Photoresponsive Palladium and Nickel Catalysts for Ethylene Polymerization and Copolymerization

Terpolymerization of Ethylene with Hexene and Styrene Derivatives by Half-Sandwich Scandium Catalyst

The terpolymerization of ethylene with hexene and styrene derivatives was achieved with a rare earth metal catalyst (C5Me4SiMe3)Sc(CH2C6H4NMe2-o)2 to prepare functional polyethylene. The catalyst system exhibited high activity in the terpolymerization of ethylene with hexene and amine-substituted styrene, affording terpolymers a moderate molecular weight and a unimodal molecular weight distribution. In addition, the comonomer content of the terpolymers can be controlled by changing the feeding ratio of monomers. The aliphatic region of the 13C NMR spectra reveals that the structural units of the comonomers are separately incorporated into the polyethylene backbone. Terpolymers containing styrene derivatives exhibit enhanced tensile strength and significantly improve hydrophilic properties.

Catalyst Editing via Post-Synthetic Functionalization by Phosphonium Generation and Anion Exchange for Nickel-Catalyzed Ethylene/Acrylate Copolymerization

Rapid, efficient development of homogeneous catalysts featuring desired performance is critical to numerous catalytic transformations but remains a key challenge. Typically, this task relies heavily on ligand design that is often based on trial and error. Herein, we demonstrate a "catalyst editing" strategy in Ni-catalyzed ethylene/acrylate copolymerization. Specifically, alkylation of a pendant phosphine followed by anion exchange provides a high yield strategy for a large number of cationic Ni phosphonium catalysts with varying electronic and steric profiles. These catalysts are highly active in ethylene/acrylate copolymerization, and their behaviors are correlated with the electrophile and the anion used in late-stage functionalization.

Dinuclear group IV metal complexes based on a bis(indenyl)-(E/Z)-stilbene platform: a potential prototype of "photoswitchable" catalysts for olefin polymerization

The preparation of dizirconium complexes based on a novel bis(indenyl)-(E/Z)-stilbene platform was explored. Negishi coupling between the in situ-generated diorganozincates obtained from the respective o/m/p-(E/Z)-dibromostilbenes and the bromo-functionalized zirconocene (η5-Cp*)(η5-2-methyl-4-bromoindenyl)ZrCl2, or, alternatively, the preparation of bis(indene)stilbene pro-ligands {o/m/p-(E/Z)-BisIndSB}H2 through Negishi coupling of the corresponding dibromostilbenes with 4-bromoindene and subsequent metallation/transmetallation with Cp*ZrCl3 or Zr(NMe2)4, allowed the preparation of a series of dinuclear complexes. These were analyzed by NMR spectroscopy and some of them by iASAP-mass spectrometry and by X-ray diffraction studies. Experimental results were compared with DFT modelling of the targeted dinuclear complexes evidencing that the (E)-complexes are more stable by 7-11 kcal mol-1 than their (Z)-analogues. Thermal, uncontrolled isomerization of (Z)- to (E)-stilbene platform was observed experimentally for some systems, in the course of their synthesis, either from the (Z)-dibromostilbene reagent or on the dinuclear complexes resulting from the Negishi coupling. Photoisomerization of the (E)- and (Z)-{BisIndSB}H2 proligands and of complexes {o-(E)-BisIndSB}(Zr(NMe2)3)2 and {m-(E)-BisIndSB}(ZrCl2Cp*)2 was investigated under a variety of conditions. It proved effective for the proligands but induced decomposition of the dizirconium complexes. Time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) computations were performed to identify unambiguously the nature of the observed absorption bands and account for decomposition of the complexes. Preliminary ethylene/1-hexene homo- and copolymerization investigations did not evidence putative cooperativity phenomena within these dinuclear systems nor significantly differentiated behavior between the (Z)- and (E)-isomers of a given type of complex under the reaction conditions investigated.

Donor Ability of Bisphosphinemonoxide Ligands Relevant to Late-Metal Olefin Polymerization Catalysis

Late-transition-metal catalysts for polymerization of olefins have drawn a significant amount of attention owing to their ability to tolerate and incorporate polar comonomers. However, a systematic way to experimentally quantify the electronic properties of the ligands used in these systems has not been developed. Quantified ligand parameters will allow for the rational design of tailored polymerization catalysts, which would target specific polymer properties. We report a series of platinum complexes bearing bisphosphinemonoxide ligands, which resemble those used in the polymerization catalysts of Nozaki and Chen. Their electronic properties are investigated experimentally, and trends are rationalized by using computed spectral properties. Benchmarking computational data with known experimental parameters further enhances the utility of both methods for determining optimal ligands for catalytic application.

Photoswitchable Enantioselective and Helix-Sense Controlled Living Polymerization

A pair of enantiomeric photoswitchable PdII catalysts, alkyne-PdII /LR-azo and alkyne-PdII /LS-azo , were prepared via the coordination of alkyne-PdII and azobenzene-modified phosphine ligands LR-azo and LS-azo . Owing to the cis-trans photoisomerization of the azobenzene moiety, alkyne-PdII /LR-azo and alkyne-PdII /LS-azo exhibited different polymerization activities, helix-sense selectivities, and enantioselectivities during the polymerization of isocyanide monomers under irradiation of different wavelength lights. Furthermore, the achiral isocyanide monomer A-1 could be polymerized efficiently using alkyne-PdII /LR-azo under dark condition in a living/controlled manner. Further, it generated single right-handed helical poly-A-1m (LR-azo ), confirmed by the circular dichroism spectra and atomic force microscopy images. However, the polymerization of A-1 almost could not be initiated under 420 nm light in identical conditions of dark condition. Moreover, the photoswitchable catalyst alkyne-PdII /LR-azo exhibited high enantioselectivity for the polymerization of the racemates of L-1 and D-1, respectively. D-1 was polymerized preferentially under dark condition with a D-1/L-1 rate ratio of 70, yielding single right-handed polyisocyanides. Additionally, reversible enantioselectivity was observed under 420 nm light using alkyne-PdII /LR-azo , and the calculated polymerization rate ratio of L-1/D-1 was 57 because of the isomerization of the azobenzene moiety of the catalyst. Furthermore, alkyne-PdII /LS-azo showed opposite enantioselectivity and helix-sense selectivity during the polymerization of the racemates of L-1 and D-1.

Pd(II)-catalyzed coupling of C-H bonds of carboxamides with iodoazobenzenes toward modified azobenzenes

In this paper, we report a synthetic protocol for the construction of biaryl motif-based or π-extended azobenzene and alkylated azobenzene derivatives via the Pd(II)-catalyzed bidentate directing group (DG)-aided C-H activation and functionalization strategy. In the past, the synthesis of biaryl motif-based azobenzenes was accomplished through the traditional cross-coupling reaction involving organometallic reagents and aryl halides or equivalent coupling partners. We have shown the direct coupling of C-H bonds of aromatic/aliphatic carboxamides (possessing a DG) with iodoazobenzenes as the coupling partners through the Pd(II)-catalyzed bidentate DG-aided, site-selective C-H functionalization method. Azobenzene-containing compounds are a versatile class of photo-responsive molecules that have found applications across branches of chemical, biological and materials sciences and are prevalent in medicinally relevant molecules. Accordingly, the synthesis of new and functionalized azobenzene-based scaffolds has been an attractive topic of research. Although the classical methods are efficient, they need pre-functionalized starting materials. This protocol involving the Pd(II)-catalyzed, directing group-aided site-selective C-H arylation of aromatic and aliphatic carboxamides using iodoazobenzene as the coupling partner affording azobenzene-based carboxamides is an additional route and also a contribution towards enriching the library of modified azobenzenes. We have also shown the photoswitching properties of representative compounds synthesized via the Pd(II)-catalyzed directing group-aided site-selective C-H functionalization method.

Unsymmetrical Strategy on α-Diimine Nickel and Palladium Mediated Ethylene (Co)Polymerizations

Among various catalyst design strategies used in the α-diimine nickel(II) and palladium(II) catalyst systems, the unsymmetrical strategy is an effective and widely utilized method. In this contribution, unsymmetrical nickel and palladium α-diimine catalysts (Ipty/ⁱPr-Ni and Ipty/ⁱPr-Pd) derived from the dibenzobarrelene backbone were constructed via the combination of pentiptycenyl and diisopropylphenyl substituents, and investigated toward ethylene (co)polymerization. Both of these catalysts were capable of polymerizing ethylene in a broad temperature range of 0-120 °C, in which Ipty/ⁱPr-Ni could maintain activity in the level of 10⁶ g mol^-1 h^-1 even at 120 °C. The branching densities of polyethylenes generated by both nickel and palladium catalysts could be modulated by the reaction temperature. Compared with symmetrical Ipty-Ni and ⁱPr-Ni, Ipty/ⁱPr-Ni exhibited the highest activity, the highest polymer molecular weight, and the lowest branching density. In addition, Ipty/ⁱPr-Pd could produce copolymers of ethylene and methyl acrylate, with the polar monomer incorporating both on the main chain and the terminal of branches. Remarkably, the ratio of the in-chain and end-chain polar monomer incorporations could be modulated by varying the temperature.

Ethylene Polymerization through Neutral Nickel Complexes Bearing Cyclic Imides

The catalyst synthesis of salicylaldimine Ni(II) complexes with bulky imide moieties, ethylene polymerization, and characterization of synthesized polyethylenes are described in this paper. These Ni(II) complexes are designed to bear 2-aminobiphenyl and 4-tritylaniline. Results confirmed relatively high activity (up to $4\times {10}^4$  g PE mol Ni-1 h-1) of these catalysts in ethylene polymerization. Moreover, Ni(II) complexes demonstrated enhanced thermal stability, maintaining activity level up to 80°C. The generated polyethylenes possess moderate branching density and high melting temperatures. Less bulky 2-aminobiphenyl group resulted in higher branch content, while in Ni(II) complexes bearing 4-tritylaniline, more linear structure was observed. These semicrystalline polyethylenes showed mechanical properties similar to thermoplastics.

Recent Advances in the Copolymerization of Ethylene with Polar Comonomers by Nickel Catalysts

The less-expensive and earth-abundant nickel catalyst is highly promising in the copolymerization of ethylene with polar monomers and has thus attracted increasing attention in both industry and academia. Herein, we have summarized the recent advancements made in the state-of-the-art nickel catalysts with different types of ligands for ethylene copolymerization and how these modifications influence the catalyst performance, as well as new polymerization modulation strategies. With regard to α-diimine, salicylaldimine/ketoiminato, phosphino-phenolate, phosphine-sulfonate, bisphospnine monoxide, N-heterocyclic carbene and other unclassified chelates, the properties of each catalyst and fine modulation of key copolymerization parameters (activity, molecular weight, comonomer incorporation rate, etc.) are revealed in detail. Despite significant achievements, many opportunities and possibilities are yet to be fully addressed, and a brief outlook on the future development and long-standing challenges is provided.

Late Transition Metal Catalysts with Chelating Amines for Olefin Polymerization

Polyolefins are the most consumed polymeric materials extensively used in our daily life and are usually generated by coordination polymerization in the polyolefin industry. Olefin polymerization catalysts containing transition metal–organic compound combinations are undoubtedly crucial for the development of the polyolefin industry. The nitrogen donor atom has attracted considerable interest and is widely used in combination with the transition metal for the fine-tuning of the chemical environment around the metal center. In addition to widely reported olefin polymerization catalysts with imine and amide donors (sp2 hybrid N), late transition metal catalysts with chelating amine donors (sp3 hybrid N) for olefin polymerization have never been reviewed. In this review paper, we focus on late transition metal (Ni, Pd, Fe, and Co) catalysts with chelating amines for olefin polymerization. A variety of late transition metal catalysts bearing different neutral amine donors are surveyed for olefin polymerization, including amine–imine, amine–pyridine, α-diamine, and [N, N, N] tridentate ligands with amine donors. The relationship between catalyst structure and catalytic performance is also encompassed. This review aims to promote the design of late transition metal catalysts with unique chelating amine donors for the development of high-performance polyolefin materials.

A general strategy for heterogenizing olefin polymerization catalysts and the synthesis of polyolefins and composites

The heterogenization of homogeneous metal complexes on solid supports presents an efficient strategy for bridging homogeneous catalysts with industrially-preferred heterogeneous catalysts; however, a series of drawbacks restrict their implementation in olefin polymerization, particularly for copolymerization with polar comonomers. In this contribution, we report an ionic anchoring strategy that is highly versatile, generally applicable to different systems, and enables strong catalyst-support interactions while tolerating various polar functional groups. In addition to greatly enhanced polymerization properties, the supported catalysts achieved higher comonomer incorporation than their unsupported counterparts. This strategy enabled efficient polymerization at high temperatures at large scale and great control over product morphology, and the facile synthesis of polyolefin composites. More importantly, the dispersion of different fillers in the polyolefin matrix produced great material properties even at low composite loadings. It is expected that this strategy will find applications in different catalytic systems and the synthesis of advanced engineering materials.

cis-1,4 Selective Coordination Polymerization of 1,3-Butadiene and Copolymerization with Polar 2-(4-Methoxyphenyl)-1,3-butadiene by Acenaphthene-Based α-Diimine Cobalt Complexes Featuring Intra-Ligand π-π Stacking Interactions

Highly cis-1,4 selective (up to 98%) coordination-insertion polymerization of 1,3-butadiene (BD) has been achieved herein using acenaphthene-based α-diimine cobalt complexes. Due to the presence of intra-ligand π-π stacking interactions, the complexes revealed high thermostability, affording polybutadiene products in high yields. Moreover, all of the obtained polymers possessed a relatively narrow molecular weight distribution as well as high molecular weight (up to 92.2 × 104 Dalton). The molecular weights of the resultant polybutadienes could be finely tuned by varying polymerization parameters, including temperature, Al/Co ratio, etc. Moreover, the copolymerization of butadiene with polar monomer 2-(4-methoxyphenyl)-1,3-butadiene (2-MOPB) was also successfully realized to produce a type of polar cis-1,4 polybutadiene (cis-1,4 content: up to 98.1%) with a range of 2-MOPB content (0.46-1.83%). Water contact angle measurements indicated that the insertion of a polar monomer into a polymer chain could significantly improve the polymer's surface property.
