Revisiting the Bonding Model for Gold(I) Species: The Importance of Pauli Repulsion Revealed in a Gold(I)-Cyclobutadiene Complex

Gold-catalyzed cyclization and cycloaddition in natural product synthesis

Covering: 2016 to mid 2023Transition metal catalysis, known for its remarkable capacity to expedite the assembly of molecular complexity from readily available starting materials in a single operation, occupies a central position in contemporary chemical synthesis. Within this landscape, gold-catalyzed reactions present a novel and versatile paradigm, offering robust frameworks for accessing diverse structural motifs. In this review, we highlighted a curated selection of publications in the past 8 years, focusing on the deployment of homogeneous gold catalysis in the ring-forming step for the total synthesis of natural products. These investigations are categorized based on the specific ring formations they engender, accentuating the prevailing gold-catalyzed methodologies applied to surmount intricate challenges in natural products synthesis.

The aromatic nature of auracycles and diauracycles based on calculated ring-current strengths

We have calculated the magnetically induced current density susceptibility for gold-containing organometallic molecular rings using the gauge-including magnetically induced currents (GIMIC) method. The aromatic nature has been determined by calculating the strength of the magnetically induced ring current susceptibility, which is often called ring current. To our knowledge, we show here for the first time that gold-containing organometallic rings may be aromatic or antiaromatic sustaining ring currents in the presence of an external magnetic field. The calculated aromatic character of the rings agrees with the aromatic nature one expects when using Hückel's aromaticity rules. The studied auracycles and diauracycles with 4n electrons in the conjugated orbitals generally sustain a weak paratropic ring current, whereas those having 4n + 2 electrons in the conjugated orbitals sustain a diatropic ring current that is almost as strong as that of benzene. The number of electrons are obtained by assuming that each C, N and Au atom of the ring contribute one electron, and a H atom connected to a N atom in the ring increases the number of electrons by one. An electron-attracting ligand at Au removes one electron from the ring. Formation of a short Au-Au bonding diauracycles reduces the number of electrons in the ring by two.

Syn-Aminoauration versus Anti-Aminoauration of Alkynes in Au(I)/Au(III) Catalysis: Understanding the Origin of Selectivity

There is no experimental evidence of whether such gold-catalyzed aminoauration reactions follow the anti- and/or syn-pathway, and hence, to understand the origin of the selectivity in Au(I)- and Au(III)-catalyzed reactions of alkynes, a thorough mechanistic study was performed using DFT methods. The NBO and ASM analyses provided significant information about the structure-stability-reactivity of the pathway-determining states (PDS). This study further reveals that the oxidation states and geometries of gold, the steric bulk, and the dihedral angles of the PDS direct the mechanistic pathways and control the turnover frequency.

Origin of the Bürgi-Dunitz Angle

The Bürgi-Dunitz (BD) angle plays a pivotal role in organic chemistry to rationalize the nucleophilic addition to carbonyl groups. Yet, the origin of the obtuse trajectory of the nucleophile remains incompletely understood. Herein, we quantify the importance of the underlying physical factors quantum chemically. The obtuse BD angle appears to originate from the concerted action of a reduced Pauli repulsion between the nucleophile HOMO and carbonyl π bond, a more stabilizing HOMO-π*-LUMO(C=O) interaction, as well as a more favorable electrostatic attraction.

Mechanistic Study of Alkyne Insertion into Cu-Al and Au-Al Bonds: A Paradigm Shift for Coinage Metal Chemistry

In this work, the mechanism of the insertion reaction of 3-hexyne into Cu-Al and Au-Al bonds in M-aluminyl (M = Cu, Au) complexes is computationally elucidated. The mechanism is found to be radical-like, with the Cu-Al and Au-Al bonds acting as nucleophiles toward the alkyne, and predicts a less efficient reactivity for the gold-aluminyl complex. The proposed mechanism well rationalizes the kinetic (or thermodynamic) control on the formation of the syn (or anti) insertion product into the Cu-Al bond (i.e., dimetallated alkene) which has been recently reported. A comparative analysis of the electronic structure reveals that the reduced reactivity at the gold site─usually showing higher efficiency than copper as a "standard" electrophile in alkyne activation─arises from a common feature, i.e., the highly stable 6s Au orbital. The relativistic lowering of the 6s orbital, making it more suitable for accepting electron density and thus enhancing the electrophilicity of gold complexes, in the gold-aluminyl system is responsible for a less nucleophilic Au-Al bond and, consequently, a less efficient alkyne insertion. These findings demonstrate that the unconventional electronic structure and the electron-sharing nature of the M-Al bond induce a paradigm shift in the properties of coinage metal complexes. In particular, the peculiar radical-like reactivity, previously shown also with carbon dioxide, suggests that these complexes might efficiently insert/activate other small molecules, opening new and unexplored paths for their reactivity.
