Interparticle Charge-Transport-Enhanced Electrochemiluminescence of Quantum-Dot Aerogels

Bright luminescent Zn2GeO4:Mn NP/MXene hydrogel-based ECL biosensor for glioblastoma diagnosis

In this work, miRNA-10b in the glioblastoma (GBM) tumor tissues has been detected by a novel electrochemiluminescence (ECL) biosensor. Firstly, a new kind of bright luminescent Zn2GeO4:Mn NPs were prepared as ECL nanoprobe, which possessed high fluorescence quantum yield and ECL quantum efficiency. Secondly, Ti3C2 MXene hydrogel (MXG) have been developed as the sensing interface. The MXG retained the inherent biocompatibility and mechanical features of hydrogel. Furthermore, the uniform distribution of metallic Ti3C2 MXene in the hydrogel microstructure provided the good conductivity and multiple binding sites for biomolecules. MXene also can promote the separation of the electrons and holes to accelerate the electron-transfer rate and improve ECL efficiency. Due to these synergistic effects, the screen printed electrode was successfully modified with MXG as sensing platform to enhance the ECL intensity of Zn2GeO4:Mn NP, which greatly improved the detection efficiency and facilitated the high-throughput analysis. Finally, the toehold mediated strand displacement (TMSD) strategy was employed with then biosensor to detect miRNA-10b with the range of 10 fM to 1 nM. The limit of detection was 5 fM. This ECL biosensor has been used to analyze miRNA-10b expression in GBM tumor tissues, which possessed the great potential value for clinical diagnosis.

Recent progress on charge transfer engineering in reticular framework for efficient electrochemiluminescence

Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) is a luminescence production technique triggered by electrochemistry, which has emerged as a powerful analytical technique in bioanalysis and clinical diagnosis. During ECL, charge transfer (CT) is an important process between electrochemical excitation and luminescent emission, and dramatically affects the efficiency of exciton generation, playing a pivotal role in the light-emitting properties of nanomaterials. Reticular framework materials with intramolecular/intermolecular interactions offer a promising platform for regulating CT pathways and enhancing luminescence efficiency. Deciphering the role of intramolecular/intermolecular CT processes in reticular framework materials allows for the targeted design and synthesis of emitters with precisely controlled CT properties. This sheds light on the microscopic mechanisms of electro-optical conversion in ECL, propelling advancements in their efficiency and breakthrough applications. This mini-review focuses on recent advancements in engineering CT within reticular frameworks to boost ECL efficiency. We summarized strategies including intra-reticular charge transfer, CT between the metal and ligands, and CT between guest molecules and frameworks within reticular frameworks, which holds promise for developing next-generation ECL devices with enhanced sensitivity and light emission.

Low-Triggering-Potential and Narrow-Potential-Window Electrochemiluminescence of Silver Nanoclusters for Gene Assay

A low-triggering potential and a narrow-potential window are anticipated to decrease the electrochemical interference and cross talk of electrochemiluminescence (ECL). Herein, by exploiting the low oxidative potential (0.82 V vs Ag/AgCl) of dihydrolipoic acid-capped sliver nanoclusters (DHLA-AgNCs), a coreactant ECL system of DHLA-AgNCs/hydrazine (N2H4) is proposed to achieve efficient and oxidative-reduction ECL with a low-triggering potential of 0.82 V (vs Ag/AgCl) and a narrow-potential window of 0.22 V. The low-triggering-potential and narrow-potential-window nature of ECL can be primarily preserved upon labeling DHLA-AgNCs to probe DNA and immobilizing DHLA-AgNCs onto the Au surface via sandwiched hybridization, which eventually enables a selective ECL strategy for the gene assay at +0.82 V. This gene assay strategy can sensitively determine the gene of human papillomavirus from 10 to 1000 pM with a low limit of detection of 5 pM (S/N = 3) and would open a way to improve the applied ECL bioassay.

Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Cocrystal-Encapsulated Perovskite Nanocrystals as Coreactant-Free Electrochemiluminescent Luminophore for the Detection of Uranium

Lead halide perovskite nanocrystals with excellent photophysical properties are promising electrochemiluminescence (ECL) candidates, but their poor stability greatly restricts ECL applications. Herein, hydrogen-bonded cocrystal-encapsulated CsPbBr3 perovskite nanocrystals (PeNCs@NHS-M) were synthesized by using PeNCs as nuclei for inducing the crystallization of melamine (M) and N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS). The as-synthesized composite exhibits multiplicative ECL efficiencies (up to 24-fold that of PeNCs) without exogenous coreactants and with excellent stability in the aqueous phase. The enhanced stability can be attributed to the well-designed heterostructure of the PeNCs@NHS-M composite, which benefits from both moiety passivation and protection of the peripheral cocrystal matrix. Moreover, the heterostructure with covalent linkage facilitates charge transfer between PeNCs and NHS-M cocrystals, realizing effective ECL emission. Meanwhile, the NHS and M components act as coreactants for PeNCs, shortening the electron-transport distance and resulting in a significant increase in the ECL signal. Furthermore, by taking advantage of the specific binding effect between NHS-M and uranyl (UO22+), an ECL system with both a low detection limit (1 nM) and high selectivity for monitoring UO22+ in mining wastewater is established. The presence of UO22+ disrupted the charge-transfer effect within PeNCs@NHS-M, weakening the ECL signals. This work provides an efficient design strategy for obtaining stable and efficient ECLs from perovskite nanocrystals, offering a new perspective for the discovery and application of perovskite-based ECL systems.

Energy Level Engineering in Gold Nanoclusters for Exceptionally Bright NIR Electrochemiluminescence at a Low Trigger Potential

Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) is a widely used light output mechanism from electrochemical excitation. Understanding the intrinsic essence for ideal ECL generation remains a fundamental challenge. Here, based on the molecular orbital theory, we reported an energy level engineering strategy to regulate the ECL performance by using ligand-protected gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) as luminophores and N,N-diisopropylethylamine (DIPEA) as a coreactant. The energy level matching between the AuNCs and DIPEA effectively promoted their electron transfer reactions, thus improving the excitation efficiency and reducing the trigger potential. Simultaneously, the narrow band gap of the AuNCs further enabled enhanced emission efficiency. Using the energy level engineering theory developed here, a dual-enhanced strategy was proposed, and β-CD-AuNCs were designed to further verify this mechanism. The β-CD-AuNCs/DIPEA system resulted in highly stable near-infrared ECL with an unprecedented ECL efficiency (145-fold higher than that of the classic Ru(bpy)32+/tetra-n-butylammonium perchlorate system) and a low trigger potential of 0.48 V. A visual NIR-ECL based on this ECL system was successfully realized by an infrared camera. This work provides an original mechanistic understanding for designing efficient ECL systems, which promises to be a harbinger for broad applicability of this strategy for other ECL systems and ECL sensing platforms.
