Abstract
A cost-effective, practical, straightforward and scalable synthesis of α-pyrones via base- and sulfur-promoted annulation of phenylacetates and chalcones is reported. Generated in situ from the starting components by using dbu as a base catalyst, the Michael adducts underwent a smooth oxidative cyclization into 3,4,6-triaryl-2-pyranones upon heating with DABCO and sulfur in DMSO. Extension to malonate in place of phenylacetates led to 4,6-diaryl-2-pyranone-2-carboxylates.

Abstract
Here, we describe a cooperative Pd(0)/chiral phosphoric acid catalytic system that allows us to realize the first chemo-, regio-, and enantioselective sequential cross-[4 + 2]-cycloaddition/decarboxylation reaction between 2-pyrones and unactivated acyclic 1,3-dienes. The key to the success of this transformation is the utilization of an achiral N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) as the ligand and a newly developed chiral phosphoric acid as the cocatalyst. Experimental investigations and computational studies support the idea that the Pd(0)/NHC complex acts as a π-Lewis base to increase the nucleophilicity of 1,3-dienes via η2 coordination, while the chiral phosphoric acid simultaneously increases the electrophilicity of 2-pyrones by hydrogen bonding. By this synergistic catalysis, the sequential cross-[4 + 2]-cycloaddition and decarboxylation reaction proceeds efficiently, enabling the preparation of a wide range of chiral vinyl-substituted 1,3-cyclohexadienes in good yields and enantioselectivities. The synthetic utility of this reaction is demonstrated by synthetic transformations of the product to various valuable chiral six-membered carbocycles.

Abstract
We report herein the collective asymmetric total synthesis of seven pentacyclic 19-nor-clerodane diterpenoids, namely (+)-teucvin (+)-cracroson A, (+)-cracroson E, (+)-montanin A, (+)-teucvisin C, (+)-teucrin A, and (+)-2-hydroxyteuscorolide. An ytterbium-catalyzed asymmetric inverse-electron-demand Diels-Alder reaction of 4-methyl-2-pyrone with a chiral C5-substituted cyclohexa-1,3-dienol silyl ether is the key feature of the synthesis, which provides the common cis-decalin intermediate with five continuous stereocenters in excellent yield and stereoselectivity. From this diversifiable intermediate, the total synthesis of (+)-teucvin and (+)-2-hydroxyteuscorolide was realized in thirteen and eighteen steps, respectively. From (+)-teucvin, five other pentacyclic 19-nor-clerodanes were divergently and concisely generated through late-stage oxidation state adjustments.

Abstract
Despite the blossoming of reports of diastereodivergent synthesis over the past years, switchable control of the stereochemistry of the bridgehead atoms of the fused frameworks has been significantly underdeveloped. Here we disclose the ability of Pd0-π-Lewis base catalysis to finely reverse the concerted inverse-electron-demand aza-Diels-Alder cycloaddition reaction between cyclic 1,3-dienes and aurone-derived 1-azadienes. In contrast, the in situ-formed HOMO-energy-increased Pd0-η2-complexes of cyclic 1,3-dienes underwent a cascade vinylogous Michael addition/allylic amination process with 1-azadienes. Moreover, judicious selection of chiral ligands allowed for switchable diastereodivergent [4 + 2] annulations to be accomplished, resulting in the construction of both cis- and trans-fused tetrahydropyridine architectures in high yields with moderate to excellent stereoselectivity levels. A variety of acyclic 1,3-dienes and 1-heterodienes were also applied, and furnished a structural diversity of enantioenriched frameworks.

Abstract
A broadly applicable diastereo- and enantioselective inverse-electron-demand Diels-Alder reaction of 2-pyrones and acyclic enol ethers is reported herein. Using a copper(II)-BOX catalytic system, bridged bicyclic lactones are obtained in very high yields (up to 99 % yield) and enantioselectivities (up to 99 % ee) from diversely substituted 2-pyrones and acyclic enol ethers. Mechanistic experiments as well as DFT calculations indicate the occurrence of a stepwise mechanism. The synthetic potential of the bridged bicyclic lactones is showcased by the enantioselective synthesis of polyfunctional cyclohexenes and cyclohexadienes, as well as a carbasugar unit.

Abstract
The first enantioselective total synthesis of (+)-lucidumone is described through a 13-step synthetic pathway (longest linear sequence). The key steps involve the formation of a bridged bicyclic lactone by an enantioselective inverse-electron-demand Diels-Alder cycloaddition, C-O bond formation to assemble two fragments, and a one-pot retro-[4 + 2]/[4 + 2] cycloaddition cascade. The synthesis is scalable, and more than one gram of natural product was synthesized in one batch.

Abstract
We have developed and investigated a catalytic desymmetrization reaction strategy that affords functionalized decalin derivatives with high enantioselectivities from C2-symmetric derivatives through aldol-aldol annulation. We identified the structural moieties of the catalyst necessary for the formation of the decalin derivative with high enantioselectivity. We elucidated the mechanisms of the catalyzed reactions: the first aldol reaction step was reversible, and the second aldol step was rate-limiting and stereochemistry-determining and was enantioselective. Using theoretical calculations guided by the experimental results, we identified the interactions between the catalyst and the transition state that led to the major enantiomer. The information obtained in this study will be useful for the development of catalysts and chemical transformations.

Abstract
cis-Hydroindole scaffolds widely exist in a large number of natural products, pharmaceuticals, and organocatalysts. Therefore, the development of efficient and enantioselective methods for the construction of cis-hydroindoles is of great interest and importance. Herein, a novel approach for the enantioselective synthesis of cis-hydroindole scaffolds has been realized through a chiral N,N′-dioxide/Mg(OTf)2 complex catalyzed asymmetric inverse-electron-demand Diels–Alder (IEDDA) reaction of 2-pyrones and cyclic enamines. A series of substituted cis-hydroindole derivatives bearing multiple contiguous stereocenters and functional groups were obtained in good to excellent yields and enantioselectivities (up to 99% yield, and 95% ee) under mild reaction conditions. Moreover, the enantioselective formal total synthesis of (+)-minovincine was concisely furnished with high efficiency and stereoselectivity to demonstrate the synthetic potential of this method. An enantioselective IEDDA reaction between 2-pyrone and cyclic enamine was realized to construct cis-hydroindoles in high yield and ee, providing a concise route for formal total synthesis of (+)-minovincine.![]()

Abstract
Using 1-thioaurones and 1-azaaurones as electron-deficient oxa-dienes, an organocatalytic asymmetric aromatizing inverse electron-demand [4+2] cycloaddition with γ-deconjugated butenolides and azlactones was developed. A wide range of optically active benzothiophene-fused δ-lactones and indole-fused δ-lactones were obtained with desirable outcomes (up to 94% yield, >99 : 1 dr and 99% ee).

Abstract
An inverse-electron-demand Diels-Alder (IEDDA) reaction could complement the conventional normal-electron-demand Diels-Alder reaction in the synthesis of six-membered carbocycles. However, catalytic asymmetric all-carbon-based IEDDA reactions are underdeveloped. Herein, we disclosed a copper-catalyzed asymmetric IEDDA reaction using electron-deficient 3-carboalkoxyl-2-pyrones and electronically unbiased indenes as reactants. This method enables the rapid and enantioselective construction of a wide range of hexahydrofluorenyl bridged-lactone scaffolds. Using this method, asymmetric total syntheses of cephanolides A and B were accomplished.

Abstract
The enantioselective synthesis of axially chiral biaryls by a copper-catalyzed Diels-Alder/retro-Diels-Alder reaction of 2-pyrones with alkynes is reported herein. Using electron-deficient 2-pyrones and electron-rich 1-naphthyl acetylenes as the reaction partners, a broad range of axially chiral biaryl esters are obtained in excellent yields (up to 97% yield) and enantioselectivities (up to >99% ee). DFT calculations reveal the reaction mechanism and provide insights into the origins of the stereoselectivities. The practicality and robustness of this reaction are showcased by gram-scale synthesis. The synthetic utilizations are demonstrated by the amenable transformations of the products.

Abstract
An efficient intramolecular annulation of Morita-Baylis-Hillman (MBH) alcohols of propiolaldehydes is developed in the presence of ICl or PhSeSePh/PhSSPh-CuCl2. This cyclization offers access to a wide variety of iodinated or chalcogenated 3-(chloromethyl)-2-pyrones in good yields. The chloromethyl group of the obtained 2-pyrones has been easily converted to introduce other handy functionalities, which allowed for further transformations to synthesize diverse 2-pyrone containing molecules.

Abstract
AbstractDiels–Alder reactions of 2-pyrones with alkenes can provide highly functionalized [2,2,2]-bicyclic lactones under mild reaction conditions. Synthetic utilizations of these reactions have been well demonstrated in natural-product synthesis. Although several catalytic asymmetric strategies have been realized, current research in this area is still largely underdeveloped.
