudinally excited along the bundles. We further resolve by polarimetry analysis the split in energy between the excited states with a Davydov splitting as small as 28 meV. We finally show the anti-Kasha nature of the chiral emission bands with opposite optical chirality. These mirror-imaged emissive chiroptical features emerge from the structural rigidity of the bundles that preserves the ground- and excited-state chirality.

Luminescent fac-[ReX(CO)3(phenyl-pyta)] (X = Cl, Br, I) complexes: influence of the halide ligand on the electronic properties in solution and in the solid state

Tricarbonylrhenium(I) complexes that incorporate a chloride ligand are promising photoluminescent materials, but those incorporating a bromide or iodide ligand have received very little attention regarding their solid-state properties. In this work, three rhenium(I) complexes differing only by the nature of their halide ligand (X = Cl, Br, and I) were compared. They are based on a fac-[ReX(CO)₃(N^N)] framework where the N^N bidentate ligand is a 3-(2-pyridyl)-1,2,4-triazole unit functionalized by an appended phenyl group. DFT calculations showed that the character of the lowest energy transitions progressively changes from Re → N^N ligand (MLCT) to X → N^N ligand (XLCT) when increasing the size of the halogen atom. Regarding the electrochemical behavior, the chloride and bromide complexes 1-Cl and 1-Br were similar, while the iodide complex 1-I exhibited a strikingly different electrochemical signature in oxidation. From a spectroscopic viewpoint, all three complexes emitted weak red-orange phosphorescence in dichloromethane solution. However, in the solid state, marked differences appeared. Not only was 1-Cl a good emitter of yellow light, but it had strong solid-state luminescence enhancement (SLE) properties. In comparison, 1-Br and 1-I were less emissive and they showed better mechanoresponsive luminescence (MRL) properties, probably related to a loose molecular arrangement in the crystal packing and to the opening of vibrational non-radiative deactivation pathways. This study highlights for the first time how the nature of the halide ligand in this type of complex allows fine tuning of the solid-state optical properties, for potential applications either in bio-imaging or in the field of MRL-active materials.

Circularly Polarized Luminescence of Cyclometalated Platinum(II) Complex Excimers: Large Difference between Isomers

A series of platinum(II) complexes bearing a chiral β-diketonato ligand and a cyclometalated ligand have been prepared. The platinum(II) complexes, (SP-4-3)-[Pt(ppy)(D-tac)] (ppy = 2-phenylpyridine, D-tac = 3-trifluoroacetyl-(D)-camphor), (SP-4-4)-[Pt(ppy)(D-tac)], (SP-4-3)-[Pt(ppy)(D-pbc)] (D-pbc = 3-perfluorobutyryl-(D)-camphor), and (SP-4-4)-[Pt(ppy)(D-pbc)], and their enantiomers were isolated and characterized by elemental analysis, NMR, and X-ray structural analysis. Photoisomerization between SP-4-3 (trans) and SP-4-4 (cis) isomers was observed. Green emission due to the monomer was observed in diluted solutions for all complexes. Higher quantum yields and longer lifetimes of green emission were observed in nonpolar solvents compared to polar solvents. The two geometrical isomers had surprisingly different excimer formation efficiencies. For the trans isomers, orange emission due to the excimers was observed in nonpolar solvents at high concentrations, whereas negligible intensities of the excimer emission were observed for the cis isomers. The formation of the excimers was evaluated by emission decay and time-resolved emission spectra. For the trans isomers, the green emission due to the monomer showed negligible CPL signals, but the orange emission gave pronounced CPL signals. The dissymmetry factors, g-values, of the excimer CPL (g_lum = 0.002) were enhanced over those of the circular dichroism (g_abs = 0.0002, g_lum/g_abs = 10). The intensities of the emission and the CPL of the excimer under oxygen were very small, although those under an argon atmosphere were very strong. Therefore, the emission color of the trans-isomers was changed from green to orange by deoxygenation.

Stereomutation and chiroptical bias in the kinetically controlled supramolecular polymerization of cyano-luminogens

The synthesis of two pairs of enantiomeric cyano-luminogens 1 and 2, in which the central chromophore is a p-phenylene or a 2,5-dithienylbenzene moiety, respectively, is described and their supramolecular polymerization under kinetic and thermodynamic control investigated. Compounds 1 and 2 form supramolecular polymers by quadruple H-bonding arrays between the amide groups and the π-stacking of the central aromatic moieties. In addition, the peripheral benzamide units are able to form intramolecularly H-bonded pseudocycles that behave as metastable monomer M* thus affording kinetically and thermodynamically controlled aggregated species AggI and AggII. The chiroptical and emissive features of compounds 1 and 2 strongly depend on the aggregation state and the nature of the central aromatic unit. Compounds 1 exhibit a bisignated dichroic response of different intensity but with similar sign for both AggI1 and AggII1 species, which suggests the formation of helical aggregates. In fact, these helical supramolecular polymers can be visualized by AFM imaging. Furthermore, both AggI and AggII species formed by the self-assembly of compounds 1 show CPL (circularly polarized light) activity of opposite sign depending on the aggregation state. Thienyl-derivatives 2 display dissimilar chiroptical, morphological and emissive characteristics for the corresponding kinetically and thermodynamically controlled aggregated species AggI and AggII in comparison to those registered for compounds 1. Thus, a stereomutation phenomenon is observed in the AggI2 → AggII2 conversion. In addition, AggI2 is arranged into nanoparticles that evolve to helical aggregates to afford AggII2. The dissimilar chiroptical and morphological features of AggI2 and AggII2 are also appreciated in the emissive properties. Thus, whilst AggI2 experiences a clear AIE (aggregation induced emission) process and CPL activity, the thermodynamically controlled AggII2 undergoes an ACQ (aggregation caused quenching) process in which the CPL activity is cancelled.

Helicenic N-heterocyclic carbene copper(I) complex displaying circularly polarized blue fluorescence

Enantiopure copper(I) chloride complexes bearing a monodentate N-(carbo[6]helicenyl)-NHC ligand have been prepared and characterized experimentally and computationally. Their high stability enables the stereochemistry to be probed by X-ray crystallography and NMR spectroscopy. The resolved enantiomeric complexes emit circularly polarized blue fluorescence with g_lum ∼1.3 × 10^-3 in solution. The photophysical and chiroptical properties of these systems, with their helicene-centred origin, are similar to those of the organic helicene-benzimidazole precursor proligand, although the reverse axial chirality configuration is preferentially observed for the complex compared to the ligand.

Comparative Study of Vibrational Raman Optical Activity with Different Time-Dependent Density Functional Approximations: The VROA36 Database

A new database, VROA36, is introduced to investigate the performance of computational approaches for vibrational Raman optical activity (VROA) calculations. The database is composed of 36 molecules with known experimental VROA spectra. It includes 93 conformers. Normal modes calculated with B3LYP-D3(BJ)/def2-TZVP are used to compute the VROA spectra with four functionals, B3LYP-D3(BJ), ωB97X-D, M11, and optimally tuned LC-PBE, as well as several basis sets. SimROA indices and frequency scaling factors are used to compare calculated spectra with each other and with experimental data. The four functionals perform equally well independently of the basis set and usually achieve good agreement with the experimental data. For molecules in near- or at-resonance conditions, the inclusion of a complex (damped) linear response approach is important to obtain physically meaningful VROA intensities. The use of any of the tested functional approximations with the def2-SVPD Gaussian-type basis set, or a basis of similar flexibility, can be recommended for efficient and reliable theoretical VROA studies.

Helical Chiral N-Heterocyclic Carbene Ligands in Enantioselective Gold Catalysis

The first chiral helicene-NHC gold(I) complexes efficient in enantioselective catalysis were prepared. The L-shaped chiral ligand is composed of an imidazo[1,5-a]pyridin-3-ylidene (IPy) scaffold laterally substituted by a configurationally stable [5]-helicenoid unit. The chiral information was introduced in a key post-functionalization step of a NHC-gold(I) complex bearing a symmetrical anionic fluoreno[5]helicene substituent, leading to a racemic mixture of complexes featuring three correlated elements of chirality, namely central, axial and helical chirality. After HPLC enantiomeric resolution, X-ray crystallography and theoretical calculations enabled structural and stereochemical characterization of these configurationally stable NHC-gold(I) complexes. The high potential in asymmetric catalysis is demonstrated in the benchmark cycloisomerization of N-tethered 1,6-enynes with up to 95 : 5 er.

Chiral Arylene Diimide Phosphors: Circularly Polarized Ambient Phosphorescence from Bischromophoric Pyromellitic Diimides

Chiral organic phosphors with circularly polarized room-temperature phosphorescence (CPP) provide new prospects to the realm of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) materials, owing to the long-lived triplet states and persistent emission. Although several molecular designs show efficient room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP), realization of ambient organic CPP remains a formidable challenge. Herein, we introduce a chiral bischromophoric phosphor design to realize ambient CPP emission by appending molecular phosphors to a chiral diaminocyclohexane core. Thus, solution-processable polymer films of the trans-1,2-diaminocyclohexane (DAC) chiral cores with heavy-atom substituted pyromellitic diimide phosphors, exhibits one of the most efficient exclusive CPP emissions with high phosphorescence quantum yield (≈18 % in air and ≈46 % under vacuum) and significant luminescence dissymmetry factor (|g_lum |≈4.0×10^-3 ).

Enhancement of Chiroptical Responses of trans-Bis[(β-iminomethyl)naphthoxy]platinum(II) Complexes with Distorted Square Planar Coordination Geometry

The relationship between the coordination geometry and photophysical properties of trans‐bis[(β‐iminomethyl)naphthoxy]platinum(II) was investigated both experimentally and theoretically. A series of platinum(II) complexes with differently substituted iminomethyl groups were synthesized, and their photophysical properties were examined in solution, in the crystalline, and in the PMMA film‐dispersed state, respectively (PMMA=poly(methyl methacrylate)). These complexes showed structure‐dependent emission spectra, in which the color of the luminescence in the crystalline state varied over a range of about 40 nm depending on the specific bowl‐shaped molecular structure. The chiral complexes with (R,R)‐ and (S,S)‐configurations were found to have structure‐dependent chiroptical properties both in solution and the PMMA film‐dispersed state such that the intensity of circular dichroism (CD) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) were enhanced with bulky cyclic substituents at the nitrogen atoms. A theoretical study using density functional theory (DFT) and time‐dependent (TD)‐DFT calculations revealed that the enhancement of chiroptical responses is due to the amplification of the magnetic dipole moment caused by the distortion of the square planar geometry.

Ruthenium Complexes Bearing Axially Chiral Bipyridyls: The Mismatched Diastereomer Showed Red Circularly Polarized Phosphorescence

Ruthenium^II complexes bearing three axially chiral bipyridyl ligands were synthesized as a new family of chiral complex dyes, and Δ-(S)- and Λ-(S)-diastereomers were obtained. The X-ray crystal structure analyses, spectroscopy, and DFT calculations suggested that all the bipyridyls maintained chirality in both the ground and excited states, and the Δ-(S)- and Λ-(S)-isomers are the matched (more relaxed) and mismatched (more constrained) pairs, respectively. The mismatched Λ-(S)-isomer exhibited red circularly polarized phosphorescence (CPP) both in solution and in the solid state. The solution state CPP is the most intense of ruthenium complexes, while the solid state CPP is the first example of them. It is supposed that, for the Λ-(S)-isomer, the six cumulative CH/π interactions suppress further distortion in the T₁ state.

Two-Dimensional Chiral Polyrotaxane Monolayer with Emergent and Steerable Circularly Polarized Luminescence

Here, we propose a mechanically interlocked strategy to achieve a 2D chiral polyrotaxane (2D CPR) monolayer with emergent and steerable CPL activity by utilizing β-cyclodextrin as the chiral wheel and a luminescent dynamic covalent organic framework as 2D polymeric axle. Such methodology, integrating host-guest and dynamic covalent chemistry, enabled the direct construction of a delaminated 2D CPR monolayer with extraordinarily large size (up to tens of micrometers) and simultaneously endowed chirality to the extended 2D CPR network to generate CPL activity. Importantly, not only the structure but also the CPL performance of the 2D CPR network can be further regulated by the feeding amount of β-cyclodextrin. This work demonstrated a monolayered 2D CPR with CPL activity for the first time. The insightful structure-property relationship of the induced CPL will be of benefit for a deeper understanding of the excited-state chirality of 2D chiral nanomaterials.

Enantioenriched Ruthenium-Tris-Bipyridine Complexes Bearing One Helical Bipyridine Ligand: Access to Fused Multihelicenic Systems and Chiroptical Redox Switches

The synthesis and photophysical and chiroptical properties of novel aza[n]helicenes (6a-d, 10a,b, n = 4-7) substituted with one or two 2-pyridyl groups are described. The preparation was performed via an adapted Mallory reaction using aromatic imines as precursors. The obtained novel class of helical 2,2'-bipyridine ligands was then coordinated to Ru(bipy)₂²⁺ units, thus affording the first diastereomerically and enantiomerically pure [RuL(bipy)₂]²⁺ (11a,c, L = 6a,c) or [Ru₂L'(bipy)₄]⁴⁺ (12, L' = 10b) complexes. The topology and stereochemistry of these novel metal-based helical architectures were studied in detail, notably using X-ray crystallography. Interestingly, the coordination to ruthenium(II) enabled the preparation of fused multihelical systems incorporating aza- and ruthena-helicenes within the same scaffold. The photophysical, chiroptical, and redox properties of these complexes were examined in detail, and efficient redox-triggered chiroptical switching activity was evidenced.

Twist to Boost: Circumventing Quantum Yield and Dissymmetry Factor Trade-Off in Circularly Polarized Luminescence

Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) enables promising applications in asymmetric photonics. However, the performances of CPL molecules do not yet meet the requirements of these applications. The shortcoming originates from the trade-off in CPL between the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and the photoluminescence dissymmetry factor (g_PL). In this study, we developed a molecular strategy to circumvent this trade-off. Our approach takes advantage of the strong propensity of [Pt(N^C^N)Cl], where the N^C^N ligand is 1-(2-oxazoline)-3-(2-pyridyl)phenylate, to form face-to-face stacks. We introduced chiral substituents, including (S)-methyl, (R)- and (S)-isopropyl, and (S)-indanyl groups, into the ligand framework. This asymmetric control induces torsional displacements that give homohelical stacks of the Pt(II) complexes. X-ray single-crystal structure analyses for the (S)-isopropyl Pt(II) complex reveal the formation of a homohelical dimer with a Pt···Pt distance of 3.48 Å, which is less than the sum of the van der Waals radii of Pt. This helical stack elicits the metal-metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MMLCT) transition that exhibits strong chiroptical activity due to the electric transition moment making an acute angle to the magnetic transition moment. The PLQY and g_PL values of the MMLCT phosphorescence emission of the (S)-isopropyl Pt(II) complex are 0.49 and 8.4 × 10^-4, which are improved by factors of ca. 6 and 4, respectively, relative to the values of the unimolecular emission (PLQY, 0.078; g_PL, 2.4 × 10^-4). Our photophysical measurements for the systematically controlled Pt(II) complexes reveal that the CPL amplifications depend on the chiral substituent. Our investigations also indicate that excimers are not responsible for the enhanced chiroptical activity. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach, organic electroluminescence devices were fabricated. The MMLCT emission devices were found to exhibit simultaneous enhancements in the external quantum efficiency (EQE, 9.7%) and the electroluminescence dissymmetry factor (g_EL, 1.2 × 10^-4) over the unimolecular emission devices (EQE, 5.8%; g_EL, 0.3 × 10^-4). These results demonstrate the usefulness of using the chiroptically active MMLCT emission for achieving an amplified CPL.

Synthesis and Properties of Partially Saturated Fluorenyl-Derived [n]Helicenes Featuring an Overcrowded Alkene

The straightforward, multigram-scale synthesis of the partially saturated H₆ -fluoreno[n]helicenes (n=5 or 7) featuring a central, overcrowded alkene is described. The key cyclization step was based on an intramolecular McMurry reaction from the corresponding 1,5-diketones. Chiral stationary phase HPLC analysis and isomer separation indicate that each helicenic compound is constituted of three diastereoisomers at room temperature, i. e. the configurationally stable (R,R,P)/(S,S,M) pair of enantiomers and an apparently achiral compound resulting from the rapid interconversion between the (R,S,P) and (S,R,M) enantiomers. The partially saturated H₆ -fluoreno[n]helicenes are oxidatively aromatized to give an efficient access to the corresponding fluoreno[n]helicenes. The chiroptical properties (vibrational and electronic circular dichroism) of the chiral, enantiopure compounds have been measured and analyzed by quantum-chemical calculations, confirming their helicoidal nature.

Multinuclear Ag Clusters Sandwiched by Pt Complex Units: Fluxional Behavior and Chiral-at-Cluster Photoluminescence

Multinuclear Ag clusters sandwiched by Pt complex units were synthesized and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction and NMR studies. The sandwich-shaped multinuclear Ag complexes showed two different types of fluxional behavior in solution: rapid slippage of Pt complex units on the Ag₃ core and a reversible demetalation-metalation reaction by the treatment with Cl anion and Ag ion, respectively. The Ag₂ complex obtained by demetalation reaction from the Ag₃ complex displayed U to Z isomerization. These multinuclear Ag complexes showed strong photoluminescence whose properties depended on the existence of Pt→Ag dative bonds. The Ag₃ complex, identified to be "chiral-at-cluster", was optically resolved by the formation of a diastereomeric salt with a chiral anion. The enantiomers show circular dichroism (CD) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) properties which is unprecedented for compounds based on a chiral sandwich structure. Theoretical calculations allow to understand their structural features and photophysical properties.

Hybrids of cationic [4]helicene and N-heterocyclic carbene as ligands for complexes exhibiting (chir)optical properties in the far red spectral window

Synthesis, electronic and structural properties of a chiral NHC bearing a N-bonded cationic [4]helicene moiety are reported. This ligand is used to construct Au^I, Au^III and Rh^I complexes exhibiting far-red (chir)optical properties regardless of the metal.

Steering Nanohelix and Upconverted Circularly Polarized Luminescence by Using Completely Achiral Components

Enormous attention has been paid to upconverted circularly polarized luminescence (UC-CPL). However, so far, chiral species are still needed in UC-CPL materials, either through the covalent or noncovalent bond. Here, we report a general supramolecular coassembly approach for the fabrication of UC-CPL systems from completely achiral components. We have found that an achiral C₃-symmetric molecule could form a chiral nanohelix through symmetry breaking, which could serve as a general helical platform to endow achiral guests with induced chirality and CPL activity. Two different photon upconversion systems, namely, triplet-triplet annihilation photon upconversion (TTA-UC) donor/acceptor pairs and inorganic lanthanide upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs), are selected. When these two systems coassembled with the chiral nanohelix made from an achiral C₃-symmetric molecule, hybrid nanohelix structures formed and UC-CPL activity was induced. Through such an approach, we demonstrated that the fabrication of the UC-CPL materials does not require any chiral molecules. Moreover, we have shown that the polarization of UC-CPL can be tuned by the helicity of the nanohelix, which could be controlled through the seeded vortex. Our work provides a general approach for designing tunable UC-CPL materials from completely achiral motifs, which largely expands the research scope of the CPL materials.

Triskelion-shaped iridium-helicene NHC complex

Triskelion-shaped cycloiridiated complexes with three N-[6]helicenyl-NHC ligands were prepared with uncommon diastereoselectivities and their configurations were assigned using NMR analyses. They show strong ECD and OR, and yellow CP phosphorescence.

Schiff-base [4]helicene Zn(II) complexes as chiral emitters

The controlled preparation of chiral emissive transition metal complexes is fundamental in the field of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) active molecular materials. For this purpose, enantiopure Zn(ii) complexes 1 and 2 based on a tetradentate salen ligand surrounded by [4]helicene moieties, together with their racemic counterpart 3, have been herein synthesized. Chirality is primarily brought about by chiral 1,2-cyclohexane-diamines. Alternatively, achiral complex 4 based on ortho-phenylene-diamine has been prepared as well. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses have been performed on helicenic intermediates 8 and 9 and complexes 1 and 4. Complexes 1 and 4 display the typical tetradentate O,N,N,O coordination around Zn(ii) characteristic of salen ligands, and bear two [4]helicene moieties. The zinc complexes are luminescent in the visible range around 560 nm at room temperature in aerated solutions with the QY reaching ca. 15% for a luminescence lifetime of 5.5 ns. The optical activities of these complexes have been assessed by CD and CPL, and compared to DFT calculations.

Adsorption of Chiral [5]-Aza[5]helicenes on DNA Can Modify Its Hydrophilicity and Affect Its Chiral Architecture: A Molecular Dynamics Study

Helicenes are interesting chiral molecules without asymmetric carbon atoms but with intrinsic chirality. Functionalized 5-Aza[5]helicenes can form non-covalent complexes with anticancer drugs and therefore be potential carriers. The paper highlights the different structural selectivity for DNA binding for two enantiopure compounds and the influence of concentration on their adsorption and self-aggregation process. In this theoretical study based on atomistic molecular dynamics simulations the interaction between (M)- and (P)-5-Aza[5]helicenes with double helix B-DNA is investigated. At first the interaction of single pure enantiomer with DNA is studied, in order to find the preferred site of interaction at the major or minor groove. Afterwards, the interaction of the enantiomers at different concentrations was investigated considering both competitive adsorption on DNA and possible helicenes self-aggregation. Therefore, racemic mixtures were studied. The helicenes studied are able to bind DNA modulating or locally modifying its hydrophilic surface into hydrophobic after adsorption of the first helicene layer partially covering the negative charge of DNA at high concentration. The (P)-enantiomer shows a preferential binding affinity of DNA helical structure even during competitive adsorption in the racemic mixtures. These DNA/helicenes non-covalent complexes exhibit a more hydrophobic exposed surface and after self-aggregation a partially hidden DNA chiral architecture to the biological environment.

Dinuclear Rhenium Complexes with a Bridging Helicene-bis-bipyridine Ligand: Synthesis, Structure, and Photophysical and Chiroptical Properties

By attaching pyridine groups to a diaza[6]helicene, a helical, bis-ditopic, bis-N N-coordinating ligand can be accessed. Dinuclear rhenium complexes featuring this bridging ligand, of the form [{Re(CO)₃ Cl}₂ (N N-N N)], have been prepared and resolved to give enantiopure complexes. These complexes are phosphorescent in solution at room temperature under one- and two-photon excitation. Their experimental chiroptical properties (optical rotation, electronic circular dichroism and circularly polarized emission) have been measured. They show, for instance, emission dissymmetry factors of c.a. ±3x10^-3 . Quantum-chemical calculations indicate the importance of stereochemistry on the optical activity, pointing towards further design improvements in such types of complexes.

Beyond Chiral Organic (p-Block) Chromophores for Circularly Polarized Luminescence: The Success of d-Block and f-Block Chiral Complexes

Chiral molecules are essential for the development of advanced technological applications in spintronic and photonic. The best systems should produce large circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) as estimated by their dissymmetry factor (g _lum), which can reach the maximum values of -2 ≤ g _lum ≤ 2 when either pure right- or left-handed polarized light is emitted after standard excitation. For matching this requirement, theoretical considerations indicate that optical transitions with large magnetic and weak electric transition dipole moments represent the holy grail of CPL. Because of their detrimental strong and allowed electric dipole transitions, popular chiral emissive organic molecules display generally moderate dissymmetry factors (10^-5 ≤ g _lum ≤ 10^-3). However, recent efforts in this field show that g _lum can be significantly enhanced when the chiral organic activators are part of chiral supramolecular assemblies or of liquid crystalline materials. At the other extreme, chiral Eu^III- and Sm^III-based complexes, which possess intra-shell parity-forbidden electric but allowed magnetic dipole transitions, have yielded the largest dissymmetry factor reported so far with g _lum ~ 1.38. Consequently, 4f-based metal complexes with strong CPL are currently the best candidates for potential technological applications. They however suffer from the need for highly pure samples and from considerable production costs. In this context, chiral earth-abundant and cheap d-block metal complexes benefit from a renewed interest according that their CPL signal can be optimized despite the larger covalency displayed by d-block cations compared with 4f-block analogs. This essay thus aims at providing a minimum overview of the theoretical aspects rationalizing circularly polarized luminescence and their exploitation for the design of chiral emissive metal complexes with strong CPL. Beyond the corroboration that f-f transitions are ideal candidates for generating large dissymmetry factors, a special attention is focused on the recent attempts to use chiral Cr^III-based complexes that reach values of g _lum up to 0.2. This could pave the way for replacing high-cost rare earths with cheap transition metals for CPL applications.
