Bio-Inspired Bimetallic Cooperativity Through a Hydrogen Bonding Spacer in CO2 Reduction

Design of Cr-Based Molecular Electrocatalyst Systems for the CO2 Reduction Reaction

ConspectusHuman influence on the climate system was recently summarized by the sixth Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Assessment Report, which noted that global surface temperatures have increased more rapidly in the last 50 years than in any other 50-year period in the last 2000 years. Elevated global surface temperatures have had detrimental impacts, including more frequent and intense extreme weather patterns like flooding, wildfires, and droughts. In order to limit greenhouse gas emissions, various climate change policies, like emissions trading schemes and carbon taxes, have been implemented in many countries. The most prevalent anthropogenic greenhouse gas emitted is carbon dioxide (CO2), which accounted for 80% of all U.S. greenhouse gas emissions in 2022. The reduction of CO2 through the use of homogeneous electrocatalysts generally follows a two-electron/two-proton pathway to produce either carbon monoxide (CO) with water (H2O) as a coproduct or formic acid (HCOOH). These reduced carbon species are relevant to industrial applications: the Fischer-Tropsch process uses CO and H2 to produce fuels and commodity chemicals, while HCOOH is an energy dense carrier for fuel cells and useful synthetic reagent. Electrochemically reducing CO2 to value-added products is a potential way to address its steadily increasing atmospheric concentrations while supplanting the use of nonrenewable petrochemical reserves through the generation of new carbon-based resources. The selective electrochemical reduction of CO2 (CO2RR) by homogeneous catalyst systems was initially achieved with late (and sometimes costly) transition metal active sites, leading the field to conclude that transition metal complexes based on metals earlier in the periodic table, like chromium (Cr), were nonprivileged for the CO2RR. However, metals early in the table have sufficient reducing power to mediate the CO2RR and therefore could be selective in the correct coordination environment. This Account describes our efforts to develop and optimize novel Cr-based CO2RR catalyst systems through redox-active ligand modification strategies and the use of redox mediators (RMs). RMs are redox-active molecules which can participate cocatalytically during an electrochemical reaction, transferring electrons─often accompanied by protons─to a catalytic active site. Through mechanistic and computational work, we have found that ligand-based redox activity is key to controlling the intrinsic selectivity of these Cr compounds for CO2 activation. Ligand-based redox activity is also essential for developing cocatalytic systems, since it enables through-space interactions with reduced RMs containing redox-active planar aromatic groups, allowing charge transfer to occur within the catalyst assembly. Following a summary of our work, we offer a perspective on the possibilities for future development of catalytic and cocatalytic systems with early transition metals for small molecule activation.

CO2 cleavage by tantalum/M (M = iridium, osmium) heterobimetallic complexes

A novel Ta/Os heterobimetallic complex, [Ta(CH2tBu)3(μ-H)3OsCp*], 2, is prepared by protonolysis of Ta(CHtBu)(CH2tBu)3 with Cp*OsH5. Treatment of 2 and its iridium analogue [Ta(CH2tBu)3(μ-H)2IrCp*], 1, with CO2 under mild conditions reveal the efficient cleavage of CO2, driven by the formation of a tantalum oxo species in conjunction with CO transfer to the osmium or iridium fragments, to form Cp*Ir(CO)H2 and Cp*Os(CO)H3, respectively. This bimetallic reactivity diverges from more classical CO2 insertion into metal-X (X = metal, hydride, alkyl) bonds.

Methane Formation Induced via Face-to-Face Orientation of Cyclic Fe Porphyrin Dimer in Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction

Iron porphyrins are known to provide CH4 as an eight-electron reduction product of CO2 in a photochemical reaction. However, there are still some aspects of the reaction mechanism that remain unclear. In this study, we synthesized iron porphyrin dimers and carried out the photochemical CO2 reduction reactions in N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMA) containing a photosensitizer in the presence of 1,3-dimethyl-2-phenyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-benzo[d]imidazole (BIH) as an electron donor. We found that, despite a low catalytic turnover number, CH4 was produced only when these porphyrins were facing each other. The close proximity of the cyclic dimers, distinguishing them from a linear Fe porphyrin dimer and monomers, induced multi-electron CO2 reduction, emphasizing the unique role of their structural arrangement in CH4 formation.

Bio-inspired bimetallic models for electrochemical CO2 reduction

Inspired by the carbon monoxide dehydrogenase (CODH) active site where two metal ions synergistically catalyze the interconversion between CO2 and CO, we have developed a family of rhenium dipyridine derivatives (1-3), in which potassium 1-aza-18-crown-6-ether (KN18C6) moiety functions as a Lewis acid to assist the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). We found that such design leads to dramatically strong deposition on the electrode under CO2 in the presence of potassium cation, and a clear trend for the deposition rate was observed following the flexibility of linkage between the framework and the KN18C6 moiety; the more flexible, the faster. The origin of deposition was further characterized by a series of control experiments and infrared spectroelectrochemistry (IR-SEC). Unfortunately, the deposition suppresses the subsequent C-O bond cleavage reaction.

Opportunities and challenges for plastic depolymerization by biomimetic catalysis

Plastic waste has imposed significant burdens on the environment. Chemical recycling allows for repeated regeneration of plastics without deterioration in quality, but often requires harsh reaction conditions, thus being environmentally unfriendly. Enzymatic catalysis offers a promising solution for recycling under mild conditions, but it faces inherent limitations such as poor stability, high cost, and narrow substrate applicability. Biomimetic catalysis may provide a new avenue by combining high enzyme-like activity with the stability of inorganic materials. Biomimetic catalysis has demonstrated great potential in biomass conversion and has recently shown promising progress in plastic degradation. This perspective discusses biomimetic catalysis for plastic degradation from two perspectives: the imitation of the active centers and the imitation of the substrate-binding clefts. Given the chemical similarity between biomass and plastics, relevant work is also included in the discussion to draw inspiration. We conclude this perspective by highlighting the challenges and opportunities in achieving sustainable plastic recycling via a biomimetic approach.

Kinetic isotope effect offers selectivity in CO2 reduction

A binuclear Ni complex with N,O donors catalyzes CO2 reduction via its Ni(I) state. The product distribution when H2O is used as a proton source shows similar yields for CO, HCOOH and H2. However, when D2O is used, the product distribution shows a ∼65% selectivity for HCOOH. In situ FTIR indicates that the reaction involves a Ni-COO* and a Ni-CO intermediate. Differences in H/D KIEs on different protonation pathways determine the selectivity of CO2 reduction.

Ligand-Bound CO2 as a Nonclassical Route toward Efficient Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction with a Ni N-Confused Porphyrin

Implementing the synergistic effects between the metal and the ligand has successfully streamlined the energetics for CO2 activation and gained high catalytic activities, establishing the important breakthroughs in photocatalytic CO2 reduction. Herein, we describe a Ni(II) N-confused porphyrin complex (NiNCP) featuring an acidic N-H group. It is readily deprotonated and exists in an anion form during catalysis. Owing to this functional site, NiNCP gave rise to an outstanding turnover number (TON) as high as 217,000 with a 98% selectivity for CO2 reduction to CO, while the parent Ni(II) porphyrin (NiTPP) was found to be nearly inactive. Our mechanistic analysis revealed a nonclassical reaction pattern where CO2 was effectively activated via the attack of the Lewis-basic ligand. The resulting ligand-bound CO2 adduct could be further reduced to produce CO. This new metal-ligand synergistic effect is anticipated to inspire the design of highly active catalysts for small molecule activations.

Bioinspired Binickel Catalyst for Carbon Dioxide Reduction: The Importance of Metal-ligand Cooperation

Catalyst design for the efficient CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) remains a crucial challenge for the conversion of CO2 to fuels. Natural Ni-Fe carbon monoxide dehydrogenase (NiFe-CODH) achieves reversible conversion of CO2 and CO at nearly thermodynamic equilibrium potential, which provides a template for developing CO2RR catalysts. However, compared with the natural enzyme, most biomimetic synthetic Ni-Fe complexes exhibit negligible CO2RR catalytic activities, which emphasizes the significance of effective bimetallic cooperation for CO2 activation. Enlightened by bimetallic synergy, we herein report a dinickel complex, NiIINiII(bphpp)(AcO)2 (where NiNi(bphpp) is derived from H2bphpp = 2,9-bis(5-tert-butyl-2-hydroxy-3-pyridylphenyl)-1,10-phenanthroline) for electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 to CO, which exhibits a remarkable reactivity approximately 5 times higher than that of the mononuclear Ni catalyst. Electrochemical and computational studies have revealed that the redox-active phenanthroline moiety effectively modulates the electron injection and transfer akin to the [Fe3S4] cluster in NiFe-CODH, and the secondary Ni site facilitates the C-O bond activation and cleavage through electron mediation and Lewis acid characteristics. Our work underscores the significant role of bimetallic cooperation in CO2 reduction catalysis and provides valuable guidance for the rational design of CO2RR catalysts.

Understanding the Interplay of the Brønsted Acidity of Catalyst Ancillary Groups and the Solution Components in Iron-porphyrin-Mediated Carbon Dioxide Reduction

The rapid and efficient conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) to carbon monoxide (CO) is an ongoing challenge. Catalysts based on iron-porphyrin cores have emerged as excellent electrochemical mediators of the two proton + two electron reduction of CO2 to CO, and many of the design features that promote function are known. Of those design features, the incorporation of Brønsted acids in the second coordination sphere of the iron ion has a significant impact on catalyst turnover kinetics. The Brønsted acids are often in the form of hydroxyphenyl groups. Herein, we explore how the acidity of an ancillary 2-hydroxyphenyl group affects the performance of CO2 reduction electrocatalysts. A series of meso-5,10,15,20-tetraaryl porphyrins were prepared where only the functional group at the 5-meso position has an ionizable proton. A series of cyclic voltammetry (CV) experiments reveal that the complex with -OMe positioned para to the ionizable -OH shows the largest CO2 reduction rate constants in acetonitrile solvent. This is the least acidic -OH of the compounds surveyed. The turnover frequency of the -OMe derivative can be further improved with the addition of 4-trifluoromethylphenol to the solution. In contrast, the iron-porphyrin complex with -CF3 positioned opposite the ionizable -OH shows the smallest CO2 reduction rate constants, and its turnover frequency is less enhanced with the addition of phenols to the reaction solutions. The origin of this effect is rationalized based on kinetic isotope effect experiments and density functional calculations. We conclude that catalysts with weaker internal acids coupled with stronger external acid additives provide superior CO2 reduction kinetics.

Second Coordination Sphere Effect Shifts CO2 to CO Reduction by Iron Porphyrin from Fe0 to FeI

Iron porphyrins are among the most studied molecular catalysts for carbon dioxide (CO2 ) reduction and their reactivity is constantly being enhanced through the implementation of chemical functionalities in the second coordination sphere inspired by the active sites of enzymes. In this study, we were intrigued to observe that a multipoint hydrogen bonding scheme provided by embarked urea groups could also shift the redox activation step of CO2 from the well-admitted Fe(0) to the Fe(I) state. Using EPR, resonance Raman, IR and UV-Visible spectroscopies, we underpinned a two-electron activation step of CO2 starting from the Fe(I) oxidation state to form, after protonation, an Fe(III)-COOH species. The addition of another electron and a proton to the latter species converged to the cleavage of a C-O bond with the loss of water molecule resulting in an Fe(II)-CO species. DFT analyses of these postulated intermediates are in good agreement with our collected spectroscopic data, allowing us to propose an alternative pathway in the catalytic CO2 reduction with iron porphyrin catalyst. Such a remarkable shift opens new lines of research in the design of molecular catalysts to reach low overpotentials in performing multi-electronic CO2 reduction catalysis.

Redox-Active Ligand Assisted Multielectron Catalysis: A Case of Electrocatalyzed CO2-to-CO Conversion

The selective reduction of carbon dioxide remains a significant challenge due to the complex multielectron/proton transfer process, which results in a high kinetic barrier and the production of diverse products. Inspired by the electrostatic and H-bonding interactions observed in the second sphere of the [NiFe]-CODH enzyme, researchers have extensively explored these interactions to regulate proton transfer, stabilize intermediates, and ultimately improve the performance of catalytic CO2 reduction. In this work, a series of cobalt(II) tetraphenylporphyrins with varying numbers of redox-active nitro groups were synthesized and evaluated as CO2 reduction electrocatalysts. Analyses of the redox properties of these complexes revealed a consistent relationship between the number of nitro groups and the corresponding accepted electron number of the ligand at -1.59 V vs. Fc+/0. Among the catalysts tested, TNPPCo with four nitro groups exhibited the most efficient catalytic activity with a turnover frequency of 4.9 × 104 s-1 and a catalytic onset potential 820 mV more positive than that of the parent TPPCo. Furthermore, the turnover frequencies of the catalysts increased with a higher number of nitro groups. These results demonstrate the promising design strategy of incorporating multielectron redox-active ligands into CO2 reduction catalysts to enhance catalytic performance.

Further Understanding the Roles of Solvent, Brønsted Acids, and Hydrogen Bonding in Iron Porphyrin-Mediated Carbon Dioxide Reduction

Improving our understanding of how molecules and materials mediate the electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) to upgraded products is of great interest as a means to address climate change. A leading class of molecules that can facilitate the electrochemical conversion of CO2 to carbon monoxide (CO) is iron porphyrins. These molecules can have high rate constants for CO2-to-CO conversion; they are robust, and they rely on abundant and inexpensive synthetic building blocks. Important foundational work has been conducted using chloroiron 5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrin (FeTPPCl) in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) solvent. A related and recent report points out that the corresponding perchlorate complex, FeTPPClO4, can have superior function due to its solubility in other organic solvents. However, the importance of hydrogen bonding and solvent effects was not discussed. Herein, we present a detailed kinetic study of the triflate (CF3SO3-) complex of FeTPP in DMF and in MeCN using a range of phenol Brønsted acid additives. We also detected the formation of Fe(III)TPP-phenolate complexes using cyclic voltammetry experiments. Importantly, our new analysis of apparent rate constants with different added phenols allows for a modification to the established mechanistic model for CO2-to-CO conversion. Critically, our improved model accounts for hydrogen bonding and solvent effects by using simple hydrogen bond acidity and basicity descriptors. We use this augmented model to rationalize function in other reported porphyrin systems and to make predictions about operational conditions that can enhance the CO2 reduction chemistry.

Coordination Tuning of Metal Porphyrins for Improved Oxygen Evolution Reaction

The nucleophilic attack of water or hydroxide on metal-oxo units forms an O-O bond in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Coordination tuning to improve this attack is intriguing but has been rarely realized. We herein report on improved OER catalysis by metal porphyrin 1-M (M=Co, Fe) with a coordinatively unsaturated metal ion. We designed and synthesized 1-M by sterically blocking one porphyrin side with a tethered tetraazacyclododecane unit. With this protection, the metal-oxo species generated in OER can maintain an unoccupied trans axial site. Importantly, 1-M displays a higher OER activity in alkaline solutions than analogues lacking such an axial protection by decreasing up to 150-mV overpotential to achieve 10 mA/cm2 current density. Theoretical studies suggest that with an unoccupied trans axial site, the metal-oxo unit becomes more positively charged and thus is more favoured for the hydroxide nucleophilic attack as compared to metal-oxo units bearing trans axial ligands.

Bimetallic Molecular Catalyst Design for Carbon Dioxide Reduction

The core challenge in developing cost-efficient catalysts for carbon dioxide (CO2 ) conversion mainly lies in controlling its complex reaction pathways. One such strategy exploits bimetallic cooperativity, which relies on the synergistic interaction between two metal centers to activate and convert the CO2 substrate. While this approach has seen an important trend in heterogeneous catalysis as a handle to control stabilities of surface intermediates, it has not often been utilized in molecular and heterogenized molecular catalytic systems. In this review, we gather general principles on how natural CO2 activating enzymes take advantage of bimetallic strategy and how phosphines, cyclams, polypyridyls, porphyrins, and cryptates-based homo- and hetero-bimetallic molecular catalysts can help understand the synergistic effect of two metal centers.

Bimetallic Sites for Catalysis: From Binuclear Metal Sites to Bimetallic Nanoclusters and Nanoparticles

Heterogeneous bimetallic catalysts have broad applications in industrial processes, but achieving a fundamental understanding on the nature of the active sites in bimetallic catalysts at the atomic and molecular level is very challenging due to the structural complexity of the bimetallic catalysts. Comparing the structural features and the catalytic performances of different bimetallic entities will favor the formation of a unified understanding of the structure-reactivity relationships in heterogeneous bimetallic catalysts and thereby facilitate the upgrading of the current bimetallic catalysts. In this review, we will discuss the geometric and electronic structures of three representative types of bimetallic catalysts (bimetallic binuclear sites, bimetallic nanoclusters, and nanoparticles) and then summarize the synthesis methodologies and characterization techniques for different bimetallic entities, with emphasis on the recent progress made in the past decade. The catalytic applications of supported bimetallic binuclear sites, bimetallic nanoclusters, and nanoparticles for a series of important reactions are discussed. Finally, we will discuss the future research directions of catalysis based on supported bimetallic catalysts and, more generally, the prospective developments of heterogeneous catalysis in both fundamental research and practical applications.

Metal Porphyrin Complex Combined with Polymerization and Isomerization Cyclic Amplification for a Sensitive Photoelectrochemical Assay

5,10,15,20-Tetrakis(4-aminophenyl)-21H,23H-porphine (TPAPP) possesses good light-harvesting ability and photoelectrochemical (PEC) cathode response signal; however, the disadvantages of easy stacking and weak hydrophilicity limit its application as a signal probe in PEC biosensors. Based on these, we prepared a Fe³⁺ and Cu²⁺ co-coordinating photoactive material (TPAPP-Fe/Cu) with horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-like activity. The metal ions in the porphyrin center not only enabled the directional flow of photogenerated electrons between electron-rich porphyrin and positive metal ions within inner-/intermolecular layers but also accelerated electron transfer through a synergistic redox reaction of Fe(III)/Fe(II) and Cu(II)/Cu(I) as well as rapid generation of superoxide anion radicals (O₂^-•) by mimicking catalytically produced and dissolved oxygen, thereby providing the desired cathode photoactive material with extremely high photoelectric conversion efficiency. Accordingly, by combining with toehold-mediated strand displacement (TSD)-induced single cycle and polymerization and isomerization cyclic amplification (PICA), an ultrasensitive PEC biosensor was constructed for the detection of colon cancer-related miRNA-182-5p. The ultratrace target could be converted to abundant output DNA by TSD possessing the desirable amplifying ability to trigger PICA for forming long ssDNA with repetitive sequences, thus decorating substantial TPAPP-Fe/Cu-labeled DNA signal probes for producing high PEC photocurrent. Meanwhile, the Mn(III) meso-tetraphenylporphine chloride (MnPP) was embedded in dsDNA to further exhibit a sensitization effect toward TPAPP-Fe/Cu and an acceleration effect analogous to that of metal ions in the porphyrin center above. As a result, the proposed biosensor displayed a detection limit as low as 0.2 fM, facilitating the development of high-performance biosensors and showing great potential in early clinical diagnosis.
