Hydrogen‐Bonding Catalyzed Ring‐Closing C−O/C−O Metathesis of Aliphatic Ethers over Ionic Liquid under Metal‐Free Conditions

Double strain-release enables formal C-O/C-F and C-N/C-F ring-opening metathesis

Metathesis reactions have been established as a powerful tool in organic synthesis. While great advances were achieved in double-bond metathesis, like olefin metathesis and carbonyl metathesis, single-bond metathesis has received less attention in the past decade. Herein, we describe the first C(sp3)-O/C(sp3)-F bond formal cross metathesis reaction between gem-difluorinated cyclopropanes (gem-DFCPs) and epoxides under rhodium catalysis. The reaction involves the formation of a highly electrophilic fluoroallyl rhodium intermediate, which is capable of reacting with the oxygen atom in epoxides as weak nucleophiles followed by C-F bond reconstruction. The use of two strained ring substrates is the key to the success of the formal cross metathesis, in which the double strain release accounts for the driving force of the transformation. Additionally, azetidine also proves to be a suitable substrate for this transformation. The reaction offers a novel approach for the metathesis of C(sp3)-O and C(sp3)-N bonds, presenting new opportunities for single-bond metathesis.

Hydrogen-Bond-Network Breakdown Boosts Selective CO2 Photoreduction by Suppressing H2 Evolution

Conventional strategies for highly efficient and selective CO2 photoreduction focus on the design of catalysts and cocatalysts. In this study, we discover that hydrogen bond network breakdown in reaction system can suppress H2 evolution, thereby improving CO2 photoreduction performance. Photosensitive poly(ionic liquid)s are designed as photocatalysts owing to their strong hydrogen bonding with solvents. The hydrogen bond strength is tuned by solvent composition, thereby effectively regulating H2 evolution (from 0 to 12.6 mmol g-1 h-1). No H2 is detected after hydrogen bond network breakdown with trichloromethane or tetrachloromethane as additives. CO production rate and selectivity increase to 35.4 mmol g-1 h-1 and 98.9 % with trichloromethane, compared with 0.6 mmol g-1 h-1 and 26.2 %, respectively, without trichloromethane. Raman spectroscopy and theoretical calculations confirm that trichloromethane broke the systemic hydrogen bond network and subsequently suppressed H2 evolution. This hydrogen bond network breakdown strategy may be extended to other catalytic reactions involving H2 evolution.

Upcycling poly(succinates) with amines to N-substituted succinimides over succinimide anion-based ionic liquids

The chemical transformation of waste polymers into value-added chemicals is of significance for circular economy and sustainable development. Herein, we report upcycling poly(succinates) (PSS) with amines into N-substituted succinimides over succinimide anion-based ionic liquids (ILs, e.g, 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene succinimide, [HDBU][Suc]). Assisted with H2O, [HDBU][Suc]) showed the best performance, which could achieve complete transformation of a series of PSS into succinimide derivatives and corresponding diols under mild and metal-free conditions. Mechanism investigation indicates that the cation-anion confined hydrogen-bonding interactions among IL, H2O, ester group, and amino/amide groups, strengthens nucleophilicity of the N atoms in amino/amide groups, and improves electrophilicity of carbonyl C atom in ester group. The attack of the amino/amide N atom on carbonyl C of ester group results in cleavage of carbonyl C-O bond in polyester and formation of amide group. This strategy is also effective for aminolysis of poly(trimethylene glutarate) to glutarimides, and poly(1,4-butylene adipate) to caprolactone diimides.

A general strategy for recycling polyester wastes into carboxylic acids and hydrocarbons

Chemical recycling of plastic wastes is of great significance for sustainable development, which also represents a largely untapped opportunity for the synthesis of value-added chemicals. Herein, we report a novel and general strategy to degrade polyesters via directly breaking the Calkoxy-O bond by nucleophilic substitution of halide anion of ionic liquids under mild conditions. Combined with hydrogenation over Pd/C, 1-butyl-2,3-dimethylimidazolium bromide can realize the deconstruction of various polyesters including aromatic and aliphatic ones, copolyesters and polyester mixtures into corresponding carboxylic acids and alkanes; meanwhile, tetrabutylphosphonium bromide can also achieve direct decomposition of the polyesters with β-H into carboxylic acids and alkenes under hydrogen- and metal-free conditions. It is found that the hydrogen-bonding interaction between ionic liquid and ester group in polyester enhances the nucleophilicity of halide anion and activates the Calkoxy-O bond. The findings demonstrate how polyester wastes can be a viable feedstock for the production of carboxylic acids and hydrocarbons.

From Conventional to Sustainable Catalytic Approaches for Heterocycles Synthesis

Synthesis of heterocyclic compounds is fundamental for all the research area in chemistry, from drug synthesis to material science. In this framework, catalysed synthetic methods are of great interest to effective reach such important building blocks. In this review, we will report on some selected examples from the last five years, of the major improvement in the field, focusing on the most important conventional catalytic systems, such as transition metals, organocatalysts, to more sustainable ones such as photocatalysts, iodine-catalysed reaction, electrochemical reactions and green innovative methods.

Ionic-Liquid Hydrogen-Bonding Promoted Alcohols Amination over Cobalt Catalyst via Dihydrogen Autotransfer Mechanism

Higher amines are important high-valuable chemicals with wide applications, and amination of alcohols is a green route to them, which however generally suffers from harsh reaction conditions and use of equivalent base. Herein, we report an ionic-liquid (IL) hydrogen-bonding promoted dihydrogen autotransfer strategy for amination of alcohols to higher amines over cobalt catalyst under base-free conditions. Co(BF4 )2  ⋅ 6 H2 O complexed with triphos and IL (e. g., tetrabutylphosphonium tetrafluoroborate, [P4444 ][BF4 ]) shows high performances for the reaction and is tolerant of a wide scope of amines and alcohols, affording higher amines in good to excellent yields. Mechanism investigation indicates that the [BF4 ]- anion activates the alcohol via hydrogen bonding, promoting transfer of both hydroxyl H and α-H atoms of alcohol to the cobalt catalyst to form an aldehyde intermediate and cobalt dihydride complex, which are involved in the subsequent reductive amination. This strategy provides a green and effective route for alcohol amination, which may have promising applications in alcohol-involved alkylation reactions.

Ring-closing C-O/C-O metathesis of ethers with primary aliphatic alcohols

In canonical organic chemistry textbooks, the widely adopted mechanism for the classic transetherifications between ethers and alcohols starts with the activation of the ether in order to weaken the C-O bond, followed by the nucleophilic attack by the alcohol hydroxy group, resulting in a net C-O/O-H σ-bond metathesis. In this manuscript, our experimental and computational investigation of a Re₂O₇ mediated ring-closing transetherification challenges the fundamental tenets of the traditional transetherification mechanism. Instead of ether activation, the alternative activation of the hydroxy group followed by nucleophilic attack of ether is realized by commercially available Re₂O₇ through the formation of perrhenate ester intermediate in hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP), which results in an unusual C-O/C-O σ-bond metathesis. Due to the preference for the activation of alcohol rather than ether, this intramolecular transetherification reaction is therefore suitable for substrates bearing multiple ether moieties, unparalleled by any previous methods.

Boosting Electroreduction of CO2 over Cationic Covalent Organic Frameworks: Hydrogen Bonding Effects of Halogen Ions

We present the first example of charged imidazolium functionalized porphyrin-based covalent organic framework (Co-iBFBim-COF-X) for electrocatalytic CO₂ reduction reaction, where the free anions (e.g., F^- , Cl^- , Br^- , and I^- ) of imidazolium ions nearby the active Co sites can stabilize the key intermediate *COOH and inhibit hydrogen evolution reaction. Thus, Co-iBFBim-COF-X exhibits higher activity than the neutral Co-BFBim-COF, following the trend of F^- <Cl^- <Br^- <I^- . Particularly, the Co-iBFBim-COF-I^- showed nearly 100 % CO₂ selectivity at a low full-cell voltage of 2.3 V, and achieved a high CO₂ partial current density of 52 mA cm^-2 with a turnover frequency of 3018 h^-1 at 2.4 V in the anion membrane electrode assembly, which is 3.57 times larger than that of neutral Co-BFBim-COF. This work provides new insight into the importance of free anions in the stabilization of intermediates and decreasing the local binding energy of H₂ O with active moiety to enhance CO₂ reduction reaction.

Lactate anion catalyzes aminolysis of polyesters with anilines

Chemical transformation of spent polyesters into value-added chemicals is substantial for sustainable development but still challenging. Here, we report a simple, metal-free, and efficient aminolysis strategy to upcycle polylactic acid by anilines over lactate-based ionic liquids (e.g., tetrabutylammonium lactate), accessing a series of N-aryl lactamides under mild conditions. This strategy is also effective for degradation of poly(bisphenol A carbonate), affording bisphenol A and corresponding diphenylurea derivatives. It is found that, with the assistance of water, lactate anion as hydrogen-bond donor can efficiently activate carbonyl C atom of polyesters via hydrogen bonding with carbonyl O atom; meanwhile, as hydrogen-bond acceptor, it can enhance nucleophilicity of the N atom of anilines via hydrogen bonding with amino H atom. The nucleophilic attack of N atom of anilines on carbonyl C atom of polyesters results in cleavage of C─O bond of polymers and formation of the target products.

A Green Route to Benzyl Phenyl Sulfide from Thioanisole and Benzyl Alcohol over Dual Functional Ionic Liquids

Benzyl phenyl sulfide is a kind of important chemicals with wide usage, which is mainly prepared through a nucleophilic reaction of thiophenol with benzyl chlorides or benzyl alcohols, suffering from inherent drawbacks, such as low efficiency, requirements for equivalent acid or base catalysts and formation of harmful byproducts and waste. Herein, we report a green route to access various benzyl phenyl sulfide derivatives in good to excellent yields under mild conditions via the reaction of thioanisoles with benzyl alcohols over ionic liquid 1-propylsulfonate-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate ([SO₃ HPrMIm][OTf]). Mechanism investigation indicates that the synergic effect of cation and anion of [SO₃ HPrMIm][OTf] activates thioanisoles and benzyl alcohols via hydrogen bonding, thus catalyzes the dehydration of benzyl alcohol to dibenzyl ether and the subsequent metathesis reaction between dibenzyl ether and benzyl phenyl sulfide, finally generating benzyl phenyl sulfide derivatives. This is a simple, highly efficient, and green approach to produce benzyl phenyl sulfide derivatives, which has promising application potentials.

Silicon Catalyzed C-O Bond Ring Closing Metathesis of Polyethers

The Lewis superacid bis(perchlorocatecholato)silane catalyzes C-O bond metathesis of alkyl ethers with an efficiency outperforming all earlier reported systems. Chemoselective ring contractions of macrocyclic crown ethers enable substrate-specific transformations, and an unprecedented ring-closing metathesis of polyethylene glycols allows polymer-selective degradation. Quantum chemical computations scrutinize a high Lewis acidity paired with a simultaneous low propensity for polydentate substrate binding as critical for successful catalysis. Based on these mechanistic insights, a second-generation class of silicon Lewis superacid with enhanced efficacy is identified and demonstrated.

Synthesis of low-viscosity hydrophobic magnetic deep eutectic solvent: Selective extraction of DNA

Fast extraction of high-purity nucleic acid from complex biological sample is the key to downstream nucleic acid analysis. In this work, two low-viscosity hydrophobic magnetic deep eutectic solvents (HMDESs) were synthesized for the selective extraction of DNA. The conformation of the HMDES was simulated by density functional theory (DFT) calculation. Characterization of HMDESs' physical (magnetism, density, viscosity, and hydrophobicity) properties and thermal (melting point and decomposition temperature) properties were conducted. Based on the HMDESs, a vortex-assisted liquid-liquid micro-extraction (VALLME) DNA method was developed. Single stranded DNA that was extracted by HMDESs could be quickly collected by an external magnet. Factors that could impact the DNA extraction process, such as HMDESs volume, temperature, extraction time, and pH were systematically investigated via single-factor experimental analysis. Under the optimized condition, the proposed extraction method has been demonstrated with the extraction of DNA from a series of complex sample matrices, including metal mixture, protein mixture and E. coli cell lysate. The DNA extracted by using HMDES-based VALLME method was well suitable for PCR amplifications. After extraction, the retained DNAs could be readily recovered by simply using Britton-Robison (BR) buffer. In addition, the interaction and corresponding binding sites between HMDESs and DNA were investigated by FT-IR and DFT calculation. This work provides a new green magnetic solvent and a rapid and environmental-friendly extraction method for the enrichment of DNA and other biological macromolecules.

Hydrogen bonding-catalysed alcoholysis of propylene oxide at room temperature

Alcoholysis of propylene oxide (PO) is achieved over azolate ionic liquids (IL, e.g., 1-hydroxyethyl-3-methyl imidazolium imidazolate) at room temperature, accessing glycol ethers in high yields with excellent selectivity (e.g., >99%). Mechanism investigation indicates that cooperation of hydrogen-bonding of the anion with methanol and that of the cation with PO catalyses the reaction.

Hydrogen-Binding-Initiated Activation of O-H Bonds on a Nitrogen-Doped Surface for the Catalytic Oxidation of Biomass Hydroxyl Compounds

Hydrogen binding of molecules on solid surfaces is an attractive interaction that can be used as the driving force for bond activation, material-directed assembly, protein protection, etc. However, the lack of a quantitative characterization method for hydrogen bonds (HBs) on surfaces seriously limits its application. We measured the standard Gibbs free energy change (ΔG⁰ ) of on-surface HBs using NMR. The HB-accepting ability of the surface was investigated by comparing ΔG⁰ values employing the model biomass platform 5-hydroxymethylfurfural on a series of Co-N-C-n catalysts with adjustable electron-rich nitrogen-doped contents. Decreasing ΔG⁰ improves the HB-accepting ability of the nitrogen-doped surface and promotes the selectively initiated activation of O-H bonds in the oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural. As a result, the reaction kinetics is accelerated. In addition to the excellent catalytic performance, the turnover frequency (TOF) for this oxidation is much higher than for reported non-noble-metal catalysts.

Ionic-Liquid-Catalyzed Approaches under Metal-Free Conditions

ConspectusMetal-free catalysis is a promising protocol to access chemicals without metal contamination. Ionic liquids (ILs) that are entirely composed of organic cations and inorganic/organic anions have emerged as promising alternatives to molecular solvents and metal catalysts due to their unique properties such as structural tunability, the coexistence of multiple interactions among ions (e.g., electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonding, van de Waals forces, acid/base interactions, hydrophilic/hydrophobic interactions, etc.), unique affinity for a wide range of chemicals, good chemical and thermal stability, and quite low volatility. ILs have shown potential applications in various chemical processes.In this Account, we systematically described our most recent work on IL-catalyzed approaches under metal-free conditions. The first section presents the IL-catalyzed strategies toward the transformation of CO2 to value-added chemicals, focusing on the CO2-reactive IL-catalyzed CO2 transformation to various heterocycles and the IL-catalyzed reductive transformation of CO2 to chemicals. In these approaches, we designed task-specific ILs that are able to chemically capture and activate CO2 via forming anion-based carbonate/carbamate or cation-based carboxylate/carbamate intermediates, thus further accomplishing its transformation to a series of heterocycles including quinazoline-2,4(1H,3H)-diones, cyclic carbonates, 2-oxazolidinones, oxazolones, and benzimidazolones under metal-free conditions. For the IL-catalyzed approaches to reducing CO2 with hydrosilanes to chemicals, we employed ILs capable of activating the Si-H bond in hydrosilanes and the N-H bond in amine substrates via H-bonding, thus achieving the reductive transformation of CO2 to formamides, benzimidazoles, and benzothiazoles via cooperative catalysis. The second section describes our finding on the IL-catalyzed hydration of the C≡C bond in propargylic alcohols. Azolate anion-based ILs that can chemically capture CO2 via the formation of carbamates could serve as robust nucleophiles to attack the C≡C bond in propargylic alcohols and then efficiently catalyze the hydration of propargylic alcohols to produce α-hydroxy ketones with the assistance of atmospheric CO2 gas under metal-free conditions. The third section unveils the cooperative catalysis strategy of hydrogen bond donors and acceptors of ILs for chemical reactions. In the hydrogen-bonding catalysis protocols, cations of the ILs act as H-bond donors and anions, as acceptors, forming H-bonds with the reactant molecules, respectively, in opposite ways, which can cooperatively catalyze the ring-closing C-O/C-O bond metathesis reactions of aliphatic diethers to O-heterocycles, the dehydrative etherification of alcohols to ethers, and direct oxidative esterification of alcohols to esters. We believe that these IL-catalyzed metal-free processes and strategies display promising practical applications, and their commercialization would bring great benefits to the production of the as-afforded value-added chemicals.

Accelerating Selective Oxidation of Biomass-Based Hydroxyl Compounds with Hydrogen Bond Acceptors

Hydrogen-bonding-initiated self-association makes the valorization of biomass-based hydroxyl compounds a formidable challenge at high concentration. Apart from enhancing the dehydration reaction of hydroxyl compounds with the noncovalent medium effects, insights into how these effects can be exploited to optimize the oxidative reactivity of concentrated hydroxyl compounds remain unclear. Herein, we elucidate that deaggregation of hydroxyl groups with a catalytic number of hydrogen bond acceptors is essential in improving the reactivity of the aerobic oxidation of biomass-based neat aromatic alcohols over the vanadium-based catalyst. The neat 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) deaggregated with 25 mol % N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) shows a >7-fold increase in reactivity to produce corresponding aldehydes with excellent selectivity, in stark contrast to the contrary deactivation of reaction in excessive DMF.

Hydrogen-bond donor and acceptor cooperative catalysis strategy for cyclic dehydration of diols to access O-heterocycles

Dehydrative cyclization of diols to O-heterocycles is attractive, but acid and/or metal-based catalysts are generally required. Here, we present a hydrogen-bond donor and acceptor cooperative catalysis strategy for the synthesis of O-heterocycles from diols in ionic liquids [ILs; e.g., 1-hydroxyethyl-3-methyl imidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate ([HO-EtMIm][OTf])] under metal-free, acid-free, and mild conditions. [HO-EtMIm][OTf] is tolerant to a wide diol scope, shows performance even better than H₂SO₄, and affords a series of O-heterocycles including tetrahydrofurans, tetrahydropyrans, morpholines, dioxanes, and thioxane in high yields. Mechanism investigation indicates that the IL cation and anion serve as hydrogen-bond donor and acceptor, respectively, to activate the C─O and O─H bonds of alcohol via hydrogen bonds, which synergistically catalyze dehydrative cyclization of diols to O-heterocycles. Notably, the products could be spontaneously separated after reaction because of their immiscibility with the IL, and the IL could be recycled. This green strategy has great potential for application in industry.

CO2 switchable deep eutectic solvents for reversible emulsion phase separation
