Surface Functionalization of Black Phosphorus with Nitrenes: Identification of P=N Bonds by Using Isotopic Labeling

2D Amino-Functionalized Black Phosphorus: A New Approach to Improve Hydrogen Gas Detection Performance

In recent years, hydrogen has gained attention as a potential solution to replace fossil fuels, thus reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The development of ever improving hydrogen sensors is a topic that is constantly under study due to concerns about the inherent risk of leaks of this gas and potential explosions. In this work, a new, long-term, stable phosphorene-based sensor was developed for hydrogen detection. A simple functionalization of phosphorene using urea was employed to synthesize an air-stable material, subsequently used to prepare films for gas sensing applications, via the drop casting method. The material was deeply characterized by different techniques (scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron, and Raman spectroscopy), and the stability of the material in a noninert atmosphere was evaluated. The phosphorene-based sensor exhibited high sensitivity (up to 700 ppm) and selectivity toward hydrogen at room temperature, as well as long-term stability over five months under ambient conditions. To gain further insight into the gas sensing mechanism over the surface, we employed a dedicated apparatus, namely operando diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform, by exposing the chemoresistive sensor to hydrogen gas under dry air conditions.

Characterization of emerging 2D materials after chemical functionalization

The chemical modification of 2D materials has proven a powerful tool to fine tune their properties. With this motivation, the development of new reactions has moved extremely fast. The need for speed, together with the intrinsic heterogeneity of the samples, has sometimes led to permissiveness in the purification and characterization protocols. In this review, we present the main tools available for the chemical characterization of functionalized 2D materials, and the information that can be derived from each of them. We then describe examples of chemical modification of 2D materials other than graphene, focusing on the chemical description of the products. We have intentionally selected examples where an above-average characterization effort has been carried out, yet we find some cases where further information would have been welcome. Our aim is to bring together the toolbox of techniques and practical examples on how to use them, to serve as guidelines for the full characterization of covalently modified 2D materials.

Reaction Chemistry at Discrete Organometallic Fragments on Black Phosphorus

Black phosphorus (bP) is a two-dimensional van der Waals material unique in its potential to serve as a support for single-site catalysts due to its similarity to molecular phosphines, ligands quintessential in homogeneous catalysis. However, there is a scarcity of synthetic methods to install single metal centers on the bP lattice. Here, we demonstrate the functionalization of bP nanosheets with molecular Re and Mo complexes. A suite of characterization techniques, including infrared, X-ray photoelectron and X-ray absorption spectroscopy as well as scanning transmission electron microscopy corroborate that the functionalized nanosheets contain a high density of discrete metal centers directly bound to the bP surface. Moreover, the supported metal centers are chemically accessible and can undergo ligand exchange transformations without detaching from the surface. The steric and electronic properties of bP as a ligand are estimated with respect to molecular phosphines. Sterically, bP resembles tri(tolyl)phosphine when monodentate to a metal center, and bis(diphenylphosphino)propane when bidentate, whereas electronically bP is a σ-donor as strong as a trialkyl phosphine. This work is foundational in elucidating the nature of black phosphorus as a ligand and underscores the viability of using bP as a basis for single-site catalysts.

Covalent Functionalization of Black Phosphorus Nanosheets with Dichlorocarbenes for Enhanced Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Two-dimensional black phosphorus (BP) has emerged as a perspective material for various micro- and opto-electronic, energy, catalytic, and biomedical applications. Chemical functionalization of black phosphorus nanosheets (BPNS) is an important pathway for the preparation of materials with improved ambient stability and enhanced physical properties. Currently, the covalent functionalization of BPNS with highly reactive intermediates, such as carbon-free radicals or nitrenes, has been widely implemented to modify the material's surface. However, it should be noted that this field requires more in-depth research and new developments. Herein, we report for the first time the covalent carbene functionalization of BPNS using dichlorocarbene as a functionalizing agent. The P-C bond formation in the obtained material (BP-CCl₂) has been confirmed by Raman, solid-state ³¹P NMR, IR, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy methods. The BP-CCl₂ nanosheets exhibit an enhanced electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance with an overpotential of 442 mV at -1 mA cm^-2 and a Tafel slope of 120 mV dec^-1, outperforming the pristine BPNS.

In-Situ Electrochemical Exfoliation and Methylation of Black Phosphorus into Functionalized Phosphorene Nanosheets

Two-dimensional black phosphorus (BP) has attracted great attention as a perspective material for various applications. The chemical functionalization of BP is an important pathway for the preparation of materials with improved stability and enhanced intrinsic electronic properties. Currently, most of the methods for BP functionalization with organic substrates require either the use of low-stable precursors of highly reactive intermediates or the use of difficult-to-manufacture and flammable BP intercalates. Herein we report a facile route for simultaneous electrochemical exfoliation and methylation of BP. Conducting the cathodic exfoliation of BP in the presence of iodomethane makes it possible to generate highly active methyl radicals, which readily react with the electrode's surface yielding the functionalized material. The covalent functionalization of BP nanosheets with the P-C bond formation has been proven by various microscopic and spectroscopic methods. The functionalization degree estimated by solid-state ³¹P NMR spectroscopy analysis reached 9.7%.

Enhancing the anti-oxidation stability of vapor-crystallized arsenic crystals via introducing iodine

The oxidation of arsenic restricts its application in high-performance electronic devices and functional materials. Herein, a removable iodine-regulation method was proposed for the first time to enhance the anti-oxidation behavior of arsenic. In a gradient of 500-650 ℃, the introduction of 0.6-5.0 at% iodine into arsenic vapor could regulate an arsenic crystal. The oxygen content on the regulated arsenic crystal surface was lowered below 2.5 at% after exposure to ambient conditions for 96 h, reducing over 90% compared with the control group. The residual iodine barrier, which was mainly in the As-I₂ state, suppressed the long-term oxidation of arsenic. First-principles calculation suggested that the adsorbed I₂ weakened the delocalization of lone-pair electrons and inhibited charge transfer from the arsenic surface. Iodine regulation stabilized arsenic surface, which preferred (003) or (012) facets. Their surface energies were 22.4 meV and 47.6 meV, respectively. The synergistic effect of surface stabilization and I₂ passivation lowered the surface energy and continuously slowed the oxidation of arsenic. Therefore, iodine regulation comprehensively enhanced the anti-oxidation properties of arsenic. Moreover, heating at 200 ℃ left the arsenic surface iodine content below 0.1 at% with little variation in structure. The improved anti-oxidation property of arsenic preserves resources for further advanced applications.

Molecularly Engineered Black Phosphorus Heterostructures with Improved Ambient Stability and Enhanced Charge Carrier Mobility

Overcoming the intrinsic instability and preserving unique electronic properties are key challenges for the practical applications of black phosphorus (BP) under ambient conditions. Here, it is demonstrated that molecular heterostructures of BP and hexaazatriphenylene derivatives (BP/HATs) enable improved environmental stability and charge transport properties. The strong interfacial coupling and charge transfer between the HATs and the BP lattice decrease the surface electron density and protect BP sheets from oxidation, resulting in an excellent ambient lifetime of up to 21 d. Importantly, HATs increase the charge scattering time of BP, contributing to an improved carrier mobility of 97 cm² V^-1 s^-1 , almost three times of the pristine BP films, based on noninvasive THz spectroscopic studies. The film mobility is an order of magnitude larger than previously reported values in exfoliated 2D materials. The strategy opens up new avenues for versatile applications of BP sheets and provides an effective method for tuning the physicochemical properties of other air-sensitive 2D semiconductors.

A sensitive electrochemical immunosensing interface for label-free detection of aflatoxin B1 by attachment of nanobody to MWCNTs-COOH@black phosphorene

A label-free electrochemical immunosensor has advantages of real-time and rapid detection, but it is weak in detection of small molecular toxins such as aflatoxin B₁ (AFB₁). The greatest obstacle to achieving this is that small molecules bound to a common immunosensing interface cannot interfere with electron transfer effectively and the detection signal is so weak. Therefore, a sensitive electrochemical immunosensing interface for small molecules is urgently needed. Here, we employed functionalized black phosphorene (BP) as electrode modification materials and anti-AFB₁ nanobody (Nb) as a biorecognition element to construct a very sensitive immunosensing interface towards small molecular AFB₁. The BP functionalized by carboxylic multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs-COOH) via P-C bonding behaved with a satisfactory stability and good catalytic performance for the ferricyanide/ferrocyanide probe, while the small-sized Nb showed good compatibility with the functionalized BP and also had less influence on electron transfer than monoclonal antibody (mAb). Expectedly, the as-prepared immunosensing interface was very sensitive to AFB₁ detection by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) in a redox probe system. Under optimized conditions, a linear range from 1.0 pM to 5.0 nM and an ultralow detection limit of 0.27 pM were obtained. Additionally, the fabricated immunosensor exhibited satisfactory stability, specificity, and reproducibility. The strategy proposed here provides a more reliable reference for label-free sensing of small molecules in food samples.

Interlayer Coordination of Pd-Pd Units in Exfoliated Black Phosphorus

The chemical functionalization of 2D exfoliated black phosphorus (2D BP) continues to attract great interest, although a satisfactory structural characterization of the functionalized material has seldom been achieved. Herein, we provide the first complete structural characterization of 2D BP functionalized with rare discrete Pd₂ units, obtained through a mild decomposition of the organometallic dimeric precursor [Pd(η³-C₃H₅)Cl]₂. A multitechnique approach, including HAADF-STEM, solid-state NMR, XPS, and XAS, was used to study in detail the morphology of the palladated nanosheets (Pd₂/BP) and to unravel the coordination of Pd₂ units to phosphorus atoms of 2D BP. In particular, XAS, backed up by DFT modeling, revealed the existence of unprecedented interlayer Pd–Pd units, sandwiched between stacked BP layers. The preliminary application of Pd₂/BP as a catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in acidic medium highlighted an activity increase due to the presence of Pd₂ units.

Azido-Functionalized Aromatic Phosphonate Esters in RPOSS-Cage-Supported Lanthanide Ion (Ln = La, Nd, Dy, Er) Coordination

Within this work, a modified preparation of diethyl 4-azidobenzylphosphonate (L1) is presented and the family of 4- or 4'-azido-substituted aromatic phosphonate esters is increased by three new ligand platforms: diisopropyl 4-azidobenzylphosphonate (L2), diisopropyl ((4'-azido-[1,1'-biphenyl]-4-yl)methyl)phosphonate (L3), and diisopropyl 4-azido-2,3,5,6-tetrafluorobenzylphosphonate (L4), which exhibit an anomalous splitting of the N₃ stretching vibrations. Subsequent coordination to the in situ generated ^RPOSS (polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane)-cage-supported lanthanide precursors [(Ln{^RPOSS})₂(THF)_m] (P1-P6) (Ln = La, Nd, Dy, Er; R = iBu, Ph; m = 0, 1) yields complexes of the general formula [Ln{^RPOSS}(L1-L4)_n(S1)_x(THF)_m] (1-30) (n = 2, 3; x = 0, 1; m = 0-2) retaining the azide unit for future semiconductor surface immobilization. Because the latter compounds are mostly oils or viscous waxes, preliminary solution-state structure elucidations via DOSY-ECC-MW estimations have been carried out which are in accordance with ¹H NMR integral ratios as well as solid-state structures, where available. Moreover, the optical properties of the Nd, Dy, and Er derivatives of complexes 1-30 are examined in the visible and NIR spectral regions, where applicable.
