Highly Efficient and Air‐Stable Lanthanide Eu II Complex: New Emitter in Organic Light Emitting Diodes

Determining the Effects of Zero-Field Splitting and Magnetic Exchange in Dimeric Europium(II) Complexes

Related BAP [BAP = bis(acyl)phosphide] and Acac (Acac = β-diketonate) molecules perform as robust supports for both lanthanide and actinide metals. Here, a molecular bimetallic Eu2+ complex was successfully targeted and isolated by employing sodium bis(mesitoyl)phosphide [Na(mesBAP)] in a salt metathesis with EuI2, producing [Eu(mesBAP)2(et2o)]2 (et2o = metal-coordinated diethyl ether). The corresponding Acac-Eu2+ complex was targeted using mesAcac- (1,3-dimesityl-1,3-propanedione), generating [Eu(mesAcac)2(et2o)]2. Both complexes were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, UV-vis, IR, and NMR spectroscopies, and variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility. [Eu(mesBAP)2(et2o)]2 was persistent under anaerobic, anhydrous conditions, whereas the analogous [Eu(mesAcac)2(et2o)]2 showed evidence of decomposition under identical conditions. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility and magnetization studies of [Eu(mesBAP)2(et2o)]2 and [Eu(mesAcac)2(et2o)]2 were performed, resulting in similar magnetic exchange coupling values of Jex = -0.018 and -0.023 cm-1 and axial zero-field-splitting D values of -0.38 and -0.51 cm-1, respectively.

Bis-Alkoxide Dysprosium(III) Crown Ether Complexes Exhibit Tunable Air Stability and Record Energy Barrier

High-performance and air-stable single-molecule magnets (SMMs) can offer great convenience for the fabrication of information storage devices. However, the controversial requisition of high stability and magnetic axiality is hard to balance for lanthanide-based SMMs. Here, a family of dysprosium(III) crown ether complexes possessing hexagonal-bipyramidal (pseudo-D6h symmetry) local coordination geometry with tunable air stability and effective energy barrier for magnetization reversal (Ueff) are shown. The three complexes share the common formula of [Dy(18-C-6)L2][I3] (18-C-6 = 1,4,7,10,13,16-hexaoxacyclooctadecane; L = I, 1; L = OtBu 2 and L = 1-AdO 3). 1 is highly unstable in the air. 2 can survive in the air for a few minutes, while 3 remains unchanged in the air for more than 1 week. This is roughly in accordance with the percentage of buried volumes of the axial ligands. More strikingly, 2 and 3 show progressive enhancement of Ueff and 3 exhibits a record high Ueff of 2427(19) K, which significantly contributes to the 100 s blocking temperature up to 11 K for Yttrium-diluted sample, setting a new benchmark for solid-state air-stable SMMs.

Modulating the Photoluminescence of Europium through Crystalline Assembly Formation with Gold Nanoclusters and Then Phosphate Ions

We report delayed fluorescence enhancement of europium (Eu3+) ions through complexation with ligand-stabilized gold nanoclusters (Au NCs). The different Eu3+-centric emissions following complexation with Au NCs exhibited selective augmentation in the spectral lines attributed to the 5D0 → 7FJ transitions. The photoluminescence (PL) properties, including delayed Eu emission, from each component could be modulated through further functionalization of phosphate ions (Pi), leading to crystallization. The assembled crystalline structure of europium-containing Au NCs (Eu Au NCs) was corroborated by selected area electron diffraction analyses and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy analyses. On the basis of PL measurements and other experimental evidence, the two different lifetimes arising from the components, prompt emission of Au NCs and delayed emission of Eu3+, were affected in the assembled nanostructure. Such a design offers the possibility of developing an optical system by conjugating molecular NCs and atomic luminescent probes that has potential uses.

Tunable Multicolor Lanthanide Supramolecular Assemblies with White Light Emission Confined by Cucurbituril[7]

Macrocyclic confinement-induced supramolecular luminescence materials have important application value in the fields of bio-sensing, cell imaging, and information anti-counterfeiting. Herein, a tunable multicolor lanthanide supramolecular assembly with white light emission is reported, which is constructed by co-assembly of cucurbit[7]uril (CB[7]) encapsulating naphthylimidazolium dicarboxylic acid (G1 )/Ln (Eu3+ /Tb3+ ) complex and carbon quantum dots (CD). Benefiting from the macrocyclic confinement effect of CB[7], the supramolecular assembly not only extends the fluorescence intensity of the lanthanide complex G1 /Tb3+ by 36 times, but also increases the quantum yield by 28 times and the fluorescence lifetime by 12 times. Furthermore, the CB[7]/G1 /Ln assembly can further co-assemble with CD and diarylethene derivatives (DAE) to realize the intelligently-regulated full-color spectrum including white light, which results from the competitive encapsulation of adamantylamine and CB[7], the change of pH, and photochromic DAE. The multi-level logic gate based on lanthanide supramolecular assembly is successfully applied in anti-counterfeiting system and information storage, providing an effective method for the research of new luminescent intelligent materials.

Europium(III) as luminescence probe for interactions of a sulfate-reducing microorganism with potentially toxic metals

Microorganisms show a high affinity for trivalent actinides and lanthanides, which play an important role in the safe disposal of high-level radioactive waste as well as in the mining of various rare earth elements. The interaction of the lanthanide Eu(III) with the sulfate-reducing microorganism Desulfosporosinus hippei DSM 8344T, a representative of the genus Desulfosporosinus that naturally occurs in clay rock and bentonite, was investigated. Eu(III) is often used as a non-radioactive analogue for the trivalent actinides Pu(III), Am(III), and Cm(III), which contribute to a major part of the radiotoxicity of the nuclear waste. D. hippei DSM 8344T showed a weak interaction with Eu(III), most likely due to a complexation with lactate in artificial Opalinus Clay pore water. Hence, a low removal of the lanthanide from the supernatant was observed. Scanning transmission electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy revealed a bioprecipitation of Eu(III) with phosphates potentially excreted from the cells. This demonstrates that the ongoing interaction mechanisms are more complex than a simple biosorption process. The bioprecipitation was also verified by luminescence spectroscopy, which showed that the formation of the Eu(III) phosphate compounds starts almost immediately after the addition of the cells. Moreover, chemical microscopy provided information on the local distribution of the different Eu(III) species in the formed cell aggregates. These results provide first insights into the interaction mechanisms of Eu(III) with sulfate-reducing bacteria and contribute to a comprehensive safety concept for a high-level radioactive waste repository, as well as to a better understanding of the fate of heavy metals (especially rare earth elements) in the environment.

Lanthanide complexes with d-f transition: new emitters for single-emitting-layer white organic light-emitting diodes

White organic light-emitting diodes (WOLEDs) is a new generation of lighting technology and has stimulated wide-ranging studies. Despite the advantage of simple device structure, single-emitting-layer WOLEDs (SEL-WOLEDs) still face the challenges of difficult material screening and fine energy level regulation. Herein, we report efficient SEL-WOLEDs with a sky-blue emitting cerium(III) complex Ce-TBO^2Et and an orange-red emitting europium(II) complex Eu(Tp^2Et)₂ as the emitters, showing a maximum external quantum efficiency of 15.9% and Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage coordinates of (0.33, 0.39) at various luminances. Most importantly, the electroluminescence mechanism of direct hole capture and hindered energy transfer between the two emitters facilitate a manageable weight doping concentration of 5% for Eu(Tp^2Et)₂, avoiding the low concentration (<1%) of the low-energy emitter in typical SEL-WOLEDs. Our results indicate that d-f transition emitters may circumvent fine energy level regulation and provide development potential for SEL-WOLEDs.

A pillar[5]arene noncovalent assembly boosts a full-color lanthanide supramolecular light switch

A photo-responsive full-color lanthanide supramolecular switch was constructed from a synthetic 2,6-pyridine dicarboxylic acid (DPA)-modified pillar[5]arene (H) complexing with lanthanide ion (Ln3+ = Tb3+ and Eu3+) and dicationic diarylethene derivative (G1) through a noncovalent supramolecular assembly. Benefiting from the strong complexation between DPA and Ln3+ with a 3 : 1 stoichiometric ratio, the supramolecular complex H/Ln3+ presented an emerging lanthanide emission in the aqueous and organic phase. Subsequently, a network supramolecular polymer was formed by H/Ln3+ further encapsulating dicationic G1via the hydrophobic cavity of pillar[5]arene, which greatly contributed to the increased emission intensity and lifetime, and also resulted in the formation of a lanthanide supramolecular light switch. Moreover, full-color luminescence, especially white light emission, was achieved in aqueous (CIE: 0.31, 0.32) and dichloromethane (CIE: 0.31, 0.33) solutions by the adjustment of different ratios of Tb3+ and Eu3+. Notably, the photo-reversible luminescence properties of the assembly were tuned via alternant UV/vis light irradiation due to the conformation-dependent photochromic energy transfer between the lanthanide and the open/closed-ring of diarylethene. Ultimately, the prepared lanthanide supramolecular switch was successfully applied to anti-counterfeiting through the use of intelligent multicolored writing inks, and presents new opportunities for the design of advanced stimuli-responsive on-demand color tuning with lanthanide luminescent materials.

Reduction chemistry yields stable and soluble divalent lanthanide tris(pyrazolyl)borate complexes

Reduction of the heteroleptic Ln(III) precursors [Ln(Tp)₂(OTf)] (Tp = hydrotris(1-pyrazolyl)borate; OTf = triflate) with either an aluminyl(I) anion or KC₈ yielded the adduct-free homoleptic Ln(II) complexes dimeric 1-Eu [{Eu(Tp)(μ-κ¹:η⁵-Tp)}₂] and monomeric 1-Yb [Yb(Tp)₂]. Complexes 1-Ln have good solubility and stability in both non-coordinating and coordinating solvents. Reaction of 1-Ln with 2 Ph₃PO yielded 1-Ln(OPPh3)2. All complexes are intensely coloured and 1-Eu is photoluminescent. The electronic absorption data show the 4f-5d electronic transitions in Ln(II). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction data reveal first μ-κ¹:η⁵-coordination mode of the unsubstituted Tp ligand to lanthanides in 1-Eu.

Rare Earth Complexes of Europium(II) and Substituted Bis(pyrazolyl)borates with High Photoluminescence Efficiency

Rare earth europium(II) complexes based on d-f transition luminescence have characteristics of broad emission spectra, tunable emission colors and short excited state lifetimes, showing great potential in display, lighting and other fields. In this work, four complexes of Eu(II) and bis(pyrazolyl)borate ligands, where pyrazolyl stands for pyrazolyl, 3-methylpyrazolyl, 3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl or 3-trifluoromethylpyrazole, were designed and synthesized. Due to the varied steric hindrance of the ligands, different numbers of solvent molecules (tetrahydrofuran) are participated to saturate the coordination structure. These complexes showed blue-green to yellow emissions with maximum wavelength in the range of 490-560 nm, and short excited state lifetimes of 30-540 ns. Among them, the highest photoluminescence quantum yield can reach 100%. In addition, when the complexes were heated under vacuum or nitrogen atmosphere, they finally transformed into the complexes of Eu(II) and corresponding tri(pyrazolyl)borate ligands and sublimated away.

Synthesis, Structure and Photoluminescence Properties of Cd and Cd-Ln Pentafluorobenzoates with 2,2′:6′,2′-Terpyridine Derivatives

Six new complexes [Cd(tpy)(pfb)2] (1, tpy = 2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine), [Ln2Cd2(tpy)2(pfb)10] (Ln = Eu (2Eu), Tb (2Tb)), [Ln2Cd2(tbtpy)2(pfb)10]·2MeCN (Ln = Eu (3Eu), Tb (3Tb), tbtpy = 4,4′,4″-tri-tert-butyl-2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine), [Eu2Cd2(tppz)(pfb)10]n (4, tppz = 2,3,5,6-tetra-(pyridin-2-yl)pyrazine) based on pentafluorobenzoic acid (Hpfb) have been prepared and investigated. The effect of tridentate ligands on geometry heterometallic scaffolds synthesized complexes is discussed. The supramolecular crystal structures of the new compounds are stabilized by π-π, C-F···π, C-H···O, C-H...F, F….F interactions. Non-covalent interactions have been studied using Hirschfeld surface analysis. The obtained compounds were characterized by single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, luminescence spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, CHN analysis. Complexes 2Ln and 3Ln exhibit metal-centered photoluminescence, but the presence of ligand luminescence bands indicates incomplete energy transfer from the d-block to the lanthanide ion.

Highly Stable Europium(III) Tetrahedral (Eu4L4)(phen)4 Cage: Structure, Luminescence Properties, and Cellular Imaging

Luminescent lanthanide cages have many potential applications in guest recognition, sensing, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and bioimaging. However, these polynuclear lanthanide assemblies' poor stability, dispersity, and luminescence properties have significantly constrained their practical applications. Furthermore, it is still a huge challenge to simultaneously synthesize and design lanthanide organic polyhedra with high stability and quantum yield. Herein, we demonstrate a simple and robust strategy to improve the rigidity, chemical stability, and luminescence of an Eu(III) tetrahedral cage by introducing the conjugated planar auxiliary phen ligand. The self-assembled tetrahedral cage, (Eu₄L₄)(phen)₄ [L = (4,4',4″-tris(4,4,4-trifluoro-1,3-dioxobutyl)-triphenylamine), phen = 1,10-phenanthroline], exhibited characteristic luminescence of Eu³⁺ ions with high quantum yield (41%) and long lifetime (131 μs) in toluene (1.0 × 10^-6 M). Moreover, the Eu(III) cage was stable in water and even in an aqueous solution with a pH range of 1-14. 3-(4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay and cellular imaging revealed that the Pluronic F127-coated hybrid material, (Eu₄L₄)(phen)₄@F127, exhibited low cytotoxicity, good biocompatibility, and cellular imaging ability, which may inspire more insights into the development of lanthanide organic polyhedra (LOPs) for potential biomedical applications.

Complexes of Ce(III) and Bis(pyrazolyl)borate Ligands: Synthesis, Structures, and Luminescence Properties

Luminescent cerium(III) complexes based on the d-f transition have characteristics of broad emission spectra, tunable emission colors, and short excited state lifetimes, showing potential applications in display, lighting, and other fields. Thus it is important to construct luminescent Ce(III) complexes with high photoluminescence efficiency and good stability. In this work, five Ce(III) complexes with dihydrobis(pyrazolyl)borate or diphenylbis(pyrazolyl)borate ligands, where pyrazolyl stands for pyrazolyl, 3-methylpyrazolyl, or 3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl, were designed and synthesized, showing emission colors from deep blue to yellow with a maximum wavelength in the range of 390-560 nm, short excited state lifetimes of 30-80 ns, and photoluminescence quantum yields exceeding 75% in solid powder. By comparing these complexes, it is found that higher photoluminescence efficiency and better thermal/air stability could be achieved in the complexes with dihydrobis(pyrazolyl)borate ligands.

Frontiers in chiral phosphorescent complexes for circularly polarized electroluminescence

Materials with circularly polarized luminescence properties have attracted wide attention in recent years. One of the most important applications of these materials is for circularly polarized organic light emitting diodes (CP-OLEDs), which have potential application in 3D displays. Chiral conjugated polymers, small organic molecules and metal complexes have already been employed as emitters for CP-OLEDs. Benefiting from the ability to harvest both singlet and triplet excitons, chiral phosphorescent metal complexes always show outstanding device performance. In this article we briefly discuss the recent progress, current challenges and out look of chiral phosphorescent metal complexes.

Rare Earth Complexes with 5d-4f Transition: New Emitters in Organic Light-Emitting Diodes

Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) are considered as next-generation displays and lighting technologies. During the past three decades, various luminescent materials such as fluorescence, phosphorescence, and thermally activated delayed fluorescence materials have been subsequently investigated as emitters. To date, blue OLEDs are still the bottleneck as compared to red and green ones because of the lack of efficient emitters with simultaneous high exciton utilization efficiency and long-term stability. Recently, d-f transition rare earth complexes have been reported as new emitters in OLEDs with potential high efficiency and stability. In this Perspective, we present a brief introduction to OLEDs and an overview of the previous electroluminescence study on d-f transition rare earth complexes. This is followed by our recent developments in cerium(III) complex- and europium(II) complex-based OLEDs. We finally discuss the challenges and opportunities for OLED study based on d-f transition rare earth complexes.

Toward Opto-Structural Correlation to Investigate Luminescence Thermometry in an Organometallic Eu(II) Complex

Lanthanide-based luminescent materials have unique properties and are well-studied for many potential applications. In particular, the characteristic 5d → 4f emission of divalent lanthanide ions such as Eu^II allows for tunability of the emissive properties via modulation of the coordination environment. We report the synthesis and photoluminescence investigation of pentamethylcyclopentadienyleuropium(II) tetrahydroborate bis(tetrahydrofuran) dimer (1), the first example of an organometallic, discrete molecular Eu^II band-shift luminescence thermometer. Complex 1 exhibits an absolute sensitivity of 8.2 cm^-1 K^-1 at 320 K, the highest thus far observed for a lanthanide-based band-shift thermometer. Opto-structural correlation via variable-temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction and fluorescence spectroscopy allows rationalization of the remarkable thermometric luminescence of complex 1 and reveals the significant potential of molecular Eu^II compounds in luminescence thermometry.

Highly Efficient Heteroleptic Cerium(III) Complexes with a Substituted Pyrazole Ancillary Ligand and Their Application in Blue Organic Light-Emitting Diodes

Compared with red and green organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), blue is the bottleneck that restricts the wide development of OLEDs from being the next-generation technology for displays and lighting. As a new type of emitter, a Ce(III) complex shows many satisfactory advantages, such as a short excited-state lifetime, 100% theoretical exciton utilization efficiency, and tunable emission color. Herein we synthesized three heteroleptic Ce(III) complexes Ce(Tp^Me2)₂(dtfpz), Ce(Tp^Me2)₂(dmpz), and Ce(Tp^Me2)₂(dppz) with the hydrotris(3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl)borate (Tp^Me2) main ligand and different substituted pyrazole ancillary ligands, namely, 3,5-di(trifluomethyl)pyrazolyl (dtfpz), 3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl (dmpz), and 3,5-diphenylpyrazolyl (dppz), and studied their structures and luminescence properties. All the Ce(III) complexes exhibited a near-unity photoluminescence quantum yield both in solution and as a powder with maximum emission wavelengths in the range of 450-486 nm. The OLED employing Ce(Tp^Me2)₂(dppz) as the emitter showed the best performance, including a turn-on voltage, maximum luminance, and external quantum efficiency of 3.2 V, 29 200 cd m^-2, and 12.5%, respectively.

Lanthanide Cerium(III) Tris(pyrazolyl)borate Complexes: Efficient Blue Emitters for Doublet Organic Light-Emitting Diodes

Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) have had commercial success in displays and lighting. Compared to red and green OLEDs, blue OLEDs are still the bottleneck because the high-energy and long-lived triplet exciton in traditional blue OLEDs causes the short operational lifetime of the device. As a new type emitter, lanthanide complexes with a 5d-4f transition could have short excited-state lifetimes on the order of nanoseconds. To achieve a high-efficiency 5d-4f transition, we systematically tuned the steric and electronic effects of tripodal tris(pyrazolyl)borate ligands and drew a full picture of their Ce(III) complexes. Intriguingly, all of these complexes show bright blue emission with high photoluminescence quantum yields exceeding 95% and short decay lifetimes of 35-73 ns both in the solid powder and in dichloromethane solutions. Using the Ce(III) complex emitter, we show a blue OLED with a maximum external quantum efficiency of 14.1% and a maximum luminance of 33,160 cd m^-2, and the specific electroluminescence mechanism of direct exciton formation on the Ce(III) ion with a near-unity exciton utilization efficiency is also confirmed. The discovered photoluminescence and electroluminescence property-structure relationships may shed new light on the rational design of highly efficient lanthanide-based blue emitters and their optoelectronic devices such as OLEDs.

Efficient Blue Light Emitting Diodes Based On Europium Halide Perovskites

Flat panel displays enjoy 100 billion-dollar markets with significant penetration in daily life, which require efficient, color-saturated blue, green, and red light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The recently emerged halide perovskites have demonstrated low-cost and outstanding performance for potential LED applications. However, the performance of blue perovskite LEDs (PeLEDs) lags far behind red and green cousins, particularly for color coordinates approaching (0.131, 0.046) that fulfill the Rec. 2020 specification for blue emitters. Here, a high-efficiency, lead-free perovskite, CsEuBr₃ , is reported that exhibits bright blue exciton emission centered at 448 nm with a color coordinates of (0.15, 0.04), contributed from Eu-5d→Eu-4f/Br-4p transition with an optical band gap of 2.85 eV. Further optical characterizations reveal its short excited-state lifetime of 151 ns, excellent exciton diffusion diffusivity of 0.0227 cm² s^-1 , and high quantum yield of ≈69%. Inspired by these findings, deep-blue PeLEDs based on all-vacuum processing methods, which have been demonstrated as the most successful approach for the organic LED industry, are constructed. The devices show a maximum external quantum efficiency of 6.5% with an operating half-lifetime of 50 mins at an initial brightness of 15.9 cd m^-2 . It is anticipated that this work will inspire further research on lanthanide-based perovskites for next-generation LED applications.
