Photocatalytic Upgrading of Lignin Oil to Diesel Precursors and Hydrogen

Zinc-indium-sulfide favors efficient C - H bond activation by concerted proton-coupled electron transfer

C - H bond activation is a ubiquitous reaction that remains a major challenge in chemistry. Although semiconductor-based photocatalysis is promising, the C - H bond activation mechanism remains elusive. Herein, we report value-added coupling products from a wide variety of biomass and fossil-derived reagents, formed via C - H bond activation over zinc-indium-sulfides (Zn-In-S). Contrary to the commonly accepted stepwise electron-proton transfer pathway (PE-ET) for semiconductors, our experimental and theoretical studies evidence a concerted proton-coupled electron transfer (CPET) pathway. A pioneering microkinetic study, considering the relevant elementary steps of the surface chemistry, reveals a faster C - H activation with Zn-In-S because of circumventing formation of a charged radical, as it happens in PE-ET where it retards the catalysis due to strong site adsorption. For CPET over Zn-In-S, H abstraction, forming a neutral radical, is rate-limiting, but having lower energy barriers than that of PE-ET. The rate expressions derived from the microkinetics provide guidelines to rationally design semiconductor catalysis, e.g., for C - H activation, that is based on the CPET mechanism.

Production of Renewable Hydrocarbon Biofuels with Lignocellulose and Its Derivatives over Heterogeneous Catalysts

In recent years, the issues of global warming and CO2 emission reduction have garnered increasing global attention. In the 21st Conference of the Parties (convened in Paris in 2015), 179 nations and the European Union signed a pivotal agreement to limit the global temperature increase of this century to well below 2 K above preindustrial levels. To fulfill this objective, extensive research has been conducted to use renewable energy sources as potential replacements for traditional fossil fuels. Among them, the production of hydrocarbon transportation fuels from CO2-neutral and renewable biomass has proven to be a particularly promising solution due to its compatibility with existing infrastructure. This review systematically summarizes research progress in the synthesis of liquid hydrocarbon biofuels from lignocellulose during the past two decades. Based on the chemical structure (including n-paraffins, iso-paraffins, aromatics, and cycloalkanes) of hydrocarbon transportation fuels, the synthesis pathways of these biofuels are discussed in four separate sections. Furthermore, this review proposes three guiding principles for the design of practical hydrocarbon biofuels, providing insights into future directions for the development of viable biomass-derived liquid fuels.

CsPbBr3 Quantum Dots Promoted Depolymerization of Oxidized Lignin via Photocatalytic Semi-Hydrogenation/Reduction Strategy

Due to the demanding depolymerization conditions and limited catalytic efficiency, enhancing lignin valorization remains challenging. Therefore, lowering the bond dissociation energy (BDE) has emerged as a viable strategy for achieving mild yet highly effective cleavage of bonds. In this study, a photocatalytic semi-hydrogenation/reduction strategy utilizing CsPbBr3 quantum dots (CPB-QDs) and Hantzsch ester (HEH2 ) as a synergistic catalytic system was introduced to reduce the BDE of Cβ -O-Ar, achieving effective cleavage of the Cβ -O-Ar bond. This strategy offers a wide substrate scope encompassing various β-O-4 model lignin dimers, preoxidized β-O-4 polymers, and native oxidized lignin, resulting in the production of corresponding ketones and phenols. Notably, this approach attained a turnover frequency (TOF) that is 17 times higher than that of the reported Ir-catalytic system in the photocatalytic depolymerization of the lignin model dimers. It has been observed via meticulous experimentation that HEH2 can be activated by CPB-QDs via single electron transfer (SET), generating HEH2 ⋅+ as a hydrogen donor while also serving as a hole quencher. Moreover, HEH2 ⋅+ readily forms an active transition state with the substrates via hydrogen bonding. Subsequently, the proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) from HEH2 ⋅+ to the carbonyl group of the substrate generates a Cα ⋅ intermediate.

The ionic liquids upon perchlorate to promote the C-C/C-O bonds cleavage in alkali lignin under photothermal synergism

Transforming lignin into aromatic monomers is critically attractive to develop green and sustainable energy supplies. However, the usage of the additional catalysts like metal or base/acid is commonly limited by the caused repolymerized and environmental issues. The key step is to mediate electron transfer in lignin to trigger lignin C-C/C-O bonds cleavage without the catalysts mentioned above. Here, we report that the ionic liquids [BMim][ClO4] was found to trigger lignin electron transfer to cleave the C-C/C-O bonds for aromatic monomers without any additional catalyst. The proton transfer from [BMim]+ to [ClO4]- could polarize the anion and decrease its structure stability, upon which the active hydroxyl radical generated and induced lignin C-C/C-O bonds fragmentation via free radical-mediated routes with the assistance of photothermal synergism. About 4.4 wt% yields of aromatic monomers, mainly composed of vanillin and acetosyringone, are afforded in [BMim][ClO4] under UV-light irradiation in the air at 80 °C. This work opens the way to produce value-added aromatic monomers from lignin using an eco-friendly, energy-efficient, and simple route that may contribute to the sustainable utilization of renewable natural resources.

Distinct Selectivity Control in Solar-Driven Bio-Based α-Hydroxyl Acid Conversion: A Comparison of Pt Nanoparticles and Atomically Dispersed Pt on CdS

Solar-driven photocatalytic lignocellulose conversion is a promising strategy for the sustainable production of high-value chemicals, but selectivity control remains a challenging goal in this field. Here, we report efficient and selective conversion of lignocellulose-derived α-hydroxyl acids to tartaric acid derivatives, α-keto acids, and H2 using Pt-modified CdS catalysts. Pt nanoparticles on CdS selectively produce tartaric acid derivatives via C-C coupling, while atomically dispersed Pt on CdS switches product selectivity to the oxidation reaction to produce α-keto acids. The atomically dispersed Pt species stabilized by Pt-S bonds promote the activation of the hydroxyl group and thus switch product selectivity from tartaric acid derivatives to α-keto acids. A broad range of lignocellulose-derived α-hydroxyl acids was applied for preparing the corresponding tartaric acid derivatives and α-keto acids over the two Pt-modified CdS catalysts. This work highlights the unique performance of metal sulfides in coupling reactions and demonstrates a strategy for rationally tuning product selectivity by engineering the interaction between metal sulfide and cocatalyst.

Photoinduced Biomimetic Room-Temperature C-O Bond Cleavage over Mn Doped CdS

Selective C-O bond cleavage is an efficient way for the biomass valorization to value-added chemicals, but is challenged to be operated at room temperature via conventional thermal catalysis. Herein, inspired from the DNA biosynthesis which involves a radical-mediated spin-center shift (SCS) C-O bond cleavage process, we report a biomimetic room-temperature C-O bond cleavage of vicinal diol (HOCHCH-OH). We construct a Mn doped CdS (Mn/CdS) as a photocatalyst to mimic the biologic SCS process. The Mn site plays pivotal role: (1) accelerates the photo-induced carrier separation, promoting the hole-mediated C-H bond cleavage to generate carbon-centered radicals, and (2) serves as the binding site for -OH groups, making it to be an easier leaving group. Mn/CdS achieves 0.28 mmol gcat -1  h-1 of hydroxyacetone (HA) from glycerol dehydration at room temperature under visible light irradiation, which is 3.5-fold that over pristine CdS and 40-fold that over bulk MnS/CdS. This study provides a new biomimetic room-temperature C-O bond cleavage process, which is promising for the biomass valorization.

Phase-dependent selectivity control over TiO2 in the photocatalytic oxidation of bio-polyols

Photocatalytic oxidation shows great potential in the valorization of biomass under mild conditions, while the selectivity control is particularly challenging for the complex and reactive bio-polyols. Herein, we report a selective photocatalytic process to convert bio-polyols into formic acid (FA) or carbon monoxide (CO) by controlling the phase of TiO2. The bio-polyols are facially oxidized to formic acid (FA) which is stable over rutile and could be dehydrated to CO over anatase TiO2. Through controlling the phase, FA or CO could be obtained from a wide range of bio-polyols with selectivity up to 63% or 52%. Our studies elucidate that the phase-dependent selectivity is essentially derived from the difference in the adsorption configuration of FA. In situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and density functional (DFT) calculations were used to study the FA decomposition process on the surface of TiO2. The phase-dependent FA decomposition is mainly derived from the different surface geometry, which affects the configuration of FA adsorption. Molecular adsorbed FA on anatase favors the dehydration of FA to CO while bidentate dissociated adsorption of FA on the rutile phase is inert to be further converted. This work provides a new horizon to the design of photocatalytic systems for biomass conversion.

Photoreforming for Lignin Upgrading: A Critical Review

Photoreforming of lignocellulosic biomass to simultaneously produce gas fuels and value-added chemicals has gradually emerged as a promising strategy to alleviate the fossil fuels crisis. Compared to cellulose and hemicellulose, the exploitation and utilization of lignin via photoreforming are still at the early and more exciting stages. This Review systematically summarizes the latest progress on the photoreforming of lignin-derived model components and "real" lignin, aiming to provide insights for lignin photocatalytic valorization from fundamental to industrial applications. Considering the complexity of lignin physicochemical properties, related analytic methods are also introduced to characterize lignin photocatalytic conversion and product distribution. We finally put forward the challenges and perspective of lignin photoreforming, hoping to provide some guidance to valorize biomass into value-added chemicals and fuels via a mild photoreforming process in the future.

Preparation of Ru/N-doped carbon catalysts by induction of different nitrogen source precursors for the hydroprocessing of lignin oil

The lignin oil produced by rapid pyrolysis of lignin is considered a promising liquid fuel source. Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) is a kind of efficient method to upgrade the lignin oil, and a high-performance catalyst is key to the hydrodeoxygenation of lignin oil. In this study, a high dispersion and small size Ru nanoparticle loaded N-doped carbon catalyst was derived by the direct pyrolysis of a mixture of ruthenium trichloride and melamine, and it could efficiently convert lignin oil. The lignin oil was completely transformed at 240 °C and 1 MPa H₂, and 36.58% cyclohexane was obtained. The formation, surface area, and nitrogen species of the catalyst could be controlled by changing the precursor of the nitrogen-doped carbon support. The percentage of pyridine nitrogen possessed with melamine as a nitrogen-carbon precursor (31.35%) was much higher than that with urea (16.47%) and dicyandiamide (8.20%) as nitrogen-carbon precursors. The presence of pyridine nitrogen could not only serve as the coordination site for even dispersity and stability of Ru nanoparticles but also regulated the electron density of Ru nanoparticles (NPs) and increased the active site Ru⁰ through electron transfer.

Integrated Coupling Utilization of the Solar Full Spectrum for Promoting Water Splitting Activity over a CIZS Semiconductor

Most of the existing photocatalysts can only use ultraviolet light and part of visible light, so broadening the spectrum response range and realizing the full spectrum coverage are key measures to improve the solar-to-hydrogen (STH) efficiency of photocatalytic water splitting. A spatially separated photothermal coupled photocatalytic (PTC) reaction system was designed using carbonized melamine foam (C-MF) as a substrate to absorb visible and infrared light and Cu_0.04In_0.25ZnS_y@Ru (CIZS@Ru) as a photocatalyst to absorb UV-visible light (UV-vis). By comparing the three modes of bottom, liquid level, and self-floating, it is found that the surface temperature of the system has a significant effect on the hydrogen evolution activity. The monochromatic light and activation energy experiments verify that the enhancement of photocatalytic activity comes from the strengthened photothermal effect of the substrate. Combined with theoretical calculations, it is further confirmed that the introduction of photothermal materials provides additional kinetic energy for carrier transmission and promotes directional carrier transmission efficiency. Based on the photoenergy-thermal integrated catalytic strategy, the hydrogen production rate reaches 603 mmol h^-1 m^-2. The structural design of photocatalysis has potential application in the field of photoenergy-fuel conversion.

Hydrogen Bonding Promotes Alcohol C-C Coupling

Photocatalytic C-C bond formation coupled with H₂ production provides a sustainable approach to producing carbon-chain-prolonged chemicals and hydrogen energy. However, the involved radical intermediates with open-shell electronic structures are highly reactive, experiencing predominant oxidative or reductive side reactions in semiconductors. Herein, we demonstrate that hydrogen bonding on the catalyst surface and in the bulk solution can inhibit oxidation and reverse reaction of α-hydroxyethyl radicals (αHRs) in photocatalytic dehydrocoupling of ethanol over Au/CdS. Intentionally added water forms surface hydrogen bonds with adsorbed αHRs and strengthens the hydrogen bonding between αHRs and ethanol while maintaining the flexibility of radicals in solution, thereby allowing for αHRs' desorption from the Au/CdS surface and their stabilization by a solvent. The coupling rate of αHR increases by 2.4-fold, and the selectivity of the target product, 2,3-butanediol (BDO), increases from 37 to 57%. This work manifests that nonchemical bonding interactions can steer the reaction paths of radicals for selective photocatalysis.

Technology Overview of Fast Pyrolysis of Lignin: Current State and Potential for Scale-Up

Lignin is an abundant natural polymer obtained from lignocellulosic biomass and rich in aromatic substructures. When efficiently depolymerized, it has great potential in the production of value-added chemicals. Fast pyrolysis is a promising depolymerization method, but current studies focus mainly on small quantities of lignin. In this Review, to determine the potential for upscaling, systems used in the most relevant unit operations of fast pyrolysis of lignin are evaluated. Fluidized-bed reactors have the most potential. It would be beneficial to combine them with the following: slug injectors for feeding, hot particle filters, cyclones, and fractional condensation for product separation and recovery. Moreover, upgrading lignin pyrolysis oil would allow the necessary quality parameters for particular applications to be reached.

Research Progress on the Photo-Driven Catalytic Production of Biodiesel

Biodiesel considered a green, environmentally friendly, and renewable energy source is one of the most promising candidates to replace fossil fuels to supply energy for the world. The conventional thermocatalytic methods have been extensively explored for producing biodiesel, while inevitably encountering some drawbacks, such as harsh operating conditions and high energy consumption. The catalytic production of biodiesel under mild conditions is a research hotspot but with difficulty. Photocatalysis has recently been highlighted as an eco-friendly and energy-saving approach for biodiesel production. This mini-review summarizes typical photocatalysts for biodiesel production and discusses in detail the catalytic mechanism and strategies of the photo-driven (trans)esterification to produce biodiesel. The current challenges and future opportunities of photo-driven catalysis to prepare biodiesel are also outlined, in steps towards guiding the design of advanced photocatalysts for biodiesel production.
