Enhanced Catalysis under 2D Silica: A CO Oxidation Study

Dynamic Construction and Maintenance of Confined Nanoregions via Hydrogen-Bond Networks between Acetylene Reactants and a Polyoxometalate-Based Metal-Organic Framework

The nanoconfinement effect in catalysis has attracted much attention because it provides a novel means of regulating the molecular properties and related reactions. Confined nanoregions composed of both reactants and catalysts through weak interactions are expected to improve the catalytic performance and promote the mass transport of relevant molecules simultaneously. However, at reaction temperatures, the structural variation of such confined spaces constructed via weak interactions remains unclear. Herein, through density functional theory calculations combined with ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, we have systematically investigated the dynamic structural evolution of the confined space constructed by acetylene reactants and a polyoxometalate-based metal-organic framework (POMOF) via hydrogen-bond networks. It is found that, at the reaction temperature of acetylene semihydrogenation, the hydrogen-bond networks and generated confined nanoregions are not rigid but are constantly changing and dynamically maintained. The steering role played by the O atoms at the surfaces of the polyoxometalate clusters is essential for generation of the hydrogen-bond networks and maintenance of the nanoregions. Upon confinement, the acetylene reactants can be better activated than those in an unconstrained atmosphere, which is reflected by the different dynamic distributions of the ∠CHC bending magnitude. Moreover, from a comparison of the distinct interaction characteristics between acetylene/ethylene and POMOF, the different manifestations in the adsorption energy variations of the confined molecules can be interpreted. This work helps to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of confined catalysis and may promote its application in practical catalytic processes.

Dilute Alloys Based on Au, Ag, or Cu for Efficient Catalysis: From Synthesis to Active Sites

The development of new catalyst materials for energy-efficient chemical synthesis is critical as over 80% of industrial processes rely on catalysts, with many of the most energy-intensive processes specifically using heterogeneous catalysis. Catalytic performance is a complex interplay of phenomena involving temperature, pressure, gas composition, surface composition, and structure over multiple length and time scales. In response to this complexity, the integrated approach to heterogeneous dilute alloy catalysis reviewed here brings together materials synthesis, mechanistic surface chemistry, reaction kinetics, in situ and operando characterization, and theoretical calculations in a coordinated effort to develop design principles to predict and improve catalytic selectivity. Dilute alloy catalysts─in which isolated atoms or small ensembles of the minority metal on the host metal lead to enhanced reactivity while retaining selectivity─are particularly promising as selective catalysts. Several dilute alloy materials using Au, Ag, and Cu as the majority host element, including more recently introduced support-free nanoporous metals and oxide-supported nanoparticle "raspberry colloid templated (RCT)" materials, are reviewed for selective oxidation and hydrogenation reactions. Progress in understanding how such dilute alloy catalysts can be used to enhance selectivity of key synthetic reactions is reviewed, including quantitative scaling from model studies to catalytic conditions. The dynamic evolution of catalyst structure and composition studied in surface science and catalytic conditions and their relationship to catalytic function are also discussed, followed by advanced characterization and theoretical modeling that have been developed to determine the distribution of minority metal atoms at or near the surface. The integrated approach demonstrates the success of bridging the divide between fundamental knowledge and design of catalytic processes in complex catalytic systems, which can accelerate the development of new and efficient catalytic processes.

Water Formation Reaction under Interfacial Confinement: Al0.25Si0.75O2 on O-Ru(0001)

Confined nanosized spaces at the interface between a metal and a seemingly inert material, such as a silicate, have recently been shown to influence the chemistry at the metal surface. In prior work, we observed that a bilayer (BL) silica on Ru(0001) can change the reaction pathway of the water formation reaction (WFR) near room temperature when compared to the bare metal. In this work, we looked at the effect of doping the silicate with Al, resulting in a stoichiometry of Al_0.25Si_0.75O₂. We investigated the kinetics of WFR at elevated H₂ pressures and various temperatures under interfacial confinement using ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The apparent activation energy was lower than that on bare Ru(0001) but higher than that on the BL-silica/Ru(0001). The apparent reaction order with respect to H₂ was also determined. The increased residence time of water at the surface, resulting from the presence of the BL-aluminosilicate (and its subsequent electrostatic stabilization), favors the so-called disproportionation reaction pathway (*H₂O + *O ↔ 2 *OH), but with a higher energy barrier than for pure BL-silica.

Exfoliating silica bilayers via intercalation at the silica/transition metal interface

The growth of the silica (SiO₂) bilayer (BL) films on transition metal (TM) surfaces creates a new class of two-dimensional (2D) crystalline, self-contained materials that interact weakly with the TM substrate. The BL-silica/TM heterojunction has shown unique physical and chemical properties that can lead to new chemical reaction mechanisms under the sub-nm confinement and broad potential applications ranging from surface protection, nano transistors, molecular sieves to nuclear waste removal. Novel applications of BL-silica can be further explored as a constituent of van der Waals assembly of 2D materials. Key to these applications is an unmet technical challenge to exfoliate and transfer BL-silica films in a large area from one substrate to another without material damage. In this study, we propose a new exfoliation mechanism based on gas molecule intercalation from density functional theory studies of the BL-silica/TM heterojunction. We found that the intercalation of O atoms and CO molecules at the BL-silica/TM interface weakens the BL-silica-TM hybridization, which results in an exponential decrease of the exfoliation energy against the interface distance as the coverage of interfacial species increases. This new intercalation mechanism opens up the opportunity for non-damaging exfoliation and transfer of large area silica bilayers.
