Colloidal Metal Nanocrystals with Metastable Crystal Structures

Elucidating the Role of Reduction Kinetics in the Phase-Controlled Growth on Preformed Nanocrystal Seeds: A Case Study of Ru

This study demonstrates the crucial role of reduction kinetics in phase-controlled synthesis of noble-metal nanocrystals using Ru nanocrystals as a case study. We found that the reduction kinetics played a more important role than the templating effect from the preformed seed in dictating the crystal structure of the deposited overlayers despite their intertwined effects on successful epitaxial growth. By employing two different polyols, a series of Ru nanocrystals with tunable sizes of 3-7 nm and distinct patterns of crystal phase were synthesized by incorporating different types of Ru seeds. Notably, the use of ethylene glycol and triethylene glycol consistently resulted in the formation of Ru shell in natural hexagonal close-packed (hcp) and metastable face-centered cubic (fcc) phases, respectively, regardless of the size and phase of the seed. Quantitative measurements and theoretical calculations suggested that this trend was a manifestation of the different reduction kinetics associated with the precursor and the chosen polyol, which, in turn, affected the reduction pathway (solution versus surface) and packing sequence of the deposited Ru atoms. This work not only underscores the essential role of reduction kinetics in controlling the packing of atoms and thus the phase taken by Ru nanocrystals but also suggests a potential extension to other noble-metal systems.

Recent Progress on Phase Engineering of Nanomaterials

As a key structural parameter, phase depicts the arrangement of atoms in materials. Normally, a nanomaterial exists in its thermodynamically stable crystal phase. With the development of nanotechnology, nanomaterials with unconventional crystal phases, which rarely exist in their bulk counterparts, or amorphous phase have been prepared using carefully controlled reaction conditions. Together these methods are beginning to enable phase engineering of nanomaterials (PEN), i.e., the synthesis of nanomaterials with unconventional phases and the transformation between different phases, to obtain desired properties and functions. This Review summarizes the research progress in the field of PEN. First, we present representative strategies for the direct synthesis of unconventional phases and modulation of phase transformation in diverse kinds of nanomaterials. We cover the synthesis of nanomaterials ranging from metal nanostructures such as Au, Ag, Cu, Pd, and Ru, and their alloys; metal oxides, borides, and carbides; to transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) and 2D layered materials. We review synthesis and growth methods ranging from wet-chemical reduction and seed-mediated epitaxial growth to chemical vapor deposition (CVD), high pressure phase transformation, and electron and ion-beam irradiation. After that, we summarize the significant influence of phase on the various properties of unconventional-phase nanomaterials. We also discuss the potential applications of the developed unconventional-phase nanomaterials in different areas including catalysis, electrochemical energy storage (batteries and supercapacitors), solar cells, optoelectronics, and sensing. Finally, we discuss existing challenges and future research directions in PEN.

Strain and Surface Engineering of Multicomponent Metallic Nanomaterials with Unconventional Phases

Multicomponent metallic nanomaterials with unconventional phases show great prospects in electrochemical energy storage and conversion, owing to unique crystal structures and abundant structural effects. In this review, we emphasize the progress in the strain and surface engineering of these novel nanomaterials. We start with a brief introduction of the structural configurations of these materials, based on the interaction types between the components. Next, the fundamentals of strain, strain effect in relevant metallic nanomaterials with unconventional phases, and their formation mechanisms are discussed. Then the progress in surface engineering of these multicomponent metallic nanomaterials is demonstrated from the aspects of morphology control, crystallinity control, surface modification, and surface reconstruction. Moreover, the applications of the strain- and surface-engineered unconventional nanomaterials mainly in electrocatalysis are also introduced, where in addition to the catalytic performance, the structure-performance correlations are highlighted. Finally, the challenges and opportunities in this promising field are prospected.

Coherent hexagonal platinum skin on nickel nanocrystals for enhanced hydrogen evolution activity

Metastable noble metal nanocrystals may exhibit distinctive catalytic properties to address the sluggish kinetics of many important processes, including the hydrogen evolution reaction under alkaline conditions for water-electrolysis hydrogen production. However, the exploration of metastable noble metal nanocrystals is still in its infancy and suffers from a lack of sufficient synthesis and electronic engineering strategies to fully stimulate their potential in catalysis. In this paper, we report a synthesis of metastable hexagonal Pt nanostructures by coherent growth on 3d transition metal nanocrystals such as Ni without involving galvanic replacement reaction, which expands the frontier of the phase-replication synthesis. Unlike noble metal substrates, the 3d transition metal substrate owns more crystal phases and lower cost and endows the hexagonal Pt skin with substantial compressive strains and programmable charge density, making the electronic properties particularly preferred for the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction. The energy barriers are greatly reduced, pushing the activity to 133 mA cm_geo^-2 and 17.4 mA μg_Pt^-1 at -70 mV with 1.5 µg of Pt in 1 M KOH. Our strategy paves the way for metastable noble metal catalysts with tailored electronic properties for highly efficient and cost-effective energy conversion.

Homogeneous Metastable Hexagonal Phase Iridium Enhances Hydrogen Evolution Catalysis

Catalytic reactions are surface-sensitive processes. Fabrication of homogeneous metastable metals can be used to promote phase-dependent catalytic performance; however, this has been a challenging task. Herein, homogeneous metastable hexagonal close-packed (hcp) Ir is epitaxially grown onto metastable phase hcp Ni, as demonstrated using spherical aberration electron microscopy. The as-fabricated metastable hcp Ir exhibits high intrinsic activity for the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In particular, metastable hcp Ir delivers a low overpotential of 17 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 and presents a high specific activity of 8.55 mA cm^-2 and a high turnover frequency of 38.26 s^-1 at -0.07 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode. Owing to its epitaxially grown structure, metastable hcp Ir is highly stable. Theoretical calculations reveal that metastable hcp Ir promotes H₂ O adsorption and fast H₂ O dissociation, which contributes to its remarkable HER activity. Findings can elucidate the crystal phase-controlled synthesis of advanced noble metal nanomaterials for the fundamental catalytic applications.

Colloidal Synthesis of Metal Nanocrystals: From Asymmetrical Growth to Symmetry Breaking

Nanocrystals offer a unique platform for tailoring the physicochemical properties of solid materials to enhance their performances in various applications. While most work on controlling their shapes revolves around symmetrical growth, the introduction of asymmetrical growth and thus symmetry breaking has also emerged as a powerful route to enrich metal nanocrystals with new shapes and complex morphologies as well as unprecedented properties and functionalities. The success of this route critically relies on our ability to lift the confinement on symmetry by the underlying unit cell of the crystal structure and/or the initial seed in a systematic manner. This Review aims to provide an account of recent progress in understanding and controlling asymmetrical growth and symmetry breaking in a colloidal synthesis of noble-metal nanocrystals. With a touch on both the nucleation and growth steps, we discuss a number of methods capable of generating seeds with diverse symmetry while achieving asymmetrical growth for mono-, bi-, and multimetallic systems. We then showcase a variety of symmetry-broken nanocrystals that have been reported, together with insights into their growth mechanisms. We also highlight their properties and applications and conclude with perspectives on future directions in developing this class of nanomaterials. It is hoped that the concepts and existing challenges outlined in this Review will drive further research into understanding and controlling the symmetry breaking process.

Revealing Surface Restraint-Induced Hexagonal Pd Nanocrystals via In Situ Transmission Electron Microscopy

Achieving metal nanocrystals with metastable phase draws much attention due to their anticipated fascinating properties, wheras it is still challenging because their polymorphism nature and phase transition mechanism remain elusive. Here, phase stability of face-centered cubic (fcc) Pd nanocrystals was studied via in situ spherical aberration (Cs)-corrected transmission electron microscopy (TEM). By constructing a well-defined Pd/C composite structure, Pd nanocrystals encapsulated by graphite, the dispersion process of fcc Pd was observed through a nucleation and growth process. Interestingly, Cs-corrected scanning TEM analysis demonstrated that the newly formed Pd nanocrystals could adopt a metastable hexagonal phase, which was considered challenging to obtain. Accordingly, formation mechanism of the hexagonal Pd nanocrystals was proposed, which involved the combined effect of two factors: (1) templating of graphite and (2) size effect. This work is expected to offer new insight into the polymorphism of Pd nanocrystals and pave the way for the future design of metastable metal nanomaterials.

Phase-Controlled Synthesis of Ru Nanocrystals via Template-Directed Growth: Surface Energy versus Bulk Energy

Despite the successful control of crystal phase using template-directed growth, much remains unknown about the underlying mechanisms. Here, we demonstrate that the crystal phase taken by the deposited metal depends on the lateral size of face-centered cubic (fcc)-Pd nanoplate templates with 12 nm plates giving fcc-Ru while 18-26 nm plates result in hexagonal closed-packed (hcp)-Ru. Although Ru overlayers with a metastable fcc- (high in bulk energy) or stable hcp-phase (low in bulk energy) can be epitaxially deposited on the basal planes, the lattice mismatch will lead to jagged hcp- (high in surface energy) and smooth fcc-facets (low in surface energy), respectively, on the side faces. As the proportion of basal and side faces on the nanoplates varies with lateral size, the crystal phase will change depending on the relative contributions from the surface and bulk energies. The Pd@fcc-Ru outperforms the Pd@hcp-Ru nanoplates toward ethylene glycol and glycerol oxidation reactions.

Facile Synthesis of Palladium-Based Nanocrystals with Different Crystal Phases and a Comparison of Their Catalytic Properties

A relatively unexplored aspect of noble-metal nanomaterials is polymorphism, or their ability to crystallize in different crystal phases. Here, a method is reported for the facile synthesis of Ru@Pd core-shell nanocrystals featuring polymorphism, with the core made of hexagonally close-packed (hcp)-Ru while the Pd shell takes either an hcp or face-centered cubic (fcc) phase. The polymorphism shows a dependence on the shell thickness, with shells thinner than ≈1.4 nm taking the hcp phase whereas the thicker ones revert to fcc. The injection rate provides an experimental knob for controlling the phase, with one-shot and drop-wise injection of the Pd precursor corresponding to fcc-Pd and hcp-Pd shells, respectively. When these nanocrystals are tested as catalysts toward formic acid oxidation, the Ru@Pd_hcp nanocrystals outperform Ru@Pd_fcc in terms of both specific activity and peak potential. Density functional theory calculations are also performed to elucidate the origin of this performance enhancement.

General Route to Colloidal Nanocrystal Clusters with Precise Hierarchical Control via Star-like Nanoreactors

A colloidal nanocrystal cluster (CNC) is a hierarchical nanostructure formed by clustering several nanocrystals into one nano-ensemble, which may exhibit unique optical or catalytic properties different from individual nanocrystals owing to the mutual interactions among neighboring component nanocrystals. However, there is still no universal synthetic route that could be applicable to diverse material compositions with precisely controlled hierarchical structures (i.e., nanocrystal number density, component nanocrystal size, and overall diameter of the CNC) up to now. Herein, a general and novel synthetic strategy was reported for crafting a wide range of inorganic CNCs (i.e., noble metal, semiconductor, and metal oxide) via utilizing amphiphilic star-like poly(4-vinylpyridine)-block-polystyrene diblock copolymers as nanoreactors prepared by sequential atom transfer radical polymerization. The hierarchical structure of rationally designed CNCs could be readily tailored by varying the P4VP molecular weight of star-like nanoreactors and the parameter optimization during the CNC preparation process, which was inaccessible by conventional synthetic methods.

Catalytic CO Oxidation and H2O2 Direct Synthesis over Pd and Pt-Impregnated Titania Nanotubes

Titania nanotubes (TNTs) impregnated with Pd and Pt nanoparticles are evaluated as heterogeneous catalysts in different conditions in two reactions: catalytic CO oxidation (gas phase, up to 500 °C) and H2O2 direct synthesis (liquid phase, 30 °C). The TNTs are obtained via oxidation of titanium metal and the intermediate layer-type sodium titanate Na2Ti3O7. Thereafter, the titanate layers are exfoliated and show self-rolling to TNTs, which, finally, are impregnated with Pd or Pt nanoparticles at room temperature by using Pd(ac)2 and Pt(ac)2. The resulting crystalline Pd/TNTs and Pt/TNTs are realized with different lengths (long TNTs: 2.0–2.5 µm, short TNTs: 0.23–0.27 µm) and a specific surface area up to 390 m2/g. The deposited Pd and Pt particles are 2–5 nm in diameter. The TNT-derived catalysts show good thermal (up to 500 °C) and chemical stability (in liquid-phase and gas-phase reactions). The catalytic evaluation results in a low CO oxidation light-out temperature of 150 °C for Pt/TNTs (1 wt-%) and promising H2O2 generation with a productivity of 3240 molH2O2 kgPd−1 h−1 (Pd/TNTs, 5 wt-%, 30 °C). Despite their smaller surface area, long TNTs outperform short TNTs with regard to both CO oxidation and H2O2 formation.

Crystal Structure of Colloidally Prepared Metastable Ag2Se Nanocrystals

Structural polymorphism is known for many bulk materials; however, on the nanoscale metastable polymorphs tend to form more readily than in the bulk, and with more structural variety. One such metastable polymorph observed for colloidal Ag₂Se nanocrystals has traditionally been referred to as the "tetragonal" phase. While there are reports on the chemistry and properties of this metastable polymorph, its crystal structure, and therefore electronic structure, has yet to be determined. We report that an anti-PbCl₂-like structure type (space group P2₁/n) more accurately describes the powder X-ray diffraction and X-ray total scattering patterns of colloidal Ag₂Se nanocrystals prepared by several different methods. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that this anti-PbCl₂-like Ag₂Se polymorph is a dynamically stable, narrow-band-gap semiconductor. The anti-PbCl₂-like structure of Ag₂Se is a low-lying metastable polymorph at 5-25 meV/atom above the ground state, depending on the exchange-correlation functional used.
