Fused Quinoidal Dithiophene-Based Helicenes: Synthesis by Intramolecular Radical-Radical Coupling Reactions and Dynamics of Interconversion of Enantiomers

Thiopyran-Fused Mono and Double Helicenes with Low Band Gaps via Simultaneous Ring Expansion and 6-endo Cyclizations

Mono and double helicenes (M5, M6, D5, and D6) containing six-membered thiopyran rings have been successfully prepared via simultaneous ring expansion and 6-endo cycloisomerizations from the corresponding precursors with five-membered thiophene rings. Although D5 and D6 exhibit similar chemical structures, they demonstrate completely different helical structures because of their distinct steric clashes caused by the incorporated methyl groups. Moreover, all of the thiopyran-fused helicenes exhibit broad absorption bands covering the visible and near-infrared regions.

S-Shaped Helical Singlet Diradicaloid and Its Transformation to Circumchrysene via a Two-Stage Cyclization

Polycyclic hydrocarbons with diradical and polyradical characters usually display unique reactivities in ring-cyclization reactions. However, such reactions are rarely used to construct π-extended polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Here, we describe the synthesis of an S-shaped doubly helical singlet diradicaloid compound and its facile transformation into an unprecedented circumchrysene via a two-stage ring cyclization, which includes: (1) an eletrocylization from diradicaloid precursor and (2) a Scholl reaction. The reaction mechanism was investigated through in situ spectroscopic studies, assisted by theoretical calculations. This reaction sequence yields an optically resolved π-extended [5]helicene derivative with a fluorescence quantum yield up to 85% and a circularly polarized luminescence brightness up to 6.05 M-1 cm-1 in the far-red to near-infrared regions. This sequence also yielded a highly delocalized circumchrysene molecule, exhibiting large electron delocalization, moderate fluorescence quantum yield, and multistage redox properties.

Bis-peri-dinaphtho-rylenes: Facile Synthesis via Radical-Mediated Coupling Reactions and their Distinctive Electronic Structures

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with a one-dimensional (1D), ribbon-like structure have the potential to serve as both model compounds for corresponding graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) and as materials for optoelectronics applications. However, synthesizing molecules of this type with extended π-conjugation presents a significant challenge. In this study, we present a straightforward synthetic method for a series of bis-peri-dinaphtho-rylene molecules, wherein the peri-positions of perylene, quaterrylene, and hexarylene are fused with naphtho-units. These molecules were efficiently synthesized primarily through intramolecular or intermolecular radical coupling of in situ generated organic radical species. Their structures were confirmed using X-ray crystallographic analysis, which also revealed a slightly bent geometry due to the incorporation of a cyclopentadiene ring at the bay regions of the rylene backbones. Bond lengh analysis and theoretical calculations indicate that their electronic structures resemble pyrenacenes more than quinoidal rylenes. That is, the aromatic sextets are predominantly localized along the long axis of the skeletones. As the chain length increases, these molecules exhibit enhanced electronic absorption with a bathochromic shift, and multiple amphoteric redox waves. This study introduces a novel synthetic approach for generating 1D extended PAHs and GNRs, along with their structure-dependent electronic properties.

Functionalization of Pentacene: A Facile and Versatile Approach to Contorted Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons

In this work, a facile and versatile strategy for the synthesis of contorted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) starting from the functionalized pentacene was established. A series of novel PAHs 1-4 and their derivatives were synthesized through a simple two-step synthesis procedure involving an intramolecular reductive Friedel-Crafts cyclization of four newly synthesized pentacene aldehydes 5-8 as a key step. All the molecules were confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and their photophysical and electrochemical properties were studied in detail. Interestingly, the most striking feature of 1-4 is their highly contorted carbon structures and the accompanying helical chirality. In particular, the optical resolution of 2 was successfully achieved by chiral-phase HPLC, and the enantiomers were characterized by circular dichroism and circularly polarized luminescence spectroscopy. Despite the highly nonplanar conformations, these contorted PAHs exhibited emissive properties with moderate-to-good fluorescence quantum yields, implying the potential utility of this series PAHs as high-quality organic laser dyes. By using a self-assembly method with the help of epoxy resin, a bottle microlaser based on 3 a was successfully illustrated with a lasing wavelength of 567.8 nm at a threshold of 0.3 mJ/cm2 . We believe that this work will shed light on the chemical versatility of pentacene and its derivatives in the construction of novel functionalized PAHs.

Dinor[7]helicene and Beyond: Divergent Synthesis of Chiral Diradicaloids with Variable Open-Shell Character

Diradicaloid helicenes constructed formally by non-benzenoid double π-extension of phenanthrene were synthesized by a common strategy involving double electrophilic benzannulation. Steric effects in the second benzannulation step led to considerable structural diversity among the products, yielding a symmetrical dinor[7]helicene 1 and two isomeric unsymmetrical double helicenes 2 and 3, containing a nor[5]helicene and [4]helicene fragment, respectively, in addition to a common nor[6]helicene motif. Geometries, configurational dynamics, and electronic structure of these helicenes were analyzed using solid-state structures, spectroscopic methods, and computational analyses. The open-shell character of the singlet states of these helicenes increases in the order 3<1<2, with strongly varying diradicaloid indexes and singlet-triplet gaps. Compounds 1-3 displayed narrow optical gaps of 0.79-1.25 eV, resulting in significant absorption in the near infrared (NIR) region. They also exhibit reversible redox chemistry, each of them yielding stable radical cations, radical anions, and dianions, in some cases possessing intense NIR absorptions extending beyond 2500 nm.

Recent Research Progress in Indophenine-Based-Functional Materials: Design, Synthesis, and Optoelectronic Applications

This review highlights selected examples, published in the last three to four years, of recent advance in the design, synthesis, properties, and device performance of quinoidal π-conjugated materials. A particular emphasis is placed on emerging materials, such as indophenine dyes that have the potential to enable high-performance devices. We specifically discuss the recent advances and design guidelines of π-conjugated quinoidal molecules from a chemical standpoint. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this review is the first compilation of literature on indophenine-based semiconducting materials covering their scope, limitations, and applications. In the first section, we briefly introduce some of the organic electronic devices that are the basic building blocks for certain applications involving organic semiconductors (OSCs). We introduce the definition of key performance parameters of three organic devices: organic field effect transistors (OFET), organic photovoltaics (OPV), and organic thermoelectric generators (TE). In section two, we review recent progress towards the synthesis of quinoidal semiconducting materials. Our focus will be on indophenine family that has never been reviewed. We discuss the relationship between structural properties and energy levels in this family of molecules. The last section reports the effect of structural modifications on the performance of devices: OFET, OPV and TE. In this review, we provide a general insight into the association between the molecular structure and electronic properties in quinoidal materials, encompassing both small molecules and polymers. We also believe that this review offers benefits to the organic electronics and photovoltaic communities, by shedding light on current trends in the synthesis and progression of promising novel building blocks. This can provide guidance for synthesizing new generations of quinoidal or diradical materials with tunable optoelectronic properties and more outstanding charge carrier mobility.

Redox Active cAAC-Fluorene/Indene Systems Displaying Solvatochromism, Green Luminescence and pH Sensing: Functionalization of Fluorenyl/Indenyl Rings with Radical Carbene

Two new series of air stable compounds of cAAC^X = fluorene/indene (X = Me₂ , Et₂ , Cy) [cAAC = cyclic (alkyl) amino carbene] have been isolated and well characterized by X-ray single crystal diffraction, photoluminescence, cyclic voltammogram (CV) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) studies. Fluorescence studies reveals green light emission of cAAC bonded fluorene, whereas free fluorene generally displays a violet emission. Interestingly, the sterically crowded cAAC-fluorene analogue display solvatochromism and CF₃ CO₂ H sensing in solution. CV of the these compounds show a quasi-reversible electron transfer process, indicating the functionalization of fluorene/indene with radical anionic form of carbene, confirmed by CV/EPR measurements. DFT/TDDFT calculations and energy decomposition analysis coupled with natural orbital for chemical valence (EDA-NOCV) have been carried out to study different aspects of bonding and electronic transitions. Such a class of redox active and thermally stable organic molecules may be suitable for molecule based spin memory devices in future.

[5]-Helistatins: Tubulin-Binding Helicenes with Antimitotic Activity

Helicenes are high interest synthetic targets with unique conjugated helical structures that have found important technological applications. Despite this interest, helicenes have had limited impact in chemical biology. Herein, we disclose a first-in-class antimitotic helicene, helistatin 1 (HA-1), where the helicene scaffold acts as a structural mimic of colchicine, a known antimitotic drug. The synthesis proceeds via sequential Pd-catalyzed coupling reactions and a π-Lewis acid cycloisomerization mediated by PtCl₂. HA-1 was found to block microtubule polymerization in both cell-free and live cell assays. Not only does this demonstrate the feasibility of using helicenes as bioactive scaffolds against protein targets, but also suggests wider potential for the use of helicenes as isosteres of biaryls or cis-stilbenes-themselves common drug and natural product scaffolds. Overall, this study further supports future opportunities for helicenes for a range of chemical biological applications.

Synthesis of Nitrogen-Doped Aza-Helicenes with Chiral Optical Properties

Aza-helicenes are one of the most important series of heterohelicenes; herein, a series of novel aza-helicenes (5H, 6H, 6S, and 8S) were prepared via Bischler-Napieralski cyclization, and the interconversion dynamic process of these aza-helicenes was revealed using density functional theory calculations. The novel nitrogen-doped [6]helicene (6H) possesses a very high interconversion energy barrier of 36.0 kcal/mol. Two enantiomers of 6H were successfully resolved by high-performance liquid chromatography and showed desired chiral optical properties. 6H with chiral optical activity and lone electrons can be a potential candidate for chiral switches, which was demonstrated using the UV and circular dichroism spectra obtained upon titration with an acid and a base.

Benzo-Extended Cyclohepta[def]fluorene Derivatives with Very Low-Lying Triplet States

Open-shell non-alternant polycyclic hydrocarbons (PHs) are attracting increasing attention due to their promising applications in organic spintronics and quantum computing. Herein we report the synthesis of three cyclohepta[def]fluorene-based diradicaloids (1-3), by fusion of benzo rings on its periphery for the thermodynamic stabilization, as evidenced by multiple characterization techniques. Remarkably, all of them display a very narrow optical energy gap (E_g ^opt =0.52-0.69 eV) and persistent stability under ambient conditions (t_1/2 =11.7-33.3 h). More importantly, this new type of diradicaloids possess a low-lying triplet state with an extremely small singlet-triplet energy gap, as low as 0.002 kcal mol^-1 , with a clear dependence on the molecular size. This family of compounds thus offers a new route to create non-alternant open-shell PHs with high-spin ground states, and opens up novel possibilities and insights into understanding the structure-property relationships.

Synthesis of π-Extended Thiele’s and Chichibabin’s Hydrocarbons and Effect of the π-Congestion on Conformations and Electronic States

The biradicaloid of Chichibabin’s hydrocarbon exits in a unique thermal equilibrium between closed-shell singlet and open-shell triplet forms. Conceptually, the incorporation of nonplanar aromatic groups, such as anthraquinodimethane (AQD), in these species could bring about stabilization of the individual singlet and triplet spin biradicaloids by creating a high energy barrier for conformational interconversion between folded (singlet) and twisted (triplet) forms. Moreover, this alteration could introduce the possibility of controlling spin states through conformational changes induced by chemical and physical processes. Herein, we report the preparation of AQD-containing, π-extended Thiele’s (A-TH) and Chichibabin’s (A-CH) hydrocarbons, which have highly π-congested structures resulting from the presence of bulky 9-anthryl units. The π-congestion in these substances leads to steric frustration about carbon–carbon double bonds and creates flexible dynamic motion with a moderate activation barrier between folded singlet and twisted triplet states. These constraints make it possible to isolate the twisted triplet state of A-CH. In addition, simple mechanical grinding of the folded singlet of A-CH produces the twisted triplet.

Facile Synthesis of Azahelicenes and Diaza[8]circulenes through the Intramolecular Scholl Reaction

Carbazole-based aza[7]helicenes and hetero[9]helicenes were successfully obtained via the intramolecular Scholl reaction of 3,6-bis(biphenyl-2-yl)carbazole congeners, while the reaction of 3,6-bis(naphthylphenyl)-appended carbazole gave a triple helicene via an unexpected simultaneous double aryl rearrangement. DFT calculations suggested that the rearrangement proceeded via an arenium cation intermediate. In addition, the reaction of methoxy-appended substrate gave an azahepta[8]circulene via the concurrent C-C bond formation. These helical dyes showed circularly polarized luminescence. The azahepta[8]circulene was further transformed into deeply saddle-distorted dibenzodiaza[8]circulenes as the first example of its solution-based synthesis and unambiguous structural determination.
