Bis(diiminate)-based boron difluoro complexes: effective synthon for bis(borenium) cations

A series of boron difluoro bis(diiminate) complexes have been prepared and used to obtain triflate substituted fluoroborane complexes. The corresponding well-defined bis(borenium) cations were subsequently synthesized and structurally authenticated. We are also presenting the first experimental and theoretical study of bis(borenium) cations that are derivative of cationic borinic acid.

The aluminium salt [(NHC)Al(tol)(C6F5)2][B(C6F5)4], (NHC = C3H2(N(iPr2C6H3))2) is shown to behave as a Lewis superacid as it abstracts fluoride from [SbF6]-. It also acts as a Lewis acid catalyst for hydrosilyation, hydrodefluorination and Friedel-Crafts reactions.

Taming the parent oxoborane

Despite recent advancements in the chemistry of multiply bound boron compounds, the laboratory isolation of the parent oxoborane moiety, HBO has long remained an unsolved and well-recognized challenge. The reaction of 6-SIDipp·BH₃ [6-SIDipp = 1,3-di(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)tetrahydropyrimidine-2-ylidene] with GaCl₃ afforded an unusual boron-gallium 3c-2e compound (1). The addition of water to 1 resulted in the release of H₂ and the formation of a rare acid stabilized neutral parent oxoborane, LB(H)[double bond, length as m-dash]O (2). Crystallographic and density functional theory (DFT) analyses support the presence of a terminal B[double bond, length as m-dash]O double bond. Subsequent addition of another equivalent of water molecule led to hydrolysis of the B-H bond to the B-OH bond, but the 'B[double bond, length as m-dash]O' moiety remained intact, resulting in the formation of the hydroxy oxoborane compound (3), which can be classified as a monomeric form of metaboric acid.

Boraalkenes Made by a Hydroboration Route: Cycloaddition and B=C Bond Cleavage Reactions

Hydroboration of styrene or vinylcyclohexane with the IMes(C₆ F₅ )BH⁺ cation followed by deprotonation provided a convenient synthetic entry to the [B]=CHCH₂ R boraalkenes 9 a and 9 b. The in situ generated IMes(SCN)BH⁺ system reacted similarly with 1,1-diphenylethene followed by deprotonation to give the isothiocyanato substituted boraalkene 9 c. The boraalkenes underwent [2+2] cycloaddition reactions with a small series of heterocumulenes to give the respective four-membered heterocycles. The [B]=CHCH₂ R+CO₂ cycloadducts 13 a and 13 b added the borane HB(C₆ F₅ )₂ with cleavage of the central B-C σ-bond. CS₂ underwent an unusual reaction with the boraalkenes, namely insertion into the B=C bond with formation of the borylated dithioketene acetal under complete rupture of the strong B=C double bond. The intermediate dithiobora-β-lactone type intermediate was isolated in the case of the isothiocyanato-boraalkene reaction and characterized by X-ray diffraction.

Facile Synthesis of Uranium Complexes with a Pendant Borane Lewis Acid and 1,2-Insertion of CO into a U-N Bond

In this contribution, we illustrate uranium complexes bearing a pendant borate (i.e. 1 and 2) or a pendant borane (i.e. 3 and 4) moiety via reaction of the highly strained uranacycle I with various 3-coordinate boranes. Complexes 3 and 4 represent the first examples of uranium complexes with a pendant borane Lewis acid. Moreover, complex 3 was capable of activation of CO, delivering a new CO activation mode, and an abnormal CO 1,2-insertion pathway into a U-N bond. The importance of the pendant borane moiety was confirmed by the controlled experiments.

An Iridium-Stabilized Borenium Intermediate

Exploration of new organometallic systems based on polyhedral boron clusters has the potential to solve challenging chemical problems such as the stabilization of reactive intermediates and transition-state-like species postulated for E-H (E = H, B, C, Si) bond activation reactions. We report on facile and clean B-H activation of a hydroborane by a new iridium boron cluster complex. The product of this reaction is an unprecedented and fully characterized transition metal-stabilized boron cation or borenium. Moreover, this intermediate bears an unusual intramolecular B···H interaction between the hydrogen originating from the activated hydroborane and the cyclometallated metal-bonded boron atom of the boron cluster. This B···H interaction is proposed to be an arrested insertion of hydrogen into the B_cage-metal bond and the initiation step for iridium "cage-walking" around the upper surface of the boron cluster. The "cage-walking" process is supported by the hydrogen-deuterium exchange observed at the boron cluster, and a mechanism is proposed on the basis of theoretical methods with a special focus on the role of noncovalent interactions. All new compounds were isolated and fully characterized by NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. Key compounds were studied by single crystal X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

A deprotonation pathway to reactive [B]CH2 boraalkenes

The BH compounds IMes(Ar^F)BH(NTf₂) (Ar^F: C₆F₅ or FpXyl) were converted to the IMes(Ar^F)BCH₂ boraalkenes in a three step reaction sequence of B-methylation with methyllithium, hydride abstraction and deprotonation. The BCH₂ boraalkenes reacted with elemental sulfur to give a thiaborirane product. They underwent [2+2] cycloaddition reactions with carbon dioxide or sulfur dioxide to give four-membered boron containing heterocycles. The boraalkenes added strongly Lewis acidic boranes at their CH₂ carbon atoms. The corresponding HB(C₆F₅)₂/boraalkene adduct reduced carbon monoxide to a -OCH(C₆F₅)- moiety inside a five-membered heterocycle at the B-CH₂-B template. The boraalkenes reacted with the [(Me₂S)AuCl] reagent to form the corresponding (boraalkene)AuCl complexes.

Generation of Boryl-nitroxide Radicals from a Boraalkene via the Nitroso Ene Reaction

Examples of isolated boron substituted nitroxide radicals are rare. The reaction of the reactive cyclic boraalkene 3 with nitrosobenzene yields a mixture of the [2 + 2] cycloaddition product 4a, the B-nitroxide radicals 5a and 6a and the azoxybenzene co-product 7avia a bora nitroso ene reaction pathway, the boron analogue of the nitroso ene reaction. The products were separated by flash chromatography, and the B-nitroxide radicals were characterized by X-ray diffraction and EPR spectroscopy. Radical 5a was shown to be a hydrogen atom abstractor. Both the B-nitroxide radicals are more easily oxidized compared to e.g. TEMPO, as shown by cyclic voltammetry.

The NHC-stabilized boraalkene reacts with nitrosobenzene to give a [2+2] cycloaddition product plus a pair of persistent borylnitroxide radicals. These are thought to be formed by means of a bora nitroso ene reaction followed by H-atom transfer.

N-Heterocyclic Carbene Stabilized 1-Bora-1,3-butadienes

Deprotonation of [(NHC)(Fmes)B-allyl]⁺ borenium cations (NHC, IMes (a) or IMe₂ (b); Fmes, 2,4,6-(CF₃)₃C₆H₂) provides an easy entry to the NHC-stabilized 1-bora-1,3-butadienes. They feature a planar s-trans-conformation just like 1,3-butadiene. The 1-borabutadiene 7a undergoes hydroboration reactions; the HB(C₆F₅)₂ hydroboration product is trapped with CO or an isonitrile to give the respective cyclic zwitterionic borenium-borate enolate or enamide products. 1-Borabutadiene 7b undergoes 1,4-chalcogenation with elemental sulfur or selenium, and it gives the six-membered heterocyclic 1,4-addition product with the S═O bond of sulfur dioxide. Compound 7b served as a precursor for the formation of a borylated η³-allyl ligand at Ru. 7b formed a Rh complex by reaction with [Rh(ethylene)₂Cl]₂. It subsequently underwent an intramolecular C-H activation reaction to a mixture of η³-methyl-boraallyl Rh complex isomers.

Competition for Hydride between Silicon and Boron: Synthesis and Characterization of a Hydroborane-Stabilized Silylium Ion

Potent main‐group Lewis acids are capable of activating element‐hydrogen bonds. To probe the rivalry for hydride between silylium‐ and borenium‐ion centers, a neutral precursor with the hydrosilane and hydroborane units in close proximity on a naphthalene‐1,8‐diyl platform was designed. Abstraction of one hydride leads to a hydroborane‐stabilized silylium ion rather than a hydrosilane‐coordinated borenium ion paired with [B(C₆F₅)₄]⁻ or [HCB₁₁Cl₁₁]⁻ as counteranions. Characterization by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy and X‐ray diffraction supported by DFT calculations reveals a cationic, unsymmetrical open three‐center, two‐electron (3c2e) Si−H−B linkage.

Carbon Monoxide Coupling Reactions via a Frustrated Lewis Pair-Derived η2-Formyl Borane

The η²-formyl borane system 3 is readily available by carbonylation of the vicinal P/BH frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) 1. It serves as a frustrated C/B Lewis pair toward carbon dioxide or phenylisocyanate. In the presence of B(C₆F₅)₃, it forms the coupling product between two CO-derived units. The resulting compound 13 rearranged to a doubly O-borylated endiolate, with both of the central carbon atoms originating from carbon monoxide. The subsequent treatment with a silane gave a rare macrocyclic silicon endiolate.

Formation and Cycloaddition Reactions of a Reactive Boraalkene Stabilized Internally by N-Heterocyclic Carbene

The synthesis of element-carbon double bonds is of great importance for the development and understanding of reactive π-bonded systems in chemistry. The seven-membered heterocyclic system 4 b is readily made by internal C-H activation at a pendent isopropyl methyl group of the respective [(IPr)C₆ F₅ BH]⁺ borenium ion. Subsequent deprotonation with the IMes carbene gives the neutral cyclic boraalkene system 5 b. The B=C double bond in compound 5 b adds carbon dioxide, CS₂ , sulfur dioxide, phenyl isocyanate, an acetylenic ester or two NO molecules to give the corresponding four-membered ring annulated heterocycles. With sulfur or selenium 5 b gives the respective three-membered ring systems. N₂ O reacts with 5 b to give a mixture of the related oxaborirane 18 and a unique [B]OH containing diazoalkane product 19.

A BH Borenium-Derived Thioxoborane, Its Persulfide, and Their Li+-Induced Reactions with Alkynes and with Carbon Dioxide

Insertion of sulfur into the B-H bond of the BH borenium salt [IMes(C₆F₅)BH]⁺ followed by deprotonation gave the thioxoborane IMes(C₆F₅)B═S. Subsequent treatment with additional sulfur gave the corresponding boron persulfide, a NHC-stabilized boradithiirane. The B═S compound reacted with carbon dioxide in the presence of the lithium salt Li[B(C₆F₅)₄] by formal [2+2] cycloaddition to give a boron thiocarbonate-type product. The boron persulfide formally inserted phenyl acetylene into the B-S bond in the presence of Li[B(C₆F₅)₄] to give the respective five-membered heterocycle.
