Combining Deep Eutectic Solvents with TEMPO-based Polymer Electrodes: Influence of Molar Ratio on Electrode Performance

Conjugated Nitroxide Radical Polymer with Low Temperature Tolerance Potential for High-Performance Organic Polymer Cathode

Low-temperature operation poses a significant challenge for current commercial rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Organic polymer electrode materials, exhibiting a nonintercalation redox mechanism, offer a viable solution to mitigate the decline in electrochemical performance at low temperatures in LIBs. Herein, a radical polymer P(DATPAPO-TPA) with a conjugated nitrogen-rich triphenylamine derivative as the backbone and high-density nitroxide pendants has been synthesized. Due to the large interstitial spaces between adjacent structural units and polymer chains, resulting from the significant torsion angle between the benzene rings in the P(DATPAPO-TPA) skeleton, ions could effectively transport. This structural feature demonstrated a notable discharge capacity of 143.3 mA h·g-1 and a high charge-discharge plateau at ∼3.75 V vs Li+/Li, outperforming most reported radical polymer cathode materials. In addition, its capacity retention could reach 83.1% after 2000 cycles at an ultrahigh current density of 50 C, showing excellent rate capability and promising cyclability. Also notable was P(DATPAPO-TPA)'s favorable low-temperature performance that maintains a high discharge capacity of 139.2 mA h·g-1 at 0 °C. The synthesized P(DATPAPO-TPA) is a tangible illustration of a viable design strategy for low-temperature electrode materials, thereby contributing to broadening applications for radical polymer electrode materials.

A solid-state lithium-ion battery with micron-sized silicon anode operating free from external pressure

Applying high stack pressure (often up to tens of megapascals) to solid-state Li-ion batteries is primarily done to address the issues of internal voids formation and subsequent Li-ion transport blockage within the solid electrode due to volume changes. Whereas, redundant pressurizing devices lower the energy density of batteries and raise the cost. Herein, a mechanical optimization strategy involving elastic electrolyte is proposed for SSBs operating without external pressurizing, but relying solely on the built-in pressure of cells. We combine soft-rigid dual monomer copolymer with deep eutectic mixture to design an elastic solid electrolyte, which exhibits not only high stretchability and deformation recovery capability but also high room-temperature Li-ion conductivity of 2×10-3 S cm-1 and nonflammability. The micron-sized Si anode without additional stack pressure, paired with the elastic electrolyte, exhibits exceptional stability for 300 cycles with 90.8% capacity retention. Furthermore, the solid Li/elastic electrolyte/LiFePO4 battery delivers 143.3 mAh g-1 after 400 cycles. Finally, the micron-sized Si/elastic electrolyte/LiFePO4 full cell operates stably for 100 cycles in the absence of any additional pressure, maintaining a capacity retention rate of 98.3%. This significantly advances the practical applications of solid-state batteries.

All-Organic Battery Based on Deep Eutectic Solvent and Redox-Active Polymers

Sustainable battery concepts are of great importance for the energy storage demands of the future. Organic batteries based on redox-active polymers are one class of promising storage systems to meet these demands, in particular when combined with environmentally friendly and safe electrolytes. Deep Eutectic Solvents (DESs) represent a class of electrolytes that can be produced from sustainable sources and exhibit in most cases no or only a small environmental impact. Because of their non-flammability, DESs are safe, while providing an electrochemical stability window almost comparable to established battery electrolytes and much broader than typical aqueous electrolytes. Here, we report the first all-organic battery cell based on a DES electrolyte, which in this case is composed of sodium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (NaTFSI) and N-methylacetamide (NMA) alongside the electrode active materials poly(2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-1-yl-oxyl methacrylate) (PTMA) and crosslinked poly(vinylbenzylviologen) (X-PVBV2+ ). The resulting cell shows two voltage plateaus at 1.07 V and 1.58 V and achieves Coulombic efficiencies of 98 %. Surprisingly, the X-PVBV/X-PVBV+ redox couple turned out to be much more stable in NaTFSI : NMA 1 : 6 than the X-PVBV+ /X-PVBV2+ couple, leading to asymmetric capacity fading during cycling tests.
