Adsorptive Separation of Benzene, Cyclohexene, and Cyclohexane by Amorphous Nonporous Amide Naphthotube Solids

Highly Efficient Separation of BTEX via Amide Naphthotube Cavity-Confined Tandem C/N-H···π Interactions

The separation of BTEX [benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene (EB), and xylene isomers] poses a huge challenge in the industry, attributed to their similar structures and physical properties. Supramolecular compounds show great promise for hydrocarbon separation. Herein, we designed two pairs of endo-functionalized amide naphthotubes with methyl and benzyl side chains, which were first employed as chromatographic separation materials and exhibited high shape-selectivity for BTEX. In particular, the amide naphthotubes with methyl side chains provided complete separation toward BTEX and anti-3a showed high selectivity for the p-xylene over other isomers with αPX/OX = 9.34, αPX/MX = 5.50, and αPX/EB = 4.30. The mechanism of BTEX separation originates from the synergistic effect of specially confined tandem N-H···π and C-H···π interactions toward aromatic compounds. The findings of this research show promise for practical applications in efficiently separating crucial aromatic isomers.

Separation of cyclohexanol from cyclohexanol/cyclohexene mixtures by crystals of pillar[6]arene containing three benzoquinone units

Here, we develop a new absorbent for efficient separation of cyclohexanol (CHA-ol) and cyclohexene (CHA-ene) by using crystals of pillar[6]arene with three benzoquinone units (P3QA). P3QA crystals are found to show remarkable selectivity for CHA-ol in 50 : 50 (v/v) CHA-ol : CHA-ene mixtures with a purity of 95.2%, along with vapochromic behavior.

Vapochromic separation of toluene and pyridine azeotropes using adaptive macrocycle co-crystals

The separation of toluene (Tol) and pyridine (Py) azeotropes is significant in the chemical industry. Herein, we present a new method for the energy-efficient separation of Tol and Py using pillar[5]arene-based adaptive macrocycle co-crystals (MCCs) that can selectively separate Py from a Py/Tol equimolar mixture with 99.2% purity, accompanied by vapochromic behavior from white to yellow.

Double-walled Al-based MOF with large microporous specific surface area for trace benzene adsorption

Double-walled metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), synthesized using Zn and Co, are potential porous materials for trace benzene adsorption. Aluminum is with low-toxicity and abundance in nature, in comparison with Zn and Co. Therefore, a double-walled Al-based MOF, named as ZJU-520(Al), with large microporous specific surface area of 2235 m2 g-1, pore size distribution in the range of 9.26-12.99 Å and excellent chemical stability, was synthesized. ZJU-520(Al) is consisted by helical chain of AlO6 clusters and 4,6-Di(4-carboxyphenyl)pyrimidine ligands. Trace benzene adsorption of ZJU-520(Al) is up to 5.98 mmol g-1 at 298 K and P/P0 = 0.01. Adsorbed benzene molecules are trapped on two types of sites. One (site I) is near the AlO6 clusters, another (site II) is near the N atom of ligands, using Grand Canonical Monte Carlo simulations. ZJU-520(Al) can effectively separate trace benzene from mixed vapor flow of benzene and cyclohexane, due to the adsorption affinity of benzene higher than that of cyclohexane. Therefore, ZJU-520(Al) is a potential adsorbent for trace benzene adsorption and benzene/cyclohexane separation.

Clamparene: Synthesis, Structure, and Its Application in Spontaneous Formation of 3D Porous Crystals

Macrocyclic arenes have emerged as pivotal scaffolds in supramolecular chemistry. Despite their significant contributions to molecular recognition and diverse applications, challenges persist in the development of macrocyclic arene-based crystalline materials, particularly in achieving porosity and addressing limitations in adsorption efficiency resulting from the small cavity sizes of existing macrocyclic arenes. In this study, we present the design and synthesis of a novel macrocyclic arene, clamparene (CLP), featuring a rigid backbone, easy synthesis, and a sizable cavity. CLP self-assembles into one-dimensional sub-nanotubes that further organize into a three-dimensional porous framework in the solid state. The crystalline solid of CLP exhibits potential as a porous crystalline adsorbent for various benzene-based contaminants with rapid adsorption kinetics, large uptake amounts, and good recyclability.

Effect of Ligand Aromaticity on Cyclohexane and Benzene Sorption in IRMOFs: A Computational Study

A series of four isoreticular MOFs (IRMOF-1, -10, -14, and -16) were selected for a computational investigation of the effect of ligand aromaticity on the adsorption capacity of an aromatic VOC (benzene) compared to its nonaromatic analog (cyclohexane). The affinity of the adsorbates was evaluated by calculating Henry's constants and adsorption enthalpies. It has been evidenced that while KH values decrease with ligand elongation (IRMOF-10 and -16), inserting a pyrene core into the MOF structure (IRMOF-14) increases both the cyclohexane and benzene adsorption efficiency by ∼290 and 54%, respectively. To elucidate host-guest interactions, we sought to locate preferential adsorption sites in MOF structures for the two VOCs studied by using the GCMC method. It appears that benzene interacts with the metal center (Zn4O clusters) and most of the ligand while cyclohexane tends to localize preferentially only near the Zn4O clusters. Coadsorption isotherms (equimolar mixture of benzene and cyclohexane) demonstrated the preferential adsorption of cyclohexane due to the stronger affinity for the MOF structure. On the other hand, for other isoreticular structures, the ligand elongation leads to a shift of the adsorption curve of cyclohexane caused by pore size increase and therefore less interactions with the walls. This phenomenon is counterbalanced in the case of IRMOF-14 due to stronger interactions between the cyclohexane and pyrene groups. The present results thus open perspectives in the design of promising MOF candidates for high-performing separation and sorption/detection of hydrocarbon VOCs.

Study of Drug Delivery Using Purely Organic Macrocyclic Containers-Cucurbit[7]uril and Pillararene

An impaired immune system is the root of various human ailments provoking the urge to find vehicle-mediated quick delivery of small drug molecules and other vital metabolites to specific tissues and organs. Thus, drug delivery strategies are in need of improvement in therapeutic efficacy. It can be achieved only by increasing the drug-loading capacity, increasing the sustained release of a drug to its target site, easy relocation of drug molecules associated with facile complexation-induced properties of molecular vehicles, and high stimuli-responsive drug administration. Supramolecular drug delivery systems (SDDS) provide a much needed robust yet facile platform for fabricating innovative drug nanocarriers assembled by thermodynamically noncovalent interaction with the tunable framework and above-mentioned properties. Measures of cytotoxicity and biocompatibility are the two main criteria that lie at the root of any promising medicinal applications. This Review features significant advancements in (i) supramolecular host-guest complexation using cucurbit[7]uril (CB[7]), (ii) encapsulation of the drug and its delivery application tailored for CB[7], (iii) self-assembly of supramolecular amphiphiles, (iv) supramolecular guest relay using host-protein nanocavities, (v) pillararene (a unique macrocyclic host)-mediated SDDS for the delivery of smart nanodrugs for siRNA, fluorescent molecules, and insulin for juvenile diabetes. Furthermore, fundamental questions and future hurdles related to smart SDDS based on CB[7] and pillararenes and their future promising breakthrough implementations are also distinctly outlined in this Review.

Applications of Supramolecular Polymers Generated from Pillar[n]arene-Based Molecules

Supramolecular chemistry enables the manipulation of functional components on a molecular scale, facilitating a "bottom-up" approach to govern the sizes and structures of supramolecular materials. Using dynamic non-covalent interactions, supramolecular polymers can create materials with reversible and degradable characteristics and the abilities to self-heal and respond to external stimuli. Pillar[n]arene represents a novel class of macrocyclic hosts, emerging after cyclodextrins, crown ethers, calixarenes, and cucurbiturils. Its significance lies in its distinctive structure, comparing an electron-rich cavity and two finely adjustable rims, which has sparked considerable interest. Furthermore, the straightforward synthesis, uncomplicated functionalization, and remarkable properties of pillar[n]arene based on supramolecular interactions make it an excellent candidate for material construction, particularly in generating interpenetrating supramolecular polymers. Polymers resulting from supramolecular interactions involving pillar[n]arene find potential in various applications, including fluorescence sensors, substance adsorption and separation, catalysis, light-harvesting systems, artificial nanochannels, and drug delivery. In this context, we provide an overview of these recent frontier research fields in the use of pillar[n]arene-based supramolecular polymers, which serves as a source of inspiration for the creation of innovative functional polymer materials derived from pillar[n]arene derivatives.

Flexible Luminescent Hydrogen-bonded Organic Framework for the Separation of Benzene and Cyclohexane

A nonplanar phenothiazine derivative with three cyano moieties (PTTCN) is designed and synthesized to achieve functional crystals for absorptive separation of benzene and cyclohexane. PTTCN can crystallize into two kinds of crystals with different fluorescence colors in different solvent systems. The molecules in two crystals are in different stereo isomeric forms of nitrogen, quasi axial (ax), and quasi equatorial (eq). The crystals with blue fluorescence in ax form may selectively adsorb benzene by a single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) transformation, but separated benzene from a benzene/cyclohexane equimolar mixture with a low purity of 79.6%. Interestingly, PTTCN molecules with eq form and benzene co-assembled to construct a hydrogen-bonded framework (X-HOF-4) with S-type solvent channels and yellow-green fluorescence, and can release benzene to form nonporous guest-free crystal under heating. Such nonporous crystals strongly favor aromatic benzene over cyclohexane and may selectively reabsorb benzene from benzene/cyclohexane equimolar mixture to recover original framework, and the purity of benzene can reach ≈96.5% after release from framework. Moreover, reversible transformation between the nonporous crystals and the guest-containing crystals allows the material to be reused.

Supramolecular Architectures Bearing Half-Sandwich Iridium- or Rhodium-Based Carboranes: Design, Synthesis, and Applications

The utilization of carboranes in supramolecular chemistry has attracted considerable attention. The unique spatial configuration and weak interaction forces of carboranes can help to explore the properties of supramolecular complexes, particularly via host-guest chemistry. Additionally, certain difficulties encountered in carborane development─such as controlled B-H bond activation─can be overcome by judiciously selecting metal centers and their adjacent ligands. However, few studies are being conducted in this nascent research area. With advances in this field, novel carborane-based supramolecular complexes will likely be prepared, structurally characterized, and intrinsically investigated. To expedite these efforts, we present major findings from recent studies, including π-π interactions, host-guest associations, and steric effects, which have been leveraged to implement a regioselective process for activating B(2,9)-, B(2,8)-, and B(2,7)-H bonds of para-carboranes and B(4,7)-H bonds of ortho-carboranes. Future studies should clarify the unique weak interactions of carboranes and their potential for enhancing the utility of supramolecular complexes. Although carboranes exhibit several unique weak interactions (such as dihydrogen-bond [Bδ+-Hδ-···Hδ+-Cδ-], Bδ+-Hδ-···M+, and Bδ+-Hδ-···π interactions), the manner in which they can be utilized remains unclear. Supramolecular complexes, particularly those based on host-guest chemistry, can be utilized as a platform for demonstrating potential applications of these weak interactions. Owing to the importance of alkane separation, applications related to the recognition and separation of alkane isomers via dihydrogen-bond interactions are primarily summarized. Advances in the research of unique weak interactions in carboranes will certainly lead to more possibilities for supramolecular chemistry.

Industrial Separation Challenges: How Does Supramolecular Chemistry Help?

The chemical industry and the chemical processes underscoring it are under intense scrutiny as the demands for the transition to more sustainable and environmentally friendly practices are increasing. Traditional industrial separation systems, such as thermally driven distillation for hydrocarbon purification, are energy intensive. The development of more energy efficient separation technologies is thus emerging as a critical need, as is the creation of new materials that may permit a transition away from classic distillation-based separations. In this Perspective, we focus on porous organic cages and macrocycles that can adsorb guest molecules selectively through various host-guest interactions and permit molecular sieving behavior at the molecular level. Specifically, we summarize the recent advances where receptor-based adsorbent materials have been shown to be effective for industrially relevant hydrocarbon separations, highlighting the underlying host-guest interactions that impart selectivity and permit the observed separations. This approach to sustainable separations is currently in its infancy. Nevertheless, several receptor-based adsorbent materials with extrinsic/intrinsic voids or special functional groups have been reported in recent years that can selectively capture various targeted guest molecules. We believe that the understanding of the interactions that drive selectivity at a molecular level accruing from these initial systems will permit an ever-more-effective "bottom-up" design of tailored molecular sieves that, in due course, will allow adsorbent material-based approaches to separations to transition from the laboratory into an industrial setting.

Nonporous amorphous superadsorbents for highly effective and selective adsorption of iodine in water

Adsorbents widely utilized for environmental remediation, water purification, and gas storage have been usually reported to be either porous or crystalline materials. In this contribution, we report the synthesis of two covalent organic superphane cages, that are utilized as the nonporous amorphous superadsorbents for aqueous iodine adsorption with the record-breaking iodine adsorption capability and selectivity. In the static adsorption system, the cages exhibit iodine uptake capacity of up to 8.41 g g-1 in I2 aqueous solution and 9.01 g g-1 in I3- (KI/I2) aqueous solution, respectively, even in the presence of a large excess of competing anions. In the dynamic flow-through experiment, the aqueous iodine adsorption capability for I2 and I3- can reach up to 3.59 and 5.79 g g-1, respectively. Moreover, these two superphane cages are able to remove trace iodine in aqueous media from ppm level (5.0 ppm) down to ppb level concentration (as low as 11 ppb). Based on a binding-induced adsorption mechanism, such nonporous amorphous molecular materials prove superior to all existing porous adsorbents. This study can open up a new avenue for development of state-of-the-art adsorption materials for practical uses with conceptionally new nonporous amorphous superadsorbents (NAS).

Potential of nonporous adaptive crystals for hydrocarbon separation

Hydrocarbon separation is an important process in the field of petrochemical industry, which provides a variety of raw materials for industrial production and a strong support for the development of national economy. However, traditional separation processes involve huge energy consumption. Adsorptive separation based on nonporous adaptive crystal (NAC) materials is considered as an attractive green alternative to traditional energy-intensive separation technologies due to its advantages of low energy consumption, high chemical and thermal stability, excellent selective adsorption and separation performance, and outstanding recyclability. Considering the exceptional potential of NAC materials for hydrocarbon separation, this review comprehensively summarizes recent advances in various supramolecular host-based NACs. Moreover, the current challenges and future directions are illustrated in detail. It is expected that this review will provide useful and timely references for researchers in this area. Based on a large number of state-of-the-art studies, the review will definitely advance the development of NAC materials for hydrocarbon separation and stimulate more interesting studies in related fields.

Efficient separation of monobromotoluene isomers by nonporous adaptive perbromoethylated pillar[5]arene crystals

Herein we report an efficient adsorptive separation approach for monobromotoluene isomers using nonporous adaptive crystals of perbromoethylated pillar[5]arene (BrP5). The purity of separated m-bromotoluene from an equal volume mixture of m-bromotoluene and o-bromotoluene reaches 96.6% in one cycle and the adsorbent BrP5 can be reused without losing separation performance.

Separation of Cyclohexanone and Cyclohexanol by Adaptive Pillar[5]arene Cocrystals Accompanied by Vapochromic Behavior

The separation of cyclohexanone (CHA-one) and cyclohexanol (CHA-ol) mixtures is of great importance in the chemical industry. Current technology exploits multiple steps of energy-intensive rectification due to their close boiling points. Herein, we report a new and energy-efficient adsorptive separation method employing binary adaptive macrocycle cocrystals (MCCs) built with π-electron-rich pillar[5]arene (P5) and an electron-deficient naphthalenediimide derivative (NDI) that can selectively separate CHA-one from an equimolar CHA-one/CHA-ol mixture with >99% purity. Intriguingly, this adsorptive separation process is accompanied by vapochromic behavior from pink to dark brown. Single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction analyses reveal that the adsorptive selectivity and vapochromic property are derived from the CHA-one vapor inside the cocrystal lattice voids triggering solid-state structural transformations to yield charge-transfer (CT) cocrystals. Moreover, the reversible transformations make the cocrystalline materials highly recyclable.

Synthesis of Carborane-Backbone Metallacycles for Highly Selective Capture of n-Pentane

The specific recognition and separation of alkanes with similar molecular structures and close boiling points face significant scientific challenges and industrial demands. Here, rectangular carborane-based metallacycles were designed to selectively encapsulate n-pentane from n-pentane, iso-pentane, and cyclo-pentane mixtures in a simple-to-operate and more energy-efficient way. Metallacycle 1, bearing 1,2-di(4-pyridyl) ethylene, can selectively separate n-pentane from these three-component mixtures with a purity of 97%. The selectivity is ascribed to the capture of the preferred guest with matching size, C-H···π interactions, and potential B-H^δ-···H^δ+-C interactions. Besides, the removal of n-pentane gives rise to original guest-free carborane-based metallacycles, which can be recycled without losing performance. Considering the variety of substituted carborane derivatives, metal ions, and organic linkers, these new carborane-based supramolecular coordination complexes (SCCs) may be broadly applicable to other challenging recognition and separation systems with good performance.

Adsorptive separation of para-xylene by nonporous adaptive crystals of phenanthrene[2]arene

In this work, we developed a new method for the preparation of phenanthrene[2]arene on a large-scale. Meanwhile, the synthetic phenanthrene[2]arene has been successfully used as nonporous adaptive crystals for the separation of para-xylene (pX) from xylene isomers. The crystal structure revealed that one host molecule can adsorb one pX molecule to form the 1@pX complex, in which pX is located in the cavity of the host.

A new method for the preparation of phenanthrene[2]arene on a large-scale was developed. The synthetic phenanthrene[2]arene has been successfully used as nonporous adaptive crystals for the separation of para-xylene from xylene isomers.

State- and water repellency-controllable molecular glass of pillar[5]arenes with fluoroalkyl groups by guest vapors

Molecular glasses are low-molecular-weight organic compounds that are stable in the amorphous state at room temperature. Herein, we report a state- and water repellency-controllable molecular glass by n-alkane guest vapors. We observed that a macrocyclic host compound pillar[5]arene with the C₂F₅ fluoroalkyl groups changes from the crystalline to the amorphous state (molecular glass) by heating above its melting point and then cooling to room temperature. The pillar[5]arene molecular glass shows reversible transitions between amorphous and crystalline states by uptake and release of the n-alkane guest vapors, respectively. Furthermore, the n-alkane guest vapor-induced reversible changes in the water contact angle were also observed: water contact angles increased and then reverted back to the original state by the uptake and release of the n-alkane guest vapors, respectively, along with the changes in the chemical structure and roughness on the surface of the molecular glass. The water repellency of the molecular glass could be controlled by tuning the uptake ratio of the n-alkane guest vapor.

Pillar[5]arenes with C₂F₅ substituents showed reversible amorphous–crystal transitions by uptake and release of n-alkane vapors. The amorphous–crystal transitions triggered macroscopic property change such as water repellency.

Adsorptive separation of picoline isomers by adaptive calix[3]acridan crystals

The exploration of macrocycle-based nonporous adaptive crystals (NACs) for adsorption and separation has been one of the hotspots in supramolecular chemistry and crystal engineering. Herein, we developed calix[3]acridan-based NACs to separate industrially important 4-picoline from its isomer mixtures with over 93.8% purity.

Highly Selective Separation of Benzene and Cyclohexane in a Spatially Confined Carborane Metallacage

Separation of light hydrocarbons (C₁-C₉) represents one of the "seven chemical separations to change the world". Boron clusters can potentially play an important role in chemical separation, due to their unique three-dimensional structures and their ability to promote a potentially rich array of weak noncovalent interactions. Herein, we report the rational design of metallacages with carborane functionality and cooperative dihydrogen binding sites for the highly selective capture of cyclohexane molecules. The metallacage 1, bearing the ligand 2,4,6-tris(4-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine (TPT), can produce cyclohexane with a purity of 98.5% in a single adsorption-desorption cycle from an equimolar mixture of benzene and cyclohexane. In addition, cyclohexene molecules can be also encapsulated inside the metallacage 1. This selective encapsulation was attributed to spatial confinement effects, C-H···π interactions, and particularly dihydrogen-bond interactions. This work suggests exciting future applications of carborane cages in supramolecular chemistry for the selective adsorption and separation of alkane molecules and may open up a new research direction in host-guest chemistry.

Pillar[3]trianglamines: deeper cavity triangular macrocycles for selective hexene isomer separation

The separation of α-olefins and their corresponding isomers continues to be a big challenge for the chemical industry due to their overlapping physical properties and low relative volatility. Herein, pillar[3]trianglamine (P-TA) macrocycles were synthesized for the molecular-sieving-like separation of 1-hexene (1-He) selectively over its positional isomer trans-3-hexene (trans-3-He) in the vapor and liquid state. This allyl-functionalized macrocycle features a deeper cavity compared to the previously reported trianglamine host molecules. Solid-vapor sorption experiments verified the successful separation of 1-He from an equimolar mixture of 1-He and trans-3-He. Single-crystal structures and powder X-ray diffraction patterns suggest that this selective adsorption arises from the formation of a thermodynamically stable host-guest complex between 1-He and P-TA. A reversible transformation between the nonporous guest-free structure and the guest-containing structure shows that 1-He separation can be carried out over multiple cycles without any loss of performance. Significantly, P-TA can separate 1-He directly from a liquid isomeric mixture and thus P-TA modified silica sieves (SBA-15) showed the ability to selectively separate 1-He when utilized as a stationary phase in column chromatography. This capitalizes on the prospects of employing macrocyclic hosts as molecular recognition units in real-life separations for sustainable and energy-efficient industrial practices.

Cagearenes: synthesis, characterization, and application for programmed vapor release

Here, we announce the establishment of a new family of organic molecular cages, named cagearenes, by taking advantage of a versatile strategy. These cagearenes were prepared via the Friedel–Crafts reaction by condensing two equivalents of a precursor bearing three 1,4-dimethoxybenzene groups and three equivalents of formaldehyde. Two cages, namely cagearene-1 and cagearene-2, are obtained and well characterized. The cagearene-1 solid exhibits the ability to adsorb benzene vapour from an equimolar benzene/cyclohexane mixture with a purity of 91.1%. Then, the adsorbed benzene molecules can be released from the cage at a relatively lower temperature, namely 70 °C, as a consequence of which, cyclohexane with a high purity was left within the cage solid. Heating the cage solid further at 130 °C led to the production of cyclohexane with a purity up to 98.7%. As inferred from the single crystal structures and theoretical calculations, the ability of the cage in programmed release of benzene and cyclohexane results from the different binding modes of these two guests.

Two organic cages, cagearene-1 and cagearene-2, are prepared. The cagearene-1 solid selectively absorbs benzene vapor from a benzene/cyclohexane mixture and is used to achieve temperature-controlled programmed vapor release.

Phenanthrene[2]arene: synthesis and application as nonporous adaptive crystals in the separation of benzene from cyclohexane

Phenanthrene[2]arene 1 with excellent adsorption capacity for benzene was synthesized in high yield. Activated crystals of 1 have been successfully used to separate PhH from equimolar mixture of PhH and Cy and the purity of the PhH can reach 98.4%.

Separation of pyrrolidine from tetrahydrofuran by pillar[6]arene-based nonporous adaptive crystals

Pyrrolidine, an important feedstock in the chemical industry, is commonly produced via vapor-phase catalytic ammoniation of tetrahydrofuran (THF). Obtaining pyrrolidine with high purity and low energy cost has extremely high economic and environmental values. Here we offer a rapid and energy-saving method for adsorptive separation of pyrrolidine and THF by using nonporous adaptive crystals of per-ethyl pillar[6]arene (EtP6). EtP6 crystals show a superior preference towards pyrrolidine in 50 : 50 (v/v) pyrrolidine/THF mixture vapor, resulting in rapid separation. The purity of pyrrolidine reaches 95% in 15 min of separation, and after 2 h, the purity is found to be 99.9%. Single-crystal structures demonstrate that the selectivity is based on the stability difference of host–guest structures after uptake of THF or pyrrolidine and non-covalent interactions in the crystals. Besides, EtP6 crystals can be recycled efficiently after the separation process owing to reversible transformations between the guest-free and guest-loaded EtP6.

Here we offer a rapid and energy-saving method for adsorptive separation of pyrrolidine and tetrahydrofuran by using nonporous adaptive crystals of per-ethyl pillar[6]arene.

An electron-deficient supramolecular macrocyclic host for the selective separation of aromatics and cyclic aliphatics

Host 1 with an electron-deficient nanometer-sized cavity were synthesized in two steps. Moreover, 1 has been successfully used as a gas chromatographic stationary phase to prepare a packed column for the separation of PhH/Cy and Tol/MCy.

Synthesis of a luminescent macrocycle and its crystalline structure-adaptive transformation

We report that the marriage of macrocycle chemistry and crystal engineering provides interesting macrocycle crystals with switchable luminescence and structure-adaptive transformation.

Bottom-Up Solid-State Molecular Assembly via Guest-Induced Intermolecular Interactions

The manipulation of molecular motions to construct highly ordered supramolecular architectures from chaos in the solid state is considered to be far more complex and challenging in comparison to that in solution. In this work, a bottom-up molecular assembly approach based on a newly designed skeleton-trimmed pillar[5]arene analogue, namely the permethylated leggero pillar[5]arene MeP[5]L, is developed in the solid state. An amorphous powder of MeP[5]L can take up certain guest vapors to form various ordered linker-containing solid-state molecular assemblies, which can be further used to construct a thermodynamically favored linker-free superstructure upon heating. These approaches are driven by vapor-induced solid-state molecular motions followed by a thermally triggered phase-to-phase transformation. The intermolecular interactions play a crucial role in controlling the molecular arrangements in the resulting assemblies. This research will open new insights into exploring controllable molecular motions and assemblies in the solid state, providing new perspectives in supramolecular chemistry and materials.

Adsorptive separation of cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone by nonporous adaptive crystals of RhombicArene

As feedstock chemicals with similar boiling points, cyclohexanol (CHOL) and cyclohexanone (CHON) are often obtained as mixtures during production processes. Separation of mixed CHOL and CHON is important but energy-consuming by distillation. Here we report the development of a new macrocycle RhombicArene, which forms a host-guest complex with CHON through C-H⋯π interactions and hydrogen bonds. The nonporous adaptive crystals of RhombicArene exhibit excellent capability for rapid (30 minutes), exclusive (>99.9%), and recyclable vapor adsorption of CHON in the presence of CHOL under mild and user-friendly conditions.

Macrocyclic host molecules with aromatic building blocks: the state of the art and progress

Macrocyclic host molecules play the central role in host-guest chemistry and supramolecular chemistry. The highly structural symmetry of macrocyclic host molecules can meet people's pursuit of aesthetics in molecular design, and generally means a balance of design, synthesis, properties and applications. For macrocyclic host molecules with highly symmetrical structures, building blocks, which could be described as repeat units as well, are the most fundamental elements for molecular design. The structural features and recognition ability of macrocyclic host molecules are determined by the building blocks and their connection patterns. Using different building blocks, different macrocyclic host molecules could be designed and synthesized. With decades of developments of host-guest chemistry and supramolecular chemistry, diverse macrocyclic host molecules with different building blocks have been designed and synthesized. Aromatic building blocks are a big family among the various building blocks used in constructing macrocyclic host molecules. In this feature article, the recent developments of macrocyclic host molecules with aromatic building blocks were summarized and discussed.

Nonporous Adaptive Calix[4]pyrrole Crystals for Polar Compound Separations

The use of molecular crystalline materials for the separation and purification of chemical raw materials, particularly polar compounds with similar physical and chemical properties, represents an ongoing challenge. This is particularly true for volatile feedstocks that form binary azeotropes. Here we report a new cavity-extended version of calix[4]pyrrole (C4P) that readily forms nonporous adaptive crystals (NACs). These C4P-based NACs allow pyridine to be separated from toluene/pyridine mixtures with nearly 100% purity, as well as the removal of 1,4-dioxane from 1,4-dioxane/water mixtures with high adsorption capacity. Removal of the polar guest (pyridine or 1,4-dioxane) from the guest-loaded NACs by heating under vacuum produces the guest-free crystalline form. In the case of both guests, the C4P material could be reused as demonstrated through 10 uptake and release cycles without apparent performance loss.

Supramolecular tessellations by the exo-wall interactions of pagoda[4]arene

Supramolecular tessellation has gained increasing interest in supramolecular chemistry for its structural aesthetics and potential applications in optics, magnetics and catalysis. In this work, a new kind of supramolecular tessellations (STs) have been fabricated by the exo-wall interactions of pagoda[4]arene (P4). ST with rhombic tiling pattern was first constructed by P4 itself through favorable π···π interactions between anthracene units of adjacent P4. Notably, various highly ordered STs with different tiling patterns have been fabricated based on exo-wall charge transfer interactions between electron-rich P4 and electron-deficient guests including 1,4-dinitrobenzene, terephthalonitrile and tetrafluoroterephthalonitrile. Interestingly, solvent modulation and guest selection played a crucial role in controlling the molecular arrangements in the co-crystal superstructures. This work not only proves that P4 is an excellent macrocyclic building block for the fabrication of various STs, but also provides a new perspective and opportunity for the design and construction of supramolecular two-dimensional organic materials.

Harnessing Shape Complementarity for Upgraded Cyclohexane Purification through Adaptive Bottlenecked Pores in an Imidazole-Containing MOF

Shape complementarity is a biological craft for precisely binding substrates at protein-protein interfaces. An analogy to such a function can be drawn conceptually for crystalline porous solids; yet the manifested entities are rare in reticular chemistry. The bottleneck-shaped pores carved out of a metal-organic framework, Zn(MIBA)₂ (aka. MAF-stu-13), can perfectly accommodate benzene molecules. Remarkably, its framework adapts to the optimal guest binding-the enhanced host-guest interactions in the neck in turn minimize the guest-guest repulsion in the pore to the extent it turns into attraction-as demonstrated by the combined X-ray structural and DFT computational studies. This adaptive material can be used for liquid-phase production of ultrahigh-purity (≥99 %) cyclohexane, achieving a balance between uptake capacity and separation selectivity and surpassing the performances of other porous and nonporous crystals reported recently (e.g. product purity 99.4 % vs. 97.5 % to date).

Synergistic covalent-and-supramolecular polymers connected by [2]pseudorotaxane moieties

Synergistic covalent-and-supramolecular polymers, in which covalent polymers and supramolecular polymers connect with each other through [2]pseudorotaxane moieties, are designed and synthesized. The unique topological structure effectively enhances the synergistic effect between these two polymers, thereby generating a novel class of mechanically adaptive materials.

Reversing Benzene/Cyclohexane Selectivity through Varying Supramolecular Interactions Using Aliphatic, Isoreticular MOFs

Effective solid-state adsorbent materials, such as metal organic frameworks (MOFs), rely upon tailored void spaces for selective adsorption of one component from a mixture. This is particularly crucial when separating challenging mixtures such as benzene (Bz) and cyclohexane (Cy) requiring a highly expensive and energy intensive process. Employing bulky "3D-linkers" to construct MOFs leads to materials with unique, contoured pore shapes which consequently allow for significant control over guest adsorption preferences. Investigation into these selectivity preferences is key to identifying suitable materials for industrial separations and is an area currently underexplored. Here, we provide an in-depth investigation exploring the selectivity path between planar and 3D-linkers and their preference to adsorb either Cy or Bz. To validate this principle, the adsorption selectivity of Cy and Bz in 3DL-MOF-1 ([Zn₄O(pdc)₃] (pdc = bicylo[1.1.1]pentane-1,3-dicarboxylate), CUB-5, and MOF-5 was explored. MOF-5 exhibits a selective preference for Cy adsorption at low pressures, contrary to popular belief, while CUB-5 and 3DL-MOF-1 are Bz selective. DFT-D3 calculations and breakthrough simulations explore this behavior and highlight CUB-5 and MOF-5 as strong candidates for future separation materials.

Effective and Rapid Removal of Polar Organic Micropollutants from Water by Amide Naphthotube-Crosslinked Polymers

It is challenging to remove polar organic micropollutants from water through adsorption-mediated processes. Macrocycle-crosslinked polymers were recently shown to be effective adsorbents for nonpolar or charged organic micropollutants through specific host-guest binding, but are rarely used for the treatment of neutral and polar organic micropollutants. This is due to the challenge of recognizing polar molecules in water by macrocyclic hosts. In this research, we report two amide naphthotube-crosslinked polymers which can effectively and rapidly adsorb a wide scope of polar organic micropollutants from water through biomimetic molecular recognition. Amide naphthotubes possess hydrogen bonding sites in their deep hydrophobic cavities and can effectively bind polar organic micropollutants in water through the hydrophobic effects and shielded hydrogen bonds. The cross-linked polymers containing amide naphthotubes are even able to remove a complex mixture of organic micropollutants from water and the used materials can be easily regenerated through washing with MeOH or EtOH. This research provides a solution for the treatment of polar organic micropollutants by using biomimetic molecular recognition in water.

Adsorptive Molecular Sieving of Styrene over Ethylbenzene by Trianglimine Crystals

The separation of styrene (ST) and ethylbenzene (EB) mixtures is of great importance in the petrochemical and plastics industries. Current technology employs multiple cycles of energy-intensive distillation due to the very close boiling points of ST and EB. Here, we show that the molecular sieving properties of easily scalable and stable trianglimine crystals offer ultrahigh selectivity (99%) for styrene separation. The unique molecular sieving properties of trianglimine crystals are corroborated by DFT calculations, suggesting that the incorporation of the nonplanar EB requires a significant deformation of the macrocyclic cavity whereas the planar ST can be easily accommodated in the cavity.

Selective adsorptive separation of cyclohexane over benzene using thienothiophene cages

The selective separation of benzene (Bz) and cyclohexane (Cy) is one of the most challenging chemical separations in the petrochemical and oil industries. In this work, we report an environmentally friendly and energy saving approach to separate Cy over Bz using thienothiophene cages (ThT-cages) with adaptive porosity. Interestingly, cyclohexane was readily captured selectively from an equimolar benzene/cyclohexane mixture with a purity of 94%. This high selectivity arises from the C–H⋯S, C–H⋯π and C–H⋯N interactions between Cy and the thienothiophene ligand. Reversible transformation between the nonporous guest-free structure and the host–guest assembly, endows this system with excellent recyclability with minimal energy requirements.

Highly Selective Separation of Isopropylbenzene and α-Methylstyrene by Nonporous Adaptive Crystals of Perbromoethylated Pillararene via Vapor- and Liquid-Phase Adsorptions

Isopropylbenzene (IPB) and α-methylstyrene (AMS), two members of C9 aromatics, are important in both industrial production and laboratory research, but the separation of IPB/AMS mixtures is still a big challenge. Here, we provide a new strategy to separate IPB and AMS using nonporous adaptive crystals of four pillararenes, perethylated pillar[5]arene, perethylated pillar[6]arene, perbromoethylated pillar[5]arene, and perbromoethylated pillar[6]arene (BrP6). Among them, BrP6 selectively adsorbs IPB from an equal volume mixture of IPB and AMS with >95% purity for solid-vapor phase adsorption and >94% purity for solid-liquid phase adsorption, while the selectivities for the other three pillararenes are unsatisfactory. Single-crystal structural analyses combined with powder X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry experiments demonstrate that the selectivity arises from the different stabilities of guest-loaded BrP6 crystals. Moreover, the reversible transitions between guest-free and IPB-loaded structures indicate the preeminent recycling performance of BrP6 crystals.
