A Metallofullertube of Ce2 @C100 with a Carbon Nanotube Segment: Synthesis, Single-Molecule Conductance and Supramolecular Assembly

Recent advances in supramolecular fullerene chemistry

Fullerene chemistry has come a long way since 1990, when the first bulk production of C60 was reported. In the past decade, progress in supramolecular chemistry has opened some remarkable and previously unexpected opportunities regarding the selective (multiple) functionalization of fullerenes and their (self)assembly into larger structures and frameworks. The purpose of this review article is to provide a comprehensive overview of these recent developments. We describe how macrocycles and cages that bind strongly to C60 can be used to block undesired addition patterns and thus allow the selective preparation of single-isomer addition products. We also discuss how the emergence of highly shape-persistent macrocycles has opened opportunities for the study of photoactive fullerene dyads and triads as well as the preparation of mechanically interlocked compounds. The preparation of two- or three-dimensional fullerene materials is another research area that has seen remarkable progress over the past few years. Due to the rapidly decreasing price of C60 and C70, we believe that these achievements will translate into all fields where fullerenes have traditionally (third-generation solar cells) and more recently been applied (catalysis, spintronics).

Metal Atoms (Li, Na, and K) Tuning the Configuration of Pyrrole for the Selective Recognition of C60

Host-guest structure assembly is significant in the recognition of molecules, and the fullerene-based host-guest structure is a convenient method to determine the structures of fullerenes of which recognition is with many difficulties in experiments. Here, with density functional theory calculations, we designed several crown-shaped pyrrole-based hosts tuned by doping metal atoms (Li, Na, and K) for the effective recognition of C₆₀ with modest interaction between the host and guest. Binding energy calculations showed an enhanced interaction of the concave-convex host-guest system with the doped metal atoms, enabling the selective recognition of C₆₀. The electrostatic interaction between the host and guest was studied by the natural bond order charge analysis, reduced density gradient, and electrostatic potential. Furthermore, the UV-vis-NIR spectra of host-guest structures were simulated to give guidance on the release of the fullerene guest. With much expectation, this work would give a new strategy to design new hosts for effectively recognizing much more fullerene molecules with modest interaction and would be useful for the assembly involving fullerenes.

Metallofullertube: From Tubular Endohedral Structures to Properties

Metallofullertubes are endohedral metallofullerenes with tubular fullerene cage possessing the segment of carbon nanotubes. Metallofullertubes have endohedral metal atom, fullerene cap and nanotube segment. Therefore, it is conceivable that this new kind of molecular materials would bring on many unexpected properties. In recent years, several pioneer metallofullertubes have been successfully reported, such as La₂ @D₅ (450)-C₁₀₀ , Ce₂ @D₅ (450)-C₁₀₀ , Sm₂ @D_3d (822)-C₁₀₄ . Apart from the great effort to synthesize molecules and determine their structures, the physical and chemical properties of metallofullertubes are still waiting to be explored. In this minireview, we revisit the structures of reported metallofullertubes, and then we highlight their electronic and supramolecular properties. Finally, some perspectives for the development of metallofullertubes are also discussed.
