Isolation and characterization of a two-coordinate phosphinidene oxide

Nitroso compounds, R-N=O, are common intermediates in organic synthesis, and are typically amenable to storage and manipulation at ambient temperature under aerobic conditions. By contrast, phosphorus-containing analogues, such as R-P=O (R = OH, CH3, OCH3, Ph), are extremely reactive and need to be studied in inert gas matrices at ultralow temperatures (3-15 K). These species are believed to be key intermediates in the degradation/combustion of organic phosphorus compounds, a class of chemicals that includes chemical warfare agents and flame retardants. Here we describe the isolation of a two-coordinate phosphorus(III) oxide under ambient conditions, enabled by the use of an extremely bulky amine ligand. Reactivity studies reveal that the phosphorus centre can be readily oxidized, and that in doing so, the P-O bond remains intact, an observation that is of interest to the proposed reactivity of transient phosphorus(III) oxides.

Synthesis and Characterization of a Terminal Iron(II)-PH2 Complex and a Series of Iron(II)-PH3 Complexes

Reported is the reaction of a series of iron(II) bisphosphine complexes with PH3 in the presence of NaBArF4 [where BArF4 = tetrakis(3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)borate]. The iron(II) bisphosphine reagents bear two chlorides or a hydride and a chloride motif. We have isolated six different cationic terminal-bound PH3 complexes and undertaken rigorous characterization by NMR spectroscopy, single crystal X-ray diffraction, and mass spectrometry, where the PH3 often remains intact during the ionization process. Unusual bis- and tris-PH3 complexes are among the compounds isolated. Changing the monophosphine from PH3 to PMe3 results in the formation of an unusual Fe7 cluster, but with no PMe3 being ligated. Finally, by using an iron(0) source, we have provided a rare example of a terminally bound iron-PH2 complex.

Synthesis, Structure and Reactivity of a Cyapho(dicyano)methanide Salt

We describe the synthesis of a cyapho(dicyano)methanide salt, [K(18-crown-6)][C(CN)₂ (CP)], from reaction of [Na(18-crown-6)][PH₂ ] (18-crown-6=1,4,7,10,13,16-hexaoxacyclooctadecane) with 1,1-diethoxy-2,2-dicyanoethylene (EtO)₂ C=C(CN)₂ . The reaction proceeds through a Michael addition-elimination pathway to afford [Na(18-crown-6)][HP{C(OEt)=C(CN)₂ }]. Addition of a strong, non-nucleophilic base (KHMDS) to this intermediate results in the formation of [K(18-crown-6)][C(CN)₂ (CP)]. Subsequent reactivity studies reveal that the cyapho(dicyano)methanide ion is susceptible to protonation with strong acids to afford the parent acid HC(CN)₂ (CP). The reactivity of the cyaphide moiety in [C(CN)₂ (CP)]^- was explored through coordination to metal centers and in cycloaddition reactions with azides.

Main group cyanides: from hydrogen cyanide to cyanido-complexes

Homoleptic cyanide compounds exist of almost all main group elements. While the alkali metals and alkaline earth metals form cyanide salts, the cyanides of the lighter main group elements occur mainly as covalent compounds. This review gives an overview of the status quo of main group element cyanides and cyanido complexes. Information about syntheses are included as well as applications, special substance properties, bond lengths, spectroscopic characteristics and computations. Cyanide chemistry is presented mainly from the field of inorganic chemistry, but aspects of chemical biology and astrophysics are also discussed in relation to cyano compounds.

Taming PH3: State of the Art and Future Directions in Synthesis

Appetite for reactions involving PH₃ has grown in the past few years. This in part is due to the ability to generate PH₃ cleanly and safely via digestion of cheap metal phosphides with acids, thus avoiding pressurized cylinders and specialized equipment. In this perspective we highlight current trends in forming new P–C/P–OC bonds with PH₃ and discuss the challenges involved with selectivity and product separation encumbering these reactions. We highlight the reactivity of PH₃ with main group reagents, building on the early pioneering work with transition metal complexes and PH₃. Additionally, we highlight the recent renewal of interest in alkali metal sources of H₂P^– which are proving to be useful synthons for chemistry across the periodic table. Such MPH₂ sources are being used to generate the desired products in a more controlled fashion and are allowing access to unexplored phosphorus-containing species.
